Richard Coeur de Lion (Richard the Lionheart): Troubadours & Trouvères in the Courts of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, Marie de Champagne & Geoffroy, Duke of Brittany - Alla Francesca
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This award-winning disc deserves credit not only for its excellent performances, but also for its success in creating atmosphere. From the disc's first sounds--cittern, flute, and harp--we know we've left the 20th century far behind and we've entered a mysterious and fascinating place. The place is the world of the 12th century, the time of the Crusades and of the exploits of Richard the Lion-Hearted, duke of Aquitaine, and king of England. The songs are about courtly love, longing for lovers left behind, and, in one remarkable song by Richard himself, about the despair and desolation he experienced as a prisoner. There also is a long, impassioned song in which the singer expresses his undying devotion: "Never will my heart leave you as long as I live." Songs are performed by a variety of first-rate singers, and are interspersed with lively instrumental selections. --David Vernier

This one'll get ya going........2007-05-19
For early music people, this is another great compilation of stuff you just like to put on in the background while doing your daily routine. Good times.
TIME TRAVEL.......2006-08-15
LIKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME. FROM THE FIRST NOTES, I WAS TRANSPORTED.
Interesting variety.......2006-03-28
One of the problems I have with many early music CDs is an emphasis on one place in a time period. This reissue manages to avoid that flaw by including minnesinger, troubador, trouvere, and instrumental pieces, though the liner notes could easily have told us which of the pieces were troubador, and which trouvere, instead of just the tantalizing "two are troubador (written in langue d'oc)" without identifying which.
As a sampler, it is excellent, though the vocal pieces tend to be somewhat slow--not all the lyrics seem consistent with that delivery, so this is probably an artist's choice. It would be interesting to hear the same pieces performed now, 30 years later, with 30 years of new scholarship. Ah well, nothing is perfect!
A trip through history.......2005-09-29
The time of the Crusades spanned several centuries, from the time Pope Urban II called upon Christendom to fight for Jerusalem until the thirteenth century (this does not include the numerous minor, unnumbered crusades, sometimes against other Christians). The Crusades became for many in the Middle Ages a romantic ideal; the appeal for those who would join the Crusades was two-fold, both riches in this world and salvation in the next.
In this collection, the texts of the songs are primarily contemporary with the Crusades, although a few come from later troubadour and folk songs. Some songs here directly relate to the Crusades in content (for example, Pax in nomine Domini!), whereas others are songs contemporary with and popular among the Crusaders, but have no direct relation to the Crusades. 'Ja nus hons pris' is one such song, which has origins attributed to one of the most famous of the Crusaders, Richard the Lionhearted.
One of the problems with music from this time period is that very little written material exists. What music notation there is often is reminiscent of Gregorian chant - there are markers for pitch, but nothing for rhythmic values, melodies, etc. Similarly, the types of instruments are often not listed for particular songs, so it becomes educated guesswork as to the instruments used - lutes, rebec, wind instruments, percussion, etc.
The performances here are wonderful and full. The Early Music Consort of London recorded this first for vinyl in 1970; this CD is a reissue, well engineered. David Munrow was the director as well as performer on recorder, fluet, shawm, crumhorn and bagpipes. Munrow's talents are well suited to this kind of medieval music. Among the other performers are soprano Christina Clarke, counter tenors James Bowman and Charles Brett, tenor Nigel Rogers and baritone Geoffrey Shaw. Musicians include Eleanor Sloan on treble rebec, Oliver Brookes on bass rebec, James Tyler on lute and citole, Gillian Reid on the bells, Christopher Hogwood on harp, organ, nakers and tabor, and James Blades on nakers and tabor.
This recording is superb, a great addition to an early music library, and a joy to have as a CD - I had the vinyl of this, but over time it warped in storage, and I was very sad to have lost such a brilliant collection of music. Here it is again, restored and full of power and life.
Overrated.......2005-03-03
Note that I am a harsh reviewer, especially for music... but there are a lot of problems with this CD and there are better other there.
It is certainly interesting music and it does have historical value, but it is by no means unique.
Here are my criticisms:
1)
All of the 19 tracks are short. They range from 1-4 minutes with an average of around 2 1/2 minutes per track.
2)
This wouldn't be all that bad, except that none of those 19 tracks really stood out. They are all slow-paced and generic with little feeling of variety. Essentially, despite being a fan of the genre, I just couldn't get 'into' any of the music. It was not at all inspiring.
3)
One of my favorite things about medieval/renaissance music is the excellent balance and combination of voice talent and instruments.
This CD did not come through at all in that area, however.
The majority of this CD was the mellow, slow-paced singing that many people associate with the genre.
However, whenever the singers got going, the relatively few instruments all disappeared entirely, leaving you with just the singers (who weren't powerful enough to carry the show alone).
If you are a fan of the genre, then you might want to add this to your collection just because it isn't very expensive.
However, if you are merely interested in trying out the archaic music genre, then I defintely would recommend:
"Sinners & Saints - The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection"
*instead* of this one.
I gave Sinners & Saints a 5/5 - It was the CD that this one should've been.

