Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust is a large-scaled oratorio that differs from most settings of the great poem by including the philosophical Part II as well as the undoing of Faust and Gretchen at the hands of Mephistopheles that is Part I. It is typical of Schumann's inability to write truly theatrical music that there is little difference between the music he provides for dramatic action and for philosophical reflection. On the other hand, the calm flow of often-gorgeous music that characterizes this two-hour score generates its own substantial impression. Herreweghe's period-instrument orchestra provides a perfectly balanced background for the fine singers, who do not have to strain to be heard. His performance is seamlessly paced and beautifully recorded. --Paul Turok
