Album Description
Despite his versatility and exceptional achievements in different scientific fields, Borodin was a modest man and acknowledged himself as a dilettante in music; but it was his "hobby" that has made his name for posterity. Borodin's symphonies are among the earliest Russian compositions in this genre. They are not only of epic scale but also of epic character, which determines all elements of musical language and distinguishes Borodin's symphonies from symphonies of other Russian composers.

CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.
If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.
The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.
I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

EXCITING PERFORMANCES VINTAGE STEREO SOUND BUT NOT SACD.......2005-09-27
Despite whar Mr Richman says in his review below this five disc box set does NOT consist of hybrid SACD discs. They are all CDs - generously filled but still basic 16 bit discs. It may be that Mercury's parent company plans to release these discs singly as three channel SACDs but here you get the two channel mixes that originally appeared on LP and on the 1990s CD releases. It would have been great to hear them in three channel - Dorati's "Firebird" sounds magnificent on SACD - but this box is still a bargain. There's some low level hiss and the occasional tape clunk but these are small blemishes on some exciting late 50s and early 60s recordings that make most of today's offerings sound sterile and cautious. Dorati's Tchaikovsky is never winsome or self-pitying. As a masterly ballet conductor Dorati never ignores the lilt and sway of the composer's waltz-inspired lighter moments - but he and the orchestra (London Symphony and Minneapolis) really let rip for the exciting brass perorations. Try the finale of the "Little Russian" symphony, or "Francesca di Rimini", for some real sock-blowing sound! Even if you own other recordings of these popular works try to find a space on your shelf for Dorati and the inimitable Mercury sound.
Dorati's MLP Tchaikovsky Gems Are Back!.......2005-05-25
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing as SACD hybrids. Unfortunately, they are now being sold at full-price, despite a competing hybrid series on RCA/BMG being available at midline. In spite of the added expense, I hope this MLP reissue trend will continue, and maybe we'll even see a few items getting their CD debut.
This Tchaikovsky Symphony Cycle by the great Antal Dorati has always been one of my favorite MLP offerings. While a two-disc set of Symphonies 1-3 and a single title of the 4th continue to be available in their original CD incarnations, the CDs of Symphonies 5 & 6 have gone out-of-print recently. However, with this box set they are now deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the four 5CD box sets being reissued have been so reasonably priced. This Tchaikovsky set, and the ones of Dorati conducting Bartok, Paray conducting French music, and Hanson conducting a variety of American music, including his own compositions, have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

This CD only contains 30-60 second long snippets of each of the pieces. It could be a teaching tool but is not something you can just put on to listen. It does contain reference to popular TV and Film works that contain the music.

Best Borodin Symphony performances.......2007-03-21
These are performances wich I treasure since they were released as a 3 lp-box in the 70's. Tjeknavorian plays the music in a very sympathetic straightforward "classic" manner without the disturbing idiosyncraticies conductors like Gergiev (with Rotterdam Philharmonic) or Svetlanov (with USSR Symphony Orch.) like to bring in Borodin's music. The playing of the NPO is powerful and very disciplined. The recordings are of demonstration quality. It is a pity it is released as a single cd with just the symphonies. The original lp-release consisted also of the Polovetsian Dances, the Petit Suite, In the Steppes of Central Asia etc.
Still not to be missed!
Good, basic, and straight-forward.......2006-04-09
There is not a lot to be said about this CD accept that it is about time RCA put all three symphonies on a single CD.
These performances are taken from the deluxe three-record set that included all of Borodin's orchestral output. It was an excellent set at the time. Though, why RCA chose an unknown conductor conducting a studio/recording symphony orchestra for such a project is beyond me. Since they did, and since all that other music is out there, they could have packaged this as a budget two-CD set and include the rest (or most) of the performances that were on that three-record set.
As stated above, the interpretations are straight-forward presentations. Nothing particularly individual about them like one gets from Svetlanov. Fine, no-nonsense, performances. Just nothing that really jumps out and says buy me; other than the fact that you do get all three of Borodin's symphonies on one CD. That alone makes it a good value.

