Album Description
It, regrettably, comes as a surprise to many, including highly informed and well-trained musicians that among the most important of the compositions of William Grant Still are his several operas. (NOTE: The Eileen Southern Biographical Dictionary of African American and African Musicians of 1982 lists six operas, but in fact there are nine). In addition to Highway One on this recording, there are also the operas: Blue Street, Troubled Island, A Bayou Legend, A Southern Interlude, Costaso, Mota, The Pillar, and Minette Fontaine. Judith Anne Still writes: "I will say this, my father had three loves in his life, in this order of importance: the Creator, his family, and the world of opera. He wanted most of all to be known as a composer of operas of great merit. He worked towards this goal with all his heart and mind, from the age of 14 until he became ill in the early 1970s, for 75 years. Most opera companies in the 20th century would not do the operas of William ! Grant Still because of his color. The fact that Still operas were not done, while Porgy was done, broke the composers heart. There is much to be accomplished by way of justification. I am grateful to my parents for dedicating this opera to me and my family, and to Louise Toppin, Philip Brunelle and VIDEMUS for putting their enormous talents and energies into this project. Bravo to the immortals who have opened the road to realizing the long-ago dream of a kind, noble and magnificently gifted man."

Great album.......2007-06-22
This was a great blast from the past for me. They were a great band and this is a good collection of their main hits that I remember. Love the lead singer's voice.
Highway 101: Greatest Hits.......2007-02-04
I'm not a big country western fan, but this a great CD. Anyone could just about enjoy this CD. Good Vocals and A Great Beat. The quality of this CD is very good! The clarity of instruments and vocals is darned nice. I will definetly slip this one in with my smooth jazz and rock CDs.
Highway 101: Greatest Hits: A Great Road to Travel.......2006-07-30
Highway 101's heydays were in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with an evolving cast of performers, but a compilation album of their greatest hits makes one realize just how good they were in that time. Especially good was the original cast of players, led by Paulette Carlson (of Hutchinson, Minnesota) and Cactus Moser - when Highway 101 is talked about in their place in country music, it should be about the group that has the four people on this album. Aside from their big hits (Cry, Cry, Cry; Just Say Yes, etc.), there are hits of lesser size on this album that sound just as good. The group ran headlong into some of the huge acts that exploded in the 1980s and therefore didn't receive all of the press that I thought that they deserved, but they were still very popular and a darned good group for their unfortunately short period of time. This album is thoroughly enjoyable and well worth purchasing.
all songs.......2005-10-12
Every one of these songs are good because they are their greatest hits.
Very underrated group!.......2005-05-10
Highway 101 wasn't around very long (the orignal lineup was together for 4 years), but what an impact they made in the world of counrty music. I really don't consider them a country act, more like a country/rock/pop act. With Paulette Carlson on vocals, Cactus Moser (who I think is often overlooked) on drums, Jack Daniels on guitar, and Curtis Stone on bass, Highway 101 had a unique way of getting a listener's attention. Paulette's husky, Stevie Nicks-like vocals are instantly recognizable and give each song that extra "kick". Catcus' drumming, although simple, fits perfectly with what the band was trying to accomplish musically-nothing fancy, but straight to the point and something you can tap your foot to. Jack Daniels is a really good guitarist who is often overshadowed by Paulette's vocals, but he could harmonize with the best. Curtis Stone not only provided nice bass lines, he also could play a mean mandolin. Another aspect of Highway 101's music is the harmonies provided by Cactus, Jack, and Curtis. Just listen to "Somewhere Tonight" or "Who's Lonely Now?" if you want to hear what I'm talking about.
As far as this album, it has most of the band's best songs from the original lineup era, with the highlights being "The Bed You Made For Me"(co-written by Carlson), the classic "Whiskey, If You Were A Woman", and my personal favorite "Cry, Cry, Cry". If you aren't familiar with Highway 101, this is a perfect starter album to get a feel of what they were all about.
Shortly after this album was released, Paulette Carlson left the band for a solo career. The band did continue with the beautiful Nikki Nelson, who was a good singer in her own right, but it just wasn't the same w/o Carlson. However, the band did achieve success with the 1991 album "Big Bang Boom", with the title track being one of my favorite Highway 101 songs. The band followed up "Big Bang Boom" with the 1993 album "The New Frontier" with no success. By this time, Jack Daniels departed and the band seemed to be on its last legs. In 1996, Carlson reunited with Daniels and Stone (Moser was not a part of the reunion) for 2 albums, Reuntied and Latest and Greatest, with no success either. Carlson and Daniels left Highway 101 again shortly after L&G, only to have Stone and Moser reform Highway 101 with vocalist Chrislynn Lee and guitarist Charlie White to record the album "BIg Sky" in 1999. The album didn't fare well, and in 2002 White left the band to be replaced by Justin Weaver. The band has plans to record a new album, and I for one would love to see that happen. If the original lineup got back together, that would be even better...

