Dreadful.......2004-12-23
Just attempting to listen to this massively dreadful excuse for music makes my head hurt. Since I am equipped with two working ears and human hearing I am amazed that anyone could sit through it.
The genesis of the Impromptu.......2004-11-21
If you do not yet know the music of Vorisek, it is worth getting to know. Most well-educated musicians likely have heard of Vorisek, as he is the first known composer to write piano pieces with this title (in 1822). Both Schubert & Beethoven were reasonably familiar with Vorisek (both as a composer & a conducter), and Schubert would shortly take the Impromptu form to new artistic heights.
Vorisek probably would be better known --- he certainly had the musical talent to have been a great composer --- had he not been killed by tuberculosis at age 34. Because he was not a youthful genius like Mozart & Schubert, his musical output is considerably smaller & represents an artist on his way to maturity. As it is, his single Symphony & his Impromptus give us hints of what have been had he lived.
The Symphony is well-performed here by the Westdeutsche Sinfonia, an ensemble of which I must confess I have never heard. Its conducter, Dirk Joeres, is the pianist on the Impromptus and gives an decent if not particularly riveting interpretation. I have a recording of a couple of the Impromptus performed by the stellar Czech pianist Antonin Kubalek, and Joeres does not approach the Kubalek's interpretive depth. However, to my knowledge Kubalek has not recorded the complete set of Impromptus, so Joeres' is the best recording of the set of which I know.
