If Rieu is not the most outstanding purveyor of Viennese waltzes and similar light-hearted fare, he is certainly the most popular and well-known. There are plenty of fun pieces on this album, although, to be just a tad pedantic, more of it is Italian and French than remotely Viennese. But it's all fun, and it's all well-played. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Music different from title.......2007-05-26
The title of this CD was misleading. I wanted an entire CD of Viennese waltzes to play at a party, and was disappointed that there were marches, etc. on the CD. A better title would've been "The Vienna I Love, Music From My Heart".
André Rieu - The Vienna I love - Waltzes From My Heart.......2006-07-17
The music is so upbeat and you are automatically in a good mood. It is a real pleasure listening to this CD and it is done frequently.
Excellent choice.......2006-05-03
I am really a rock music fan but I enjoy this version of light classical music. It may not be for the serious classical music enthusiast, but it is still considered excellent light entertainment. What a way to introduce classical music to a wider audience!
Pop Strauss, et al.......2004-04-30
I was looking for truly Viennese renditions of Strauss waltzes. Though unrelentingly upbeat, this isn't it. There are medleys of Strauss, Offenbach, Rossini, and everyone else imaginable. It's a pop version of what was once pop on its own. I know Strauss isn't serious classical fare, but this trivializes it.
Depressed? Listen to this!.......2002-09-25
Having one of those ho-hum days just like that little round guy on the Zoloft commercial? Place this on your CD, press start, and don't fight it! You will be dancing around the living room (provided you don't fight it, just let it go!). Musically, it is a very fine piece from a very fine artist. It can totally transport you. So many of the tunes you will know from TV commercials, (Rheingold Beer) etc. It is a solid beautiful collection of tunes that can stir the soul. I know it sounds schmaltzy, but if it can make you feel better, why not try it?

There is a lot of really enjoyable music here. I remember organizing a performance of the Fifth Piano Concerto (subtitled "The Egyptian") when I was repertoire committee chairman for a local community orchestra. We found it not only very playable for all of us amateurs in the orchestra, but it simply blew the audience away. It's a real find. Both the Second and Fourth concertos have been popular favorites for more than a century, but they seemed to have vanished sight in the past couple of decades. It was our loss, but no more. And the Fifth Piano Concerto, even when played by amateurs, can blow an audience away. At two discs for the price of one, these fine performances offer listeners a great chance to know this charming and vivacious music at little or no risk at all. So why hesitate? --David Hurwitz

five sparkling gems.......2007-02-21
Saint-Saens was the dominant French composer of the second half of the nineteenth century. And yet his works remain under-appreciated. His party piece "Carnival of the Animals" is probably his best known composition. Of his five symphonies, only the last (the "Organ" symphony, which is given the number 3) is well known, and that as a novelty crowd pleaser, rather than in recognition of the masterpiece it is. All five symphonies should be part of the standard repertoire. Of the piano concertos, the best known is the second, with the fourth somewhere behind that. But all five are glittering, assured works, full of imagination, and amongst the most thoroughly realized concertos written. They make full use of all the colours of the large romantic orchestra, and range through the pallette of emotions from exuberance to reflective sadness. This is a fine recording, the notes dropping in clear cascades of gorgeous sound. It should be part of any classical music collection.
Outstanding........2005-11-24
Having listened to other recordings, plus hearing live ones, of Concerto #2 (the most popular) for 15 years, it was nice to hear the entire pentalogy of the Saint-Saens piano concerti.
Pascal Roge may not be as big a name as Martha Argerich or
Vladimir Ashkenazy, but he certainly knows how to play the piano.
There isn't a dull moment in any of them. Roge captures all the youthful exuberance in the musically-straightforward 1st concerto. The 5th concerto (often called "The Egyptian concerto") is definitely the best of the lot. The tonal coloring is exquisite throughout, especially in the 'Nile River' 2nd movement and the boisterous finale. I could listen to it all day. The 3rd and 4th concerti are fine; these are musically less interesting than the other three. The orchestra is equally virtuosic and never oversteps its bounds, under the guidance of Dutoit. Highly recommended.
