For sheer energy and exuberance--to say nothing of the warmth they project in this performance and the elegance that marks their playing throughout--Cho-Liang Lin and Jaime Laredo have an unusually close and solid partnership. Because both are such strong, outgoing musicians, they are unusually interesting as well. The detail-work is exceptionally fine, the ensemble breathtakingly clean. Raymond Leppard and the English Chamber Orchestra support the effort with playing of real symphonic weight, giving a big-boned, muscular account of the score, yet one that is wonderfully suave. The recording is vivid and packs an extraordinary punch, even if it is a little bass-heavy. --Ted Libbey

CONCERTED EFFORT.......2006-08-31

Why is Mozart's great double concerto for violin and viola called `Sinfonia Concertante'? I am only assuming provisionally that Mozart himself used the term - his voluble correspondence never (so far as I know) refers to the work. This is now the second performance of it in my collection, the first being a Supraphon production from 1962 issued on a Classics for Pleasure LP with Suk and Skampa as soloists. I betook myself to the oracles of Volker Scherliess (here) and W A Chislett (CfP) for guidance regarding the work's title but came away none the wiser. Chislett plays the hoary old game of telling us something true but irrelevant, namely that the title `sinfonia concertante' was applied to works harking back to the old concerto grosso style, with a `concertino' group of soloists balanced against the main band. True enough elsewhere, completely irrelevant here, so knickers to Chislett. Scherliess takes the route of veiled hints `a symphonically constructed work (similar but not identical in form to the concerto)'. Neither symphonic in any sense say I, and neither similar nor `identical' to a concerto, but simply that -- a concerto, just like Mozart's piano concertos. Mozart himself sees to the cadenzas just as Hummel does in his own double concerto for violin and piano, and no doubt for the same reason, namely that leaving two soloists to improvise would have been courting disaster.

We have here a live performance from 1982 at the Huberman festival in Israel. The applause is suppressed and the playing is as polished as in any studio account, but there is the sense of spontaneity that nearly always gives a special feel to live music. Speeds are fairly normal: the opening allegro maestoso has the proper majesty in its marching rhythm, the andante has the right soulfulness and sadness about it. The final `presto' is not particularly fast, a good deal more measured than the way Suk and Skampa take it, but lively, spirited and elegant. This being Mozart and not Haydn, I like it well enough like this. Zukerman takes the viola part, as it is thought Mozart did at the work's premiere, and he performs it as to the instrument born, just as Nigel Kennedy does in Walton's viola concerto or as Menuhin does in the 6th Brandenburg in his Bath Festival set.

The `Concertone' is highly welcome, being as rarely performed as it is. This is really a work that retains suggestions of the concerto grosso, although unmistakably late 18th century, after Haydn had transformed the idiom of instrumental music from being purely a process of development into one in which events and contrasts take place. As well as the two violins, there is a solo oboe and a solo cello, these parts being fully as prominent as those for the fiddles. It is an early piece and not the greatest Mozart by any means, but Mozart had a star on his brow from his most juvenile efforts onwards. As in the great work that comes with it here, the contribution of everyone is top-class. I was intrigued as to how the artists would interpret the tempo indication on the last movement `Tempo di Menuetto. Vivace.' On the face of it these instructions look mutually contradictory, as `tempo di' normally indicates a slowish minuet, but it is all convincing enough as done here, and certainly I have no better suggestions.

The liner note, or at least the one that comes with the disc in England, is journeyman stuff, but one is used to that. The recorded quality is very good without being exactly spectacular, and one would not be aware of the presence of an audience in any unwelcome ways. All very recommendable indeed, not least to those previously unfamiliar with the concertone.

Hearing the Enjoyment.......2004-04-27

This recording was probably the best at the time of its release and some time after, and one of the other reviews is right in that it contains a more "live" sound than would be some others with much studio editing. Perlman gives his signature warm sound, and Zuckerman is probably the most notable violinist to also champion the viola. One hears the enjoyment in the music, which is what makes Perlman in particular so special as a musician. I give it 4, not 5 stars, though, because the last star must be reserved for the much newer recordings of Augustin Dumay/Viktoria Hagen/Salzburg (for one of the best interpretations of Mozart ever) and that of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (for a better understanding of how the work is as symphonic as it is concertizing).

Plus Ultra.......2004-03-24

Guranteed to do two things. First, this disk will transform all skeptics into Mozart devotees. Second, it will be one of your favorite most frequently played disks. The Israel Philharmonic show with authority why it is one of the world' top five. Perlman and Zuckerman bring out the best in one another. Hence, success is assured.

Legendary Violinists Performing.......2000-09-05

Perlman and Zuckerman are great violinists. Their rendition of the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Orchestra is magnificent. The Allegro Maestoso first movement is delightful and lively. The rest of the slower movements are graceful and charming. If you are a fan of Mozart, you will love this cd. Not like the Violin Concertos because the Concertante is more of a lighter and less "complex " work, but still a masterpiece. It is garuanteed to be of your liking. It is in my opinion, along with the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto the greatest work for violin ever to be created. I could be wrong. There are so many violin works that are brilliant but the Sinfonia concertante is one of them.