watered down country music. .......2007-03-18
i saw these guys on valentine's day, 1988, at the local redneck rodeo, and they were actually ok. a word of warning: this music has not aged well, so the buyer better beware.
The revolution started here.......2004-02-21
Highway 101 brought a rock edge to country music while preserving the essence of what country music is about. They blazed the trail for Clint Black, Garth Brooks and the rest of the new generation. This was the first of three albums (plus a greatest hits album) recorded by the original line-up before Paulette left for the first time (there was a reunion in the nineties). All three albums are equally good but this was the one that grabbed everybody's attention, simply because it was the first.
The line-up was Paulette Carlson (lead vocals and guitar), Cactus Moser (drums and vocals), Curtis Stone (bass and vocals) and Jack Daniels (electric guitar and vocals). The album has a very upbeat feel, with a sense of urgency about it not normally apparent in country music.
The debut single, The bed you made for me, reached number four on the country chart, with the follow-up, Whiskey if you were a woman, going two better. The remaining two singles from this album, Somewhere tonight and Cry cry cry (an original song, not a cover of the Johnny Cash oldie), both made number one. Any of the other songs could have been selected for single release but weren't. Of the other songs, Woman walk the line is a cover of a song first recorded by Emmylou (who also co-wrote it) for her concept album, Ballad of Sally Rose. Bridge across forever is an early example of the songwriting skills of Matraca Berg, one of country music's finest songwriters. Members of Highway 101 also contributed songs, with Paulette writing two (The bed you made for me, Are you still mine) and co-writing a third, Good Goodbye, while Cactus and Curtis together wrote One step closer.
Country music was never the same again after Highway 101 hit Nashville. Listen to this album and you'll realize why. It is just a shame that they did not stay together for longer than three albums.
The greatest ever.......2004-01-25
I'm not one for "...the greatest ever..." kind of praise, nor am I a "fan" type of person, but after a lifetime of listening to country and western music (they were once two separate and very different genres), all I can say about Highway 101, and especially Paulette Carlson, is that this is the greatest C&W group of all time. I have crossed the country back and forth more times than I can remember, and listened to Highway 101 all the way across and back---about 2,000 times. Great songs, intelligent lyrics, incredible backing...and Paulette Carlson's spectacular voice and style. The Greatest Ever!
At least a dozen divorces worth of great music here.......2001-02-25
This is an album even people who hate country music won't be able to help but like. Paulette Carlson is a throaty, country-flavored Stevie Nicks, one of perhaps a half-dozen truly oustanding female vocalists of all genres. Her haunting voice transcends the lyrics and takes you somewhere else. Listening to Paulette is like a beautiful mountain stream, you dream of swimming in it, splashing, playing, somehow becoming one with it. Ok, enough of the mushy stuff. There are a lot of fun songs on this album, enough for at least a dozen divorces. Highway 101 travels through lyin', cheatin', alcoholism, some more cheating, everything but pickups, trains, and puppy dogs. Call the writing "manufactured" if you want, but the Highway's lyrics are both fun and intelligent. I wore out the 101 cassette I kept in my car and after a gap of five or so years, came back for the CD. It's everything I remembered and more. If I ever get the chance to see this lady sing in public, I won't miss it. And that's not to put down the rest of Highway 101; their music is tight, the harmony's excellent, I'm glad they're back together. If you buy this album and don't absolutely love it, MAIL IT TO ME!
This is Highway 101 at it's very best, best buy ever........1999-09-04
one little problem, the cover you display has all different songs on it.I am trying to locate the original album on cd. Side 1 has Honky tonk heart, Road To Your Heart & Feed the Fire. Side 2 has There Goes My Love, Desperate Road & All the Reasons Why. If It's on CD I would love to have it. JIM JIM