OK for the money.......2005-04-22
All in all, I think this is a fair value. Dutoit does a great job conducting and the quality of the recording is good. I was disappointed with the soloist's interpretation of concerto no 2 - I felt too much liberty was taken - esp on the opening passages. What should have been one long phrase building in intensity was instead practically broken into shorter phrases and any momentum that might have been gained was lost. I also felt like the third movement was not played at a tempo I would consider 'presto'.
I liked concerto no 1 very much - these concertos should not be ignored even if some critics do not consider Saint Saens a 'heavyweight' composer.
You'll like this set even if you don't like Saint-Saens.......2004-05-06
Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I am one of those who consider Saint-Saens to be a hopeless musical lightweight, a first-rate second-rate composer (as the old saw goes), a musician of prodigious technical talent but lacking any real depth in his music. It isn't any accident that, despite the tremendous popularity of his music during his lifetime, only about 2 dozen (and that is probably being generous) of his many many pieces are performed with any consistency.
Not coincidentally, some of Saint-Saens' pieces that have shown staying power are at least a couple of the piano concerti, and they are impeccably presented here by Roge & Dutoit. All in all, they are pretty musical confections of a decidedly classical strain, certainly not wallowing in the late romanticism that was running rampant at the time they were composed. If you are lukewarm about Saint-Saens, this is a collection that will plead his case for you about as well as anything to be found these days. Also, it is nice and cheap --- that certainly does not detract from its desirability. Enjoy.
Trust us.......2003-03-02
Looking at the other reviews here, I can only nod in complete agreement. Saint-Saëns is an underrated composer and these 5 concertos are joyful, seductive and deserving of a lot more attention than they have received. Saint-Saëns, like Mendelssohn, had the ability to instantly inspire happiness in the listener, this listener anyhow. Yes, the 2nd and 4th occasionally do get an airing, but the "Eqyptian" (the 5th) is every bit their equal and the remaining two concertos certainly have their own merits. The five deserve a double disc outing like this.
The performances here are very, very fine indeed. I have not heard the Collard/Previn versions (which are referred to in another review), although I have several versions of the 2nd and 4th. Charles Dutoit and Pascal Roge do a wonderful job, investing these performances with the affection and conviction they deserve. True, there is more of the virtuoso than the philosopher about Roge's playing, but that is entirely appropriate to Saint-Saëns. This is feel-good music (and music-making) of the very highest callibre.
Returning to these discs is always a pleasure for me and I hope will be for you. If you have even a passing interest in late Romantic piano concertos treat yourself to these.

A very good collection of moving compositions........2007-05-07
We heard the Piano Concerto No. 5 in F on National Public Radio and decided that we must have this piece of music in our CD collection. We selected this CD since the two CDs allowed us to purchase all 5 of Camille Saint-Saens' Piano Concertos. This CD has become one of our favorites and we play it often, discovering more interest in the work of Saint-Saens with each playing.
Camille Saint-Saens' sense of drama, his lyric runs, his ability to evoke mystery, all make this listening experience highly recommended. I am fascinated by the way Saint-Saens creates rich variations of his themes as he takes us from movement to movement. Saint-Saens has the ability to develop ethereal melodies and variations on themes that are hypnotic and mystical. His piano runs are pushed for dramatic effect. The creative and amusing variations of his themes are pleasant and amusing.
This CD is highly recommended. In addition to the 5 Piano Concertos, Saint-Saens' Wedding Cake Caprice and the Africa Fantaisie are included. I found Jean-Phillippe Collard's interpretation to be masterful and rich, capturing the vast complexity and variation that Saint-Saens created in his compositions.
Nothing but the Best.......2007-04-01
To the other reviewer, you are a fool to give these CDs anything less than 5 stars, and you should be banished to hearing Fur Elise permanently until you repent of your ways. As a classical piano composer and teacher, I am definetely spoiled with piano music, it's true. But this is a real gem, TRUE ART, where even a metronome is rendered petty and useless to this, thank you very, very, much. Saint-Saen's 5 Piano Concertos, and David Helfgott's performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto IS as good as it gets. This is art with a soul, their is no hidden agenda, no undercurrent to this music. This recording is fine, don't listen to the other reviewer. I would give it 10 stars if I had the option. Much of these 2 CDs is compltely unique in the realm of piano music. The 2nd Mov. of the 5th Concerto is unforgettable, just to name one. Go ahead and get this one, if you don't, you are sinning, right now.
