Soul of the Sabbath

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
“During the Middle Ages, under the influence of the Kabbalah, Jewish bards began to compose zemirot, sacred songs for the Sabbath table. The lyrics were written down, but the tunes were not. So, while the poetry of these songs has survived, more or less intact, over the centuries, the music has changed as Jews in each land and in each generation have given new voice to the time-honored words.

This album presents a sampling of zemirot from various traditions and in various styles. Some of these zemirot are presented as they were originally conceived, simple folksongs intended for families to sing as they sat around the Sabbath table. In other case we have presented the traditional melodies in artistic choral arrangements. Some selections are newly composed works, reflecting contemporary responses to the ancient texts. Herein, through a wide range of expressions, we pay homage to the music that is the soul of the Sabbath”. -Joshua Jacobson

An excellent introduction for one of the bands that set the standard for heavy metal. We Sold Our Soul for Rock & Roll features the original lineup of Black Sabbath, including Ozzy Osbourne on vocals; the songs are selected from the band's recordings up through 1975. The album features several classic songs, several of which are still on rock radio play lists: "Paranoid," "War Pigs," "Iron Man," and the ballad "Changes." There's also the humorous "Fairies Wear Boots," the vaguely psychedelic "Am I Going Insane," and the dark, macabre "Black Sabbath" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." Most Sabbath fans will already have the albums from which the songs on this collection are taken. However, for the listener new to Sabbath, it's the perfect place to start. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars If you've only got room for one Sab album, make it this one!.......2007-06-16

This is all the Black Sabbath I own. Yeah, I've heard the classic Paranoid at a friend's house and liked it, but I decided to go with this instead because I wanted the basics outside of Paranoid. And man, did I get 'em! 14 classic Ozzy tracks, and 13 are great - my favorites are Iron Man - with one of the best introductions ever (thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... DOO DOO... I AM IRON MAN!) and that pentatonic riff we all know so well (six minutes of head-banging goodness), the thrasher Paranoid; slow-burning antiwar epic War Pigs (Even if it commits the cardinal sin of rhyming by rhyming "masses" with "masses"), the acoustic/electric, Led Zeppelin-like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath; the infamous band title track, which may have a better intro than even Iron Man (the rainfall, the churchbells, the tritone - I'll never hear AC/DC's totally awesome Hells Bells the same way again), the bluesy Wizard, pot ode Sweet Leaf (with my favorite Sab riff ever), and the resident simple headbangers Tomorrow's Dream and NIB.
But what the hell is Changes? No more sensitive piano ballads for Sab, the DEFINITIVE heavy metal band out of the "Big Three" of early metal (the others being Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin). Zeppelin doesn't win the award, because Jimmy Page's guitar tone can't touch Tony Iommi's, and in truth, I find Deep Purple too boring to be definitive anything. And while I personally prefer Zeppelin, who overcomes their Achilles heel (Robert Plant, who sings like he swallowed something and can't write a decent set of lyrics when he isn't plagarizing Willie Dixon, AKA the best American composer EVER) with their pure instrumental skill, I very much dig Sab. They aren't your typical testosterone-laden metal band - their lyrics touch on Satanism, drug addiction, war, the occult, horror, sci-fi, all kinds of fun stuff. The lyrics sometimes read as stupid - there wasn't exactly a Bob Dylan in this group - but the way Ozzy delivers them, in that infamous monotone, is perfect. And as I said before, nobody can match Iommi's perfect tone.
One more thing I'd like to point out is the album's title. "We sold our SOUL for Rock 'n' Roll". Great concept, yeah, but note the funny little grammar violation - that implies that the group all shared a soul, and they agreed they'd sell it for rock and roll. I mean, Ozzy never struck me as that bright or anything, but come ON! Oh well, a minor quibble. So even though Changes sucks, this should be in any rocker's collection. Throw up those devil horns and ROCK OUT!

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2007-06-10

Lots of great material here. The only major issue is that you've probably heard many of these songs on classic rock radio a million times. They're still great songs, though. The album comes in at just over 74 minutes, so you're getting a whole lotta sabbath here. This is probably a great disc to buy for someone who enjoys Sabbath, but has never bought any of their CD's (e.g., maybe they only own stuff on tape or vinyl).

