The two works on this disc are from 1940, the year when Hindemith was finally persuaded by various American friends to leave war-torn Europe. Hindemith was also ready to leave his experiments of youth behind. These works are from that early mature period. The Concerto for Cello and Orchestra is a masterful balance of harmonic forces at work between the solo instrument and the orchestra. Hindemith's Theme and Four Variations The Four Temperaments began life as a ballet, but ended up as suite for solo piano and strings. Though not a concerto, it still gives the soloist enough to do. --Paul Cook

A wonderful collection of music spanning from the Baroque to the Modern and so Affordable. Each CD is in a full size jewel-case with beautiful cover art - paintings of Renaissance-era angels in muted, slightly reflective, metal-tone inks - all within a box that ties them all together. There are no liner notes in the booklet, just track listings, but the music speaks for itself. 5 out of 5 stars Immaculate and Soulful Performances of Hindemith by Brett Dean.......2006-10-17

Brett Dean (born 1961 in Brisbane, Australia) is beginning to be a much talked about name in the music world. Long established as a fine violist (he was a violist with the Berlin Philharmonic for fifteen years) both as an ensemble member and soloist, Dean is spending more time composing these days than playing. His recent appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic joined the two ventures as soloist/composer with his own Viola Concerto, a work of stunning beauty that hopefully will find its way onto a CD soon.

Meanwhile this recording of music by Paul Hindemith is one of the more satisfying collections of works for any instrument but for the viola in particular. Dean is joined by the Brisbane Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Werner Andreas Albert in four of Hindemith's most beautiful compositions: 'Kammermusik No.5, for viola & orchestra', 'Konzertmusik for viola & large chamber orchestra', 'Der Schwanendreher, concerto for viola & small orchestra', and the extraordinarily moving 'Trauermusik for viola and string orchestra. Dean's liquid technique serves him well in both the treacherous passages of these works as well as the languid portions, making the viola sound more like a small cello.

For a collection of works too infrequently heard this is a recording that will please listeners whose spectrum of appreciation for many music periods is large. Brett Dean is a fine musician, in every sense of the term. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 06

This was an amazing recording!!! Mr. Dean tone is flawless, and the recording of Trauermusik is incredible!!! Such rich, emotional playing! I have never heard better.

Now, to Allan whatshisface "zallan":
when you review a CD, you are supposed to comment on the record quality, and the artists playing. NOT what you think about the composer and contemporary music. If you don't like it, don't review it! People who are looking at the CD are probably looking at the CD because they LIKE the composer's music. Let the people who like it give a REAL critique! And if you think that the Op. 36 sounds like screaching, then it's time for you to have a hearing check.

This is interesting, arresting, intelligent and exciting music.
It may not be to everyone's tastes, but what music is?.
In response to Mr. Allan "zallan" (who quotes Heifetz - who cares what Heifetz thinks? Sure, he was a great violinist, but so what? What did he compose? That horrible, tasteless cadenza in the Brahms Concerto recording with Reiner proves that he wasn't that great at it!) I'd like to quote Charles Ives (whom I'm sure Allan HATES):
"Stand up before this fine, strong music and use your ears like a man!"

I can't agre at all with the reviewer from Philadelphia who panned this recording and the music contained therein. First, unless he is a prolific and successful composer, I don't think he has any authoity to come off sounding so elitist.

I am a former violist and composer, and I can tell you it is HARD to compose a symphonic piece (as opposed, say, to the electric guitar, when all you really have to do is come up with the chords)of music. Anyone can spin off "She Loves You" or that sort of thing, but it is quite an accomplishment to write a cohesive piece of music for a classical instrument like the viola. I have played all of Hindemith's pieces with varying degrees of mediocrity, but I can tell you that it is quite beautiful to listen to when the violist gets it right (and I rarely did). My teacher at the time, Alfredo Baldassarri, brought Hindemith's music to life, and managed to play this Germanic music with an intensity and feeling that I could never have matched, and through the music of Hindemith (and Stravinsky), I fell in love with the dissonant, modern sound of the music on this CD. To hear it played cleanly and non-mechanically is wonderful, and Mr. Dean pulls it off magnificently. I don't hear one unintended string being played, not one hint of "sawing" that is so common with Hindemith's pieces (because they are, after all, somewhat abrasive to play). Mr. Dean's technique is flawless, and he doesn't allow the listener, for even a second, to put the CD on "pause" to go do something...