Spectacular live performance.......1999-12-02

Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante is one of his most beautiful works, and here it gets one of the most remarkable performances I've ever heard. It has the sort of joy and expressiveness you can only find in a live performance. But there's a caveat: you have to like your Mozart big-orchestra and romantic. If you don't (and I don't, but I appreciate the musicianship here), you'll find yourself wondering what the piece really sounds like. If you do, this disc has absolutely no peer.

Stern + Szell = Sensational!.......2003-09-23

Volume 3 of violinist Isaac Stern's "A Life in Music" series is (appropriately) a three-disc set featuring Mozart's five Violin Concertos, and other orchestral works for the instrument. This collection was originally issued in Sony's "Mozart - Legendary Interpretations" series and fortunately it has been reissued here. (Note to Sony - follow suit and reissue the rest of Szell's Symphonies and Ormandy's Wind Concertos!) As indicated above, three different men -- George Szell, Alexander Schneider and Daniel Barenboim -- conduct the works on this disc. The Szell performances date from the early 1960s -- Concertos Nos. 1 & 3 are from January 1961 while No. 5 is from April 1963. The Barenboim recordings are from 1971 (Sinfonia Concertante K364) and 1973 (Concertone K190). Finally, the Schneider accounts -- Concertos Nos. 2 & 4, Adagio K261 and Rondo K373 -- are all from February 1976. All are in stereo. It is my opinion that these performances, particularly those with Szell, are the best available, and the only other set comparable is the Grumiaux/Davis on Philips (see my review). Of course, if you don't want to buy 3 CDs worth of Mozart Violin works, you can always buy the Sony "Great Performances" title featuring the very same recordings of Concertos Nos. 4 & 5.

From a violist's point of view..........2006-05-04

This CD is by no means "stellar". I've heard countless recordings, and I've played both solo parts (preferring the viola, of course). The orchestra is not together in a few places; in particular, the opening section of the first movement where the horns have a couple of notes that are supposed to be played in unison --- and they're not. The viola, as is almost always the case, is under-miked most of the time, and there are at least two places in the solo parts where the viola and violin should be tighter than they are.

The recording is OK - but not more. I would buy it if it was on sale, but not at full price. If you want a REAL 5-star performance, pick up the one with Perlman and Zuckerman. It would be hard to argue that it's not the best - because it is.

One of Mozart's Best Works.......2006-04-07

The playing on this CD is excellent. Sinfonia Concertante itself is one of Mozart's absolute best works in my opinion. One of my very favorite CDs.

wonderfully done.......2005-10-19

This is a great recording. The sound quality is fantastic and the playing is as well. Particularly the wonderful tone of the soloists and the way they interact in the music is really great. In the slow movement the combination of the two soloists soaring over beautifully reproduced strings is especially enjoyable. Highly recommended and nearly essential.

Finest performance of Sinfonia Concertante available........2002-09-08

Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola, and orchestra is one of his greatest masterpieces. Of the many performances I've heard of this great composition, this is the most outstanding. Cho-Liang Lin is one of the finest violinists currently performing -- with impeccable technique and intonation, a beautiful tone, and artistic sensitivity. Jaime Loredo -- an award winning violinist -- is also an outstanding violist. Unfortunately, in many performances of the Sinfonia Concertante the violist defers to a star violinist, thereby weakening the equality that Mozart gave the two instruments. Not so in this recording: Lin and Loredo play together superbly, with both instruments clearly equal yet beautifully interwoven. The English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Raymond Leppard, interacts with Lin and Loredo impeccably. The lovely concertone for two violins is equally well performed and serves as a welcome bonus. If you love Mozart -- or just great string playing -- please get this outstanding CD while it's still available.

Superb recording and performance of Sinfonia Concertante.......2001-07-30

From the very first bars of the opening movement of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for viola, violin and orchestra, it is immediately clear this is no routine performance. The interplay between the soloists has an organic presence that brings this music to bloom in a manner usually only experienced in a live performance. The communication among the soloists and orchestra is so far advanced and detailed I found myself completely and absolutely absorbed in the music. This is one of those very rare and special sessions that will cause one to lose track of time and become entranced with the delicate and subtle interplay of this charming and wonderful music by Mozart. The disc is filled up with a very good performance of the Concertone for two violins and orchestra. This is not nearly as absorbing as the first work, but the material isn't as inspired either. Still this is definitely a disc to go for. The sound is excellent, the playing absolutely top drawer, and the very special achievement of the Sinfonia Concertante is reason enough to own this disc.

Not what I expected..........2006-02-04

...BETTER! After having received numerous recently selections that were a disappointment, this was a welcomed master works collection!

Superbly recorded and arranged, the sound quality is excellent. If you are a mozart fan or want to be a mozart fan, don't pass this set up. What may seem a little pricey is actually a little over a dollar a disk making this set an exceptional value.

Many gems in here. Each disc is in a decent cardboard sleeve and all are housed in a very study and easy to access slip case. Overall the packaging design is wonderful and you will be surprised just how little space a 40 cd collection will take up.

But I can not praise the sound recording quality enough. A wonderful mix of string quartets, symphonies and opera including a stunning rendition and recording of Figaro in 3 parts.

A praiseworthy set from a beginning collector.