Fresh. I love it........2007-07-18
I actually heard track 1 (Highway One) while on a plane. The song impressed me so much that I looked up the album and bought it. I really enjoy this band. They are comparable to Little Big Town (but less folksy). Anyway, I recommend this CD to my friends. Enjoy!
Habit forming ... .......2007-07-12
I received this CD as a gift from an audiophile friend. It hasn't left my CD player since (which, quite honestly, is totally out of character for me). Great writing, wonderful harmonies, terrific hooks -- a masterful blend of simple and complex that just gets better with every listen.

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

In September of 1961, Ray Price was a superstar and Willie Nelson was his bass player. As part of Price's Cherokee Cowboys, Willie played on Price's pioneering Bob Wills tribute LP San Antonio Rose. Twenty years later, after Willie had become superstar in his own right, the two re-teamed for a second San Antonio Rose, this one a set of honky-tonk and Western swing duets that yielded two Top 10 singles. Twenty-two years after that release, they're back for yet another exquisite, relaxed romp through the same Texas-Southwestern axis. The tunes are familiar: classics by Floyd Tillman ("I'll Keep on Loving You") and Bob Wills ("Deep Water"), a Price original ("Soft Rain"), an obscure Willie original ("I'm So Ashamed"), and a couple of Willie tunes that Price rendered hits ("I Just Destroyed the World," "I'm Still Not Over You"). Their understated approach isn't the only strength. Willie, at 70, and Price, at 77, retain nearly all of their vocal power, a result of near-nonstop touring that keeps their voices limber, supremely expressive, and, most importantly, as capable of moving a listener as they were decades ago. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
So much better than most current Country music.......2006-06-02
Willie and Ray sound incredible together. This record goes to show that some voices don't grow old but just mellow and develop different personalities.
Unexpected Beauty In The Face Of Underwhelming Objectivity.......2005-11-23
Wow, a five-star review. Well, yes, it is, and with good reason. Willie Nelson, an artist who, like many, has given himself over to the monster otherwise known as MOR, has created an album here that is a throwback to a time when records were simple affairs, just a few guys and their instruments belting out tunes for everyone to enjoy.
Indeed, it's the simplicity of this record that allows the pure joy of the work to shine. This is clearly the kind of work that the artists create from sheer love of country music, rather than any cultural or economic imperative (Willie's tax problems aside).
Ray Price shines on this album as well, complementing his good friend's wandering lyrical melodies with his own rocksteady baritone stylings. To use a cliche (if I may), theirs is a vocal match made in heaven, or at least in the honkytonks of Texas. Each song is a meditation on life, loss, love and music; each tune weaves its own individual path through the album, creating a strong theme throughout the piece.
Don't expect fancy musicianship or throaty theatrics from this album, but do expect an album that is both mature and vital, brimming with life yet inexorably contemplative.
Ray Price is singin' better than ever........2004-01-13
Willie's voice hasn't changed a bit, and Ray is singing better than he ever has.
If you're a fan of "good" country music then pick up this album. Buy this cd and then call every country music radio station in your area and surrounding areas and request some music from this record. It was recently nominated for a Grammy and these two guys deserve some airplay on the radio. Let's get people knowing about this album.
I give it five stars because there isn't a bad song on it.
the way it was, and is.......2003-09-23
If this isn't a great album, it's something just as worthy: a good, solid, sturdy one. Two pros do what they do best, Texas honkytonk shuffles, sad songs of faded love, and stripped-down Western swing. Willie Nelson and Ray Price are the masters of this variety of grown-up music. Price's presence is a particular treat. He records less often than Nelson does, and if he isn't as wildly experimental, he is a dependable exponent of a nearly lost kind of country music. You can't fake these very fine, unsparing songs, in which no falsehood or sentimentality is to be discerned. You have to have lived these stories, and no young, callow hunk with a big cowboy hat and an obnoxiously loud, soulless band could even try. And is there a truer song -- in any genre -- than the late Floyd Tillman's "This Cold War with You"?
Good, but not as good as the first time........2003-09-20
Don't get this expecting something on the same level as "San Antonio Rose." This is fantastic music, but not nearly as good as their first offering.
Willie is in fantastic voice here. He definately redeems himself after "Beer For My Horses."
Ray Price is in excellent voice.
This is an excellent swing record, and ten times better than the best stuff coming out of Nashville these days. But, But, But, please don't get this hoping for something as good as "San Antonio Rose."