Buy it for all the five concerti, just don't expect much from the second concerto.......2006-06-01
There are two albums of Saint-Saens' complete piano concerti available in the Amazon catalogue. This from EMI classics, and one from Decca. With two extra tracks thrown in (the "Wedding Cake" waltz, Opus 76, and "Africa Fantaisie," opus 89), this is the better bargain. Plus it's cheaper. I highly recommend it for these reasons, especially if your only interest is familiarization with all of Saint-Saens' five piano concertos, as was mine. Whether the Charles Dutoit performance is better, I can't say as I don't own it.
As for the performances in this disc:
My interest in Saint-Saens' piano concertos was fired up when I first heard his 2nd Piano Concerto performed by Cecile Licad. That stupendous performance (yes, I considered that adjective very carefully and find it absolutely appropriate) was also conducted by Andre Previn and accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (another Brit orchestra). That recording is also available in Amazon catalogue. Do buy it if you are a connoisseur of Saint Saens' second piano concerto. It is a definitive performance, one that am sure even Saint-Saens would approve of VERY enthusiastically. Just listen to the cadenza of the first movement in the Music Sampler and hear for yourselves.
Now back to this album. As noted earlier, it is also conducted by Andre Previn. But what a difference a pianist makes. I refer here to the performance of the second piano concerto. I skip it, actually. Having been spoiled--blissfully, ecstatically--by the Licad stunner, I cannot bear the stultifying interpretation in this one. I just listen to the other piano concertos and enjoy them. These piano concertos are excitingly atmospheric, with the composer's unmistakable mix of boister and mystery. As noted from an Amazon review of the Decca album, a recording of all of Saint Saent's five piano concerti is rare enough. So for that reason and the cheap price, this album is a good buy. I just try not wonder how other pianists, like Licad for instance, would play them. I just enjoy Saint Saent's piano music, The other performances are still very enjoyable, excluding other considerations. After I received this album from my sister as her Amazon gift, I now know that Saint Saen's piano concertos really rock!!! They are for me.
For the price and the extra tracks I'd give this album four stars. But for its dismal second piano concerto (cringe, cringe), three stars.

Customer Reviews:
Ancient Egypt: Sherri's Opinion.......2007-04-11
I haven't been able to get enough of this music lately. It's lovely, evocative, and perfect background for serious reading or thinking. The music was written as background for the Seattle Art Museum Tutankhamun Exhibit and must have inspired those viewing the exhibit to think seriously about the meaning of the art they saw, the meaning of the young king's life, and perhaps the meaning of their own. Jihad Racy is highly skilled and probably promotes intercultural understanding with his music. It's fun to listen to the old and/or traditional instruments. Perhaps ancient Egyptian music was not truly like this music, but for the sake of the Egyptians, I hope it was.
good mood music.......2006-11-12
after seeing the tut exhibit, i had found the background music almost hypnotic. it added greatly to the images before me. i thought this would be pleasant to listen to at home. unfortunately, ancient styled egyptian music is hard to find. in some places even this cd has a more modernized, or slightly moroccan sound to it. yet, overall it's one of the better i've found so far. don't expect 8 pieces of music that are greatly varied in style and delivery. the variances are small, but the somewhat repetitiousness of sound adds to it's relaxation value. it can easily be used as a background music that puts you at ease, but doesn't distract you from your point of focus.
First time listener.......2006-06-30
As the first CD I've bought with "Ancient Music" on it I was impressed, but since I've heard other CD's of music from Egypt and Greece, I found this one more orchestrated. Not that that takes away from it's listening pleasure but the others gave me more of a feel of the Ancient times the music is supposed to represent. It is made to represent ancient music while some of the others are based on actual written music (or so they say) that had been found on scrolls. All in all it was an excellent way to begin my journey into the past.
Beautiful!.......2003-09-08
I'm not an expert on Egyptian music or Middle Eastern music so I can't attest to its authenticity, but nonetheless the cd is absolutely beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! I'm addicted to the soothing sounds! If your aim is relaxation and/or inspiration, this is an incredible collection! I love the fact that it calls to mind music from so many cultures - Native American, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc. - and I can't help but feel that perhaps Ancient Egyptian music would have been one of the predecessors of many of these musical cultures! So, why shouldn't it sound a bit like all of them?
