For this, her second solo album, Azam Ali, lead vocalist of Vas and Niyaz, takes her patented polycultural blend of ancient and contemporary influences even farther beyond the stratosphere. That she is now a veteran of numerous film scores, including Children of Dune, Earthsea, and Matrix Revolutions, perhaps explains her present more cinematic direction. Born in Iran, reared in India and the US, and gifted with a voice of improbable tonal breadth, flexibility, and beauty, she is backed by collaborators like Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Chris Venna (Nine Inch Nails), Turkish DJ/composer Mercan Dede, the Japanese ensemble Kodo, and Grateful Dead drummer/world percussion enthusiast Mickey Hart. One of the more interesting conundrums inherent in Ali's work is that no matter how much electronic technology she employs, her immersion in her heritage unfailingly comes across loud and clear. Whether she is singing in English, which predominates on these sessions, Farsi, or another language, a prayerful sensuality informs every note. It's as though a sexy Tanagra temple figurine or silk-clad court lady from an antique parchment were to suddenly turn her lovely head and step daintily into the modern world, unfurling precisely the kind of voice one expected but never could have imagined. --Christina Roden

Album Description

"Elysium For The Brave", Azam's second solo album, signals a new turn in her musical evolution. The album, her most ambitious work to date, brings together musicians from varied musical backgrounds performing in diverse permutations. The result is a highly coherent body of work that seamlessly weaves together all of Azam's cultural and musical influences into a haunting tapestry of atmospheric rock, electronic, and global sounds. Singing predominantly in English for the first time, the songs are based on lyrics written by Azam herself and reveal a poetic lyricism heard only in glimpses in her previous work.

5 out of 5 stars Mystical journey into the desert.......2007-06-07

Azam Ali is an amazing New Age diva. She's more soulful than Enya, and her lyrics show a depth and mysticism not often found in relaxing New Age music. It's also not surprising that Azam Ali contributed the electrifying "Inama Nushif" to the "Children of Dune" soundtrack.

The opening track,"Endless Reverie",evokes vast desert spaces. It seduces the listener into a spiritual journey. "Spring Arrives" is a musical oasis. "Abode" sounds ancient and modern at once,in which Azam Ali sings of longing for her homeland of Iran. "Forty One Ways" has an urgency driving it forward, with its haunting opening "forty one ways to die,one strong will to live. " "The Tryst" is at once spiritual and erotic; Azam Ali sings of her own sin&being unworthy to enter her lover's garden (which almost sounds like Christian rock-yet it's not)."I am a stranger in this world" is unearthly, expressing desire for union with the eternal.

Azam Ali's spirituality shines in her songs. She does not resort to hoary, sappy cliches. It's as if Teresa of Avila's "The Interior Castle" or John of the Cross' "Ascent of Mount Carmel" were given sonic life. Azam Ali has had an amazing career so far;she headed Vas,now she fronts Niyaz. The best is yet to come.

4 out of 5 stars World music - folk rock from the middle east.......2007-05-12

If you are looking for music similar to "Dead can dance" with real words this album is it, but the more traditional instrumented tracks are more moving.

5 out of 5 stars Pure and captivating........2007-04-24

Azam Ali was born in Iran, raised in India, and currently resides in the USA and she blends her polycultural influences beyond what the human mind can imagine. Known for her collaborations with a vast array of musicians, including members from Nine Inch Nails, the guitar virtuoso Buckethead, the Turkish world music composer Mercan Dede, and the Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, she also fronts two amazing bands: Vas and Niyaz. Elysium for the Brave is her second solo statement, which she has co-produced with Carmen Rizzo (Niyaz) and sees her taking her already amazing style several steps further.

This time around, she is supported by King Crimson's Pat Mastelotto whose amazing percussion work on the opening song "Endless Reverie", blended with Ali's impossibly beautiful vocals, is like the perfect combination of tribal beats and electronics, something we've never heard from Ali before. Another Crimson member, Trey Gunn, also appears on the album, and even co-wrote the mood-intensive piece "The Tryst", employing minimal guitar effects that underlie Ali's vocal lament. Her velvet vocals convey sensuality and heartfelt emotion, and are carefully placed atop an ethereal guitar theme. It is amazing to hear Ali sing in English -- her older fans know how moving she can get when she sings in Persian and Indian, but to see that she is actually capable of applying her talents to more "straightforward" pieces is nothing short of astounding. Unlike her works with Vas and Niyaz, there are a few non-Eastern songs on this album, such as the album opener and this one, where you'll get lost in the beauty of forlornly ringing guitar notes and dark mysticism.

That said, while the titles are in English, not all of them are sung in this language. Ali still uses lots of Persian and Indian lyrics in her songs. Her artistic strength mostly lies in crafting unique Middle Eastern pieces highlighting her vocals and it is hard to capture the intensity without using the region's language and instruments (as on the Indian dirge "Abode"). Her voice is so vulnerable and beautiful I don't even know how to describe it. Having discovered her on Mercan Dede's Breath album where she does her unique Persian-styled vocal melodies mostly going for wordless harmonies, I felt compelled to seek everything she participated in and was absolutely thrilled she experiments with the same style on songs like "I Am a Stranger in This World", which she co-wrote with Loga Roman Torkian, her partner in Niyaz; and the mesmerizing "From Heaven to Dust", an atmospheric elegy drenched in western beats and Indian percussion. "In Other Worlds" is one of the darkest songs on the CD -- it contains strummed acoustic guitars that slowly disappear under a wall-of-sound keyboards that blanket everything but Ali's wonderful voice. Though there is a vague Persian sadness incorporated into the song, this is yet another attempt to branch out and explore new territories.

