This CD includes a collection of Sioux and Navajo spiritual songs. Both the singing style and musical accompaniment of these songs significantly depart from the rigid convention of peyote singing - the singing is gentle, almost gospel like and there is no water drum. The songs are simply among the most poignant and beautiful I have ever heard - filled with devotion to the Creator and strength which comes from true humility. Listening to them is listening to profound teachings about the spiritual and the earthly and about our longing for beauty and truth. I highly recommend this CD.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

In Native American mythology, Coyote Oldman is a trickster. It's also a long-lived duo that takes Native American flutes and sends them through prairie cathedrals on wings of digital reverb, delays, and harmonization. Michael Graham Allen makes the flutes and plays them along with Barry Stramp, who routes the flutes' windblown melodies through a maze of effects. Their music is born in the moment, reflecting and refracting through the many mirrored images of flutes that bounce back at them through the processing.

In Beauty I Walk is a collection of their work from 1986 through 1995 and it's a perfect way to become immersed in the sound of this unusual group. It includes "Night Forest," a song that shows their Native American influences and ends up with "Compassion," featuring Japanese soprano Hui Cheng. They don't play Native American music, but their slow-motion melodies seem born from the American plains. --John Diliberto

I found this group's website in an article on smudging (space cleansing sage ritual). A moment later I was listening to a few of their songs on ITunes and was blown away. I sat there for a very long time, just listening to one song after another and feeling so good. What a pleasurable, pleasing journey. After this experience I just can't imagine anyone NOT being affected by this music in one way or another. It's **that** good.

True Beauty.......2000-01-30

I have had the pleasure of hearing one of Ms. Zimmerman's choirs perform. She is a wonderful conductor and teacher. This is proven in the way her choir sings. Earth Chants is a wonderful record and I would recommend it to anyone, whether you like choiral music or not. They SBHS Madrigals have near, if not perfect intonation and their songs have so much emotion. I have had the pleasure of singing the Brahms and Cantante Domino, both of which are very beautiful, as well as difficult to sing. If you like this album, check out Canticle, Zimmerman's newest group, or the Lompoc High School Madrigals (this is hard to find, you can call the school for more info). Both are very talented groups.

SBHS Madz are truely wonderful in this record. They have great dicipline and perfect intonation. I would recomend this to anyone who enjoys choral music.

Achingly beautiful minimalism.......2004-03-30

I live in on the outskirts of the desert Southwest, in Monument, Colorado. I have made numerous excursions-pilgrimages to the unique, blasted, spiritually-drenched landscape of Southern Utah/North-Central New Mexico depicted in this entirely remarkable disc. And I have never come away with anything other then entire awe. And I can say without equivocation that the music of Peter Garland captures the geographic splendor of this magnificent desolation as nothing else can.

Minimalism, the MO of this disc, represents an entirely apposite approach to depicting the desperate glories of this stark, startling landscape. Endless azure sky; arid, mesquite-sage wilderness, dotted by buttes and mesas; no settlements for hundreds of kilometers: a wilderness, but one suffused with magic. Land of enchantment, indeed. How to capture its subtle, wayward, unharnessable glories? Live there. Learn its secrets. Drink deep of its subtle wisdom. Meditate on its eldritch beauty. And that's exactly what Peter Garland did.

Others, notably Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams, have sought to capture its magic in paint on canvas and black and white photography. Indeed, entire communities (Santa Fe and Taos) have sprung up as graphic art-testimonies to its arcane, mysterious hold on the human spirit.

Here, Peter Garland, a transplanted Easterner, lured by the indomitable magic of this landscape, has found, serendipitously, the perfect aural vehicle for its monumental splendors: The prodigious gifts of Aki Takahashi and the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio. Takahashi, a pianist of magnificent and exceptional gifts, imbues the spacious compositions of Garland with a yearning, Sehnsuct-filled desperation/home-longing never before encountered in music. Space and sonority constitute her tools. Peculiar affinity, her method. These combine with Garland's visionary compositions to produce music never before heard, music of the highest accomplishment, music of ravishing beauty, music of uncompromising starkness and skeletal austerity. But of soul-devastating splendor.

Think Tony Hillerman, William Least Heat Moon, Dances with Wolves, Geronimo, Dee Brown, Edward Abbey, purged of their anger, put to music, and you get a poor picture of the glorious enchantment offered up here.

There is a very vibrant strain in American art that we rarely encounter, like an aesthetic still in exile,or one still submerged beneath the surface of market flash and postmodernist force fields. The Video artist Bill Viola has devoted his work to place and has written about it along with Lucy Lippard both have informed us of the rarely encountered mysterious cultural bound importance people attach to a place,a view of a modest mountain overlooking a quiet river near a forgotten oyster bar. Peter Garland's music has found an equivalent to this set of hidden cultural values of place. He emerged from the new generation of American composers rejecting the New York Establishment 12-Tone Serial language. Well being more West Coast bound his music has been forever more attuned with pure beauty without the European conceptual baggage that seemed to only grow into forever more convolutedness of concept."Walk in Beauty" for piano solo is a great example of Garland's musical language, dare I say language for that is a European perspective. His music more elicits,solicits again an evocative place, and a place, a sonoric one we all seem to know. One of simple melodic beauty, but not necessarily a predictable or a shaped one. Garland has an evocative interesting voice, and although he utilizes tonal and modal schemes,usually very static, his textures seem to drift gently,like wind chimes, chimes that interface with winds from the Gulf,lucious ones. In "Walk in Beauty" the extreme upper registers of the piano is utilized with a gentle repetition of single tones around an emerging melodic shape,with simple yet authoritative chords as punctuation. Likewise the inspired placeset in motion the more extended piano solo here "Jornada del Muerto"(Journey of the Dead One) and is about the vastness and emptiness of the forbidden American West, brings one (in Garland's words) "face-to-face with death". This piece elicits a real space in southern New Mexico,where Garland had resided. This is a multi-movement sonata-like work of density,but one that is penetrable,with modal like broken chords set off with missing registers in the center of the piano. We tend to hear then each hand's argument. Aki Takahashi is a gifted interpreter here, sensitive to Garland's voice. Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio also are fine senstive players. It's curious how Garland's penchant for staticness of music materials resolves in an unpredictable beauty,where lines of the trio here seem to be a collective emotive argument, or not an argument at all, simply an affirmation of a simple melodic tale.

Album Description

Contemporary songs of great beauty and approachability. Most of the songs are world premiere recordings. This is also the first compact disk recording of Dan Locklair's "In the Almost Evening." Carol Sams wrote her three song cycle for the recording, based upon the poetry of Arthur Mampel. The album was recorded on location in Lagerquist Concert Hall on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University.