An interpretation of Ancient Egypt.......2003-06-27
From the Album cover the names of the various tunes it is designed to represent ancient Egypt. Also one needs to take in consideration that this musical tribute to ancient Egypt was originally composed in 1978 for the King Tutankhamen Exhibit at the Seattle art Museum and Played continuously during the exhibit. Only traditional Near Eastern interments were used and their acoustical capabilities are explored and expanded in this work.
IF there seams to be a resemblance to middle eastern music that may be because Ali Jihad Racy also has also recorded such on other Lyricord albums.
This is very enjoyable and worth the price.

RECENT ARABIC POP MUSIC.......2006-05-20
Some ARABIC POP MUSIC Angham, Babihik Washteeny (2005). Amr Diab, Kammel Kalamak (2005). Marwan Khoury, Asr El Sho' (2005). Ahlam, Al Thokol Sanaa (2005. Muhammad Abdu, Al'amaken (Jeddah ghair 2005)
What I know about Arabic pop music can be put in a thimble with room left over for my thumb, but I listened to it regularly when we lived in Dubai from 2001-4 and grew to like it quite a bit. So this spring, when we visited Dubai, I picked up some more pop records. Well, four are pop records; the other (Abdu) lies somewhere between traditional (incantatory) music and pop music.
Angham, Diab and perhaps Ahlam are from Egypt. Khoury (and perhaps Ahlam) is from Lebanon; Abdu is a Saudi (Saudi Arabia). Angham, Diab, Ahlam and Khoury represent the liberal pop wing of Gulf music. There are echoes of western lounge music in all four disks. Khoury, in particular, comes across as the Middle Eastern version of someone like Neil Diamond: rich voice cushioned in lush orchestration (strings, woodwinds, rhythm). Sentiment drips from each note he sings. Listening to individual songs, especially a cut like "Helwi El Hayat," is fine but listening to the album in one dose is like eating a dozen puff pastries in one sitting. But ... hey, give the guy credit! He can emote. (C+)
From the evidence of the cover photo, Ahlam is a hot young babe -with pouty lips, kohl-rimmed eyes, faintly puffy cheeks. "Veree sexee!" as they say. Her singing isn't bad and the rhythms pulse, but the orchestration is thin and the musical content modest. (C)
Amr Diab has a nice voice which conveys not only emotion but urgency. The arrangements on this fine album move along at a good pace and the album is well orchestrated -guitar dominates but there are nice passages for organ, the somewhat Arabicized electronic rhythm section kicks, and the backup vocals don't get in the way. The songs are interesting enough to bear repeated listenings. The title cut, "Kammel Kalamak," is a standout, as is the more relaxed, loping tempo "Agheeb," on which Diab shows that he can sing. Diab is more than a pretty face. (B)
Angham is the gem of the lot. An earlier album of hers, Leih Sebtaha (2004), was superior. This album, Bahibik Washteeny, isn't quite as good but it is still clearly superior pop music. She too is a hot babe but more than that, she is a diva with a real voice: insinuating, strong, appealing. Arabic singers differ from western singers in the use of grace notes; they frequently sing a quarter tone above or below the melody line. When someone like Angham sings a ballad, her smoky voice wavers on, around, and below the melody line. It is very effective when you have a voice as good as she has. If Leih Sebtaha is a 5* album, Bahibik Washteeny is a 4-1/2* one.
A word about Arabic pop instrumentation and rhythms. For all they borrow from MTV and the international music market, there is something unique about this music. In the richest scores, like those on Angham's albums, string and woodwind sections play mostly in unison or octaves, not in more complex harmonies. The effect is hypnotic; the massed sound of unison and octave strings DRIVES the music. Arabic rhythms, even with the use of drum machines, are different than western rhythms. Instead of 1 -2 -3 -4, they lope and canter, place accents behind or ahead of the beat, or add second and third drum beats providing counters to the straightforward rhythm we expect to hear in this kind of lounge music.
If the model of western straightforward rhythm is the ball bearing rhythm section of the Count Basie band ca. 1940, the model of Arabic pop music is the camel's gait.