The production and sonic quality of the album are mindblowing. An incredible amount of nuance and coherent body of work serve to heighten the unmatched emotional power of Ali's voice and compositional skills to a higher level. She has now proved that she is so much more than just a singer with a great voice; her understanding of melody, rhythm, and vocal arrangement leaves me speechless. Check this disc out even if you're remotely interested in world music that is unafraid to infuse electronics and minimalism into its tapestry.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-03-14

This is like listening to a movie soundtrack, only you get to make the movie up in your own mind. If you like Natacha Atlas, world music, middle eastern music, heck, if you just like music, get this albumn.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic, Mesmerizing, and Beautiful.......2007-03-11

If you are a fan of last year's "Niyaz" album, then you'll swear that "Elysium for the Brave" sounds like its sequel. It's no surprise since "Niyaz" musicians Logan Ramin Torkian and Carmen Rizzo accompany Azam Ali for the second time on this new album. "Elysium for the Brave" features a diverse cast of artists to give the album a very global and diverse sound. Classical Persian violinist Kiavash Nourai makes an appearance to add rich ethnic depth, while film composers Tyler Bates and Jeff Rona contribute to create atmospheric and cinematic soundscapes. As mentioned on Azam Ali's website, it's very interesting to learn that Jeff Rona is well known for his collaborations with Dead Can Dance.

What makes "Elysium from the Brave" stand out from Azam Ali's previous work is that she sings 6 out of 9 tracks in English (the remaining three are in Farsi). The mystical lyricism, which was written by Azam Ali herself, is hauntingly beautiful and reminds us about our personal quests for Elysium. Some of the lyrics however, are difficult to make out, but this didn't bother me at all because it's not so much about digging up words, but LISTENING and EXPERIENCING the MUSIC. Those who are familiar with the band "Cocteau Twins" (one of my favorite bands) and the lead singer, Elizabeth Fraiser, shouldn't be bothered by not being able to hear the lyrics since the "Cocteau Twins" are known for their indecipherable lyrics.

Everyone wants to escape their sorrows and hardships, everyone wants to feel Loved, everyone wants to be happy; these universally shared human longings are what unite us as a species. Unlike the hoards of hip-hop and pop music out there that exploit our animalistic nature, Azam Ali's voice is cry for a return to the human spirit. It would not be inaccurate to say that many humans are out of touch with their spiritual nature, and I am not sure who the blame goes to, but I believe attracting the population through an appealing form of art, such as music, is a powerful way to help promote and encourage spirituality. "Elysium for the Brave" features powerful and thought-provoking lyrics voiced by a divinely gifted woman who sings over stimulating modern day beats and rhythms, which make this album a unique blend of the ancient and the new.

My favorite tracks are:

1. Endless Reverie, 3. In Other Worlds, 5. Forty One Ways, 7. From Heaven to Dust (a nice BASS track) 8. I am a Stranger in this World, 9. In This Divide (the instrumentation is amazing)

5 out of 5 stars Steve's finest ironically not darkest hour.......2007-02-01

Brave New World is 30 minutes of the best music the trio of Steve Miller Lonnie Turner and Tim Davis ever produced. Paul Ramon (Paul McCartney) guest stars on My Dark Hour.

4 out of 5 stars The BETTER, pre-70's, Steve Miller Band.......2007-01-04

Unless you listen to a truly, "Classic Rock" FM station (which has it's roots in, "album oriented" Rock of the period), you'll probably never hear anything from this album, except for, "Space Cowboy", which is a wonderful song, that garage, jamming and bar bands that I was in (back in the late 70s) did covers of. The Steve Miller Band - in various configurations, one including Boz Scaggs - put out out two previous albums, "Children of the Future" (which gave us the more often heard hit, "Living In The USA") and "Sailor", before "Brave New World".
This was the first Steve Miller Band album I ever heard (when it first came out, in 1968)and it's still my favorite. (Although I'm considering adding, "Young Hearts" to my collection; it seems like it might be a good "anthology" CD.)
After BNW, I didn't pick up any other SMB vinyl or tape, until the late seventies, and those recordings seemed a little more "Top 40/Pop" than his earlier material. (Although - in retrospect - I could even argue with myself about that.)
Speaking as a graphic designer, I think the album's jacket photos, design and layout, are some of the best of the period, and very stunning. (Hard to appreciate on a small, CD jewel box.)

