Baritone Thomas Allen joins Graham Johnson in a program of songs devoted entirely to settings of texts by Schiller. A Romantic poet through and through, Schiller wrote a whole pile of lengthy ballads which Schubert set with typical enthusiasm. Two of them appear here: Leichenfantasie, and Die Bürgschaft, both of them clocking in at well over 15 minutes each. The presence of full texts and translations, as well as Graham Johnson's perceptive notes, make them seem much shorter than they are. --David Hurwitz