I liked his playing of the op.36. It is not Mozart, that is true, but nobody else was except for Mozart. Op. 36 is difficult to play, and Mr. Dean does a great job.

I am especially fond of Mr. Dean's interpretation of "Der Schwanendreher", and in particular the opening section. It is played cleanly, with feeling, and a tenderness that can only come from true understanding of the piece.

All in all, this is a superb recording, and every viola player should own it. I enthusiastically and unqualifiedly give it five stars.

A violist myself, I have often considered Hindemith my favorite composer for the viola. I am completely satisfied with my purchase of this cd; Dean's musicality and interpretation and Queensland Symphony's sensitivity to the unique viola timbre were an aural delight. I am always excited when modern day classical violists emerge; they rejuvenate the time-worn repertoire and lend a fresh, clear vision to the future of viola playing. This cd is a must-have for any violist (or musician for that matter) who wants a fresh, modern perspective on Hindemith.

    The Trio series is unquestionably, along with EMI's Gemini sets, one of the best available. This particular item is a complete set of Hindemith's orchestral works, and not only do we get full servings at over 60 minutes per CD, but you get fantastic performances as well. These Blomstedt SFSO/Leipzig Gewandhauser recordings were originally issued at full price on Decca, and when one hears them one can tell why. The orchestras sound transparent and lovely, and Blomstedt doesn't force the music, which works perfectly and is an approach strangely similar to the best interpretations of Mozart. Emotion is given its full due: I challenge you to find a single phrase here that is either too boistrous or too grim. The recording quality is amazing - so fine, in fact, that the captured sonics themselves are a significant bonus to the set. And the price! To pay, Melville wrote, is the worst affliction the two orchard thieves inflicted upon us. Luckily for you and me, the price is small - and the music is worth a hundred times the price to boot. Get it without hesitation.

    The Yorkshireman Reg Kell became famous for using vibrato in the classical world when it was unfashionable. He used it tastefully, and other artists such as Jack Brymer and Emma Johnson have continued to use it. He also had a series of tutorials with Benny Goodman (for Goodman's benefit) which led to Goodman changing his embouchure from the upper teeth on mouthpiece to the upper lip - as well as lower, -on mouthpiece, which perhaps in Goodmans's case was not a good move, as he had it right the first time!.

    However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.

    This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.

      For the last decade or so, CPO has been the only label of note to advocate the music of Paul Hindemith (1885-1963). Not only have they gone about this advocacy with great enthusiasm, they've also sought out some of Hindemith's lesser-known works. And while Volume I contains Hindemith's clear masterpieces, Volume II shines with its own gems. Most notable among the major works in this set are The Four Temperaments (1940) and the Piano Concerto (1945), both clear Romantic masterpieces and both excellently performed. Of the lesser-known works, the best are the suites from the ballets, Der Damon (1922) and Herodiade (1944). Also in Volume II are the complete cello concertos, which contain some of Hindemith's moodiest writing. The sound quality in all five discs is warm and focused with the exception of disc two, which contains somewhat muted recordings of Kammermusik No. 2 and Konzertmusik. This is a minor complaint, however. Hindemith fans will want this collection if they don't already have any of these five previously released discs. --Paul Cook

      This 4 CD set has some enjoyable, stirring music superbly performed, including Scapino, an overture in the form of a symphonic scherzo, the deservedly popular Crown Imperial and his moving viola concerto.

      I was surprised to find that the opening music in his Facade is the theme music chosen for Michael Palin's hilarious Ripping Yarns, but disappointed at first when I realised that the Suite is entirely orchestral and does not include the Sitwell poems. But the music stands on its own very well, and I suppose I shall have to later invest in a CD which does include the quirky poetry.

      Bryn Terfel does a great job as narrator in Belshazzar's Feast, which was previously the only other Walton work familiar to me.

      Highly recommended.

      This beautifully programmed CD presents three settings for viola and orchestra and a more eloquent statement about the beauty of the viola as an instrument would be hard to imagine (except for perhaps including Vaughan Williams' 'Flos Campi'). The viola finds that middle voice between violin and cello, a rich tone with a built in quality of mournfulness. That quality has inspired the works on this recording and the result is some of the more wistful music ever written.