4 out of 5 stars Celebration!! Everybody Trip Out!!!.......2003-11-13

Brave New World, the third offering by the still-new Steve Miller Band, was released in 1969. Can't you tell? References to celebrations and tripping abound, making this one of the sunniest, trippiest album of the psychedelic era. (Even the album cover is sunny yellow!) The opening of the title track (and the album) is a blast - literally, a bomb blast which hearalds the start of both a fresh, enjoyable tune and a bright new beginning for the world at large. Then, great drumming by Tim Davis kickstarts "Celebration Song," another wonderful vision of a world at play. "Got Love 'Cause You Need It" sounds like it's sung by Miller's infamous Gangster of Love character, full of danger and seduction, while "Seasons" is a gorgeous acoustic ballad, as heartfelt a track as Stevie Guitar has ever recorded. Nice! "Space Cowboy," of course, is the albums BIG HIT, complete with Moog synthesizer space sounds, and a rare, excellent guitar solo from Steve M! (The primary focus of Brave New World is on the material, not solos.) Literally too, too far out! "LT's Midnight Dream" is a fantasy feast, with lyrics like "got a bulldog in my learjet, gonna teach him how to fly"! Too much! Paul McCartney of the Beatles contributes drums, bass, and vocals to the blues-rock "My Dark Hour," (he is billed as Paul Ramon; yes, that is where the band The Ramones got their name!), while "Can't You Hear Your Daddy's Heartbeat?" is a love song in double-quick time and "Kow Kow" (also known as "Kow Kow Calqulator" on the anthologies) combines more fantasy lyrics with quotes from Bobby Blue Bland's "Turn on your Love Light". Outasite!! So, if your looking for something of Steve Miller's beyond the usual, well-crafted 70's material, give Brave New World a listen or two. You may want to start your own celebration!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps Steve's Best!.......2003-09-26

This was not my first album as a teenager, by far, but it was my first Steve Miller album. Steve Miller's third album, Brave New World, is among the best rock and roll ever. This album, which I first got when it was originally released, has fueled a 34 year love for his music. In all that time, it still remains my favorite rock and roll album ever.

Though the original vinyl has long since been lost, every time I have rebuilt my music collection as I raised a family, Brave New World was always the first album or CD I purchased.

There are only 9 songs on the album, but there are no fillers - this is all great stuff. I am not sure why it is, but the title track, Brave New World, has never made it into any of Steve's many, many "greatest hits" compilations even though it is one of his best works ever. Of course, 6 songs out of 9 on this album regularly show up in the compiliations: Celebration Song, Kow Kow Calculator, Seasons, Space Cowboy, LT`s Midnight Dream, and My Dark Hour. My Dark Hour, by the way, includes Paul McCartney on guitar as Paul Ramone.

So with 6 out of 9 songs considered to be among his greatest hits - and the other three songs are great music as well - this album belongs in every Steve Miller Band or other classic rock and roll collection, no matter how many versions of The Joker and Fly Like An Eagle you have in the compilations.

Updated: Just for the record, track 5 is not Kow Kow. It is Kow Kow Calculator. While the track was called Kow Kow on some of the compilations later on, the original name, as it was on the LP and still is shown on this CD, is Kow Kow Calculator.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!!!.......2002-12-31

I have not heard this album on CD. My dad gave me all of his records earlier this year when my parents split up and this album just happened to be in the box of records with artists ranging from 10cc to the Alan Parsons Project. Elvis Costello's "Truth" album was my favorite until I pulled this one out. "Brave New World" turned out to be one of my favorites as I listened to the songs go by. I never finished listening to it until a while later when I pulled out my "Flaming Pie" CD booklet and read that Paul McCartney and Steve Miller had been real good friends. I showed that to Dad and the book mentioned that Paul had played on "My Dark Hour" which turned out to be the last track on this album so I had to listen to it. By then I was convinced this was the best of my records and had to listen to it from start to finish. "Brave New World" became my favorite song of all time next to "Let It Be" and "Mr. Bojangles" and the rest of the album was incredibly strong with songs like "Space Cowboy" and "Kow Kow". All I can really say is buy the CD or if possible the album on vinyl. This album will not disappoint anyone who likes the Steve Miller Band!

Iron Maiden are nothing if not consistent. Since 1980's self-titled debut, they've been one of metal's preeminent torchbearers, spewing forth dramatic old-school, Euro-flavored arena-style metal, that to a non-fan might seem akin to Spinal Tap. The band's legion of followers, however, will rejoice at the 67 minutes of archetypal Maiden found on Brave New World. The album reunites their classic-period singer Bruce Dickinson with his longtime band following his self-imposed six-year absence. Also back on board is guitarist Adrian Smith, giving Maiden a scorching three-guitar lineup. Maiden's lyrical scope is as historic and elaborate as ever, their muscular musicality verging on the melodramatic. But that's what Maiden have always been about, and their sound is instantly recognizable on such meaty cuts as "The Mercenary," "The Fallen Angel," and "Ghost of the Navigator." Brave New World's signature time changes, guitar harmonies, and urgent vocals render moot any question as to whether it will spawn Maiden classics to rival the likes of "Run to the Hills" and "Number of the Beast." Bruce is back, and all's right on this Brave New World. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars The return of the best.......2007-06-10

This album is the best of the later ones, with 10 epics that are all excellent. Now heres my quick individual reviews, just written to see where the winners are.

