Customer Reviews:
James Levine's 25th Anniversary Met Opera Gala.......2006-08-14
It is an incredibly beautiful album. As with any album I like some pieces better than the next but overall it is beautiful and soothing. I keep it in the car and listen to it in horrid traffic time. It helps!
Passing the acid test.......2004-07-04
My acid test is whether I leave the CD in the player for repeated (and repeated) playings. This one makes my cut. Every track is not as marvelous as some, but each has its charms. The whole adds up to a delicious opera excursion.
I saw this live and was completely captivated. Without the visuals, it is just as wonderful. I too wish they would release the rest of this marathon extravaganza. It deserves to be memorialized.
Great cd.......2003-08-13
i recommend this cd it's great to listen to while walking the dog.Opera makes fluffy happy.
Great variety of fantastic singers!.......2002-01-07
This is as good as it gets. An awesome roster of international stars singing some of the best (but not the most well known) selections in all of opera, and of course James Levine, the man they are all celebrating. It almost goes without saying that Levine's conducting is without comparison throughout the recording. He is truly one of the best conductors of the last thirty years, and he has molded the Met Orchestra into the best in the world. This celebration perfectly captures the incredibly broad repertoire that he is familiar for. It starts out with a well-rounded performance of the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers by Bryn Terfel and Roberto Alagana. When I bought the CD I had never heard the incredible melody that forms the theme of the duet, but it is one of the best in all of opera. Renee Flemming gives a performance of "Despuis le jour" that would be hard to match for sheer vocal beauty. Her final pianisimo is stunning. Domingo and Ramey sing a typically excellent performance of the Faust duet, while Ileana Cotrubas, in a Lehar excerpt shows why she was one of the best lyric sopranos of the last 25 years. "O don fatale" as sung by Dolora Zajick is the thrilling experience it should be. She nails the top notes perfectly and still maintains the warm fullness of the bottom of her register. The 'bravas' start almost before she finishes her final note. The sextet from Don Giovanni is given a world class performance (I have never heard it done better). Ruth Ann Swenson displays awesome coluratura ability in Juliet's lively waltz song, soaring to a high D in the final cadenza. I am not a big fan of Die Fledermaus, but if you are you will surely love the included duet. I was also never a big Alfredo Kraus fan, and I think he sounds more than a bit strained while singing the famous aria from Werther. Not so Grace Bumbry, who's seductive performance of Delila's music should be the standard for this aria. Deborah Voight's Tannhauser is impeccable, while Frederica von Stade sounds a little shrill in her aria. To round out the program is possibly the most exquisite performance ever of some of the most gorgeous music ever written; the final trio from Die Rosenkavalier. It will make a Strauss convert out of anyone.
There are no problems with the live sound, which is crisp, clean and sounds like it could have come from a recording studio. My only complaint is the lack of an overture or other orchestral number that would showcae the Met orchetra. Overall a CD well worth your money. Hopefully DG will release another CD soon with the rest of the concert. You won't find these selections anywhere else so every minute of it will be new and fresh. Fantastic for hard core opera fans or beginners. Highly Recommended!

Recorded at the beginning of her career in 1976, this shows Frederica Von Stade as a bright, accomplished singer with a distinctive sound, a bit softer, smaller, and fresher than her voice is now. With a selection of arias including all the best mezzo-soprano moments from Berlioz's Beatrice et Benedict, Massenet's Werther and Cendrillon, Berlioz's Damnation of Faust, and what became her great party piece, the drunk aria from Offenbach's La Perichole, everything is utterly lovely. However, this is her first try at most of this music and it shows: performances are all about voice and not about words or characterization. For those who love the voice alone. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
A delight.......2000-05-25
These French opera arias, sung by Frederica von Stade, my favorite mezzo-soprano, were recorded early in her career, and they are a delight. They may not all show quite the expressiveness she developed later, but still there's that lovely mezzo voice, unlike any other and always a pleasure to hear.
The Supreme von Stade's Art.......1999-04-02
This CD shows the art of a great mezzo in a repertoire that she is better than many french opera singers!!!!
