Great recording, great price. Buy this without question!!!!!.......2007-07-08

I stumbled across this little gem for the low price of about $3.00. I almost kept going assuming that the price was an indication of the quality. Glad I looked twice.

This is a wonderful album with respectful treatments and excellent sound quality, performed by the some of the greatest musicians in the world from the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonica Orchestra.

The Enigma Variations, a Theme and 15 short orchestrations that Sir Edward then named after his friends and family based on personality traits, are a wonderful, uncelebrated Opus. I love these pieces. They truly showcase the power of Elgar's compositional style and flair. They certainly rival his more famous Pomp and Circumstance, in my humble opinion. The recording is sharp, well mixed, with no perceivable noise.

As for the Pomp and Circumstance recordings, well done throughout. All 5 pieces are played wonderfully and recorded beautifully with excellent sound mixing and very little, if any, background noise.

Cockaigne Overture is, once again, perfect. Marvelous treatment, wonderful musicianship, excellent sound and quality.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE GREATEST MUSICAL VALUE ON THE SHELVES RIGHT NOW. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I ONLY PAID $3.00 FOR THIS RECORDING. I WOULD HAVE GLADLY SHELLED OUT THE OBLIGATORY $15.00 - $20.00 CONSIDERING THE QUALITY OF THIS CD.

Noble Elgar, unbelievable price.......2007-05-05

This is not some schlock budget disc, which the price might suggest. Boult was one of the great Elgar interpretors (Barbirolli too) and these performances, especially the inspired Enigma Variations, bring out the very soul of Elgar. Sound quality, by the way, is excellent--warm and rich analog glow.

Great for High School Graduations!.......2007-03-12

I am the Principal of a small private boarding school that opened just last year. We do not have a school orchestra, so when the time came for us to plan our graduation ceremony, I searched all over the web for the traditional music. I heard some awful, piano versions of Pomp and Circumstance #4, and some other lackluster symphonic versions. Seraphim's CD of Elgar's works is by far the best. It is warm, heartfelt, inspiring, rich and incredibly well produced. Perhaps having the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra was the best choice, as they are playing the works of a fellow countryman. Several people came up to me after the ceremony to comment on the music, saying they were extremely moved by the music. Not bad for just playing it over a boombox!

By the way, if you are planning on using this for a graduation, know that you will have to edit out the long introductory passage and figure out how to loop the most famous "graduation" section over enough times to get through your ceremony!

Elgar's Greatest Hits at a Rock Bottom Price!.......2006-09-28

You just can't go wrong with this compilation of Elgar works and this super-cheap price. The performances are full-priced quality. This is a great introduction to Elgar CD. The Enigma Variations will bring tears to your eyes!

Leonard Slatkin has recorded 100 performances, Pinchas Zukerman, 100 performances, and Janos Starker, 150 performances. Doesn't RCA/BMG need them anymore?
I had heard Symphony 2 on record, but there is an Enigma and vagueness about these symphonies. They take forever and never get to the point.
Enigma Variations were pleasant enough, enough to make me sleep. I recognized Elgar in the last variation. Elgar fits more of what I am with an optimism and bombast in the orchestral works. Zukerman's rendition of Elgar's Violin Concerto is off-key ala Paganini.
I don't know whether Starker's or Du Pre's Cello Concerto playing is the most satisfying. But I definitely like it.
I suppose these recording stem from the Seventies. I heard Zukerman on CBC Radio 2 talking so I know he is available.

Simply The Best........2004-11-01

I bought this collection for the Introduction & Allegro cut alone. William Boughton's performance takes what is already a jewel and polishes it to an incredible brilliance and beauty. I own many of the Introduction & Allegro versions done by others, and none of them can hold a candle to this performance. Boughton ruins it for anyone else! This one cut is worth the price for the whole collection, plus you get 4 discs of other Elgar treasures as a bonus! and there isnt a runt in the litter.

An Essential Recording!.......2006-10-25

Arguably the finest recording of Enigma Variations ever made. Listen and see if you can stay dry eyed during the Nimrod variation. In addition the recording has the benefits of great Telarc engineering.

When the recording was made, man for man the Baltimore Symphony could not match the talent of the world's great orchestras. Yet the finished recording perhaps exceeds the product of any orchestra that has ever recorded this music. How can this be? Playing orchestral music is a team effect. In this recording you hear absolute unanimity of purpose in making great music. Couple this with Zinman's interpretation and absolute precision in the orchestra's playing and the result is an essential recoding.