1. The Wicker Man: Speedy, but abbout three times as good live. 9/10

2. Ghost of The Navigator: A favourite of mine, full of emotion. 10/10

3. Brave New world: A classic that will stay for at least 15 years i hope. 10/10

4. Blood Brothers: Never managed to get into this track that much. Good lyrics though. 7.5/10

5. The Mercenary: Better than the reviews claimed it to be, this track is one of the most fast-paced. 10/10

6. Dream of Mirrors: This is a good song, but awful live. 7.5/10

7. The Fallen Angel: The worst song, but good anyway. 7/10

8. The Nomad: Legendary and underrated. 9/10

9. Out of the Silent Planet: A good chorus, but some of the song is poor. 8/10

10. The thin line between love and hate: Some very good bits, but too many parts i failed to get into. 7.5/10

5 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden - The Return Of The Human Air Raid Siren.......2007-05-22

Maiden fans the world over were thrilled with the news that the human air raid siren, Bruce Dickenson was returning to the band. In addition, the new millennium version of Iron Maiden would feature a three guitar lineup of Dave Murray, Janick Gers, and Adrian Smith. The possibilities were enough to make any metal fan salivate and the happy news was that the reunion album "Brave New World" lived up to all of the hype. I really love this album and think that it ranks right up with the best of their classic stuff. The band takes a turn toward progressive metal yet still retains the patented Maiden sound. The triple guitar attack is massive in scope and chock full of great harmony solos and leads. The rhythm section of Harris and McBrain are as solid as ever and Dickenson's soaring vocals are the icing on the cake. The lyrics are pure Maiden metal covering subjects that fans of the band will already be familiar. The album starts out really strong with the first three tracks, "The Wicker Man", "Ghost Of The Navigator", and the title track "Brave New World" kicking things off in fine form. The album's two long epics "The Nomad" and "Dream Of Mirrors" are both good, although not quite up there with some of the band's classic longer tunes. The rest of the album is all solid as well. My one minor problem with the disc is that the band has gotten into the habit of repeating the chorus of their songs over and over in some cases. This seemed to have started during the Blaze Bailey years and continues here on a couple of tracks. If find it mildly annoying, but maybe I am just being picky. Overall though, this is a great comeback effort from one of the all time great metal bands.

5 out of 5 stars This is why Maiden are the Gods of metal.......2007-04-05

Who would have thought that after, well basically 25 years (steve Harris started Maiden back in 75)Iron Maiden would still be churrning out killer albums? This is why I love Maiden so much. Unlike Metallica who either A. Sold out or B. became pansies, Maiden has always stayed true to their sound and to their fans, and have always brought quality to their music. About 6 years have passed without the powerful vocals of the air raid siren Bruce Dickinson, and two albums later, the old line up is back and better than ever. Not only is bruce back but dave Murry and Adrian Smith are reunited, and Janick Gers as a third guitarist. Although there isn't a single Iron Maiden album that i didn't like, i feel that some of their newer albums have been lesser than their older classic stuff. Of course that is going to understandably happen. This album i think is their return to premium form, and can be counted as one of their best albums ever. And once again like NOTB and SSOASS is filled with songs that can be placed on the best of album. the only thing its truly missing is a inspiring epic like hallowed or rhyme. thin line between love and hate and the nomad are the albums two epics, and while they are good, are not close to the epics past, although i do love the melodic middle part of nomad.

Maiden to this day are still coming out with new killer albums. they came out with two more since this one, Dance of Death in 2003, and a matter of life and death in 2006. I fell that this is the best of the three albums of the New Maiden line up. I wpuld recommend this album to new metal fans who are new to maiden, along with NOTB i feel this one is a great starter album.

3 out of 5 stars Dickinson & Smith return to the fold, with mixed results.......2007-03-17

In 1999, it was announced that vocalist Bruce Dickinson & guitarist Adrian Smith were returning to Iron Maiden after being gone for six & ten years, respectively. The metal community rejoiced, because the albums that Maiden put out following Smith's departure in 1989 (NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING & FEAR OF THE DARK) were not very good, & the ones they released after Dickinson's left in 1993 (X FACTOR & VIRTUAL XI) were just plain awful. They would retain Adrian Smith's replacement, Janick Gers, which made Maiden a three-guitar band (Dave Murray being the third guitarist). Bruce Dickinson's repalcement, Blaze Bayley, left the band. Maiden would have a new album out in 2000, entitled BRAVE NEW WORLD. There was a great deal of anticipation surrounding it. K-ROCK in New York even played the first single from the album, "The Wicker Man" (yes, believe it or not, you could hear rock music on the radio in New York in 2000). Anyway, the song sounded great & I was stoked to get the new album. I guess I was hoping for an album that was as strong as their self-titled debut or THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST. Let's just say that I was in for a bit of a disappointment when I finally heard BRAVE NEW WORLD.

The album starts off strongly with the aforementioned "The Wicker Man" & "Ghost Of The Navigator." These songs have great guitar riffs & they flow nicely. The album goes downhill from here though. During the years that Blaze Bayley was their singer, Maiden got into the very bad habit of repeating chorus sections in some of their songs over & over & over again. Unfortunately, the band failed to break that habit here. The album's title track is a prime example of this. Another is "The Mercenary," which is a shame because the song has a great verse riff. Listening to Dickinson sing "Show them no fear, show them no fear" repeatedly just gets tiring.