A beautiful performance.......1999-01-09
I really do not know why this CD was not released before. Here is Frederica Von Stade in peak form, singing near deffinitive versions of great French arias. Her voice is ideally fitted for the material. She has agility, range and a beautiful middle register, apart from great French diction. Highlights of the CD are "Enfin, je suis ici" from Massenet's Cendrillon, "Connais-tu le pays?" from Thomas' Mignon and the two Offenbach arias.
Frederica is my favorite singer, and this is my favorite........1998-11-16
Rich sensuous heartfealt songs by my favorite alto for many years, now on CD.

Customer Reviews:
First-rate, operetta-oriented performance.......2003-12-03
Jacques Offenbach, that exemplar of the lightness and gaiety on the surface of Louis Napoleon's empire, was born in Germany and spoke all his life with an ineradicable German accent. With the crushing Prussian victory of 1870 and the collapse of both Napoleon and his frivolous empire, the suddenly very foreign-seeming Herr Offenbach and his airy confectons were largely rejected by French audiences. Artistic and financial bankruptcy loomed. Offenbach redeemed himself with a successful tour of the United States and a burning ambition to do something better. And he did do something better. Even as he was dying, he created "Les Contes d'Hoffmann", the operatic masterpiece that no-one had ever believed he had in him.
"La Perichole" is a much earlier work. It is pure fluff, and one of the finest pieces of fluff ever put on stage. It involves a lustfully incompetent ruler of Peru, a cute pair of street entertainers, confusion about who is married to whom and a prison for recalcitrant husbands. Fluff unrelieved, and highly entertaining it is, too. (Unlikely as it may seem, there actually was a Perichole. She lived in Lima and was the mistress of the Viceroy of Peru. Her life was roughly contemporary with that of Beethoven. For some odd reason, her story is told in numerous pieces of mid-19th Century French literature and music.)
"La Perichole" is full of jolly, up-tempo tunes. At least one of them being so insidious that you find yourself humming or whistling it for days.
The question arises as to what sort of work this is. Is "La Perichole" an opera, an operetta or something else. Offenbach called each of his pre-Hoffmann stage works an "opera bouffe". Perhaps he meant not-quite-an-opera but more than an operetta. And if we take operetta to mean something like "The Student Prince" or "New Moon", he was quite right. The producers of this recording appear to regard "La Perichole" as an operetta and have assembled their cast accordingly. As such, they are excellent. The lead soprano and tenor have the bright, quicksilver sound that can only be produced by French throats. The villain is crotchety as only French comic villains can be. Indeed, the whole affair is as French as the Eifel Tower.
But I am inclined to think that operas are what are put on stage by opera companies and that is exactly what "La Perichole" is on this side of the Atlantic. However it may live as an operetta in France, over here I want to hear "La Perichole" as an opera. That being the case, I find both the tenor and the soprano to be just too bright and too light. In an ideal recording, I would wish for all the cast and particularly the two leads to have heftier sound and--just occasionally--a hint of dramatic darkness to better contrast with the true joy of the piece.
The sound of this 1960s recording is quite satisfactory on CD. As a budget-priced item, it lacks a libretto. Spoken dialogue has been included. It is my impression that the dialogue has been truncated but I do not have the text at hand to confirm it. In any case, there is not enough chatter to seriously discommode non-French-speaking listeners.
Whatever one may think of the singers or the packaging of this version of "La Perichole", the conducting is impeccable. But what on earth is Igor Markewitch, a great master of the Russian repertory, doing here? It seems about as likely as Toscanini heading up the band for "Annie Get Your Gun."
ONE OF THREE.......2002-08-22
This 1959 recording is not bad at all,but the two more recent versions have surpassed it.The dialogue will put off many listeners. This OFFENBACH operetta is among the six that are still being performed today. It has many delicious moments like the songs LE CONQUÉRANT DIT A LA JEUNE INDIENNE,O MON CHER AMANT and AH!QUEL DINER ,all often present in operetta anthologies. For all of those who don't know OFFENBACH,the best way to start is with THE WORLD OF OFFENBACH,a single cd that offers overtures and songs.

