As the valuable introductory essay by Cliff Eisen points out, the starting-point for Mozart's earliest keyboard concertos are works by German composers whom Leopold Mozart mentions as being popular in Paris in the mid 1760s: Schobert, Eckard and Honauer – to which list Leopold might have added Raupach, another prominent German-born composer in Paris at that time. Mozart's earliest concertos are all pasticcios, orchestrations (at times extensive recompositions) of keyboard sonata movements (just one of the 12 models may be a Mozart original; and one is by C. P. E. Bach). They date from spring and summer 1767, when the composer was 11 – though, as much of the handwriting indicates, his father was deeply involved in the composition, or at the very least in the committing to paper, of these fascinating pieces.A second essay in the insert booklet is an equally interesting note on performance and improvisation written by the soloist, Robert Levin, who here plays a clean-toned and attractive double-manual harpsichord constructed in 1997 by Peter Bravington after models by Goermans (Paris, 1764) and Taskin (Paris, 1784). Although there have been delightful recordings of these works on fortepiano (notably by Ingrid Haebler, with Eduard Melkus and his Vienna Capella Academica), and on a modern concert grand (here I think particularly of Murray Perahia and his affectionate, unfussy and eminently stylish performances with the ECO), they are especially well suited to the harpsichord, here accompanied in ideal balance by two dozen musicians of the Academy of Ancient Music, under Christopher Hogwood's spirited and perceptive direction, and with fine recorded quality. The only doubt I have concerns the sometimes almost frenetically busy realization of the keyboard part, for instance in the Andante staccato of K39 in B flat. In general, there is a refreshing spring to the rhythms as well as refinement, wit and – in the spontaneity of Levin's embellishments and cadenzas – a return to the spirit of a more adventurous age. I just bought this cd yesterday and i love it already. as a trumpeter, i can really enjoy and appreciate the music they perform. i was quite intrigued hearing canon in D (currently playing right now on my stereo), et al.

If you are to buy only 1 CD for Brass Enemble, Get this! It captured the BEST of the Candian Brass (one of the top brass enemble in the world). It has all the nice tunes, e.g. Four Seasons, Cannon in D, etc. Strongly recommended.

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

I still consider myself a rock music fan, but received this CD/album as a Christmas gift in 1995, and have listened to it in my car countless times. It contains a very nice assortment of familiar arrangements performed brillantly by various orchestras. Even if the title doesn't ring a bell, chances are you've heard these songs before and can connect with them. My wife's favorite is "Canon" (she's a diehard romantic) and I'm partial to "Fanfare" (Masterpiece Theater's old theme). Guaranteed to mellow you out while stuck in rush-hour traffic.

For those of us who think we would like classical music but have no idea where to start or what to buy, this is a good CD. I now have a small classical music library which gives me a great deal of pleasure, but this was one of my first selections. I still enjoy it. I recommend it to friends who are beginning to enjoy classical music and need a place to start.

    One who doesn't have this CD, could be well informed about the CD from Peter Branscombe's review, though, I would like to add my personal impression, hopping that it will help potential buyer to buy this precious music.

    Let's go to the subject, now. I'd change that CD opens with Concerto No.3. It is so explosive in the "Allegro", beginning with underlined accord ("tam,tam, tam")- forte, which makes so big importance to the thematic material that follows. Then, it elaborates contrasting two themes, in Mozart's original manner being not less brilliant than any latter works. Then, the "Andante" bright, with a good, constant tempo and almost no development (a measure or two), just to let people take the breath before the final movement. The "Presto" is music of C.P.E Bach but elevated to the Mozart's genius. The orchestral introduction, which starts with a furious, upward passage, built in crescendo to the climax, makes the energized ambience before the cembalo takes up, playing the same role. It is fast and furious till the very end. Violins, lead by Andrew Manze are vivid and meticulously articulated, plus punctual timpani and trumpets, it all makes the theatrical ambience throughout. But, the most amazing are horns. They are so greatly amuseing that I got the impression that they really enjoyed their orchestral score made it to be their own solos- What a charming orchestra!

    The rest of the CD is pure Mozart, concertos not less worth than any other of his works. I really enjoy listening to this music.

    Oh!-I almost missed to mention the "Andante Staccato" of the Concerto No.2. In a way, it is a "Holly Relic", an endless music, latter seen in a "Andante" of Clavier-Concerto No.22 that I could indulge for hours repeating it again and again.
    I also honor cembalo, oboes and flutes for this remakrable music.

    Commonly called the "pasticcio concertos", these works date from 1767 and mostly consist of reworkings, arrangements, expansions, etc. of sonata movements by other composers (whose names will probably sound unfamiliar to most readers: Raupach, Honauer, Shobert, and even C. P. E. Bach), and their importance in Mozart's output, especially given the genius of his maturity concertos, is usually considered to be minimal; their overall atmosphere is a rather "style galant" one, and, as one might expect, quite a far call from the late Mozart. In spite of that, and in spite of Mozart being helped by his father Leopold in the arrangements, these concertos already show some of the young composer's qualities, especially in the sonata form developments (e. g. the minor modulations and some tone nuances which are absent in, let's say, C. P. E. Bach's concertos). Besides, they show an interesting chapter of the creation of the piano concerto as we know it (from its late Mozart and Beethoven archetypes). The (historically informed) performance by Robert Levin is outstandingly accurate and quite rightly centered on improvisation (the cadenzas are improvised, as are the embellishments); following documents about performances Mozart gave of these concertos, he plays on a harpsichord (Bavington modeled after a Goermans-Taskin) whose excellent sound can only be commended. As on most period performances, the harpsichord also gives a quasi-continuo role during the orchestral tuttis. As for the orchestra itself, Hogwood conducts his AAM with elegance, a great sense of colour, and most of all, a certain liveliness which (along with the soloist's talent) is probably the main element in this performance's success. (On a side note, I'd like to spend a few words to confute the anonymous reviewer from Austria: I do not agree with his views of Mozart as a piano composer, but that is a matter of personal taste, I guess; much more importantly, I dare praying the kind reader to consider the inconsistencies contained in his review, for as harpsichord keys are generally black, the term ivory is quite inappropriate to describe them. The very instrument he knows as piano is commonly called a harpsichord, clavecin, gravicembolo, etc.).

    Mozart, an absolutely wonderful musician, tries his best to apply his past genius from works like "The Magic Flute" or even the incredibly popular piece, "Ave Verum Corpus" to the beautiful instrument most refer to as the piano. His "best try" falls short of all expectations as he slides in and out of outrageous themes, incomprehensible modulations, and terribly futile cadences. Perhaps he should spend more of this time learning to play this beautiful instrument than writing pointless music intended to damage such beautiful ivories.
