Moravec's recordings are too few and far between, so this disc of his live recital at the 2000 Prague Spring Festival is an important release, especially since the great pianist had not previously recorded the Haydn and Janácek works. They are wonderfully done. Moravec wrings all the humor and simple beauty from the Haydn Sonata, and the moving Janácek Sonata, a two-movement work depicting the tragic outcome of a 1905 protest demonstration, gets a wrenching interpretation that's the best on CD. Moravec has always been considered a master Chopin pianist, and his selections here are impeccably played, with a spontaneity and subtle rubato that rival his treasured studio recordings. The closing item, a color-drenched Debussy Ondine, is on the same extraordinary level. Anyone even remotely interested in hearing outstanding pianism should get this; Moravec's fans will already have snapped it up. --Dan Davis