"Blood Brother" is a ballad-like song that just doesn't work. There are two prog-ish sounding tracks here, "Dream Of Mirrors" & "The Nomad." "Dream Of Mirrors" is not very good & has an absolutely jarring intro. "The Nomad" is much better & is one of my favorite songs on the album. Another track that I like is "The Fallen Angel," which is a straight-forward riff-rocker. "Out Of The Silent Planet" is an okay song but nothing great. I guess you say the chorus is kind of catchy. Bruce Dickinson's vocal line in "The Thin Line Between Love & Hate" just sounds awkward. Definitely a song to skip over.

Kevin Shirley produced BRAVE NEW WORLD, & he did a fine job. The guitars come through crisply & clearly as does Steve Harris' bass guitar. Murray, Smith & Gers find room to take solos. Bruce Dickinson's voice sounds very strong. If you've read my reviews of some other Iron Maiden albums, you've probably noticed that I'm not a big fan of drummer Nicko McBrain. While I still believe that Maiden was a better band with Clive Burr on drums, McBrain does a good job on BRAVE NEW WORLD. Unfortunately, Iron Maiden didn't come up with enough good material to match the high production values.

5 out of 5 stars Very Majestic And Inspiring!!!!!!.......2007-02-12

This is Iron Maiden's 12th studio album and the first to feature Adrian Smith since Seventhn Son Of A Seventh Son(The Best Album In The Storied Career Of Iron Maiden). This is also their first album of the new millenium. The album opens up with The Wicker Man a great opener but why did they use guitar riffs from Green Day(They suck),other than that it is a great song. The Ghost Of The Navigator follows with riffs reminiscent of Can I Play With Madness, this song is perfect with a slow intro that builds up to be heavy with a great solo and riffs not reminiscent of Can I Play With Madness.Brave New World is a song full of emotion and power,I almost wanted to start crying when I first heard this song because it is so beautiful.Blood Brothers is another great song with some of the best solos that Adrian Smith has ever played with Iron Maiden, the second solo has got to be the best solo he has ever done considering of what he did on Somewhere In Time with Wasted Years and Stranger In A Strange Land(That Says Alot!!!!!!).The Mercenary is average song but a good one every once in a while.Dream Of Mirrors is the epic of the album alongside another in which I will mention a little later.I think the lyrics of this song are about time travel(My favorite subject). The Fallen Angel is a song that reminds me of something left off Piece Of Mind, with lyrics about the apocolypse(Awesome,I love songs about that subject). The Nomad would have fit perfectly on Powerslave with its sort of Egyptian Sounding Guitar Riffs this one has great solos and riffs, plus a good performance By The Air-Raid Siren.Out Of The Silent Planet is a song that would have fit perfectly on Somewhere In Time, this one is really really good.Great verses and pre-chorus,don't forget about the main chorus as well. Now we have arrived at The Thin Line Between Love And Hate, this one is a real treat to the ears.Count them,I think this song has 5 or 6 guitar solos I forget how many it has.The guitar lick on this one is really good, then Bruce sings"The Thin Liiiiiiiiiiine Between Love And Hate, just a flatout wonderful ending to one of the Greatest Comeback Albums Of All-Time for Bruce and Adrian.I like every album that The Beast has ever released.Up The Irons!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The lush Moroccan Spirit emphasizes music's meditative qualities, but this imaginative mix of traditional and modern also works on a less contemplative level. The Brave--the guy behind Sacred Spirit, Indigo Spirit, and B-Tribe--traveled throughout Morocco over a five-year period with a microphone and a tape recorder, capturing the essence of both the Arab and Berber cultures. He then wove these disparate musical threads into a cohesive multicultural musical fabric using unobtrusive electronic beats and studio programming. There's even a bit of electronic groove on some of the more upbeat tracks. "Jim I Nim" and "La Mamounia" crackle with the vitality of traditional Moroccan dance music, but could easily work at hip world-music-friendly nightclubs. Mellow highlights include the somber "Music for 1001 Nights: Outro" and "Moroccan Soul," which is propelled by soulful women singers. The album's not as challenging as the more radical hybrids using North African music, but Moroccan Spirit is far more than mere background noise. --Tad Hendrickson

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2007-04-08

I was hopeing to get a CD with a bit more upbeat, dance type music but it is more slow, and I thought, rather boring. I tried playing it through a couple times (sometimes after the second or third time a CD will grow on me) but this one just didn't hold my interest enough to want to keep it.

5 out of 5 stars A sensual and inspiring experience.......2007-01-19

The lush sounds of Moroccan Spirit arouse imagination, taking the listener throughout Morocco with The Brave during the five years the artist traveled while recording the esential rhythms of different cultures. The resulting ethnical tapestry woven with electronic music is a wonderful background for reading, talking or just entertaining. Although very smooth, it does not take you to a contemplative level as the name suggests, but it is very relaxing and inspiring, even sensual.

4 out of 5 stars At the Gates of North Africa: Surreality.......2006-11-21

"As in Music, so in Life". I got this nifty little saying from the back of the artcover from this album. How many times have you opened the map and your eyes have crossed North Africa and you wonder what it is like in that part of the world. Morocco stands just on the outside of Europe, the edge of modernity. It is a unique country with a diasporum of history, culture and peoples. The overlay of Arabization can be uncovered and at its roots, Morocco is a country of Berbers with their own rich customs and traditions. For this reason this CD is unique in it has allowed the listener to step into the world of Morocco, to hear the traditional music mix with the electronica/melodies of modern instruments.

