Dante and the Troubadour
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
We may remember Dante today primarily for his Divine Comedy, but he was famously fascinated by the 12th-century French poet-musicians known as troubadours. He chose many examples of their writing as evidence of the beauty of the vernacular language. Several of these favorite Dante songs are featured here, eloquently and passionately performed by one of today's foremost early music ensembles. --David Vernier

An Important Adjunct to Dante Studies and to Interstate Driving.......2005-09-27
This CD is an important adjunct to Dante studies, as his Divine Comedy carries a major subtext of his response to the troubadour school in verse and music. We will never know how the music actually sounded, of course, but Sequentia delivers a hauntingly beautiful facsimile, based on scholarship but not so much so as to be stilted and dry. Not hardly. Besides broadening our appreciation of Dante by putting forth major songs and singers reflected in his work, this CD is catchy as Buddy Holly or King Presley, as at home on the road as Willy Nelson. Great for listening anywhere, at home or office, great for either attentive study or as background for pounding computer keys. Absolutely fabulous for interstate highway driving on the grand prairie. Put it in your CD changer between Highway 61 and Aimee Mann's Lost in Space, as you cruise across our bounteous land, and see what happens.
