Schubert: Piano Trio in E flat major D 929

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Florestan Trio's Schubert bristles with energy and forward momentum. It's a far cry from the comfortable, upholstered Schubert of yore, leaving an impression that every note has been freshly rethought, scraped clean of its overlay of encrusted tradition. Tempos are brisk; a huge dynamic range replaces the traditionally narrow one; and the ensemble turns on a dime from very soft to very loud. There's even a nod to historically informed performance practice in the occasional clipped phrase endings and pianist Susan Tomes's sharp staccato effects. The lean strings also offer a stark contrast to the big-toned violin of Isaac Stern and Leonard Rose's famously juicy cello in the Stern Trio's version of the work on Sony. The Florestan Trio, with its urgent playing, also occupies a spot at the other end of the spectrum from the warm, more leisurely group led by Andras Schiff in their version on Teldec. The Florestan's filler is Schubert's original version of the work's finale. This ear-opening Schubert, cooler than its rivals, joins them at the top of the recommended pile. --Dan Davis

Schubert's two piano trios are the products of his last years when, knowing that he was ill and dying, he still managed to produce dozens of songs and chamber music masterpieces, as well as pursue counterpoint studies and make plans for further orchestral and stage works. Add to this the earlier String Trio and a couple of miscellaneous single movements, and his output in "trio" form is complete. Both of the piano trios are typically large works, generously stuffed with first-rate tunes, some of which you may recognize without knowing exactly where they came from. These excellent performances at a "twofer" price offer the most convenient and cost effective way to get to know this marvelous music. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem Worth Taking Without Hesitation!.......2005-10-21

The Grumiaux Trio and the Beaux Arts trio are highly respected groups in the domain of chamber music and rank as highly as groups such as the Guarneri Quartet. These earlier performances of Schubert are exquisite in their execution and the only defect here is perhaps a slightly reduced sound quality than your typical contemporary performances due to its age. This is barely noticeable however and this CD is really a steal for the price.

The trios of Schubert are a good way of exploring various periods of his life in which he composed drastically different arrangements. His Piano Trio D. 28 is a good example of his foundations in Mozart and early Beethoven until you reach his Piano Trio D. 929 (performed often in Kurbrick's 'Barry Lyndon') where Schubert explores much more on impressionistic themes than romantic ones. Such themes were only pursued later by composers such as Brahms and Schumann. Liszt's romanticism was also stongly influenced by both Beethoven and Schubert. Of the performances I really have nothing to say as they are simply flawless and there are few I could compare. The sound has some disadvantages but not really significant ones.

This is really a magnificent performance giving you Schubert's complete trios on two CDs. For the quality of performance you get it's a bargain. I am glad I got it as it was worth every dollar.

4 out of 5 stars first CD best.......2005-10-03

I enjoyed the string trios and first piano trio far more than the piano trios on the second CD. Those pieces seemed to stretch Schubert's tendency to repeat sections with slow development to the limit of my toleration. The recordings here are somewhat distant at times but the individual instruments are easy to discern. My comment above about the compositions reflects personal taste -- reasons I generally prefer Beethoven to Schubert. If the pace of his development is to your liking you might very well consider this a "5 star" recording. Recommended with some reservations.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to buy Schubert's chamber music.......2005-08-03

A wonderful 2 CD set of Schubert's trios played by excellent musicians. I particularly like the Beaux Arts Trio and their playing of the piano trios. A great way to consolidate your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but too "intellectualized".......2002-08-20

This is an excellent CD to have; the Beaux Arts Trio is excellent, but sometimes their interpretation is too intellectual and doesn't care enough for the beauty of Schubert's melodies. For example, in the second movement of Schubert E flat Piano trio, the gorgeous solo, the accompaniment to the gorgeous cello solo, then piano solo, is staccato, which takes much of the beauty out of this gorgeous section. I could picture the three guys sitting there and saying, "The melody line is long, so we should make the accompaniment short." When this melody recurs in the fourth movement, it's played much much much too quickly, again taking the beauty, the melancholy out of it. It's clear in those gorgeous waterfall-like descending chords on the piano that Pressler is racing and shouldn't be. After the solo in the second movement, the violin gets too staccato and makes part of the piece unbearably corny, particularly during the fortissimo parts. The B flat in particular tends to race. However, the playing is still very expressive; Pressler in particular and Greenhouse next. I reccomend this CD very highly.

5 out of 5 stars One Schubert CD YOU Should Get.......2001-04-23

There just doesn't seem to be quite the equal for their interpretations of the classical repertoire, but even among the numerous remarkable recordings the Beaux Arts Trio has produced, this gorgeous rendering of Schubert decisively stands out.

Trio No.1 in B flat Major is my favourite pick, with all of its very expansive movements (length-wise, rather than musically, which often make the piece sound boring in lesser hands) treated with extremely delicate and tasteful pacings. One more thing that is very noticeable is the lyricism of the cello tone that almost resembles that of a human voice; it is so light and transparent, as perfectly exhibited in the second movement of the Trio No.1, that at times it could be mistaken for violin.

This is one Schubert recording you should not miss, and I actually think I like this more than the overplayed (although very much deservedly) Trout Quintet. Enjoy!

clearly have wax in their ears/speakers. Through a high fidelity system of any reasonable quality, these recordings sound warm, glorious, superb. And, of course, these compositions are performed in a manner that matches their quality. Among Schubert's best works, in my opinion.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Performed with real gusto!.......2004-05-16

This recording of Schubert's two piano trios (the only two he wrote) is a real joy. Three masters of the trade provide a classy, lively, lyrical performance that is just full of enthusiasm and gusto (especially the B flat D898).

