Well, perhaps the party wasn't as jolly as we thought. Part one of this 1815 "Schubertiad"--found in volume 20 of this complete Schubert song edition--ended with a couple of jolly drinking songs. Here you get the fun stuff at the beginning (another drinking song), and end with The Grave. It's a perfect musical portrait of what a few too many drinks and some morose speculation will do to an otherwise pleasant evening among friends. Vastly entertaining. --David Hurwitz
