Editorial Reviews
Austin-American Statesman, September 7, 2000
"Hinsley plays the classical guitar with rare clarity and composure...On its own merits his music predicts a prolific artistic future."
About the Artist
By age six, Matthew Hinsley read music on piano, violin and cello. He was ten when he began studying classical guitar. For him, the guitar held magical power and determined the direction of his life. As a high school sophomore, Matthew enrolled at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. This international school was populated not only by students and faculty but often by recruiters from all the major American music conservatories. He was a student at Interlochen for scarcely three months... read more

buy or rent the DVD instead.......2006-05-23
The DVD of this concert is excellent and sounds great. (Netflix has it)
However, the sound quality of the CD is flat----very dull. What a shame. I can't stand to listen to it.
A little sloppy, but fun.......2005-09-28
I saw the Mavericks a few times before they broke up, and on the Trampoline tour, I was disappointed that they had brought horns for the new songs, but sent them away for the older songs that could have been enhanced. It almost seemed lazy of Malo to bring horns, but not bother to write charts for the older songs.
That has been rectified, finally, by this album. Not all of the songs are gems, but the performances are solid and the horns absolutely add depth to the songs. My only real complaint is that the sound mix isn't great. Of course you lose some of the studio precision in a club setting, but it's not like these tapes came right off the board into your car. They could have cleared up some of the muddiness and mixed the horns and vocals a little higher.
Other than that, this is worth owning if you like the Mavericks.
Excellent live renditions of some of The Mavericks' best material.......2005-07-03
"The Definitive Collection" remains the best place for newcomers to sample The Mavericks, but this 2004 live album would make a terrific introduction as well. And fans will certainly want to hear this almost flawless live album featuring a horn-augumented version of The Mavericks performing most of their best and best-known material.
It's not spliced together from various recordings; "Live In Austin, Texas" was recorded in one "take" on June 2, 2004 at Stubb's Bar-B-Q in Austin, and The Mavericks' eclectic blend of rock n' roll, country, latin folk and sophisticated pop works well in this live setting...a couple of songs, like "Siboney" and "San Jose", never really get off the ground, but most of what's here is very good indeed. It's hard to sit still to these swinging, energetic renditions of songs like "Dance The Night Away" and "There Goes My Heart", and while it would have been nice to hear "Things I Cannot Change" and "Here Comes My Baby", there is more than enough good stuff here to keep the listener interested.
Singer Raul Malo is in top form, and all music-lovers should be able find something to like on this 73-minute collection of The Mavericks' melodic country-rock.
I dare you to not start bopping your head like a pigeon to "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down"!
Dwight Yoakam + Mariachis + Big Band Sound = The Mavericks.......2004-12-16
Awesome album; awesome group. An absolute must.
Been There, Would Do It Again.......2004-10-20
Okay, I was there. Third row, center, dancing in 90+ degree heat, with everyone else lucky enough to get a ticket. Austin and the Mavericks have a special love affair, with this the band's third appearance in this town in six months (they also played the 2003 Austin City Limits Music Festival a year ago September). The Mavericks made their comeback last year with their self-titled release featuring "I Want to Know" and a local favorite "San Jose", a tribute to a South Austin hotel the band likes to stay at when they are in town.
The Mavericks now include Eddie Perez on guitar, who fits comfortably in the band with his guitar virtuosity and accompanying vocals. The Mavericks-Eddie, Raul Malo, Paul Deakin, and Robert Reynolds-display consummate professionalism which is only surpassed by their down-to-earth humor and presence. The set list covers hits from the beginning of their career together to solo Raul offerings, including the swoonable "Siboney" originally recorded with Los Super Seven. "Every Little Thing About You" was a crowd favorite and the high temperature did not dissuade the hip swaying and singing along that permeated the night. Raul's voice has been compared to Roy Orbison's and it was a marvel to watch him hit the notes up close. The rest of the band was phenomenal too, with Robert and Paul switching instruments for a song or two. The spicy horn section, Jerry Dale McFadden on keys, and Alberto Salas on percussion made for a wonderful, too short night of incredible music. The Mavericks are better than ever and this album was well worth the wait.