I admit that I have not heard the two higher-priced recordings recommended by Gramophone, but I'd be very surprised if anyone could top this performance. This is one of my most frequently played CD sets -- for good reason. [I say much the same about the Mozart Piano Quartets recording on Naxos, for the same reasons.]

5 out of 5 stars PURE MUSIC MAGIC.......2002-10-31

THESE TWO PIANO TRIOS ARE THE BEST EVER COMPOSED FOR THE VIOLIN, CELLO, AND PIANO. SCHUBERTS MELODIC GENIUS IS ON DISPLAY IN THESE WORKS. ASHKENAZYS KEYBOARD TEMPO IS PERFECT AND ZUKERMANS PLAYING IS WARM AND BRILLIANT. HARRELLS CELLO SOUNDS RICH AND FULL. FANS OF STANLEY KUBRICKS FILM BARRY LYNDON WILL RECALL HIS USE OF THE SECOND MOVEMENT OF THE E FLAT MAJOR IN THE DELIBERATELY PACED DRAWING ROOM SCENES. THE MUSIC FIT PERFECTLY. THE SLOW MOVEMENT THEME RETURNS IN THE FINAL MOVEMENT TO CONTRAST WITH A ROCKING, LIVELY ALLEGRO. THE B FLAT MAJOR OPENS WITH A BEETHOVEN LIKE HEROIC THEME AND IS FOLLOWED BY ONE OF SCHUBERTS MOST EXPRESSIVE MELODIES. A BOUNCY SCHERZO IS THEN FOLLOWED BY A WELL CONSTRUCTED RONDO THAT IS A FINE ENDING TO A GREAT PIECE OF MUSIC. BUYING THESE TOGETHER IN THIS TWO CD CASE IS BEST. THEY WERE ALWAYS SPLIT UP TILL NOW. SCHUBERT ROCKS!!

Music for Thinking should be considered a MUST HAVE!! The recordings are beautiful, and can be played continuosly in the backgroung while you are writing, reading, or studying. I find Music for Thinking to be VERY effective and can be played all day long. I use this CD to create a condusive study and work environment!

3 out of 5 stars A nice sound, not enough clarity.......2000-07-11

If you are looking for something to make you think at a higher level, then this is not your album. The music on this CD is familiar to anyone who enjoys classical music. And I will admit that it does provide the correct setting for focusing on a task. I only wish that the clarity of the recording was more pure. The first time that I played this CD I wondered if my equalizer had been bumped; the songs sounded flat. In any event, if you are looking for a nice blend of classical music, something to provide a calm atmosphere, this is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06

Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.

You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:

- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér

Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.

As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.

1 out of 5 stars Will not buy this.......2007-03-16

I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.

4 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-12-19

One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19

Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.

1 out of 5 stars Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14

This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

5 out of 5 stars The definitive second piano trio of Schubert! .......2004-08-24

Tto describe in few words : superb . All this set deserves the best and highest adjectives . Musicality technician equipment and vitality characterize all and every one of these pieces .
I had the honor of knowing Istomin in Caracas September 1979 in a piano recital .
In the first part he played a mesmerized Bergamasque suite and in the second half he played an unforgettable reading of the Schubert sonata D960.
Istomin was another pianist who greW up under the cosmic talent of Pau Casals , together with Stern that wonderful gifted musician, and nothing less than Leonard Rose who in my personal opinion has been the best american cellist in the century .
Acquire this set as soon as you can!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably good performance!.......2000-04-12

This combination of lovely Schubert trios and mangnificent performers must be heard to be believed. Rose, Stern, and Istomin sound as though they are a single person. I heard this recording years ago and I can still remember it as though it were yesterday. A "must hear."

--Dan Davis

        5 out of 5 stars I second that opinion!.......2006-12-16

To the uninitiated, Schubert's Piano Trio in E-Flat Major is the theme that accompanies Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon". As with the other reviewer, Schubert fell off my radar completely with the exception of his fantastic "Trout" quintet. As it turns out, I too am one of the uninitiated who was haunted by the sublime beauty of the theme in Kubrick's film, but couldn't place the composer. Upon identification, I immediately ran out and purchased this particular CD. My words of praise do this work small justice, and I can't begin to express my delight in stumbling upon this magnificent composer and this incredible performance of his work.

        5 out of 5 stars Schubert's lyrical genius.......2004-07-20

This beautiful album showcases the lyrical genius of Franz Schubert. I have listened to classical music for years, but up until I purchased this album I had never given Schubert a fair hearing. But now, having heard his music, and become thorougly overwhelmed by his genius, I can only stand in awe of him, much as I have already done by Mozart.

Schubert apparently wrestled with this piano trio for a long time, repeatedly tearing up his work and starting over, so unworthy and incapable did he feel himself to be writing anything that might be able to be even half as good as Beethoven's Archduke Trio. The question for Schubert, as for many other composers of that era was simply, how could they push forward into any new musical frontier, after Beethoven? Schubert, however, succeeded in forging a uniquely personal and lyrical style of his own: a clear lyrical line, sensitive, hopeful, sometimes passionate, sort of a very unique synthesis between Mozart and Beethoven.

Like Proust, he wrote on a grand scale, not knowing when to stop; the music just flows on and on, endlessly inventive. The critics said it was too long to sit through. As a result of this criticism, Schubert cut sections out of the final movement. (Fortunately, in this recording we are given both versions of the last movement.)

All I can tell you is, buy this album, listen to it. Give it a hearing, and you will fall in love with this composer. And as for the Florestan Trio's performance on this recording, all I have is praise; it is simply flawless. The sound quality is also superlative. This is a must-have album. No matter how many classical albums you own, this will easily become one of your favorites.
