Reynaldo Hahn Piano Works

Editorial Reviews

Lost and lingering near death... a stunning world premiere Pro Piano recording. Superb!!!!!! Favre-Kahn... unforgettable!

Album Description
It was in the context of the elegant life of the Belle Époque that Reynald Hahn’s sensibility and style were formed. His precocious talent, coupled with extraordinary personal charm, enabled Hahn to become, already as an adolescent, a celebrated presence in the late 19th-century salons of Paris. Ironically, those same salons sealed his posthumous fate. His music is, virtually by definition, "musique de salon," and with that comes an implication of lightness, of the pursuit of pleasure in art. Not one to indulge in an academic approach to composition, Reynaldo Hahn noted, with characteristic wit: "Heaviness, boredom, those one must avoid at all cost. The Muses do not wear glasses."

5 out of 5 stars Even my kid likes this!.......2005-11-07

This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

5 out of 5 stars Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

Bassoon Me again!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!.......2001-10-26

I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

Album Description

What makes a wonderful song? My own view is that a great song is that magical combination of a good poem with good music, resulting in a whole that is greater than the mere sum of its parts. This is a collection of some wonderful songs of France, both "classical" and pop, dating from about 1800 through the 20th century. There are songs of nostalgia, playfulness, tragedy, loneliness, irony, and mystery, mostly involving love in its myriad guises. It has been an adventure -- exploring the nuances of the language and the music. I hope you enjoy listening to these songs as much as we have enjoyed working on and performing them. Eileen Mager.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No no no no.......2005-02-07

Wonderful selections, but if we are looking for a beautiful voice this is not it. Screechy, forced, at times unlistenable. Sometimes we just have to no when to say no!

4 out of 5 stars A clever fusion.......2005-01-31

Imagine modern French chansons like Jacques Brel's Ne Me Quitte Pas or the well known Sous le Ciel de Paris performed in the style of Schubert lieder --- no percussion or elaborate instrumental backing, just a voice, singing in the traditional formal style, with piano accompaniment. That's roughly the idea behind Eileen Mager's recording of Classic French Songs.

It works well. The effect is not what one normally expects from French cafe music, but then, Mager includes songs by Debussy, Faure, and Satie, so it is to hardly surprising that the overall flavour is of a lieder recital. While Mager's voice is not the smoothest and most honeyed soprano around, and she uses falsetto for her upper range, nevertheless she hits the notes spot on, and the rough tones somehow suit the songs. Even as a lieder recital, one wants the hint of tobacco and absinthe when the song is about Mister Giorgina playing the accordion in a bistro with no name.

2 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2003-06-29

I'm sorry to be negative, but I feel that the two previous reviews are misleading. They implied I'd be hearing some fabulous unknown here--but no, this is a charming program sung by a roundly second-rate artist. Mager's voice has an unpleasant raspy quality which is completely unsuited to classical song and perhaps to high notes altogether. There's also the occasional breathiness and pitch instability. If you're used to hearing Susan Graham sing Hahn and Janet Baker sing Faure, be prepared for a disconcerting experience. There's a reason this CD is not on a major label. Mager is somewhat more credible on the popular songs, however, and perhaps she'll concentrate on those in the future. The one 100% enjoyable and polished song on the CD is "Mister Georgina"--we want more like that!

5 out of 5 stars What a Voice!.......2001-09-28

Not knowing French but loving the country's music, I purchased this CD expecting to hear a culture of songs that could be added to my collection. I was not disappointed. Actually, I added a bonus to my collection because of the manner by which these songs were presented. The feeling of "being there" is in every song. From the intro of the sounds of Paris to the dancing in Piccadilly Square (a Frenchman's view of an English music hall femme fatale) ... accomplished by a single voice accompanied by piano.

What a voice! Eileen Mager's voice is whatever she wishes it to be ... early English, classical Italian, festival German, or seductive French. The range of her voice is from a rich deep contralto singing "Blues" by Ferre to an angelic soprano singing "Si Mes Vers Avaient Des Ailes" by Reynaldo Hahn. I was very impressed with her "Mister Giorgina" by Ferre.

