Taheke: 20th Century Masterpieces for Flute and Harp
Editorial Reviews
David Oliver, Pan, December 2004
[A] wonderful disc, and an excellent addition to the flute and harp discography...a very exciting and forward-thinking combination.
Album Description
"
perfectly attuned to each other and to the music." (Seattle Times) Heidi Krutzen and Lorna McGhee are re-envisioning the traditional flute and harp duo. With the release of Tâheke, the duo explores the full expressive capabilities of their instruments through the far reaching repertoire for harp and flute from 20th century composers. Works by Debussy, Lutoslawski, Damase, Schaposhnikov, Andriessen, Piazzolla, and Handel, as transcribed by Marcel Grandjany, present a richness of sound, kaleidoscopic colours and dynamic range rarely heard from the flute and harp. The title track by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr evokes "the French impressionism associated with those instruments while maintaining a contemporary edge." (Georgia Straight) Heidi and Lornas fresh approach extends beyond interpretation to the commissioning of new works each year as part of a vibrant musical continuum.