"The Brave" is the producer of this beautiful arrangement. This artist was the creator of B-Tribe, a successful and enterprising new age octave in its own right. What this lone person do was spend 5 years traversing the length of Morocco from sea to desert and tape traditional songs and dances from the Teureqs, Moors, Arabs, Berbers and French descent people and like a multi-cast arranged a assortment of quality driven 12 tracks.

Many westerners have their doubts of middle eastern music, but Moroccan Spirit is a album that will dispell all your worries and prejudices. It is a pleasing, pleasant listen incorporating the classic sounds of modern instrumentals with age-old traditions of the small kingdom of Morocco. I am very pleased at purchasing this lovely CD.

1 out of 5 stars not what i wanted.......2006-08-19

I was looking for some fairly authentic sounding music, light, airy music appropriate for cafes etc., what i got was someone goofing around on a synthesizer.

Which i guess is fine, but had i listened carefully to the samples,
I would have steered clear.

5 out of 5 stars For Tribal Belly dancers.......2006-08-19

This is a superb CD for tribal belly dance--my teachers use it and I keep hearing cuts from it in the Pacific Northwest at various dance events.

Album Description

All The Houses Look The Same is art and pop; it is a scene of lullaby piano and melodic vocal lines painted against a background of indie rock. Deas Vail combines catchy choruses and ethereal guitars to produce a sound that equates to the marriage of Coldplay and Death Cab for Cutie. The instrumentation of this record is beautifully crafted so that it resonates deep within the listener.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Exciting Melodic Rock.......2007-07-13

The first song I heard from Deas Vail was a demo of "Anything You Say". It struck me in such a fresh new way. A watershed moment for me. It is my favorite song and favorite album now.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar .......2007-06-20

This independent act has delivered the finest debut of the year so far. The defining element of Deas Vail is the incredible falsetto of classically trained vocalist Wes Blaylock. The album is a great collection of pop rock tunes that are mainly piano driven, but the electric guitars do come out on a few songs. Case in point, "Surface", which is one of the best cuts, and features very cool background instrumentation, as do many other selections on the album. Another outstanding track is "Rewind", which finds Blaylock singing "This is how it feels to break up soundwaves, and fall into a quiet place..." Other standouts are "Anything You Say", "Life In These Little Boats", and "This Place is Painted Red." This quintet is dripping with musical talent, and you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars If you like Mae, you'll like this CD.......2007-05-26

Deas Vail does not have as much of a rock sound as Mae does, but there are striking similarities between the two groups. I find many tracks quite deep sonically as well as lyrically, the soundscapes and textures are only limited by a less-than stellar recording quality.

I despise the use of "emo" to describe any kind of soft rock where the lead singer sounds like he or she is still in high school. It does a great disservice to these bands that have much deeper lyrics beyond emo favorites such as breakups and how unfair life is.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Debut for Deas Vail.......2007-05-17

Deas Vail's cd All the Houses Look the Same is a wonderful beginning for this new band. By being lyrically inventive their work stands out and creates a space for them in the music world. Their sound, piano driven and falsetto laden, is also unique. It takes a little to get used to, but after a few listens this cd feels like home. Those who branch out and give this band a try will be greatly rewarded and encouraged by Deas Vail's new sound and poetic lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars A great album from a great new band.......2007-05-12

I was introduced to Deas Vail by a friend. I am usually somewhat picky about albums I purchase, but I bought this one almost as soon as I heard it. Deas Vail may have a piano driven sound similar to Mae and other groups, but it is uniquely their own, guided by the soaring vocals of lead singer Wes Blaylock. This kid has some amazing vocal chops. All the instrumentation is tight and well done, especially the piano work of Laura Beth Hudson, which is heavily featured on the album. While it is sometimes hard to discern what exactly the lyrics are speaking about, they are nonetheless elegantly poetic. This is a great debut album and I am looking forward to seeing what Deas Vail will produce in the future.

While not exactly a return to form, the first studio record since 1983 by the classic Styx trio of Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, and James Young will undoubtedly please hard-core fans. There's nothing here on the level of "Come Sail Away," "Miss America," or "Lady," but that trademark combination of thrilling, arty hard-rock sounds and gently swooping, full-blown ballads continues. Dennis DeYoung's crazily high-pitched voice still hovers admirably in the castrato range for the most part, though time has introduced a few rough edges. In grand art-rock tradition, the record's supposedly got something to do with futurist British scribe Aldous Huxley (one of classic rockers' favorites), but if anything will bother the listener, that's not it. Songs such as "Number One" reveal an attempt by the band to update their sound with newer variations on hard rock; the result is less than satisfying. When they stick to the old formula, as with "I Will Be Your Witness" and "While There's Still Time," it's like grunge never happened, which is what this nearly-30-year-old act are supposed to sound like. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs.......2006-10-05

1. I Will Be Your Witness. It takes a little getting used to, it was disappointing at first becasue it's not Styx-like, but I've grown to like it.

