A Great Compilation.......2005-03-21
This CD represents a reissue of three excellent recordings, under the baton of the legendary Leonard Bernstein, at a super-budget price. Two of them deserve a wider audience; the third is one of the world's most famous compositions.
If you have not heard Harris' third symphony, run - don't walk - to pick up this recording. This one-movement masterpiece was once heralded as the greatest American composition of the 20th century - and while it is not heard quite as often today, it will take only one listen to understand why it is so well loved. This recording features Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic, in the second of two recordings he made of this work.
The William Schuman symphony is another example of a celebrated piece (and composer) that is not as instantly recognized today as in the mid-20th century. This is his most famous and accessible work - if you like Copland, you'll love this. Again, this is Bernstein and the NYP from the late 80s.
Finally, the world-famous Adagio which needs no introduction, recorded by Lenny and the LA Philharmonic in a wrenching interpretation - one of the very best.
All of these compositions represent the flowering of American symphonic music that occurred in the middle of the last century, much of which (with a few exceptions such as the Adagio) has fallen into shameful neglect. Don't hesitate to pick up this CD, it will serve as an excellent introduction to some incredible music. As a next step, check out the "American Classics" serices from Naxos - budget editions of near-forgotten American traditionalist composers that will completely amaze you.

Customer Reviews:
Some truly outstanding performances.......2004-07-11
This two CD set from Deutsche Grammophon does as it states: it offers some of the greatest tenors of our time in some truly outstanding performances. Thirty-seven arias all told, take a little getting used to as most "all tenor" recordings do. But overall it's a worthy and worthwhile effort. As those who read these reviews know I have a clear preference for CDs that have and maintain a theme throughout, so when I sit down to listen I don't have to keep the clicker nearby. Here, because the CD's represent a collection of favorites, the emphasis also has to be on consistency of musical reproduction, and with the exception of one or two songs, the consistency in the latter regard is good throughout. So, on these two criteria: theme and sound quality, "Masters" gets high grades. As far as selection goes, I might have suggested a change or two, but only one or two. The tenor voice can grate and on occasion it does just that. Still, there are more standouts than drawbacks: Pavarotti's "Le camarade est amoureux" from Donizetti's "La fille du regiment", for its rich, rousing chorus and full orchestration; Jose Carreras "Ombra mai fu" from Handel's "Serse" for its soulful melody - and there are many more. I had to listen to this CD three or four times before writing this review because I didn't want to miss what was occurring here, and I'm glad I did. It grows on you and stands as a truly remarkable assemblage of some powerful, moving music. These are the strengths of this set and why I would recommend it. There are some curiously abrupt endings (4 fade-outs) on side two - maybe the producers were counting minutes and realized that some songs just had to be cut - bad idea. These are noticeable and annoying, as in Juse Bjorling's "Ingemisco" in Verdi's "Requiem" and Carlo Bergonzi's "Come un bel di di maggio" from Giordano's "Andrea Chenier" and at least two more. Where did the endings go? Lastly, a personal recommendation on when best to listen to this set: no kids, no phone calls, no group discussions. I took it in the car for a few rides and then after I got used to it moved indoors -- and now listen to it when I am sitting and relaxing. I recommend it. (PJW)
Do-Re-Me-WOW!.......2004-05-15
This is a fantastic new collection of different classical music styles, languages, and singers. The production quality is excellent. If you are interested in singing or love opera then you would probably enjoy this CD. You may find some excellent singers you haven't been exposed to. I can't wait until they release Bass, Alto & Soprano.

More interesting (and--predictably--less mechanical) than his piano rolls, Gershwin Performs Gershwin showcases the Gershwin-conducted rehearsal sessions for Second Rhapsody and Porgy and Bess along with two Gershwin radio specials recorded in the early '30s titled Music by Gershwin. These are period pieces, for sure--the sound is shoddy, and the radio spots' commercials are as entrancing as the music that's being played. But, yes, that is Gershwin conducting and playing piano, and this is as close as we'll get to hearing these familiar tunes being played the way he wanted them. --Jason Verlinde

Robert Beaser has arranged eight folksongs from the American South for flute and guitar--actually, for the performers who play them on this disc. His treatments vary from simple settings to more complex elaborations, but they are always done with the kind of respect for his material that stamps him as an American Bartók. This is a truly lovely cycle, supplemented on the CD by such congenial material as Stephen Foster songs and MacDowell Woodland Sketches, all arranged by Eliot Fisk. Paula Robison and Fisk are both outstanding virtuosi on their instruments, and they have played together enough so that their teamwork is impeccable. This disc isn't challenging listening but it is very satisfying. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Mountain Songs Magic.......2001-07-30
This is music for my soul. Paula and Eliot could not have changed a note or an inflection. I first heard these songs in the early 90's and have never forgotten. Flute and Guitar and 'American' music are right here. I am so happy to have found it on CD now that I search the net. As a flutist - I recognize technique and heart - and Paula has them. No one should miss this!