5 out of 5 stars We Sold Our Soul............2006-10-15

This is a compilation album that covers the original Ozzy years of the band up through the "Sabotage album. The original vinyl version was a 2 record set, that has been reduced to a single disc for CD. Two tracks were omitted on the CD version. This is a cool collection and includes some of the band's all time best stuff. About half of the "Paranoid" album is represented here along with "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard" from their first one. Every song her is a classic including two of my all time favorite Sabbath tracks "Children Of The Grave" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". The ballad "Changes" is a bit of a change of pace for the band (it was recently re-recorded as a duet between Ozzy and Kelly Osborne). One of the things that I find interesting and is a bit of the sign of the times when these tracks were recorded in the early 70's, is that there are no less than 3 tracks on this collection that are basically love songs devoted to drugs. "Fairies Wear Boots" is about acid, "Sweet Leaf" Marijuana, and "Snowblind" cocaine. The album closes with another Sabbath classic "N.I.B." (Nativity In Black). In more recent years there have been Sabbath compilations released that cover significantly more ground than this one, so if you are just looking to get into the band I would probably recommend one of those, but for the time this one was released it was a very nice collection indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Metal Legacy.......2006-07-17

This is where modern metal began. This "best of" CD captures the best of the Ozzy-era Sabbath and includes the band's biggest hits. A great "starter kit" for metal fans.

Top Tracks: "Paranoid", "War Pigs", "Iron Man", "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath"

3 out of 5 stars Great CD...but.......2006-04-29

I used to own the double-album. Remember vinyl albums? Well the double album version had more songs than the CD so I'm giving it 3 stars even though all the songs deserve 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Collection of the Roots of Metal.......2006-01-08

I'm not sure what originally attracted me to the vinyl album in the first place. I was a little nervous because I was not a Black Sabbath fan, and wasn't sure what I was going to get. However, a friend of mine had recommended the group to me and I thought, why not?

From the moment "Black Sabbath" began to play, I was hooked. The heavy bass, the drums, a full heavy sound, and yet so sparse, was outstanding. Looking back when I bought this on vinyl, I was into The Moody Blues and King Crimson, which we now recognize as progressive rock, and listening to Black Sabbath, I see some of the elements I liked so much in progressive rock.

While I still have the vinyl album, I had to have the CD because of its portability. Even better, this two-disc CD has the songs missing from the one-disc version, "Warning" and "Laguna Sunrise," along with "Wicked World." While this CD cost more than the other, unless you have the original albums you may want these three excellent songs.

If you are a hard-core Black Sabbath fan, then there is probably no point in you owning this CD unless you just have to have everything they ever recorded. Or perhaps, as another reviewer noted, you were looking for something to play at a party that is a Sabbath mix. On the flip side, if you are a casual Black Sabbath fan, then this could really be a good CD for you. However, Black Sabbath is like many great groups in that a "best of" collection really catches only a fragment of the quality of their music.

There is no point in reviewing the individual songs. I like every one. They are fun, full of bass, heavy lead guitar riffs, and drums that beat into and out of the songs to give a flavor that is hard to believe from typically three instruments. There are whimsical songs ("Fairies Wear Boots", "Am I Going Insane") that are just plain fun. Songs of warning ("War Pigs", "Iron Man" and "Warning"), a ballad ("Changes") and a pretty instrumental ("Laguna Sunrise"). If you have wondered about the roots of metal, look no more, you've pretty much found the tap root. Sit back, crank up the bass, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Memories in Black.......2004-09-17

I remember my dad having this album and he used to listen to it when he would drink. Those are the only memories I have of my dad and when I hear a Black Sabbath song that he used to play (which are all on this album) I can just see him sitting there singing to us kids. The one Black Sabbath song I will always cherish is Changes. When this song would come on he would put me on his lap and sing this only to me. That was OUR song and still is. Since then he has passed away and so in his memory I will get this record just for the memories.

