Hi.

Does anyone know what is the music from the opening titles of the movie?It is before the song Omiya starts.It is not included in the CD and i'd like to know the title.

I love the movie Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Indira Varhma and Sarita Chowdery are very, very beautiful women. And the music in the movie was hott! Especially the song at Princess Tara's wedding where everyone is dancing and Maya is serving the guests in her beautiful red sari. It had a cool beat and I felt like dancing, Indian style!

Love the movie...cinematography is wonderful, a truely beautiful movie, everything is a feast for the eyes. The soundtrack is just as good, perfect blend of exotic music that can be enjoyed lounging around or even bellydanced to.

The songs are sensual, calming, meditative and spiritual. If you appreciate different cultures, this album is for you. Whenever i play this album i turn all the lights out, and light candles, burn incense and meditate. I highly recommend this album with monsoon wedding soundtrack. Everyone i know loves this album. Get it.

Congratulations... you've just found a hidden gem.......2005-08-24

If you've dropped in here by accident STOP, because this is something special. Forget any preconceptions about "new age" music, ignore the awful cover, don't waste time listening to the samples (which are simply short excerpts from the very slow starts to each track) and believe me, if you dare, when I say that this is one of the best "ambient/chill out" albums out there.

Dwarfed by the reputation of younger brother, Mike, Terry Oldfield's music - on this CD at least - follows a much more satisfying, far less bombastic "fusion" style through the merging of haunting Indian melodies & chants with western-influenced structures and the insidious, naturally "club" orientated back-beats of the tablas. The end result? A wonderfully laid-back, cleverly produced album that simply etches itself into your memory banks and demands repeat listening. Closer to "Cafe del Mar" than beards, beads & sandals it's the soundtrack to that languidly cool journey through India you've been promising yourself... and it's a totally undiscovered gem of a record.

Jai Uttal has been heralded as a master in the realms of World and New Age music. Uttal's latest offering, Spirit Room, is a fitting tribute to his 10-year recording history with Triloka records. Moving gracefully through traditional Indian sitars, tablas, African rhythms, and modern jazz innovations, Uttal shape-shifts each musical moment into well-crafted songs. His clear, contralto vocals touch deep emotional chords, sparking an awakening of something new and promising, yet warmly familiar. The opening track, "Be with You," is an impassioned work of love and devotion, parting the way into "Guru Brahma," heady, smooth, and seductive. On "Corner," Uttal explores the shadow realm through somber acoustic guitar and sitar. The rest of Spirit Room rounds out with groove-heavy cuts such as "Footprints" and "Malkouns (Night on the Ganges)." Spirit Room.......2003-10-07

I met Jai Uttal and Geoffroy Gordon three years ago in Santa Fe during a Holotropic Breathwork retreat where we did kirtan singing and breathwork over a five day period. To me, Jai has the voice of an angle! Whenever I'm facilitating a breathwork or participating, their music touches a place in my soul that reminds me of my deepest parts of myself. I find their music mesmerizing and have been blessed to hear them up close and in a sacred setting. I love the music on Spirit Room and find that it rekindles the energy and sacred space so vital to my healing and daily practice of living life!

New music that sounds new!.......2003-03-19

Infusing a modern take into many wonderful classical indian bhajans and songs is in itself a major task. Doing it competently, and venturing sucessfully into a jazz fusion style is a great acomplishment. I did not know of the artist, until a friend told me to listen to this cd. It was a transforming experience. If you can, take an evening stroll in the closest sandy beach, and enjoy this music for a few hours. It changes your mind. Amazing experience !

This is a "best of" CD - and a nice one.......2001-07-03

... If you are a fan of Jai Uttal's, you'll really like this record. Then again if you are a fan of his, it is likely that you already have everything on this record. If on the other hand, you only kinda like him, or if you (like me) find the "concept" of Jai Uttal kinda cool (a concept that seems to me to consist of jazzy, rockin', westernized versions of "hindu" music - that is bhajans and kirtans), but feel that he has been a bit inconsistent in the fulfillment of that concept over the years - than I reckon you'd also like this record, as it pretty much takes the most successful pieces from his previous records and puts them on a single disc. That is a long winded way of saying: if you like Jai Uttal, and you ain't got his other records, get this one. Otherwise, forget it.