Ellen Brown is a sought-after accompanist in all of Phoenix ... this CD displays the reason. She feels the music with the soloist.

I am looking forward to Eileen Mager's other CDs, "Christmas Treasures," "Vivaldi a Due Voce," and "Broadway: Love & Laughter," and I highly recommend to all who love an absolutely beautiful voice in their entertainment room this CD of "Classic French Songs."

5 out of 5 stars What a fabulous CD!.......2001-09-04

I loved this CD. As a matter of fact, my son and I listened to it seven times the first day. Why?

Because it's so interesting, and has such an incredible breadth of repertoire and expression--from the mischievous and boisterous "Paris Canaille" to the sweet, delicate and operatic "Le Bonheur Est Chose Legere"; and from the out-and-out coquettish fun of Satie's "La Diva De 'L'Empire'" to the dreamy joy of Duparc's "L'Invitation Au Voyage" to the anguish of Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas." I especially enjoyed hearing, in addition to Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prevert's "Les Feuilles Mortes" ("Autumn Leaves"), another song by the same composer and lyricist that is completely unfamiliar to American listeners, the deeply moving World War II remembrance called "Barbara."

Because it's gorgeous. Eileen Mager's voice has great purity and clarity of tone, effortless delivery. Her French diction is so clean that my five-year-old son can (and does) easily pick up and repeat even the French that goes at rapid-fire speed. She uses a broad palette of vocal colors; and her range extends from the lyric coloratura soprano to the bluesy alto. Ms. Mager and her excellent accompanist, Ellen Brown, work together as one; and Ms. Brown, who is also an arranger and who accompanied her on their earlier CD, "Christmas Treausures," adds a special touch of her own to the songs.

The accompanying CD booklet contains translations of all the songs (done by the singer herself, with the able help and counsel of French poet/librettist/teacher Michel Sarda), so listeners who don't speak French will be able to enjoy the recording as much as those who do.

One parting comment: Many singers dabble in genres other than their home genre, calling it "crossover." Unfortunately, many don't sound right in genres other than their own. But Ms. Mager is so comfortable and "right" in the various genres on this CD that it would be difficult to decide which her "home" genre actually is.

Reynaldo Hahn led a colorful life as boulevardier, friend of Proust, music critic, pianist, singer, conductor, and composer. He's best remembered for his many songs and for his operetta, Ciboulette, which has retained its popularity among his 17 stage works. His piano music hasn't fared as well, so it's good to have Le Rossignol Éperdu, a collection of 53 miniatures (only a handful over three minutes) available in sympathetic performances recorded at age 86 by the master of the Romantic piano, Earl Wild. Wild is known for his virtuosity and poetry, and these salon pieces stress the latter quality in his playing. He captures the simple, unaffected charm of the works, sometimes sounding as if he's improvising on the keyboard--an important reason why he's such a successful interpreter. Wild also succeeds in creating the intimate atmosphere they require, as well as the classic simplicity that links them to the French piano tradition. No one will want to listen to all 53 in one sitting, but taken in chunks of five or six, they make a pleasant appetizer to heavier fare. Warm sound and playing complete the picture. --Dan Davis

Album Description

French composer Reynaldo Hahn wrote very few solo piano compositions. This world première two disc recording performed here by the GRAMMY® Award - winning pianist Earl Wild, includes the very rare cycle of 53 solo piano compositions entitled, Le Rossignol Éperdu (The Bewildered Nightingale). Recorded here in its entirety for the first time, these fifty-three delightful poèmes for piano were composed between 1899 and 1911. Each of these pieces are inspired by great poets; Verlaine, Molière, Flaubert, Voltaire, Baudelaire, Goethe, Musset and Hugo. The Le Rossignol Éperdu consists of four individual suites; I. Premiere, II. Orient, III. Carnet de Voyage and IV. Versailles. This extraordinary group of miniatures reflects varying impressions, sketches and thoughts during Reynaldo Hahn's countless travels. The music is played with passionate Belle Époque elegance by the Romantic Master himself, Earl Wild. The informative liner notes by Lord Londonderry are written in b! oth English and French.