Great album from Nikki and the boys.......2005-01-14
This album, later re-issued in the UK with the title Country classics (not to be confused with a completely different USA compilation with the same title), was the second and last album that Highway 101 recorded with Nikki Nelson as lead singer. Nikki was a brilliant singer in her own way, with a vibrant personality. Nikki's voice is not as distinctive as Highway 101's original singer, Paulette Carlson, but it is a much smoother voice that will appeal to people who don't necessarily like Paulette's voice. Of the original musicians, Cactus Moser and Curtis Stone remained to provide not only the music but many of the songs here - they each co-wrote a few songs though never with each other.
As with so many Highway 101 albums, whoever is lead singer, this a generally upbeat album. Although some of the songs were originally written a few years before this album was recorded in 1993, I have not heard any of the songs elsewhere so these may be the original recordings - this includes Home on the range, a very different song from the classic western song of the same title.
Actually, Home on the range is one of my favorite tracks here along with You baby you, No chance to dance, Fastest healing broken heart and the slightly silly but amusing and very clever You are what you do.
This album didn't get much attention from American country radio stations so the group was left to ponder its future. Nikki left to pursue a solo career - unsuccessful, as it turned out - while Cactus and Curtis managed to persuade Paulette to rejoin them for a couple of years before she left again. They then found another singer, Chrislynn Lee, who can be heard on their Big sky album.
This may not be the most essential Highway 101 album, but it is far better than you might think based on its commercial failure, with many great country songs, not just those I've mentioned.
happy to see this on c.d........1998-11-02
I had this on tape but damaged the tape some time ago. I have searched the world over----well the lower 48 at least and could not find a replacement. Tryed amazon.com and could not believe that I found it so quickly-----and on c.d. no less. Nikki Nelson(the female artist) on this tape/c.d. has a beautiful voice and I counted on this tape to be my "going home tape" as I am an over the road trucker. On my home bound run---as I was approaching home----I would put this tape in and crank it up-----It always got me home. Can't tell you how happy I am to find it again.

Eight new songs plus four hits.......2005-01-24
This album marked the beginning of Paulette Carlson's second spell with Highway 101, in which she was once again reunited with Curtis Stone and Jack Daniels. The other original member, Cactus Moser, was not part of the line-up.
Eight new songs were recorded for the album. Most of them are originals but there is a great cover of Have you ever really loved a woman, written and originally recorded by Bryan Adams. Whether singing ballads or up-tempo-rockers, Paulette sounds as good as ever on the new recordings. The album opens with Where'd you get your cheating from, in which Paulette describes which characteristics a man got from each of his parents but wonders about his cheating. Among the other new songs, I particularly like Texas girl and the only new song that Paulette wrote for the album, She don't have the heart to love you.
The four re-issued songs (licensed from Warner) are The bed you made for me (their first hit) and three songs that didn't make their Greatest hits compilation (Setting me up, All the reasons why, Walking talking crying barely beating broken heart). All four have since been made on the American compilation Country classics, which includes other Highway 101 hits such as Bing bang boom that also weren't on Greatest hits. So if you want those four tracks, buy Country classics.
This is a great album that was largely ignored except by Highway 101's loyal fans. It deserved to reach a much wider audience.

He worked towards this goal with all his heart and mind, from the age of 14 until he became ill in the early 1970's, for 75 years. Most opera companies in the 20th century would not do the operas of William ! Grant Still because of his color. The fact that Still operas were not done, while Porgy was done, broke the composer's heart. There is much to be accomplished by way of justification. I am grateful to my parent's for dedicating this opera to me and my family, and to Louise Toppin, Philip Brunelle and VIDEMUS for putting their enormous talents and energies into this project. Bravo to the immortals who have opened the road to realizing the long-ago dream of a kind, noble and magnificently gifted man."