Is Jai's music considered a narcotic?.......2001-04-21

My wife and I met Jai Uttal and Jeffrey Gordon in Costa Rica a few weeks ago. They were there to provide live music at a retreat called Ram Dass and Friends. During the seven days, Jai and Jeffrey played a couple hours each day. Ever since returning to the U.S., we have hummed, whistled, chanted or listened to the music. I have never before been so totally enthralled by a musical style. Some will not like it, some will. I love it, but then again, turn on a radio and listen to me complain. If more stations played music like Jai Uttal, I would listen. For now I will stick to Jai's CDs and the jukebox in my head.

Spirit Room.......2000-08-28

If you like Sting's single entitled "Desert Rose", then you will enjoy this CD. In fact, Jai Uttal has been blending Indian instruments and percussion with western rock music for quite a long time.

The first song on the CD is as strong as "Desert Rose". In fact, I like it better. There are several songs in English on the CD. The majority are traditional Hindu chants set to the creative arrangements of Jai Uttal and his Love Pagan Orchestra. Some sound very tradionally Indian while others almost have a India/Smooth Jazz feel to them.

Jai Uttal is a master at fusing two musical genres thus creating an exciting, exotic and haunting new sound--but without damaging the integrity of either musical genre. This album is a retrospective of his four previous albums.

Four and a half stars -- the spirit is strong.......2002-01-15

Penguin's guide to jazz on CD correctly notes that Freeman was among the first of the avant-garde-leaning players who followed the "New Thing" wave of the '60s to fully embrace the need for tradition and structure. He was -- and remains -- fully capable of pushing the limits of his instrument , particularly on bass clarinet and tenor, but he's also a highly lyrical player and a superb interpreter of ballads. These qualities are strongly displayed in "Spirit Sensitive."

I have the original vinyl, which included six cuts, but I sprung for the CD reissue in order to get the four extra cuts, and it was worth it, particularly for two Coltrane originals Freeman performs (more on those in a minute.)

The album was recorded in 1979 when Freeman was in his 20s, so it's all the more surprising how gentle the sound on this release is, particularly if you are familiar with some of his fiery work from around this period with bassist Cecil McBee (who also appears here.) From the opening "Autumn in New York" through "You Don't Have to Say You're Sorry," "It Never Entered My Mind," "Close to You Alone" and a superb reading of Horace Silver's "Peace," Freeman renders his material with care, staying close to melody and mood rather than technical showmanship.

Freeman best shows his power on interpretations of two Coltrane tunes, "Lonnie's Lament" and "Wise One." These were two of Coltrane's most introspective compositions and Chico retains their dark colors, but on "Lonnie's Lament," he turns loose on saxophone in a way that Coltrane himself did not on the original. It's a spirited and spirit-filled performance.

John Hicks' piano is a strong plus on "Spirit Sensitive," particularly on the ballads. His lyricism matches Freeman's and he is an attentive accompanist.

The half-star deduction comes about from the drumming. Billy Hart is obviously a fine drummer, but he didn't sound to me in top form on this album. Specifically, he plays a bit "busy" on the ballads; the two-song sequence of "Close to You Alone" and "It Never Entered My Mind" features superb interplay between Freeman and Hicks, but Billy fills up a lot of the space with more work than I thought was necessary, and it gets a little intrusive. By contrast, Don Moye appears on the last two cuts and fares much better, in my opinion, with molding his sound to the rest of the band's.

Although he is a restless spirit who occasionally records a date that doesn't quite connect, Freeman has continued to turn out fine work since this date. "Spirit Sensitive" is an important document of the development of a key modern jazz player.