Muhammad Abdu is sui generis. Al'amakeen is a live album, recorded in Jedda in 2005. The rhythm section backing him is the equal of any rhythm section I've heard on Afro-Cuban records: insistent, driving, and complex. The strings and woodwinds are thin but they fit this music. Abdu has a nasal tenor voice and he chants as much as sings, but hey, it works! This is incantatory music, building strength through repetition of notes and phrases, driven by the reedy sounding string section and horns and propelled along the tracks by a kickass rhythm section. I wish I knew more about this music: I suspect it's not pop music at all but rather religious or semi-religious in nature. Whatever it is, it's good! (5*)
Egyptian Pop for the World.......2005-08-02
I bought this album because five years ago I spent four months in Cairo, Egypt, and every time I got into a taxi, there was a 50/50 chance that I would hear "Amarain." It was a catchy song, and got stuck in my head, despite the fact that I only understood one word out of every five. I decided to buy the album titled "Amarain" to check out the rest of Amr Diab's music. I fell in love with "Ana," which was also a single off of the album. "Ana" combines the Egyptian pop sound with Latino rhythms and a vaguely techno riff. It also has call-and-response and a driving beat. All in all, a great song. The rest of the album was very listenable too. So, I came back to the US, and lost the tape, much to my chagrin. This year, I was wandering around Amazon.com, and found the greatest hits. It had "Amarain" and "Ana" on it, so I decided to get it. Nearly every song is very good, and all are good. A few have a pre-packaged "Listen to this unspecific world music while selling cars or 'ethnic' food" feel, but they're still catchy. My husband, who only understands five (or so) words of Arabic, enjoys the insistent beat of Amr Diab. You can chill to it, you can dance to it, you can attempt to read the rather badly translated English lyrics, or you can just put it on in the car and drive to it.
Bravo!.......2005-06-11
Bravo, Amr Diab! You are truly an outstanding singer! Music lovers, buy this CD you will not regret.
you know you want him.......2004-07-05
If you enjoy Arabic music or have some rhythm, you probably own this CD already. Amr Diab has a beautiful voice and a wide range of talent. The songs are just the right tempo and I can listen to the CD the whole way through without jumping for the remote (and how many CDs can you say that about?). Whether you speak Arabic or not,its easy to appricate his talent. No wonder he's so loved in Egypt.
Standout songs: kalby ekhtarak, amarain, nour el ain, el alem alla, bahibak aktar, habibi
I AM IN LOVE WITH AMR DIAB.......2003-06-10
Amr Diab has to be the best Arabic singer out there. Not only is he undeniably hot but his music is good enough to make you weak in the knees. Tamally Maak has to be my favorite out of all his songs. The deep, emotional melody just pulls at my heart and it's amazing how the music just makes you FEEL. Along with Tamally Maak, my favorites happen to be Alem Alla and Akther Wahed and of course, Habibi!

Customer Reviews:
Solid Basic March Collection.......2006-08-07
Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!
Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest.......2004-08-14
I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.
The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.
There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.
Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.
40 Famous Marches - a great collection!!.......2003-11-21
This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....
Classics on Parade.......2003-05-01
If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.
A great collection of marches by classical and popular music "masters".
Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17
A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.
The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)
BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.
Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.

We have this on wax, and had been looking for it on cd to enjoy in the car. Great beats, and old school rap style...if that's what you like, then get this cd. It will set a party off.
Incredibly slammin!.......2005-02-02
Rodney O and Joe Cooley are THA freshness, no question. "Everlasting Bass" is one of the illest rap songs ever done. If u dont buy this cd, at least download "Everylasting Bass" & while your at it get "Cooley High." So original, and so unbelievable these guys pack heat with massive base action. This is what rap is all about right here! Put down your Chingy, 50cent/G-unit, J-kwon, Cassidy, Cam'ron/Dipset, Nelly/St. lunatics, and Fabolous cd's. That music is just party junk! Rodney O and Joe Cooley touch your inner cool & give u the chills wishing u were in the old skool era. Im tellin' it like it is, this stuff is pure dominance. Also CHECK OUT (must listen to) Afrika Bambaataa's - "Looking For the Perfect Beat", and "Planet Rock", and Planet Patrol's "Play at Your Own Risk". Those tracks are hip hop gems & Rodney O and Joe Cooley represent what the 80's dynasty of rap is all about.

