I wish this CD had been around when I was planning my wedding as it would have been great for helping the bride to select music! Still, it's wonderful to listen to now.

Wonderful intro To MEHDl ..........2006-06-08

I've always enjoyed Great Wedding music and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this site I discovered a group by the name of MEHDl (pronounced medie). After an online search I found their site (S00THINGMUSIC,C0M) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still a Tomaso Albinoni fan of, I find MEHDl to be a great addition to this CD. I had them both in my multi-disc CD player during the wedding and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.

Highly recommended. Even has suggestions for pre-ceremony, processional, ceremony, and recessional inside. 2 different versions of Midsummer Night's Dream march included - one with trumpet and organ and one with a full orchestra. Lots of great selections, well recorded.

The Complete Wedding Album.......2005-08-05

This album has a lot of great wedding music. It had all of the songs I was looking for. There also is great background music for the ceremony. Glad I purchased it

Almost the compete wedding album.......2004-05-07

I used this cd to help me plan which songs I wanted to use for each part of the wedding. This cd helps you suggest the placement for the prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional. The cd mainly has classical songs, but it does have a few of "today's" songs. There could have been a few more songs they could have added. But overall, its a good cd.

Absolutely excellent.......2002-07-06

This is the second disc in a 3-CD set; I reviewed the third disc (containing Symphonies Nos. 9, 11 and 12), and much of what I would otherwise say about this CD is contained there. I must stress, however, that especially for these particular symphonies, Boughton's choice to rein in the tempi and keep everything at a moderate speed is nothing short of brilliant. I've never heard a better recording of the Seventh or Eighth symphonies, mainly because I've never been able to hear as many notes in them before! It's so easy for Mendelssohn to sound harried and uptight, just because so many conductors view his music as little more than finger exercises for string players. Boughton obviously doesn't see things that way, and the result is music that doesn't sound frighteningly virtuosic or unapproachable, but friendly and exuberant--exactly the sort of feeling I imagine the young Mendelssohn meant to convey. Of course, as I mention in other reviews, it helps a lot that the English String Orchestra plays with such incredible vigor and spirit; their playing captures the true youthful joy in these symphonies, which many other orchestras don't (since they're trying to find the "adult" virtuosity in the pieces). This is not to say that the English String Orchestra doesn't do a knockout job technically, because they do; they take each of these extremely difficult pieces and make them sound easy to play. But it's the more moderate tempi and the enthusiasm inherent in the playing that truly sets these interpretations of Mendelssohn's string symphonies apart from the rest. In my view, this recording conveys what these symphonies should truly sound like. You can go wrong with a surprising number of Mendelssohn recordings, but definitely not with this one.

A set to acquire!.......2007-01-25

Ashkenazy is really the best soloist-conductor produced by Russia. And I must confess I rather prefer him in his last role. In this case, Ashkenazy has really filled a hole, because with some exceptions, Sawalich, Masur there have not been a distinguished set available for all who love to listen from time to time the pureness and brightness of Felix Mendelssohn.

If you want to have available a sturdy set of these Symphonies, you have come to a secure port, but always keeping in mind the Third and Fifth Symphonies in hands of Charles Munch are out of this world and simply don't admit comparison and the Fourth under Toscanini's magisterial baton.

Good Romantic Mendelssohn.......2006-07-04

Surprisingly, this Mendelssohn cycle has not yet been reviewed on Amazon! It's a collection that deserves more recognition than it gets, certainly more than some other, more widely available versions receive.

I bought this collection shortly after buying the LSO/Abbado set, which had been for me a major disappointment. Abbado's line-shaping seemed entirely an intellectual exercise, not produced from any feeling or vision of the work. Moments of "attack" lacked expression, while the emotional moments did not "sing" as the melody seems to require. The whole seemed like a technically expert but ultimately mediocre attempt.

For comparison, I also had Karajan's versions of symphonies 3 and 4 (I have unfortunately not heard his symphony no. 5). Karajan's style is "blockbuster" Romantic, whereas Ashkenazy's Romanticism is lighter and more emotionally sensitive. They are both good in their own areas - a high-point of Ashkenazy's style is heard in the opening of the 3rd symphony, in which the strings seem literally to sigh. The orchestra has a rich sound and is recorded with some depth; the musicians themselves are more than competent for the material, and Ashkenazy's particular combination of concentrated energy and sincere feeling is always attractive and usually convincing.