Fantastic!.......2006-11-04
Probably the best troubadour/trouvere disc that I've heard. Stirring vocal work and authentic instrumentation invoke the spirit of the 12th & 13th centuries perfectly. Includes a great rendition of King Richard's 'Prison Song', as well as 'Redit etas aurea', a song that I've read the text of before (the lyrics are great-very representative of the 12th century mindset) but never heard performed. I didn't know that any notation of it had survived. Definitely recommended for fans of early music, but so well done that anyone looking for something new and interesting to listen to would probably enjoy it.
Richard the Lionheart Prison Blues.......2005-12-18
Alla Francesca extemely great, lively and emotionally re-creates and performes two songs tied with Richard the Lionheart. First of them by Richard himself, "Ja nuns hons pris" ("No Prisoner Will Ever Speak His Mind Fully..."), written while he was imprisoned in Austria on the way back from Palestine. Really sad and beautiful song. And the second - song by Gauselm Faidit dedicated to the death of Richard. The other songs and instrumentals are also from the time of the Crusades.
The music performed here in more interesting and emotional way than on the famous old disc by David Munrow "Music of the Crusades". According to my experience, this music usually charms and impresses the listeners who never before heard medieval music.
P.S. If the music of the Crusades epoch is interesting for you - there is CD released in Germany - full version (30:48) of famous song by Walther von der Vogelweide "Palastinalied" (Song of Palestine) written in the 1220s and performed by 20 German authetic, folk, prog rock, Gothic and electronic music bands as single concept piece of music (produced by Markus Van Langen). Though it is not authentic record, still it sounds very lively and original and helps to feel the spirit of that epoch. Search the Web for site of label Emmuty Records.

Customer Reviews:
A rococo bargain.......2003-04-01
Gretry's "Richard Coeur De Lion" (1784), a rousing tale about the rescue of the crusader king Richard the Lionheart by his faithful troubadour Blondel, is a minor masterpiece, the greatest French opera comique of the Ancien Regime. Gretry wasn't an eighteenth century composer of the calibre of Mozart, Rameau or his contemporary Gluck, but his music seduced audiences with its charm and tunefulness and in this opera he provided a great deal more. Blondel's stirring aria of loyalty to his king, "O Richard, oh mon roi", was so powerful it was used as an anthem by the royalists in the 1790s and promptly banned by the revolutionary authorities. The romance "Une fievre brulante" (which recurs throughout the opera in a very early anticipation of the Wagnerian leitmotif) is a superb melody too, sentimental in the best sense of the word. The only aria most people today are likely to be familiar with is "Je crains de lui parler la nuit", the song the old countess sings to herself just before she is murdered in Tchaikovsky's "Queen of Spades", but there are also lively peasant dances and choruses, catchy duets and trios and a barnstorming finale in which King Richard's loyal followers overrun the castle where he is being held and free him from its dungeon.
This re-release of a Belgian recording from the 1970s finally gives us a chance to hear this delightful opera in a decent recording. You could make a few criticisms of the performance: Doneux is better conducting the forthright music, as he can be rhythmically unyielding in the more lyrical moments; as Blondel, Michel Trempont is occasionally gruff (but it could be argued this is not inappropriate to the role); the chorus could do with a bit more presence. But this is a vast improvement on the only previously available version, a rather rough and ready (if enthusiastic) live recording on Nuova Era.
EMI have managed to squeeze the entire opera onto a single CD. They also give us a second disc containing another historically important French opera of the time, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Le Devin du Village" ("The Village Soothsayer"). Rousseau is deservedly more famous as a philosopher than as a musician and this isn't quite the musical treat Gretry's piece was, but it is an entertaining enough trifle. Louis de Froment with his soloists Nicolai Gedda and Janine Micheau give us the best recording we are ever likely to get of it in this mono version from the 1950s.
With two discs offered for the price of one, this set is an almost absurdly generous bargain and there is really no need for French opera fans to hesitate.