I got my first taste of Rodney O and Joe Cooley way back in like 97, and no matter how many times i listen to their music i never get bored! I was so lucky to see them in concert in Phoenix as well, what a show!! This first CD of theirs here is their best as far as im concerned, if you are a true rap/hip hop listener you will not be sorry you bought this at all!
You can't get enough of everlasting bass.......2003-10-25
This album rocks, no question about it, and you will probably be the only person in your town that has it. A true classic.
I saw these guys in concert at Mammoth in Denver in 1989, they opened for Public Enemy, and they were awesome, especially Joe Cooley's cuts.
You know you've made it when MC Twist dubs your song.
Remember: No one comes close to the General! BUY THIS YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!

This album is based on a challenging idea: Try to recreate a musical form from a culture and period that left behind no recordings or musical notation, using only history, a description of the instruments, and some historical artifacts. It takes intuition as much as scholarship and craftsmanship to recreate the ancient instruments of Egypt--from simple percussion and flutes to boat-shaped and triangular harps and trumpets. Atherton, with his musicians and singers, exhibits both innovation and skill, offering not so much a look at how the music actually was, but more an intuitive guess at how it might have been, keeping the music first and history a close but well-heeled second. It can be frantic one moment and somber the next, as each of these lengthy song suites develops organically around a song or a piece of poetry--offering both early music and improvisational music aficionados something unique. Excellent recording quality is augmented by well-documented notes on history and instrumental research. --Louis Gibson
Album Description
The catalyst for Ankh: The Sound of Ancient Egypt was an exhibition - Life and Death in the Land of the Pharaohs, developed by the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, The Netherlands. The exhibition came to the Australian Museum in 1998. It provided the challenge of producing a creative reconstruction of ancient Egyptian music and the inspiration for a longer term research project.
The first stage of the project began with a response to the contents of the exhibition itself, followed by a delving into the ever-increasing output of Egyptological scholarship, to establish a broader musical context. The big questions loomed large: what did the music sound like? How were the instruments tuned? Was the music polyphonic? One must proceed by conjecture and deduction, using the literary and visual record in conjunction with an examination of surviving instruments. The answers remain elusive, mainly gleaned from instruments housed in museums, along with iconographic and literary evidence. There is no surviving music notation, nor any musical theory which might instruct one about pitch, rhythm and timbre.
In approaching the composition and performance of the music,
Michael Atherton drew on his experience in playing medieval monophony, eastern European and Turkish folk music, as well as his participation in intercultural music projects.
Atherton primarily uses 5, 6, and 7 note scales based on specific pitches, resulting in a combination of Moroccan ramal mai mode and Persian afshari. He also gravitates toward pentatonic scales and major modes. The melodies move in small steps. The setting of the hymns is monophonic, with the inclusion of call and response development. Sung items include interpolated recitations, as a means of acknowledging a deep connection between language and music.
Ankh: The Sound of Ancient Egypt is a contribution to giving a voice to the vivid images of a dynamic musical culture.
Customer Reviews:
Effective In Part -- Not Quite Enough Parts.......2001-07-16
Atherton starts with a splendid idea and certainly enough talent to carry his idea off. Despite some fine moments in a couple of the vocal selections, the rest is very forgettable. Having done his bit for research, Atherton seems to succumb to the temptation to ride the CD out using a lot of faux-Near Eastern musical riffs that simply get tedious. Adding to what others have already said, I also wonder if the ancient Egyptians had such a paltry knowledge of musical form. This recording might have worked as an evocation of dockside bar music, New Kingdom, but that's about it. The vocal areas, unlikely as they seem, get the CD three stars. For too-brief but still shining moments, Egypt is evoked pretty well. Pity the rest was so blah.
the sound of ancient egypt.......2001-04-13
as you can see i didn't like this cd. i am very interested in ancient egypt. i didn't like this cd because it was filled with mostly flutes and soft drums. there is hardly any singing and the singing sounds more like music from my church. and of the 18 tracks 13 of them are instrumental. i found this cd to be a waist of my money and i believe it will be for you as well.