Borodin on a budget..........2007-01-20
For those on a budget this digital NAXOS entry of Borodin's 2.5 symphonies(the 3rd is unfinished)is a good value. Dabbling part time as a composer,
between reasearch and teaching chemistry. The Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev
and Glazunov influenced Borodin created symphonies particularly nationalistically Russian. His first symphony took 5 years to complete and was his first sustained exercise in composition. It is a mixed bag with elements of German tradition, with parts criticized as "second hand" Schumann and Berlioz. There is a touch of what was to come in his exotic unfinished opera "Prince Igor". Both Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov tweaked the work considerably. The second symphony took 7 years to complete coinciding with his work on "Prince Igor" It is thoroughly Russian in mood. It's content is from the same pen that made the "Polovtsian Dances" so novel and approachable. This being one of my favorite symphonies. The two movement third was constructed by Glazunov from sketches of what were to be string quartets with a slight influence of a theme originally to be used in "Prince Igor". On a whole it is of a gentle mood. The engineers give us full blooded sound and the performance lacks only the last degree of refinement.
Rewarding Listening.......2005-02-13
As with Tchaikovsky’s “Manfred” symphony as performed by the same orchestra, I am forced to assume that one of the “major” labels could probably have made an even better job of recording these works, the Naxos engineering being satisfactory but without the brilliance of some later productions. Stephen Gunzenhauser and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra give an enthusiastic rendition of Borodin’s three symphonies, although I sometimes had the feeling that they could have done more to uncover the structures behind the works. The first symphony surprises by not sounding particularly Russian, except for occasional reminiscences of “In the Steppes of Central Asia” or the overture to “Prince Igor”. The second is much more Russian in flavor, but without in any way being “folkloristic”. The third symphony was in quite an early stage of conception at Borodin’s untimely death, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s pupil Glazunov “completed” it, using both piano and string quartet sketches by Borodin and his own memory, so that in the end you cannot really say what is Borodin and what is Glazunov. At all events, rewarding listening – and thanks to Naxos for venturing beyond the narrow limits of the normal concert repertoire.
Note written some time later: I have just heard the recording of these symphonies with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra directed by Neemi Järvi on Deutsche Grammophon. And I was right: the majors CAN do it better. There is a clarity and finesse here that the Gunzenhauser, good though it is, lacks.

A good friend of mine allowed me to borrow and listen to this CD. Borodin is one of my absolute favorite Russian composers, so I try to listen to as many different recordings of his symphonies as possible.
To be perfectly honest, this CD holds up fairly well to the competition. Stephen Gunzenhauser and his Czech orchestra give very admirable, heartfelt performances of these great works. They play well in tune, are rhythmically coordinated, and are balanced well with one another. Gunzenhauser and the Slovak orchestra give very good performances of all three symphonies.
However, due to some stiff competition, there are better recordings of these works with greater sonic output, better technical facility, and a greater sense of romanticism, contrast, and soul. Examples of this include the great budget recording of the Second Symphony by Ole Schmidt, Evgeny Svetlanov's recordings of these works, and (especially) the Neeme Jarvi box set of the Borodin symphonies, "In the Steppes of Central Asia," the "Petite Suite," and the famous Romance from Borodin's Second String Quartet.
This said, you cannot beat these performances of the three Borodin Symphonies for this price. There is no comparison in the budget bracket. Plus, you get all the symphonies on only one CD. If you just want an introduction to the Borodin symphonies or want to supplement your existing collection, I recommend this CD without reservations. However, if you want the best performances available for quite a bit more money (and searching!), I recommend the Jarvi set.

These two admirably played budget discs conveniently gather the complete orchestral music of Borodin, and if you want any of it, you might as well have it all. The major works here are the Second Symphony, the Polovstian Dances from the opera Prince Igor, and the lovely tone poem In the Steppes of Central Asia. The "Notturno" is actually an arrangement of the famous slow movement from the Second String Quartet, while the Third Symphony, as with so much of Borodin's music, was destined to remain incomplete. Andrew Davis--not usually a conductor to set your pulse racing--conducts with genuine flair. --David Hurwitz

Outstanding classical music.......2006-08-29
Of the all the great Russian musicians, Alexander Borodin is probably one of the least well known. Composing at the end of the 19th century, his name is not as well known as Tchaikovsky, Rubenstein, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, and Glazunov; maybe due to his lack of ballets or not having been the head of a major music school. Yet his music is every bit as melodic and beautiful. This multi-CD set contains possibly the best music composed by this genuis. COntaining all three of his symphonies, along with his Steppes in Central Asia and several other works, the music is very melodic, dramatic, evocative and rhythmic. Following in the footsteps of the great Russian Romanticism, this is some of the best classical music out there. The orchestration on these CD's are also wonderful, and the sound quality is flawless. I highly recommend this set to any classical music fan.
Perfect Borodin sampler..........2000-06-18
This CD has all of the great Borodin works, and unless you're really into Borodin, this should be the only CD you should have to buy. The Polovtsian dances was done how it should be. Of course then again would the New York Philharmoninc disappoint you? Steppes in Central Asia was so peacful and lovely, done ow it should be too. The Third Symphony, which I had never heard before, was surprisingly good! The First Symphony obviously wasn't completely Borodin's own; and after reading the booklet, I found this was true. Second Symphony was typical. I liked it and thought it was also a good recording. What's more...the CD is cheap...I mean 2 CDs! What's there not to like! Like most CDs, it's not perfect but it's pretty darn close.

nice but same old stuff.......2007-03-18
I was looking for seomthing new to listen to during massage, and I like classic music. What I realized when I listened to this and several more like it, is that it is all kind of boring. The reason I suppose is because there were only a limited number of composers in the last couple of centures, especially 17th through 19th centuries, so we've all heard it all before...
Nevertheless, this is a nice CD, very pleasant versions of classic works.
