I love this recording of Die Fledermaus. My father bought a copy on LP in 1952, and I have never been without one since. Anybody who wants to sample Viennese operetta should start here.

There is no finer performance of this operetta on records, period. Clemens Krauss' conducting is full of wit, verve, charm and optimism. With one exception (Julius Patzak, as Eisenstein) the 4 leads were in the full youthful bloom of their great careers.

Hilde Gueden and Wilma Lipp as Rosalinda and Adele, respectively are head and shoulders above their competition in beauty and distinctiveness of tone, deadly accuracy of coloratura all registers, brilliance of high notes, liveliness of declamation, and involvement in the comedy. You have not heard Rosalinda's Czardas or Adele's arias both brilliantly sung and fully acted vocally until you have heard this recording.

Anton Dermota is a wonderfully witty if understated Alfred, while Julius Patzak plays Eisenstein pretty much as a whiny straight man. The smaller parts, Orlovsky and Falke, and Franke, are passable. Not particularly funny, however.

None of the other available recordings has such a strong overall cast. The Karajan set may come close, and includes the gimmicky New Years' Eve "revue" with cameos stick in the middle of the second act. But this sort of thing rings phony when it's not a historical record of a live performance. I mean, any recording company can splice a bunch of irrelevant into the second act of Fledermaus.

Forget about digital sound, or even stereo. This is monaural, noticeably better than a 78-rpm recording, but in 1950 even Decca had not achieved the HI-FI wonders of the later 50's and 60's.