Of the main four symphonies in Ashkenazy's cycle, the weakest point is the last movement of the 5th symphony. First, a loud trumpet a few minutes in seems to put the whole orchestra off-balance for a few bars. More tellingly, the great fugal section is unconvincing, seemingly outside of Ashkenazy's Romantic "comfort zone". (To be honest, I have not heard a convincing performance of this section yet - suggestions are welcome!)

It is also arguable that the opening of the 4th symphony is taken too fast, if it is supposed to evoke the Italian belcanto style. (Abbado, an Italian, makes the same error.)

The Lobgesang, the least respected of Mendelssohn's symphonies, gets particularly short shrift from the engineers of this performance. The sections of the choir are often either too close or too distant, and when the tenor sings, the volume levels seem to increase across the board, indicating that these parts were recorded separately. The performances themselves are fine, but if you particularly want this work, you'll have to shop for an individual recording. The work itself, however, is rarely considered a "deal-breaker" when it comes to a Mendelssohn cycle.

The above issues aside, these are fine performances, especially if you are looking for a pure Romantic approach to Mendelssohn, without Karajanian extremes of bombast.

Markiz vs. Mendelssohn, Not Markiz for Mendelssohn, in Recorded Travesty.......2006-03-29

Anyone who loves the genuine aesthetic of the music of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and of the 19th Century must recoil in dismay upon auditioning the release by BIS Records (5482750) of all of the composer's early "string symphonies" (those that predate the standard 5 numbered symphonies)! What tormentedly misguided interpretations! These performers (Lev Markiz, leading the Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam) arouse a similar distaste that one encounters on hearing the Hanover Band's stylistically execrable and hence defective recordings of the Beethoven overtures, which takes an approach to Beethoven akin to Markiz' way of plowing through Mendelssohn.

These deluded zealots play Mendelssohn's earliest achivements at writing symphonies with a near-total absence of legato that makes no sense even in Baroque music, and of which the absence makes for sheer butchery in 19th century music, the child Mendelssohn's included. All that spiky chugging and hacking, mincingly poking and churning through this music leaves the listener appalled at the cruel pointlessness of the resulting sheer lack of musicality. Presumably, these zealots assume that all this "crisp" articulation sounds impressibly brilliant, but, really, there is no element of virtuosity that is any major component of these delectably domestic works, regarding proper emphasis in interpretation, as opposed to the youthful Mendelssohn's virtuosic skill itself in composition at the boyish age at which he produced them. Hence, the flashy and soulessly mechanistic approach of Markiz and his players, hours of it, at tempi that for the most part are so breathlessly rapid as to trivialise the music, is just plain silly and irrelevant. Markiz and his players inflict their bumptuous, graceless détaché articulation even on the slow cantabile movements, which thus suffer even more than the movements in faster tempi.

If one loves Mendelssohn, rather than acquire BIS Records' set only to endure the musical equivalent of heart-burn from the ire to which listening to this frontal assault on Mendelssohn's string symphonies gives rise, order one of the other more musically sound and sane recordings of these works that Amazon.com makes available to acquire a more truly musical set of these modest, but delectably and sweetly adorable, works, as played with real musicianship by other musicians of more informed sensibility.

Even retaining Markiz' recording after having purchased it is only for the sake of the rarely included uncompleted 13th string symphony (one movement only) and for the alternative versions (with and without winds) of no. 8 (included often enough, anyway, in the case of no. 8, on other recorded sets of these works), but those musicological considerations are the only factors which save this set from a fast act of weeding out from a discerning listener's collection. Amazon.com can serve the buyer better with another choice for this repertoire, to help its customers to live happily with Mendelssohn, properly played with respect and genuine musicianship!

This CD brings you the best works of Felix Mendelssohn. It is the usual mistake for people to think that Mendelssohn only wrote a Wedding March, when in fact it was just a piece of music for Midsummer Night's Dream. Listen to it and enjoy
