Diporti Di Euterpe

Editorial Reviews

The 17th-century singer and composer Barbara Strozzi published eight collections of vocal music full of surprising dramatic effects and vocal fireworks--music equal in quality to that of nearly any of her male counterparts. This disc features the contents of her seventh book, Diporti di Euterpe (subtitled "Cantatas and Ariettas for Solo Voice"). Ensemble Galilei (here consisting of three guitars, four large lutes, and organ) provides lively accompaniment to soprano Emanuela Galli, who sings with a clear tone and interesting embellishments but without much vocal presence or compelling personality. Her performance, while quite respectable, gives the lie to the now-commonplace notion that Italian singers always do Italian early music better than foreigners; if you want to hear Strozzi performed with real passion and excitement, you should turn (believe it or not) to an Englishwoman--the magnificent Catherine Bott --Matthew Westphal