Customer Reviews:
This is a very fine recording.......2003-07-06
Of all of the radio show and outtake cd's released after Ronnie Lanes death, this one is by far the best.Lanes singing is a bit more deliberate then in his pre-illness days,,but that only adds charm to the songs in my opinion. This also makes some of the lyrics to a couple of his old songs much easier to understand. The sound quality of the cd is much better than I expected, and the backing players are very "Slim Chance" sounding. As has been mentioned the liner notes and photos are outstanding.
All in all a great cd,a treasure really.I cant imagine any fan of Ronnies being disappointed with this release.
Ronnie's Last Stand.......2002-11-20
Ronnie Lane's last recordings while living in Texas -- nearly all radio appearances -- include some of the greatest renditions of some of his best-loved songs. Despite struggling with MS, we find Ronnie in fine humor, chatting away hilariously with the radio hosts, his band, and none other than Ian MacLagan, who phones in to reminisce about some of the tracks.
The bulk of the album, a good 60 minutes of it, consists of the songs themselves, sung by Ronnie and played by various bands. To begin, Ronnie's voice is only slightly affected by MS on a couple of tracks where, if one really strains and pays close attention, he begins to warble a word here and there ("Nowhere To Run" comes to mind). Besides that, no problem whatsoever. Ronnie is not only in tune and highly expressive throughout, but he is also a little huskier and warmer in his singing, qualities that mix well with his band arrangements.
Although Ronnie's bands change (no more than thrice, if that) throughout the album, the empathy, sensitivity, and capability of each musician is indisputable. Mostly armed with fiddle, accordion, bass, and acoustic guitar plus drums, the bands do a briliant job in couching Lane's songs in earthy yet tasteful backdrops that highlight the emotional dimension of the music. Among the true gems here, we have "Kustchy Rye," "Roll On Babe," "Rio Grande," and absolutely knock-out versions of the brilliant "The Poacher" and a country-ish "Ooh La La" with Lane signing to acoustic guitar and fiddle.
Of all albums released by Ronnie Lane, "Live In Austin" is his most intimate, intense, and authentic in reflecting a one-of-a-kind personality in all its charm.
Better Than the Critics Would Have You Believe.......2002-04-20
I have to agree with the previous reviewers. This may not have been the best music of Ronnie Lane's career, but his enthusiasm for the material more than makes up for the increasing difficulties Lane experienced in his battle with MS. With Lane's last proper studio album being 1980's "See Me" and his untimely death in 1997, this is likely to be the last collection of previously unreleased material to be issued.
The liner notes are thoughtful and insightful. The 22-page booklet also includes many wonderful photos from Lane's final six years in Texas along with extensive track by track annotation. And then there is 73 minutes of music and interviews.
I had read numerous reviews when this album was first released and all of them dwelt on Lane's declining physical health and the impact it had on these live recordings. Frankly, I don't hear what they were talking about. Granted, Lane was no longer able to play the guitar and he often had to sit down to perform (see the photo on p. 9), but his vocals are still warm and charming and his backing band--an ever changing lineup--was if nothing else always competent.
If you enjoyed Lane's work with The Faces or his solo work from the Seventies, you'll find much to enjoy here. This release is very much a labor of love by producer Kent Benjamin and is a welcome addition to the catalog of one of the music world's most endearing artists. RECOMMENDED
A labour of love.......2001-07-28
Musically this is not one of the great Ronnie Lane albums, the sound quality is not too bad, but to be honest by the 1980s Ronnie's voice had coarsened a bit and he had lost the fragility and vulnerability that characterized his singing with the Faces and with Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance. However, if you are already a fan this is definitely worth buying -- the record company have done a fantastic job in selecting songs and interview clips and the CD is beautifully packaged with an informative booklet. It is a real labour of love. Ronnie comes across as an extremely nice guy and utterly without self-pity. It is very hard to listen to this without shedding a tear.
Don't start a Ronnie love affair here.......2001-01-20
One of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. Its next to impossible not to get teary eyed playing it. Emotions are just pouring all over the place. But if its so great why a 3? If it has to be judged on sound its a 1, but judging on the character Ronnie and that he would leave us soon you can't help but love it and give it a 5, so get it when you have all of Ronnie's other stuff. Even with the bad sound its a real treat.

THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE AND POINTLESS CD.
This is an expensive single disc CD. One side is music and the other side is enhanced so you can play the video on your computer. It is only 52 minutes long.
This CD consists of the short songs from the complete concert that is featured on the DVD of the same name. This CD contains the lesser work from the concert. The only thing of interest on most of the songs, is that there is Randall Bramlett on saxophone.
This show came just after guitartist Mike Howser died. George McConnell has just joined the band, but is so new, he is listed as a guest musician. He sounds out of place on most of the songs on this CD. He fits much better on the songs that were not included on the CD.
Get the DVD instead. It has many great moments. The only real good song included on the CD is Rock.
Good Panic at Great Venue.......2004-07-15
This DVD is bittersweet. I love the fact that they are releasing DVD's but its sad not to see Mikey Houser in his spot ripping the Fender. George McConnel tries his best to fit in here but gets upstaged by the Guitarist from the North Mississippi All Stars on the Rolling Stones cover of "Stop Breaking Down Blues". This is definately the highlight of the show. You also get some nice sax work by Randall Bramlett who has played with everyone to help fill the void of Mikey. Other highlights include the "Rock" with great slide work by John Bell. "Picken up the Pieces" lets Randall stretch out. JB does Cat Stevens well by covering his easy to relate to "Trouble". The bonus on the DVD are ok but its all about the music. The true bonus is they released this in DTS audio format.
Good buy.......2003-10-21
This new cd is very good. You get to hear lots of songs that I really haven't heard on a live Widespread CD before. It seems as though there is a little more saxophone present, which I like. Definately a good buy for any Widespread fan.