Dorumsgaard; who knew?.......2006-07-18
This is a great CD. I bought this CD specifically because I am a fan of Flicka. The CD opened a whole new world of music to me.
Dorumsgaard is an amazing composer who has, I've come to find out, over 20 volumes of beautiful music written for the voice and piano.
This has led me to other singers who have recorded his music.
This CD, however, stands alone as a great recital from top to bottom by Frederica von Stade.
Recitals should always be as thoughtful as this one.......2002-07-26
This is a great find, recorded live in Edinburgh in 1976. Hearing this outstanding concert, it is easy to understand why Von Stade has a reputation for intimate rapport with an audience; she has a beautiful instrument coupled with unusually sensitive interpretive skills, plus a sense of humor. The program is wide-ranging and includes two of her best-known encores, as well as a bonus track from Massenet's "Cendrillon," with full orchestra conducted by Mario Bernardi.
The Ives set, with its contrasts in color and mood, could be a microcosm for the entire recital. "Memories," with its two contrasting parts, seems to be the audience favorite, judging from the laughter and spontaneous applause. And "Tom Sails Away" quietly quotes a familiar George M. Cohan song with gentle poignancy. The Mahler set is gorgeously done, as well as a colorful Poulenc group. And Benjamin Britten's haunting chord changes put a set of British folk songs in a fresh new context.
The two encores could not be more different: a sly rendition of the "Tipsy Song" from Offenbach's La Périchole, followed by Carol Hall's touching "Jenny Rebecca," which von Stade apparently learned after she heard it sung by Barbra Streisand.
Two small quibbles that keep this from being a five-star recommendation: the piano sound is a bit metallic, in the way that some live recordings can be. This should not deter anyone from purchasing the disc, and is no reflection whatsoever on Martin Isepp, whose outstanding playing and instincts are crucial to this recital's success. Also, the booklet notes are a bit sloppily edited. The track numbers begin with 1 through 7, then skip to 9 - i.e., track 9 should be no. 8, track 10 is no. 9, and so on. And the last paragraph just ends, with an incomplete sentence dangling in the air. But this is minor; just take a nice pen and make the changes in the booklet yourself.
An unusually varied recital by one of the most poised and intelligent singers of our time.
Absolutely priceless early Von Stade not available elsewhere.......1999-08-28
What a wonderful concert! The material is varied and well-executed. Only three years into her international career, Miss Von Stade shows here exactly why she became an ovenight sensation in Europe. Most of the material in this concert has not previously been available on record. For Von Stade fans, this is an absolute MUST. For others, who obviously have never heard her, this is a glorious introduction to one of the world's finest singers.

Melodies to miraculously cure the moribund!!!.......2005-09-10
This 2000 3-CD set is a new edition of 2-CD set from 1990 titled "Opérette-Passion" from EMI France. By popular request, this adds to the already mirific collection a third CD containing some of the real glories of mid-XXth century French operettas: Maurice Chevalier, Tino Rossi, Fernandel, Alibert, Denise Duval, Luis Mariano, Georges Guétary, Bourvil, Mathé Altéry, Anny Cordy, Gise Mey and Armand Mestral. The selection is not exhaustive - that would be impossible* - but it does give any listener a major incentive to go ferretting for more of the same and the complete score of some of those genuine masterpieces of charm, humour and melody by Fancis Lopez or Maurice Yvain (among many others). For students of the French language and French opera, this collection is priceless as it gives a very good impression of what makes the French singing voice different from any other: something called "le phrasé", which unfortunately cannot be duplicated or improvised by international stars who simply dabble in French (except maybe the multi-talented Petula Clark). The recordings range from a restored antique of the 20's by Chevalier to full stereo scores from the 70's. The result is a package whose value will never be duplicated in discriminating choice, sound quality and sheer listening enjoyment. One very minor reservation : The dates of the recordings are not indicated as they were in the "Opérette-Passion" collection and the names of the lyricists are not given. The liner notes are composed of a 2-page essay which gives a general outlook of the evolution of French operetta (in French) but could have been a little longer, in my humble opinion. Details like this would have made the difference between a wonderful album for connoisseurs and a genuinely educational tool. * The operettas of Vincent Scotto are not represented. WARNING: These recordings are genuine treasures and are never available for long either individually of collectively, so buying this collection is an absolute no-brainer.