2. Brave New World. All around cool, although the Arch Allies version is preferred for me.

3. While There's Still Time. Sad, and beautiful. It made my friend cry
.

4. Number One. Another differant sound.

5. Best New Face. This one's "fun" to listen to.

6. What Have They Done To You. It's JY. That's basically it, there are better ones.

7. Fallen Angel. Interesting lyrics. I'm not too big on the music it self however.

8. Everything Is Cool. A good rocker. Kinda cheesy, but regardless, a cool song.

9. Great Expectations. Another differant feel. This time from Dennis.

10. Heavy Water. ROCKS!!! Funny lyrics, I love it.

11. High Crimes & Misdemeanors (Hip Hop-Cracy). This is an odd-ball. A lot of fans probably wouldn't like it.

12. Just Fell In. Another fun song by Tommy Shaw. Very upbeat.

13. Goodbye Roseland. This is pretty. However I got bored of it.

14. Brave New World (Reprise). This is basically a medley that sums up JY and Tommy's part in this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-09-21

This is Dennis DeYoung's last appearance on any Styx album as we know the tour woul be set up and he would leave due to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and not be let back into the band as he would be replaced by Lawrence Gowan.

Anyway This is a very well done album and their first with new drummer Todd Sucherman. Every song is very well done but my favorites have to be "Fallen Angel", "Best New Face", "I Will Be Your Witness", "Everything Is Cool", and "Number One". I really like those songs a lot. I do wish that there could have been more like this because CYCLORAMA just didn't meet it's potential and Lawrence Gowan's only real good accomplishment has been "I Am The Walrus" even though he does do a good job on the classics considering all things. BRAVE NEW WORLD was another new direction Styx was taking and it was going good.

But anyway this is a great album for any die-hard Styx fan. If your just getting into Styx try PIECES OF EIGHT or THE GRAND ILLUSION but if you been into Styx for a while this is a good album to have.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but a refreshing break from the pop scene.......2006-07-20

Styx was one of those bands that I "cut my teeth" on, if you will. When I was 5 or 6 years old, I remember listening to "Kilroy Was Here" all the time with my brother and sister, along with other albums including "Metal Health" by Quiet Riot.

Anyway, I was surprised to hear that they released a new record in 1999. Ironically enough, I bought an autographed copy of this CD at a concert of theirs at the South Dakota State Fair back in 2000. Regardless of what people say about them, Styx puts on one heck of a show. The only song they performed off this disc was "Everything Is Cool", which was their opener. The rest of their songs were their all-time classics that you can hear on their "Greatest Hits" package from 1995. Sadly, Dennis DeYoung was not part of the tour; he was kicked out before they went on the road. In fact, the only two "original" members were James Young and Tommy Shaw. That was slightly disappointing in the beginning. However, it quickly dissolved the more they played. Great sound!

Overall, this CD is pretty good for all intensive purposes. No groundbreaking tracks, and certainly nothing new. Then again, long-time Styx fans would expect nothing else. They mostly keep their traditional sound and song style, with some small experimentation in modernizing their stuff. My top tracks are "Brave New World", "Everything Is Cool", "Number One", and "Best New Face". It's not a CD to start with if your new to Styx, but it will be a nice addition to your collection if you've followed them over the years. It's too bad their 2003 follow up, "Cyclorama", was not near as good.

4 out of 5 stars THE LAST REAL STYX ALBUM.......2006-06-05

while growing up one of my favorite bands was thrilled to death
when the core of the original band reunited.even more thrilled they were doing a new album. great songs not enough DENNIS
but well rounded songs good balance of rockers and ballads.WHILE THERES STILL TIME beautiful harmonies by SHAW/and DEYOUNG.true styx sound.TOMMYS songs are pretty good not his best.J.Y.sucks as always. He always was the weakest link of the band. it was always best when he just played guitar.BRAVE NEW WORLD is a really good song as well as EVERY THING IS COOL.GOOD BYE TO ROSELAND is the best song on the disc.Should have closed the album there but SHAW and J.Y. had to ruin it with that crappy reprise. Then the egotistically combination of TOMMY SHAW and JAMES YOUNG fired DENNIS and STYX was and still is finished how do you get rid of the man who made the band.BRAVE NEW WORLD indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Brave New World ~ Styx.......2006-01-15

This album is pretty good, but the songs: High Crimes & Misdemeaners, Just Fell In and Brave New World(reprise) are bad, and if they were not on this album then I would surely give this album 5 stars. See how i rate the songs:

I will be your witness(8/10) - This is a good one, it has another sound then other Styx-songs, but I do like this.
(Tommy Shaw/Jack Blades)

Brave New World(10/10) - Very good song!
(Tommy Shaw/James Young)

While There's Still Time(9/10) - A very beautiful ballad. Dennis DeYoung sings so beautiful on this song.
(Dennis DeYoung)

Number One(8/10) - A good song, this is also a song that you don;t expect of Styx. But it sounds very good.
(Tommy Shaw)

Best New Face(8/10) - A nice swingin' song!
(Tommy Shaw/Jack Blades)

What Have They Done To You(8/10) - A good rocker.
(Tommy Shaw/James Young)

Fallen Angel(8/10) - A nice song, it has a very nice melody.
(Dennis DeYoung)