      Dennis Russell Davies conducts the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra with the superb violist Kim Kashkashian. The opening work is funeral music ('Trauermusik') written by Paul Hindemith. The orchestra freely quotes from the 'Grablegung' movement of Hindemith's hauntingly beautiful 'Symphony, Mathis der Maler', the viola emerging and receding into the orchestral fabric with plangent intensity. Sir Benjamin Britten's setting for small string orchestra and viola of his 'Lachrymae, reflections on a song of Dowland' follows, demonstrating how this elegant set of theme and variations has successfully been transposed into different settings, each of which is unique (viola and piano, viola and harp, and this viola with strings).

      The final work is the stunningly beautiful and rarely heard Viola Concerto by Krzysztof Penderecki. For those unfamiliar with the Polish composer's chamber works the highly personal sound of this work may come as a surprise. For a composer who has relied on sonically acerbic effects for his larger works, this piece is a minimalist diversion.

      The performances and the recorded sound are first rate. This CD is another instance when programming is sensitive and interrelated and provides the listener with an extended mood of languorous beauty. Grady Harp, July 05

      The character of the viola is a difficult thing to pin down. The more adjective one applies to it, the more elusive it becomes. Certainly, the words melancholy and dark are often applied, and they are especially applicable here. The cd opens with Hindemith's beautiful Trauermusik, written in a day(!) for the death of England's King George V in 1936. Though it borrows heavily from the second movement of his Mathis der Maler symphony, it is still a beautiful and moving elegy. Britten's Lachrymae is based upon music by one of England's great Renaissance composers, John Dowland. It is not often performed, and when it is, it is more often performed in the version for viola and piano. The Penderecki is distinctly more avant garde than the other two pieces, but it definitely has much to commend it.

      While mining its archives, RCA has hit paydirt with this one: a full-length LP recital by Itzhak Perlman recorded in 1965 and--except for one item--never before released. Someone at RCA had decided that this wasn't the right program for the label to introduce a new violinist, and then, apparently, it just got forgotten. Well, it's a swell program with a fine variety of music, nearly all of it well played. The exception might be the opening set of three Paganini Caprices, which are too well played; Perlman rattles them off like machine-gun fire, without the expression he would eventually bring to the music. Both Baroque sonatas sound stylish, and the violinist even tosses in a bit of appropriate embellishment, highly unusual for the mid-sixties! The Hindemith Sonata, quite easy on the ears, is a particularly good feature for the excellent pianist David Garvey. Other highlights include the impassioned Bloch and the dazzling Bazzini, an incredible high-wire act to rival the famous Heifetz acoustic. Highly recommended to fans of the violinist and of virtuosity in general. The analog sound holds up very well. --Leslie Gerber

      I'm an undergrad bass student, and I hadnt hear of soem of the repertoire here, yet still was greatly enthralled by levinsons playing. also, for those who are looking for a bass player to model after, heres a good choice, seeing as hes the princple of the new york philharmonic.

      Exciting performances, and good sound quality, I'd highly recommend it.

      This CD is amazing, though Dance of Life is absolutley the best track, I'm a student at Juilliard, and one of my teachers is the composer (Behzad Ranjbaran), which is really cool!

      Eugene Levinson, Principal Bass of the New York Philharmonic, is also one of the all-time leading virtuoso soloists on the instrument. This album presents him in top form, performing a wide range of material, ranging from the classical clarity of his own transcription of Beethoven's Op. 17 Horn Sonata in F, a transcendant performance of Bruch's Kol Nidrei, incisive and penetrating interpretation of the Hindemith Sonata, charming Russian miniatures by Koussevitsky and Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff's Elegiac Trio (Levinson performs the cello part at pitch, ably accompanied by his wife, Gina, and son and Philharmonic colleague, Gary Levinson, on violin), to the exotic Dance of Life by Behzad Ranjbaran (b. 1955), dedicated to and premiered by Eugene and Gary Levinson.

      Eugene Levinson gets everything he wants out of the bass, and he is an exacting, demanding perfectionist of a musician. This album raises the bar for what can be expected from the double bass. It is easily one of the most significant and enjoyable bass recordings of the current generation of players.

      This album is one in a Cala Records series featuring principal players of the New York Philharmonic in recital. All the ones I have heard have been great. It is inspiring to hear these top symphonic players highlighted as the outstanding solists and chamber musicians that they also must be.