Customer Reviews:
An Enjoyable Themed Sampler.......2006-11-20
As other reviewers have mentioned, sometimes the playing is a touch ragged...but that is not necessarily bad. Ancient music, like ancient stories, tends to suffer from either too much respect or a lack thereof. The music on this has a lively feel that I like, rather than sounding like it's been preserved in a glass case. It also hasn't been moodified into some new-agey thingamajig.
I'm no ancient music scholar but I listen to a lot of it...and will give this collection to my siblings.
Robin Hood music.......2004-07-29
The intent of this recording (according to the liner notes) is to evoke some of the sounds sentiments and personalities of Robin Hood's time, then drawing on later ballads and dances to celebrate the enduring Robin Hood legend. In this regard, the CD does a good job, presenting a variety of works from the late 1100s through the 17th Century. I'll agree with another reviewer that the ensemble playing is not the best, and sounds unpolished in several songs. The soprano is quite good, though. And there are a number of good little dances. Ballads like Robin Hood & the Curtall Fryer, Robin Hood & Maid Marian, and The Wedding of Robin Hood are all classic humorous Robin tales. Unfortunately, enjoyment of them may suffer from the lack of a lyrics sheet. Overall, if you like Robin Hood stories and early music, this is a fairly fun and inexpensive CD to add to your collection.
Lackluster performance, strange selection.......2001-02-02
It is important to note that the British -Estampie- ensemble performing on this record is not the same artist as the German -Estampie- group who made -Crusaders in Nomine Domini-, a much better record than this.
The programme on this recording is a strange selection. Was the intent to produce a general early music sampler? If so, there are a lot of gaps here. On the one hand, we have Crusader era and troubadour material like -Palastinalied-; on the other hand, we have lightweight British pastoral stuff, like two versions of -Greensleeves-. If, as the title suggests, the intent was to produce a medieval/pastoral atmosphere recording, then raucous wind performances of monophonic dance material seem not to belong. Both monophonic material and some not particularly well played ensemble polyphony make a record that seems to lack focus.
The ensemble playing is not the best on this disc. The female vocalist is competent, but seems to invest very little passion in the material. This one definitely starts to drag early on.

The instrumental music is beautifully done, but I can't recommend the album because some of the vocal music is strained and wobbly at best. It lacks vocal talent. Some of the best selections are: Estampie; Ahi!Amors, Com Dure Departie; Sexte Estampie Real; Ar Ne Kuth Ich Sorghe Non (Dance); and Cuer Disirrous Apaie.

Customer Reviews:
Technically faulty.......2006-10-10
I have no problem with the music or the singing. Both operas are lovely as well as the voices. But there are annoying breaks between the tracks. A new track sometimes starts with a skip. Since I bought my copy on e-bay, I thought it was pirated an poorly executed, but it seems that this is a universal problem with this set.
No, no and no! Don't ever buy this!.......2002-08-31
This is a "solenne fiasco". The music is absolutely great, and the performance not. There's not a single competent singer in the whole production except a somewhat characteristic Marinella Pennicchi. The heroics of Hubert Zingerle as Richard in a great heroic aria "Si l'univers entier" are something beyond description (a totally wrong voice type with no technique), and the duetto between the shaking door-bell-like Comtesse and belling Richard is off-the-pitch shrieking. Even for a student productions this is a total flop.
By the way the recording with a break after each track makes you mad. What might be the reason for splitting the whole into irritating short cuts?
When is William Christie or Mark Minkowski taking this extremely gorgeous work in their schedule?
Of great historical interest and quite enjoyable.......2000-01-13
This is a delightful surprise! When I received for review a Nuova Era release of Gretry's
and the shorter
(7327-28), frankly I did not expect much more than two half forgotten pieces of historical interest only. After all, the first of the two was composed at a time when the French "opera comique" was passing out of the hands of singing actors and into those of acting singers; and with its alternating spoken dialogue and musical passages, works like this were setting the stage for the frivolities of Offenbach and later the genius of "Carmen." What I did not expect was the richness of the some of the musical passages in the first and the childlike but utterly charming numbers in the second. The plot of the "Richard" is some nonsense about the minstrel Blondel finding and causing the liberation of his King Richard from a tower. Forget that and concentrate on Blondel's Act One aria "O Richard, o mon roi" that gets the only applause one hears on this recording except at the end of each act and the powerful duet later in the work. The spoken dialogue wanders from the microphone now and then and the French of the some of the cast in this Italian "live" production might be suspect, but the music keeps one's interest throughout.
The 37 minute "Denys" must raise a smile to any one who recalls how any stage work under a Communist regime had to sing the praises of the System. Thus "Denys" is an out and out propaganda piece extolling "la Liberte" and the French Revolution.. This tale of a deposed tyrant in ancient Greece who becomes a tyrannic schoolmaster in Corinth is light hearted enough, but one can always feel the shadow of the guillotine not far in the distance; and indeed the libretto did not escape criticism. The "Marseillaise" at the end says it all. Although recorded only a decade ago, the sound is nothing to boast of, but there is no rival set to which to turn any way. Some obvious splices in the second work let us know that applause was being omitted (there would have been time for it on a 73:28 minute CD side) but again this is nit picking. "Richard" is conducted by Fabio Neri with the Orchestra dei Giovanai del Conservatorio Claudio Monteverdi di Bolzano; "Denys" by Francesco Vizioli with the Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia. None of the singers are outstandingly good, but all seem adequate to their assignments. A rare treat for those who like to see from whence their favorite operas have sprung.
