The Beethoven Triple Concerto is a strange work, with the most important---or at least prominent---solos given to the cello; it is the instrument which introduces each movement. The remarkable Martha Argerich wisely allows Mischa Maisky to shine in his solos and leading position, but her contribution is anything but back seat. Her customary virtuosity is everywhere in evidence, and, in a way, she turns the piano into the spinal column of the work, with the violin and cello playing around her. Every time Maisky is about to lapse into a mannerism which might detract---too much sliding, a dynamic slightly exaggerated---Argerich brings him back, and both of them play with handsome tone. Capucon's violin is recorded a bit stridently (this was taped live in Lugano), but his playing is equally stunning. Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky leads the orchestra matter-of-factly until the final movement, when he catches the proper fire. In the Schumann A minor concerto Argerich is wonderful the solo passages and a fine partner in orchestrated ones and she really makes much of both the lyrical runs and the dance-like passages in the last movement. This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

EMI has been giving us a full report of how Martha Argerich spends her summers, espcially when it comes to the Lugano Festival. In this Beethoven Triple Concerto we get a vigorous, sunny performance that is at odds with Argerich's fiery reputation. The conductor is not an equal partner to three great soloists like Argerich, Maisky and Capucon--perhpas that's why they sound a little uninvolved. Or it could be that Capucon's small, elegant tone guided the trio into a more refined style. Anyway, they all play lovingly, so it's an engaging performance.

Argerrich's first entry in the Schumann concerto comes from another world. Even though it's the same conductor and orchestra, she takes charge. I remember her stuido recording of this work on Teldec with Harnoncourt as brash and impetuous. NOt so here: she is energetic but in a sunnier, more relaxed mood. For once the work doesn't seem too brooding, and one can sit back and appreciate Argerich's many lyrical touches. Of course, when passion is required, she can turn it on with lightning speed. All in all, I'd call this a great performance. Five stars.

Wonderful Beethoven.......2006-01-21

The Triple Concerto is often referred to as being a "strange" work. I once held this view, also. Listening to this performance dispels any such feelings. This is a passionate, exuberant performance from soloists who obviously enjoyed making this music. The finale is so vivacious and "life-affirming" that it makes you cherish the work as one of Beethoven's greatest. Which it surely is! We should get past the view - perhaps engendered by performers in the past who never really understood it and didn't relish its collaborative solo roles - that this is a strange or somehow sub-par work.

For me, Argerich is the star here. She audibly reigns in Maisky's tendency to become indulgent at times. But all three soloists play with fire, conviction and a real sense of enjoyment.

The famous Richter, Oistrakh, Rostropovich recording has usually been seen as the benchmark for this concerto, but, as fine as it is, I've always found it a little heavy-handed. I much prefer the more "bon vivant" approach taken by Argerich & Co. in the present performance.

The Schumann is wonderful too. It's not too disimilar to Argerich's approach in her studio recording with Harnoncourt.

While the orchestra and conductor are not the stars here, they do a fine job. Personally, I had no problem with their contribution in the Beethoven.

I generally enjoy the Beehthoven "triple" concerto and am no fan of the Schumann but I'd say the assorted group here has strong feelings for both of them and they project those feelings through this CD. The notes say this is Martha Argerich's first recording of the Beethoven.

Without going into detail on either concerto, I would say the benchmark for these recordings is passion. The soloists in each case work with conductor Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky -- who was a collaborator with Argerich in a previous CD of Mozart piano recordings -- to produce a performance that is higher on passion and verve than on orchestral or solo detail.

I think this works better in the romantic Schumann concerto than in the Beethoven, which was the conductor's exercise between the "Eroica" symphony and "Appasoionata" sonata. Argerich exhibits her trademark passion and big tone in both recordings. Her solo partners in the Beethoven all acquit themselves well, although I would second that the overall approach is too meaty for such modest material.

The recordings were made in concert at the Lugano Festival in 2003, which probably owes to their passionate approach. The recording itself is fine with adequate depth of sound stage and definition of the principals to satisfy most listeners. There is about a minute of applause at the end of the third and sixth tracks that indicates the audience enjoyed these performances.

A Rare Gift.......2005-01-27

A find if there ever was one. This recording (opposing the reviewer above) demonstrates the very essence of music. In the Triple Concerto the soloists blend unlike any I've heard before. With it's live recording, the energy is at such a high level it leaves one breathless throughout much of the soloists' phrasing (specifically Argerich). The orchestra, too, has an energy unheard in many American orchestras (or European for that matter). Comparing this to the Rostropovich/Oistrakh/Richter recording is not possible. There is a delicacy throughout the piece's power that the R/O/R recording could not achieve.
The energy of the orchestra and the compatability of the soloists makes this one of the most cherished recordings in my colection.

This is a rare recording that makes one wonder why the world of classical music is diminishing.