FROM OFFENBACH TO LOPEZ.......2002-08-16
Yesterday ,before going to sleep, you told your wife:I have nothing against FRENCH operettas, but what i want to hear is the songs ,not the dialogue that goes with the genre when you listen to complete works. Here in that collection, all the composers who created that particular form of light music are represented. It is so much more entertaining than traditional opera.Among the highlights are songs from OFFENBACH's works like LA BELLE HÉLENE and LA PÉRICHOLE;MESSENGER's VERONIQUE and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE;the famous LA VEUVE JOYEUSE that was successfull around the world;CHRISTINÉ's PHI PHI created the day after armistice in 1918.One of the pleasant surprize for me was hearing songs from LES MOUSQUETAIRES AU COUVENT and one from LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT (JADIS,LES ROIS)and another from CIBOULETTE(NOUS AVONS FAIT UN BEAU VOYAGE).MADY MESPLÉ,one of the best singers of the genre is featured on seven songs, and she is always a joy to hear in any role of the repertoire.FRANCIS LOPEZ, who is remembered as the last important composer is well honoured with eight selections with singers like BOURVIL,GEORGES GUÉTARY and LUIS MARIANO.Don't try to resist THE MERRY WIDOW ,she'll get to you one way or another.

Customer Reviews:
Good singing *if you like this repertoire*.......2004-08-03
I have always enjoyed Frederica von Stade's Offenbach recital, and was looking forward to von Otter, as she'd proved such a charmer in Kurt Weill and other popular music theatre works. Her liedersinging experience gives her the edge over many in this repertoire. Simply put, I can not imagine many singers doing a better job than von Otter in this repertoire. Perhaps the aria from "La Belle Helene" has a touch more pathos sung by Jessye Norman.
My problem is with the repertoire. If you know the music of Offenbach, then you know what you are getting. If you are unfamiliar with the French version of the Viennese Operetta, then it would be wise to listen to this disc first. I simply do not care much for it. Therefore the three stars. Advertising has claimed this to be "a revelation of Offenbach in all his many guises" but to me it was more of the same old Offenbach.
However, if you enjoy this music, this is an excellent choice. Also do not miss Susan Graham's disc of lighter French music.
Rare Offenbach Muisc is a Real Gem.......2004-03-29
Jacques Offenbach was a composer who was popular in his day, but his music was not taken all that seriously by more serious composers. After his death, much of his music went into obscurity. Some of the overtures to his operettas survived, as did LA BELLE HELENE and his opera THE TALES OF HOFFMAN, but to this day he is under performed to say the least. While some of his music was adapted for the ballet Gaite Parisienne, if we look at his musical output, all that is remembered of this composer is all relatively small. This is perhaps why this recording by Anne Sophie Von Otter and Les Musiciens du Louvre is such a goldmine.
The disc contains scenes from some Offenbach operettas such as LA BELLE HELENE, LA GRANDE DUCHESSE DE GEROLSTEIN, and LE PERICOLE as well as some of his lesser known works. While most of the music showcases Ms. Von Otter's talent, she is also accompanied by other soloists and a chorus, all of whom perform exceptionally well. Listeners are not only exposed to lesser known works of this composer, but also to the composer's many talents. When we listen to this music, it is not too much of a stretch to see how he could create the masterpiece of TALES OF HOFFMAN (yes, the barcarolle is included).
Certainly people who enjoy this recording will hope that there are revivals of other Offenbach operettas on stage and maybe studio recordings so this great composer can finally have his due.