5 out of 5 stars One of the definitive greatest hits albums.......2002-05-03

This digitally remastered reissue restores this album to its full two-disc glory, adding back three songs cut from the anemic U.S. CD version - "Warning", "Wicked World", and "Languana Sunrise". All are excellent and add more dimensions to the Sabbath sound. "Warning" is probably one of the trippiest songs they ever did, more in line with the late 60's acid rock scene than with the heavy metal sound that Sabbath helped invent. "Wicked World" is a bluesy riff-driven jaunt with numerous mood changes and a killer (but short) Tommy Iommi solo. But the best of the three restored tracks is "Laguana Sunrise", an acoustic instrumental that along with the ballad "Changes" and the Moody Blues-ish "Am I Going Insane (Radio)" really stand in sharp contrast to the other songs on the collection and mark Sabbath as a more diverse band than they really get credit for.

Along with those you get the classic rock radio staples "Sweet Leaf", "War Pigs", "Iron Man", and "Paranoid", along with classics "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", and "N.I.B." Throw in a handful of other great tracks, and this is truly the only album the casual Sabbath fan will really need. And the remastered sound, cool packaging, and expanded track listing makes the higher price a moot point at best.

5 out of 5 stars Sabbath at their best.......2002-05-03

It's my firm belief that some bands, like Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin to name a few, must NOT release any best-of albums, because each studio release is not just a set of songs, but a solid piece of work where all the songs are meant to intertwine into each other thus making each album a unique recording. Any compilation would kill the drive and spirit the songs hold as integral part of the album. However, this CD set is not the case and I recant the above statement without any hesitation or reservation.

I still remember that each time I played this record back in the mid-70's I had a feeling that I was embarking on an eerie and haunting yet nevertheless breath taking and flamboyant musical adventure you would wish to experience over, over and over again. I have no idea how the CD releases are packaged, but I owned several vinyl copies of the album in all those years and still own one with the scary inner picture of a girl lying in a casket, although I don't listen to the album anymore. As a true Black Sabbath fan for more that 27 years I prefer to listen to their studio albums, but still this one is more than just an album for me. It's more like a testament - so I treasure my old vinyl copy the way a true believer treasures an ancient Bible (yes, I do understand the irony).

So. If you a Black Sabbath fan, then you probably don't have to own this album. But if you belong to the digital era generation and look for something special, start your collection with this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Phew!.......2002-01-19

Where do I begin? This album is probably THE definitive Heavy metal release of the seventies. Sabbath clearly established themselves with this one. The album was a double release, I'm not sure how the CD is packaged, but it is worth the money. believe me.
Black Sabbath touched on so many subjects that the recording industry (and society in general) refused to even discuss. They wrote songs about witchcraft (NOT! endorsing it, I might add) war, pollution (War Pig's!) drug abuse, paranoia and just general teen angst. What is even more amazing, is that even while listening to this recording, one can catch a feeling of subtle humor wrapped around just about every song, i.e. "...People think I'm insane 'cause I'am frowning all the time."
The line up of Tony Iommi (Guitar), Terry 'Geezer' Butler (Bass), Bill Ward (Drums-and a underrated drummer at that), and of course Ozzy Osbourne on vocals, created a driving metal machine that most certainly dispensed with the "flower power" mentality. Though one can find humor in some of the writings, many of the songs were also of a very serious nature. Sabbath wanted to be REAL about their music, and this recording definitely shows this to be so.
Prototypical heavy metal riffs were laid down with ALL of Sabbath albums, as this is a collection of recordings from "Black Sabbath" to "Vol-Four." There are some parts that drag. "Warning", in particular, is a bit redundant,(though Iommi comes through with a riveting solo here also). Would have liked to see "Electric Funeral" to have made the cut here also, but it was simply not included.
This is a recording of a TRUE heavy metal band that worked with a bond and chemistry that is sorely lacking with many of todays bands. If you are a true heavy metal fan, and haven't found this one yet, you are in for a very pleasant surprise. They don't get any louder (or any more realistic lyrically) than this one. The only thing that bothers me, is I shudder to think if the title has any truth to it. But then again that would be right in line with the Sabbath tradition...realism, albeit painful realism

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Gently uplifting compositions by a sweet-voiced singer/songwriter.......2006-10-01

