5 out of 5 stars stress release.......2007-05-02

Best heard on a rainy day. All you need is an hour to sit and listen with no interruptions with your favorite beverage and complete concentration. If this doesn't move you, nothing will. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every cent for the Mazurkas alone........2006-09-20

The only fault I can find with this recording is the absence of MORE....more mazurkas, more ballades and more scherzi (Read:all the ballades and all the scherzi). Wonderful playing of Chopin, a composer of beautiful, radical, tempestuously tranquil piano music. Michelangeli is right inside this reportoire, and delivers a disc of music with and for many moods. A relatively expensive imported disc, this is essential listening if you are at all interested in Chopin's oeuvre.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-02-24

I have been a serious music fan for many years. I have listened and relistened to a great many recordings. This is my favorite. I have rarely gone more than a week without listening to it. The muzurkas give me the chills. I have long made it a point to listen to any recording of the first Ballade I can find. This one remains my absolute favorite. If, as a culture, we were forced to choose one recording of piano music to last for all time and above all others, I would certianly vote early and vote often for this magnificent recording.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Chopin.......2005-05-10

A disc to treasure. 10 Mazurkas beautifully played by Michelangeli, and staggering performances of the G-Minor Ballade and B-flat minor Scherzo, all in superb sound. I recall when this recital was issued on LP that most critics panned it. I don't know why. It has always been one of the outstanding Chopin collections and one of Michelangeli's finest achievements. Put this alongside the Testament 2 CD live recital (with the Schumann Carnaval), and the Ravel and Debussy recordings as perhaps this great pianist's finest recorded legacies.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Immaculate........2004-10-30

At first, Michelangeli's Chopin seems linear and technically stupendous.

Upon careful listening, however, it unfolds as something completely spiritual, emotional, and yes, absolutely technically stupendous.

Nobody plays these pieces quite like Michelangeli. He does not allow himself to pass through these scores fluidly, lightly, but rather uses what is written in the way of basic notes as a means of expressing his own Inner voice. The results are something of a minor miracle, the perfect union of two distant souls in artistic communion.

The sound is excellent and the performances are immaculate.

Wholeheartedly recommended.