Historically fascinating, if musically lacking.......2000-08-09
This CD may not contain musical masterpieces, but as a recording it is of enormous musical interest, particularly because of its casting in the central work, Blitzstein's Airborne Symphony.
People who have seen the movie "Cradle Will Rock" know that Orson Welles had worked with Blitzstein many years previous on the latter's anti-fascist musical. Thus, his appearance as narrator of Blitzstein's Airborne Symphony many years later does not appear to be so much of a surprise.
Welles's performance is histrionic at times, to be sure, yet it's not entirely inappropriate to the spirit of the music, which is intentionally bombastic. The music is decidedly uneven, with the final sections, starting with the "Ballad of the Bombadier," being the most enjoyable. Welles's grave, then manic, shouts of "Warning!" in the work's final bars have to be heard to be believed--you'll either come away terrified or laughing, depending on your temperament.
The other works are more or less fillers to the main work--competently performed and recorded, but nothing particularly exciting. All in all, though, this disc is of interest to afficionados of American music, and all those eager to learn more about one of the more unusual artistic collaborations of the twentieth century.

This is one of the finest discs of Latin American orchestral music that you're ever likely to hear. The real discovery is Orbon's Tres Versiones Sinfonicas, a stunning three-movement suite that sounds a bit like Copland but with a more highly developed sense of form. If the first movement doesn't blow you away, then nothing can. Turn it up very loud, and let it rip! The other works are all well-known (except Estevez's Venezuelan landscape poem), and it's safe to say that these performances match or surpass the best of previous versions. The Venezuelan orchestra is a world-class ensemble, and Dorian has captured them in sound of supreme naturalness. --David Hurwitz

Fabulous Music From Latin America.......2000-12-06
This is a wonderful collection of music conducted by the late Eduardo Mata. The remarkable vitality of Tres Versiones Sinfonicas of Obon is equally matched by the Bachiana Brasilera No. 2 by Villa-Lobos. The quiet, haunting beauty of Melodia en la Llano by Estevez is a nocturne that brings the prairie of the title to life. Finally, the Sinfonia India of Chavez is a marvelous mix of Indian themes in a classical form.
This is part of a series of Latin American music on Dorian. You cannot go wrong with this collection, particularly if the music of Villa-Lobos is of interest to you and you want to know more about the classical Latin American music.

Harrison is a true American original. During his long life, he's worked as a journalist, florist, calligrapher, dancer, and much else besides. He's one of several California based composers who looked to Oriental music for inspiration, and he's studied both Japanese and Korean traditional music. His symphony shows all of these inspirations, as well as his love of beautiful sounds, plangent melodies, exotic percussion sonorities, and structural simplicity. If you don't know his music, then you should acquire this disc, the Piano Concerto (also performed by Keith Jarrett), and the ballet Solstice without delay. You're in for a major treat. --David Hurwitz

A Fine Performance of Some Underheard Music.......2002-01-17
Although the music of Hovhaness is becoming more available, it is still relatively rare, and the music of Lou Harrison is very rare. On this disc, "The Mysterious Mountain" is the best known work, having been recorded now two other times that I know of. The other two works I had never heard. While buying music "in the dark", so to speak, can often lead to buyer's remorse, this CD has proved to be very satisfying over a period of years, despite a certain lack of warmth and spaciousness in the recording itself.
The "Mysterious Mountain" sounds very much like its title suggests, with modal oriental harmonies and melodic lines that may occasionally remind you of Biblical epics. At its heart though, is a monumental double fugue which routinely leaves me breathless and keeps thoughts of Hollywood shlock far away. "Lousadzak", with Keith Jarrett plying the piano keys at his virtuousic, improvisatory best, both seems to flow directly out of the symphony that precedes it, as well as from the unconscious. Harrison's symphony displays Asian influences as well, but a little more broadly than Hovhaness's work, running from the middle east all the way to Bali, at the same time, sounding thoroughly American. The three pieces work together very well, and all the music is very well played.
Hovaness-ok:The Great Lou Harrison.......1999-03-11
This is an interesting album by two perhaps lesser known American 20th Century composers, as opposed to Copland, Bernstein, or even Cage. The performance is quite good on all accounts. "Mysterious Mountain" sounds just like it probably should, new age. Which is not to say it is bad, but it does lack depth, avoiding great leaps in emotional output. More interesting is "Lousadzak" which almost takes on a perpetual motion character-it is very busy! Finest on this album is the "Elegiac" symphony of Lou Harrison, who is sure to still be standing when the rubble of 20th Century experimentalism is swept away. His symphony shows grace, breadth, and beauty, all of which is served justly by Davies and the orchestra.