Could Have Been Done Better.......2000-06-10
Michael Atherton's "Ankh" is a good showcasing of the instruments of the ancient world - however the vocals leave alot to be desired. Although he uses "ancient Egyptian" words in the spoken chants and singing in some of the songs, his choice of vocalists is incorrect for the subject matter. In short they sound far too "Western". The vocalists were far better suited to hymns with the Sunday Choir in a cathedral than in the columned halls of Ancient Egypt. Had Atherton used vocalists with a touch more passion and ethnicity, along the lines for example of Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance(Soundtrack for Gladiator) or Azam Ali ofthe group Vas, this album would have worked.
Not much melody........2000-06-07
It seems unthinkable that the ancient Egyptians had NO concept of using pleasurable patterns of sound to create melody. This CD, however, seems to argue that notion. Few patterns emerge... it seems more often that one completely random note is followed by another and another.
Definately a very different CD, notable perhaps for its novelty, but not much more.
Overall Very Excellent!.......2000-02-14
Michael Atherton did an excellent job re-creating the music of Ancient Egypt or what it might have sounded like in antiquity. A very relaxing CD oveerall.
The only shortcomming was the female vocals. The singers, though good, sounded far too much like the Nuns of St. Hildegard of Bingen rather than more middle eastern sounding vocals. Had Atherton used vocalists similar to Azam Ali of Vas, or even from India or Egypt then this CD would have been absolutely perfect.
Very well done otherwise.

too much sax.......2007-04-25
I was disappointed by this CD - I found it very repetitive and the constant saxaphone grew to be more than irritating. I kept waiting to hear something other than beladi, but it never really developed any further than some quite nice beladi - it just never really got going. Good for practising beladi, that's all.
Outstanding, and the Real Thing.......2006-07-08
I have danced for 30 years, and am always in search of new authentic music. This set of recordings is outstanding. All pieces but the last are instrumental only, and quite dignified. All are danceable, and all tracks are long enough (5-12 minutes) to dance something substantial. There is no compromising of Arabic musical tradition here, no kitsch, and no infestation of Western musical devices or mannerisms. If you perform or dance for your own pleasure, or just listen, you will want this recording.
The music clips are not helpful.......2004-03-27
I am positive that this CD has more potential but if the sound clips are just about the beginning Taksim rhythm, then it's bad. I need to here more than just taksim, I need the beat.
WOW!.......2003-05-13
I've been belly dancing for years and I haven't seen anything like it!!!!
This album is a must buy for every belly dancer. The album is both energetic and calm, and makes you wanna belly dance.
Believe me, even if you don't know nothing about belly dancing you'll like this album.
The sounds are really exotic and sexy, in my opinion, and everyone will notice you while you belly dance... including your husband/boyfriend.
A must buy or a must burn!
Absolutelly Wonderful!.......2002-11-19
If you are looking for the slow and sensual music that seems to float like smoke on water then this is the CD for you! Almost every track starts with slow and mysterious beginning and goes through ranges of fast and intermediate paces with drums and other instruments. This is the only CD of its kind that I found (and I went through about 20 of them), definitelly do not miss it!

Beautiful and Transporting Trance Ambient Music.......2007-05-04
This is beautiful ambient trance music, dont agree at all with the reviewer from Peking, China.
I use this as background music for healing therapies and people love it.
Not just for mystics or muslims.1961
The Inessential Is Stripped Away.......2007-04-10
In our culture, which is so overloaded with junk noise, we have forgotten how much emotion the unaccompanied human voice can convey. Everything inessential is stripped away on this CD; there's a lot of silence on it, thank God, which leaves room for us to experience the power of these voices. The first track alone is worth twice the price.
Definitely not for New Age ambiance seekers.......2003-11-13
This is very austere Muslim chant. Unless you really appreciate such singing, refrain from buying this cd. I think only deep faith could make it bearable for Western ears.
Intense and full of rapture for all ages.......2002-12-31
It is relatively easy for adults to have an appreciation for this form of dhikr(remembrance); what is interesting is that since receiving it, the melodies within this CD were so enchanting that my 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter have been sneaking it away to their room to listen to it on their own. An incredible experience, really, because obviously even children can recognize when people make incantations that are honest and from within one's soul.
Excellence is a virtue.......2001-05-27
This is an excellent CD. The highest production values were maintained throughout. From the adhan to the end of the CD, I was enthralled. The reciter is obviously well trained and inspired. This CD has absolutely no weaknesses. Everyone interested in the traditions of Islamic mysticism will be thrilled to own this recording.