This recording has definitely grown on me. I own three recordings of Elgar's famous work. This was the first I purchased, and I later bought Gardiner/Vienna Philharmonic and Solti/Vienna Philharmonic. The last two soon eclipsed this recording, but it came back into favor when I began to realize its merits.
In my Gardiner/VP veview, I pointed out that Gardiner brings a distinctly German feel to Elgar, and the interpretation seemed justified. The program here is almost identical to Gardiner's in the type of selections. Zinman has 'Cockaigne', a concert overture, the short piece 'Love's Greeting', and the 'Serenade for Strings', while Gardiner has 'In the South' concert overture, 'Sospiri', a short adagio for strings and organ, and the 'Introduction and Allegro', also for strings. And of course both have Enigma. What I noticed when comparing these two albums was that Zinman's interpretation was as English sounding as Gardiner's was German, but the performance style was equally as justified. Each chose the perfect program to represent his own style, and the only overlap of interpretation happens in Enigma. In my opinion, the style could lean either way. Zinman conducts the Variations smoothly and rather as a whole (incidentally, there is only one 30-minute track here and not the usual 15 tracks. He emphasizes balance between the groups of instruments and is particularly keen on dynamic relationships. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is very stately, even in the very loud parts, and never overblown. They are still able to create large volumes of sound, but always in a controlled manner.
Each recording has its slight problems (I gave all three CDs 4 stars each). The problems with this recording are subjective. The Serenade for Strings was a bit too lackluster for my taste. Zinman interprets it very pastorally, and it loses a lot of potential excitement. The first two movements are slower than the metronome markings, and if the pace were quickened I think it would help a lot. The middle movement would flow more (perhaps 4'30 instead of Zinman's 6'). The first movement is marked Allegro piacevole. Piacevole means playfully, and I really didn't see that in Zinman's version. As far as the Enigma Variations are concerned, Zinman takes about half the marked tempos, and the other half of the time he takes traditionalIy slower tempos. In my opinion, more movement here could only benefit the performance. I had my friends compare recordings of 'Nimrod', and they all came to the conclusion that Zinman's Nimrod was too dull and uninspiring. If you disagree with all of this tempo stuff, then enjoying the disc shouldn't be even the slightest problem, of course, as everything else is fine.

Zinman's Great Interpretations of Elgar's Music.......2001-05-07

I recently stumbled upon this recording after hearing others with David Zinman conducting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich. Without a doubt, this early recording of his with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra shows why he is one of our most distinguished, if underrated, conductors. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra plays these Elgar works with ample passion and precision, at a level of excellence that one expects from the American "Big Five" orchestras (Those in Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia.). Zinman is a compassionate interpreter of Elgar's music, but also a fine technician who does a great job probing the vast dynamic range of these scores. So I can understand why British music critics have greatly admired these interpretations of Elgar's music. Telarc's sound engineers have produced another fine well-balanced recording.

Sonic and musical demonstration disc par excellence.......2000-08-16

This is one of the very first CDs that I ever bought and it is safe to say that of the 300 or so CDs that I've collected over the past ten years, it is still probably the finest in terms of engineering quality. From the most tenuous whisper to the most thunderous tutti, even the minutest detail comes through with the utmost transparency, in totally realistic aural projection and dynamic perspective. One could use the overwhelming organ-laced climaxes of Cockaigne Overture and Enigma Variations to test the dynamic limits of one's sound system and yet the sound always remains crisp, never degenerating into noise.

Most compilations of composers works usually only feature, at best, maybe one or two works in recordings that are of outstanding quality, especially if different artists are featured. Such is absolutely not the case with this collection, one of the finest of its sort ever issued.

This box makes a perfect one stop shopping choice for the major, most-well-known works the British composer Sir Edward Elgar. The title is misleading though. The box, on 8 CDs at an incredible price, contains both Orchestral AND Choral works.

Recently I have begun buying titles in Sony's British Import series "Sir Thomas Beecham: The Original CBS Recordings" and I must say I am enjoying them very much. Virtually all of the CDs in this line feature mono performances from the early 1950s, but not only are some of them the conductor's best accounts of a given work, many of the selections are pieces TB never even made in stereo. Case in point, these Elgar recordings of the Cockaigne Overture, Serenade for Strings and Enigma Variations. Surprisingly, England's most famous conductor and composer rarely partnered, but Elgar did ask TB to record Enigma once technology had sufficiently improved as the composer was never truly happy with the rendition he laid down for posterity. Beecham obliged twenty years after the composer's death with this historic 1954 performance, the highlight of this CD. Sure there are better sounding stereo accounts out there, but none match the fire and intensity that Beecham offers here, not even fellow countrymen Boult or Barbirolli. In all, "Sir Thomas Beecham: The Original CBS Recordings" is a delightful series and I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more of them.