Everything is Cool(9/10) - A very good rocker with very stupid lyrics.
(Tommy Shaw)

Great Expectations(7/10) - A nice song with a catchy melody.
(Dennis DeYoung)

Heavy Water(8/10) - This is the heaviest song of this album. The stanza is peaceful, but the chorus is heavy.
(James Young/Tommy Shaw)

High Crimes Misdemeanors(4/10) - A funny song. I always skip this one.
(Dennis DeYoung)

Just Fell In(3/10) - This sucks even more the High Crimes Misdemeanors.
(Tommy Shaw/James Young)

Goodbye Roseland(10/10) - A great song to end the album! Why did they make an reprised version of Brave new world?
(Dennis DeYoung)

Brave New World reprise - They should not have putten this song on the album, cause Goodbye Roseland is a fantastic song to end the album.

So as you've read, most of the songs are good. The tracklist should have been:
1. I Will Be Your Witness
2. Brave New World
3. While There's Still Time
4. Number One
5. Best New Face
6. What Have They Done To You'
7. Fallen Angel
8. Everything Is Cool
9. Great Expectations
10. Heavy Water
11. Goodbye Roseland

If this was the tracklist, it would be a 5 star release!

1 out of 5 stars This may be their worst effort!.......2005-12-24

I have been a huge fan of the Rippington's. I began listening to them in the late 80's. This is long before this CD came out. I bought it and listened to it a few times and decided it wasn't going to remain in my collection. Their are a few good songs on it, but the techno-pop and remakes of other songs made me believe that this was the beginning of the end for the Rippington's good CD's. They have recovered some since that time, but this may be their worst effort!

4 out of 5 stars Freeman Enters Brave New World.......2000-09-24

While I applaud Russ and the band for entering a "brave new world" of music, I really like their other efforts much better. It definitely underscores the band's numerous talents, but I feel those talents were better displayed in other works. Leave the "brave new world" of urban contemporary and go back to the unique smooth jazz of the Rippingtons.

4 out of 5 stars wistful captivating & alluring.......2000-07-15

russ freeman and his formidable band the rippingtons have come up with another smooth jazz classic. like sipping on a cool chardonnay on a hot summer's evening this music slides into the very marrow of your bones. highlight is his cover of the 70s disco hit by the brothers johnson ain't no stoppin us now. it's totally reworked in a classic 90s upbeat groove.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Change.......2000-05-14

The thing I'll always love about The Rippingtons is that they're not afraid to explore different music. In this album they hint at rock in their normal songs and they have a couple R&B songs too. Russ Freemen (as always) tears up the guitar and Jeff Kashiwa is awesome on the sax. All this together with some cool bass by Steve Reid and Kim Stone and excellent drumming by Tony Morales - and you have Brave New World.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-08-23

I first heard The Rippingtons about 6 years ago on Jazz FM (UK). I really liked the smooth jazz sound but couldn't find any of their music in the shops here for years. Then I came across "Brave New World" in London and bought it. But instead of the really mellow music that I remembered, I found this album fairly monotonous and uninspiring. It isn't as musicically complex as I had remembered either. I am disappointed.

I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07

This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good.......2004-07-06

I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, specially the adagio........2004-01-28

I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07

Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).

So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.

2 out of 5 stars No So Great.......2003-10-29

Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack For a Great Movie!.......2006-04-26

This is probably one of the most complete scores you will ever find for an item, and the songs are all well-written and unique from each other. I will review a few specific tracks:

1. Main Title-The Brave Little Toaster has one of the creepiest intros, panning through the dark woods to find an empty cabin full of seemingly lifeless appliences. This haunting track works very well with it.

3. Blanket's Dream-I'm not keen on them leaving in the dialogue here, as you don't get the whole fantasy scene unless you've seen it. Still, Lampy and Radio's amusing lines are here, which is good.

4. The Air Conditioner Blows-For anyone who was terrified of this scene as a kid, this frantic track does the whole thing justice, with a grim ending.

6. Again, the dialogue and sound effects are left in, but they actually help the humor in this track. Lampy's voice is awsome.

8. City of Light-This is my favorite of all the songs. It's a bright and optimistic ballad-ish song when the appliences set out. They're all good singers, even though Lampy speaks a few of his lines. Very catchy.

10. The Pond-This one has to be heard to be believed. It's sound effects of the pond create lovely music, and the highlight is the opera singing fish (don't ask).

11. Toaster's Dream-I just have to say, this is a really scary track to accompany the scene that probably scared me the most when I was younger. That clown...

19. It's a 'B' Movie-This is a spooky number, and will remind you of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preformed by the junkshop appliences (and a bit by the core group), it's the first showstopper.

22. Into the City-A Beautiful instrumental version of City of Light.

23. Cutting Edge-A techno number sung by the mean appliences that replaced the old ones. It has great lyrics and sounds just like some commercials from that era.

25. Worthless-A disco style song belted out by the poor cars at the junkyard before they all meet their "deaths" at a trash compactor. Catchy and sad at the same time, and a favorite of many.

26. Finale-A seven minute long song. Ranges from hopeful to frantic to a happy ending.

27. End Title-A very happy song to end the soundtrack.

Buy it now. It's everything you've ever dreamed of on the edge...and more!
