Bruchner: Missa No. 2/Psalm 150/Te Deum

Helmuth Rilling has never made a finer record than this. The performance of the Te Deum is especially remarkable. The tempos are perfect- -grand but propulsive--and the chorus is ideally balanced against the orchestra, permitting an unusually high number of words to be clearly heard. Although his symphonies are famously long, Bruckner's vocal works are all fairly brief. The Mass No. 2, for choir and wind ensemble, has a spiritual purity about it that is absolutely unique in 19th-century music; and it's over with in about half an hour. Finally, the jubilant Psalm 150 is as extrovert and the Mass is intimate, and makes a superb conclusion to a disc that gives you the best of Bruckner as a choral composer, in performances that are second to none. -- David Hurwitz