Rather than repeat word-by-word the wonderful words of Mr Morrison, I will merely exclaim--YES! I have been waiting for a complete recording of this collection for decades, and never expected that its disk début would be left to the magical hands of none other than Earl Wilde (b. 1915, Pittsburgh.) A connoisseur's delight, all around, and in gorgeous recorded sound.

5 out of 5 stars Charm and Melancholy.......2003-07-07

Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) is little known today. When he is remembered it is primarily for two songs, 'L'heure exquise,' and 'Si mes vers avaient des ailes,' two of the most beautiful French songs in the repertoire. In his day, though, he was a musical Parisian man about town. He had come to Paris from his native Venezuela as a toddler and never left. He studied composition at the Conservatoire with Jules Massenet. He conducted at the Opéra Comique, wrote operettas, the most remembered of which is 'Ciboulette,' and many songs. He wrote a sparkling piano concerto for which he was the piano soloist at the première. He had a good baritone voice and sang his songs, always with a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, at many élite private gatherings. He met Proust in his teens, they were lovers for a time, remained friends for life, and he is generally considered to be the model for Jean Santeuil in Proust's 'In Search of Lost Time' ('À la recherche du temps perdu').

This 2-CD collection of 53 piano miniatures was written between 1898 and 1911 and published by Heugel & Cie. in 1912. In the evocative title, 'Le Rossignol éperdu,' the 'rossignol' ('nightingale') is undoubtedly the composer; the adjective 'éperdu' may mean, variously, 'bewildered,''ecstatic,' or 'distraught', and perhaps in this case all of these. The pieces, some of them only a page long, are rather arbitrarily collected into four suites: I. Première Suite, II. Orient, III. Carnet de voyage (Travel Diary), and IV. Versailles. Most of the pieces have a poetic epigraph from writers such as Verlaine, Musset, Goethe, Mme. de Sevigné, Molière.

Hahn was a conservative composer whose musical language rarely went beyond that of, say, Fauré. Everything he wrote is meticulously crafted. The tone of these pieces is a gently nostalgic melancholy. In the only written comment he ever made about these pieces he said he had written them with 'suppressed tears.'

The whole set has never been recorded before as far as I know. It is astounding, actually, that at age 86 Earl Wild would undertake this project. One gathers that he had to learn most of them for the first time. He brings his usual grace and musicality to the pieces. His limpid playing brings out the occasional unusual harmonic twists. His legendary legato is at the service of the songful lines of Hahn's lapidary 'poèmes.'

I would pick for particular attention the sweetly mysterious 'Mirage,' the slowly accelerating stirring of 'Le Reveil de Flore' ('The Awakening of Spring'), the gentle fanfares of 'Le Jardin de Pétrarque,' the sensuality of 'Ivresse' ('Ecstasy'), the gently rocking 'En Caïque' ('In a Boat'). I suppose a point of comparison would be the miniatures of Federico Mompou or even of Erik Satie. But Hahn had his own voice.

Hahn is probably not a great composer. He knew what he could do, though, and he did it very well. His miniatures, each lapidary, are to be treasured one by one. (Indeed, I would strongly urge you to listen to only a few at a time.) We are indebted to Earl Wild for making this recording. It is unlikely to be bettered.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars TThis record is a copy of..........2002-01-11

This excellent recording of the great brazilian-french pianist si very good... but it's a copy of two LP : a copy of Le piano français de chabrier à Debussy (Erato recording) and the two Fauré's Nocturnes are copy of a French CBS recording entirely consacred to Fauré and never transferred in CD...
Those interprétations are not Brazilian recordings. The same problems for the recording, in the same lable, of Jacques Klein : the Chopin's Preludes are copy of Richter live in Tokyo; the recording of Estelina Epstein is a copy of... philips and Ina Memoire-Vive recordings of Clara Haskil! And the Anna Stella Schic recording, always in the same Brazilan collection, a copy of Villa Lobos records for EMI and Mendelssohn records for Solstice...
        Best regards.