Weaving elements of folk, Celtic and world music into a rich, comforting tapestry of sound, vocalist and keyboardist Lydia McCauley offers an intimate musical journey through life, love and spirituality. Her voice is lovely - pure, honest and flushed with the soft warmth of a mother's lullaby--and her soothing vocals are featured in all but one of the songs on this album. There's a warm wistfulness and sense of down-to-earth, motherly love about McCauley's lushly arranged music that is very appealing--great to relax to at the end of a hard day and to remind one of the important things in life. This debut album, with it's varied harmonies and mix of musical influences, is my favorite of her releases. Standout tracks on "Sabbath Day's Journey" include the moving and beautifully mournful "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair," the jaunty "Asissi," the Celtic-like "Buon Giorno, Buena Gente" with its changing tempos, and the contemplative "Brimstone," a song about the natural cycles of life, creativity and hope. In addition to accompanying herself expertly on piano and synthesizer, McCauley fleshes out the sound of her songs with the help of a sizeable number of acoustic instrumentalists: Phil Heaven on bowed strings and doumbek, David J. MacVittie on bouzouki, guitar, sitar and doumbek, Frank Olsen on bass and bass guitar, Larry Knechtel on piano, Paul Englesbert on concertina and penny whistle, Frank Jackson on recorders, Jud Sherwood on drums, and co-producer Kurt Scherer on bells and (?) Garden Weasel. (I'm sure there's a story behind that, but it doesn't appear in the liner notes!). Lydia McCauley's next release is the hypnotic "Entrances," followed by "The Beauty of the Earth." If you enjoy her gentle, sonorous compositions, you will also like the work of harpist Lisa Lynne, harpist Thomas Loefke, singer Susan McKeown, guitarist Richard Searles, and the acoustic Celtic groups Orion and Orison.

    5 out of 5 stars Lydia's Music is Evocative.......1999-11-27

Sabbath Day's Journey is indeed a journey. One of spirit and grace and feeling, which are reflections of Lydia herself and her band. The first selection, Mother's Heart is a touching, lyrical piece. Her Celtic and Appalachian roots blend beautifully to produce the music of her soul and the ability to express feeling. Black is the Color is a haunting piece. Lydia's music displays the spectrum of spiritual to playful. It gets regular airplay on KSER. I have given this CD as gifts and will do so again. Lydia's music is reminiscent of Loreen McKennitt's. It is music to be enjoyed over and over. The many layers of its sound and meaning come through more with each listen!

4 out of 5 stars Fresh breeze outside, warm fire in........1999-10-24

First, check out the eclectic folk instrumentation: not just viola, guitar and sitar, but also the doumbek, bouzouki and the Garden Weasel (it makes a nice percussive sound not found elsewhere). Then, listen to the clear vocals of Lydia McCauley. Lydia and her band sweep in with a debut album from Brimstone Music that deserves to be heard. Lydia has written or adapted songs that call from the heart to the heart, like a fresh breeze outside, warm fire in. Drawing from her Appalachian background, she sings an achingly lovely, simple rendition of the folk song "Black is the Color." Her own songs of the Pacific Northwest, such as "Grace Day," call out for deeper intimacy: "Forgiveness is a healing of a wound between us both." Drawing inspiration from spiritual soulmates Francis of Assisi and Julian of Norwich, she creates songs around ancient words, such as these from Julian: "All shall be well, all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well." Around that one sentence she and the band have made a swirling temple of song to end the album. The music is similar to that of Loreena McKennitt, but Lydia has more in her collection than Loreena's signature Celtic harp and high notes. Lydia's music stretches the concepts of journeys. Her journeys in this album dance between spiritual and secular lyrics, European and American music, and the inward and outward self. An excellent first CD, Sabbath Day's Journey is finding its way to an audience of thoughtful music lovers around the country.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of Black Sabath - one of the most complete to date.......2002-02-08

Sorry folks, but ... am I apparently the only one who knows that this is A GREATEST HITS COMPILATION and not the album "Heaven & Hell"? Anyway, it a 5 star best of, my opinion, better than any best of ever released from BS. And check out the booklet: the text inside is 100% hot pure heavy metal philosophy of life! It starts with: "And they never gave a f..., man!"
