Debussy:Preludes Volume 2
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Michelangeli was such a weird guy (he spent his life as a veritable recluse and protected his privacy with attack dogs) and made so few recordings that everything he did arouses interest if only by virtue of its scarcity. A lot of his interpretations came out sounding pretty strange, but in Debussy he was one of the supreme keyboard geniuses of our age and, as if sensing this natural affinity, he recorded a generous selection of the great French composer's piano works. Recorded ten years after his release of Book 1 of the Preludes, this set shows the same sensitively of touch, the same extraordinary clarity of texture, and the same almost frightening powers of concentration. Stunning. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:
what happened to p,pp and ppp and mystery?.......2006-07-14
I am a 58 year old professional orchestral musician, and I have played with the best: Gilels, Bachauer, Axe, Watts, Gelber,etc..
When I hear this Debussy recording, I keep waiting for QUIET and mystery, and don't get it. There is a lack of dynamic extreme, and it kills the music. I would rather plunk through these at my pedestrian pianist skills than listen to someone with chops and little imagination.
WONDERFUL SOUND.......2006-04-23
One man's view:
Something about Michelangeli's touch. It's smooth and graceful, but also confident and strong. A very "whole" sound. It just takes us! Highly recommended.
You can't always appeal to the deaf ears of critics.......2005-04-22
They say that "those who can't....teach." I think the sentence should end with "become critics." I wonder how closely critics really listen to a recording. I have the impression they put the cd on and take a shower, or use the washroom, or put the tv on at the same time, because some of the things they write are just plain rubbish. "I remember when so and so played this when I was 14 and I just thought it was miraculous. 43 years later I heard them again and the miracle was only verified....blah, blah blah." If you heard it before, It probably got better in you mind, the same way all memories do. If the first time you heard it was by someone else, that will always be the natural way to hear it. Guys, think before you write, because you're saying really silly things.
Michelangeli was a fantastic pianist and he has his own unique world. He was an aristocrat in music, and presented music in a similar fashion. ( Do all the critics reading this understand what I'm saying? Think for a couple of seconds before huffing and puffing.) This is essential listening and no other pianist can present music in so clear a texture in french music. This is his way and we are lucky to be able to hear it. That is the great thing about great pianists, they all sound different, so everyone can have their tastes satisfied.
Buy this for the sheer sake of its artistry. If you don't like it, sell it on ebay.
SHORT MEASURE, AND NOT HIS BEST.......2004-05-03
Much as I admire and love these wonderful pieces, I still have difficulty in restraining my giggles at the sheer Frenchness of some of the postscripts that the composer appended to them. When I read the inscription for no 7, for instance, `La terrasse des audiences du clair de lune', I pray for some muse with time on her hands to inspire me to `La plainte du berger qui a perdu ses moutons sous la pluie' or something of the kind.
That said, it is a sublime, superlative, piece of music, as are they all. I don't to this day have a really fixed notion of how they should be best played. However I had been mightily impressed by Michelangeli's accounts of book I of the preludes, as by his Children's Corner and Images, so it was high time to acquaint myself with his insights into book II. This recording seems to have been made in 1988, the year in which he was first taken ill from the heart condition that was to kill him seven years later, and whether for that reason or some other I have come away with the feeling that this disc is not all it might have been.
The best is saved for the end. Feux d'Artifice is truly remarkable, with the background figuration displaying the haughty uniqueness of touch that set Michelangeli apart when he was at his best. Michelangeli's Debussy in general was not along the lines of, say, Gieseking's or Richter's. It was not specially `impressionistic', the touch deployed was a big touch and the coloration was vivid to the point almost of being garish. Down the years my own benchmark has been an extraordinary live performance from Richter, showing aspects of that giant at his very greatest whether or not it can be deemed a safe recommendation. The difference between him and Michelangeli shows up most spectacularly in the first number, Brouillards. Richter's touch is a miracle of nebulous mistiness, as quiet as could be. By comparison M sounds rather matter-of-fact, and the impression persists through the first 11 pieces, except for La Puerta del Vino and General Lavine which I'm not sure Richter really understands. I'm inclined to say to other listeners `Don't just go off first impressions'. M had a different concept of Debussy entirely. Nevertheless the feeling that this is not, until no12, M at his most inspired is hard to shake off. Even in some purely technical respects such as the execution of trills M is not the out-of-this-world wonder that I know from other contexts.
It's tempting to say about Michelangeli that one has to take the smooth with the smooth. He was not exactly lavish in the amount of his playing he bequeathed to us, and I collect his work systematically for that very reason. When he was below his best the smoothness had a tendency to expressionlessness, and that tendency shows through just a very little here. It's not a disc I would part with, nor is anything else I have from him. Nonetheless when I want to remember M in the Debussy preludes it's La Cathedrale Engloutie and Le Vent sur la Plaine from book I that I tend to think of, from book II only Feux d'Artifice.
The recorded quality is perfectly satisfactory, there is a rather run-of-the-mill liner note, but a cd containing less than 40 minutes' playing would have to be very exceptional indeed for me to give it a higher rating, and for the reasons I've given this disc doesn't seem to me quite that.
Michelangeli's wizardry: the definitive Debussy!,.......2004-02-06
Two words to describe Debussy played by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli: infinite and inimitable! If possible get the double cd with Preludes 1 & 2 , Images 1 & 2 and Children's Corner.

Album Description
What makes music Romantic? Like beauty, Romanticism is in the eye or ear of the beholder. As a musical movement, it is generally associated with 19th century Europe, but
The Romantic Approach, Volume One was a collection of 20th century American works, all of which had some fairly obvious Romantic elements. That first recording may have surprised listeners who felt that contemporary America has produced very little Romantic art.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Two, on the other hand, includes the very heart of the Romantic literature. Of all the countries in the world, France and Italy have been those most associated with things romantic; even the sounds of their languages are musical, and that songlike quality has certainly colored much of the music (classical or otherwise) of these two countries.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Two, contains music by some of the greatest French and Italian Romantics: Puccini, Faure' Debussy, Respighi, and numerous others are included. Many of them will be familiar to opera lovers, and that is probably not a coincidence. Opera means high drama, star-crossed lovers, emotions writ large upon a grand stage - the very essence of Romanticism already existed in the opera world, which was a central part of the musical life of France and Italy.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Two, reflects this: beautiful melodies from two opera favorites, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Massenet's Thais, are included; and three of the greatest operatic composers, Rossini, Puccini, and Verdi, are all represented by typically soulful instrumental works. But unjustly neglected masterpieces from gifted French and Italian composers Jean Francaix and Guiseppe Martucci are included as well, and the collection is rounded out with emotional, evocative works by Maurice Ravel and Erik Satie.
Like the earlier volume, this collection is centered around the sounds of the instrumental family that is most often associated with Romantic music: the strings. Whether it is singing cellos, soaring violins, or sighing mandolins, the instruments of the string family have an uncanny ability (in the right hands) to express a full range of emotion, and some of the most Romantic music ever written has the sounds of a string quartet or a full string orchestra at its heart.

Customer Reviews:
Too beautiful for words.......2004-05-25
If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.
Guitar History.......2004-02-15
Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !
Best deal there is!.......2002-05-06
If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.
Most excellent.......2001-08-18
This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.
Julian Bream, The Genius.......1999-01-09
Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