Yet another frustrating CD booklet.......2004-02-24
Why do companies like DG always give us booklets in which
the order of works in the commentary in no way match the
order of the tracks on the CD??? It drives you crazy
trying to follow the CD -- when a new aria or whatever starts,
you spend ages trying to find comments on it in the booklet.
Other than that, good recording and has interesting bits of
lesser known Offenbach.
A Bright Voice, Delightful Music, and Hilarious Delivery.......2003-06-17
I'm a relative newcomer and amateur in opera. Right now, I particulary enjoy buying CDs of sopranos, and I decided to "try" Ms. Von Otter. Was I blown away. My favorite on this CD is the "Sextuor de l'Alphabet" (the Alphabet Sextet). I had to laugh the first time I heard this. I have a cursory grasp of French, and so caught a word hear or there. It was funny without the context. But after reading the English translation of the lyrics, my funny bone was tickled even more. This whole CD makes clear the reason that Offenbach was such a popular composer, a composer for the masses.
Anne Sofie von Otter has also found her way into my classical heart, and I intend to get to know her voice better. Her dramatic interpretation is wonderful, and could even be compared to Maria Callas' flair for drama.
I highly recommend this CD.

Delightful.......2001-03-12
La Pericole may well be Offenbach's most satisfying work. There is all the dazzle and wit that marks his operettas, but more real development of character and real emotion than in earlier pieces. It is given a riveting presentation in this recording. Crespin and Vanzo are perfectly matched - their love is more convincing that in most opera - and Crespin especially is a pure delight. Jules Bastin delivers his buffoon's role with penache. The whole production is infused with a true Gallic feel.
The producers' solution to the problem of spoken dialogue and continuity of plot, which arises in operetta (and Singspiel), is I think almost ideal. The libretto contains fairly detailed descriptions of the action and words (though not the words themselves) but these are not spoken in the performance. This means that on repeated listenings one does not have to wait while the dialogue, with which one is familiar and often is not very interesting, is gone through, while having the development at the tips of one's fingers.
All together, a highly satisfactory set.
Vanzo & Crespin - Wonderful!.......2000-12-12
Offenbach wrote La Perichole just in his transition from his favorite genres operetta and parodies of Grand Opera, to writing 'serious' opera himself (Les contes d'Hoffman), and this can be heard throughout the score. There's still a lot of easy, lovely, tuneful music, and generous parts of humor, for example the role of Don Andres is a caricature of Napoleon the 3rd . But what's new is the more 'true' characterization of the lover's (Perichole & Piquillo) trouble, of which maybe the farewell (O mon cher amant) from la Perichole to Piquillo is the most 'serious' - yet not missing Offenbach's lovely sense for melody. The changes from 'the old' style to 'the new' style are sometimes abrupt, showing that Offenbach yet wasn't the perfect 'dramatizer' of serious moodes - but that's easily forgotten when listening to the beautiful music, and there's PLENTY of it to be found here, that stretches from ridicolous trios to mournful arias.
Maybe hard to record such an operetta / light french opera? If leaving the above mentioned details about the score aside - this is an excellent recording. All three leading roles are sung in exceptionally stylish french, with it's use of slight portamento and easy, sensual and heady tone. Crespin and Vanzo, the latter one of the most under-recorded lyrical tenors of his time, are as beautifully sounding as any soprano & tenor can get, and their 'acting' is good too. They might sound a little too old for their parts, but that's no great problems since they match eachother very well. Bastin as Don Andres is wonderfully pathetic and warm-sounding. All minor roles are well made as well, especially Besancon and Guige as the two notaries are great fun.
Lombard gives great support to the singers, and oomph to the music. The orchestra is really good and french sounding, the choruses are clearly audible (unfortunately quite rare in opera on record) and the sound quality is superb. The only negative thing to say about the recording is that all dialog has been cut, and the narrator of the original LP-version is also omitted. But sinces the libretto is included and the text that the narrator on the LP read is put in at the right places, it's no great deal to follow the plot.
The lover of Offenbach's operettas won't be disappointed, yet maybe a little surprised, and those of you who's found those operettas a little too light probably also will be positively surprised. Simply great!
