Eileen Mager, soprano

Eileen studied voice with Marie S. Kraft at the Cleveland Institute of Music, with Julia LeVine in Chicago, and now works with John Merwin in Scottsdale. She began singing professionally in Chicago, moved with her husband to California, and then to Arizona in 1982. She is one of that rare breed: a recitalist. She is a leading performer for the Arizona Vivaldi Festivals, sings with the Arizona chamber choir Cantemus, and is a frequent solo performer in Arizona churches and concert venues. She was Artistic Director for the 2000-2001 Arizona Vivaldi Festival. Her repertoire is very broad - from opera to jazz, Broadway to folk, classical religious works to spirituals and gospels - and her performances have included works of more than 80 composers, in 15 languages.

Ellen Brown, piano and keyboard

Versatility is the word to use when describing Ellen Brown. A native of Ohio, she was educated in classical music and holds the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mount Union College, and the Master of Music degree from Arizona State University, but her musical tastes go far beyond the classics. She has performed in a wide variety of musical venues, including doing two-piano jazz concers with her husband Glenn Brown, accompanying for opera stars, jazz singers, Broadway shows, and classical organ concerts. She has arranged and accompanied for the McGuire Sisters, and for Metropolitan and New York City Opera singers Robers Hale, Richard McKee, and Patricia Miller. She is currently a professional church organist and choir director, and a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Phoenix College.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. This compilation of Peanuts tunes by the Vince Guaraldi Trio is outstanding. Everytime I play this, I can see all the Peanuts characters in my mind. It is fun to listen to at anytime of the year, and really brings back memories of my youth and watching Charlie Brown during the holidays. Guaraldi and company show their expert musicianship skills on these snazzy jazzy tunes.The holiday season isn't complete without this collection!

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

I searched for tickets for a Mannheim Steamroller concert, discovered they weren't coming. A friend suggested Medi. I said Who? I discovered Beautiful Music that just BLEW MY SOCKS OFF!! I bought all their CD's and have enjoyed them ever since. Medi puts vibrant life back into Christmas music!

I was introduced to this Christmas music recently and for some reason this music brings out emotion in me like no other Christmas music.This is not your typical arrangement of the 'usual' instruments. While I like those too, this music of Medhi is completely unique. All of their series of albums are worth mentioning, they are all Fantastic.

The blending of these instruments along with the variances of volume and the differences in tempo make these familiar Christmas songs take on a new life.

Joy to the World is the first song and this song truly makes it sound like the instruments are making a joyful noise. A very upbeat tune, with instruments you are not used to hearing. Turn the volume up so you can hear every instrument!


Angels We Have Heard on High - Almost a dance sound in this one, with some dramatic drums. A Flute sounding instrument that actually reaches that 'high' in the title.

I am not kidding you when I say that I have 4 copies of this CD. I have been known to play it when it is not even close to Christmas time. This album puts together some beautifully written pieces of music.Truly wonderful!

At Christmas time in my home, Medhi rules the sound system. I own all of his CD's, and I have been unable to choose a favorite. His unique blend of classical, rock and new age sound results in a truly magical experience that you have to hear to believe. Each album contains something for everyone, whether it be relaxing mood music, or a jazzed up version of "We 3 Kings." He includes many melodies with Renaissance touches, and the kids especially like his version of Rudolph , as you can actually "hear" Santa's sleigh fly from one end of the house to the other! This collection is a must for every home.

This is a great addition to the 1st Treasures and none of the songs repeat, which I thought was great. It rates up there with their other Christmas CD, it gives a wonderful variety of all my favorite Christmas tunes.

All of the songs here are nicely arranged and full bodied, but... Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - Now, who isn't familiar with this song? But I promise that you have never heard it sound like this. It begins with a real techno-funk sound; you don't recognize the song to begin with. About 15-20 seconds into it you will recognize it. The tempo to this one is not fast, or not as fast as we are used to hearing Rudolph. But an enjoyable song because of it's totally different sound here.

Jingle Bells - OK, what album is complete without one of the old standbys? But this is like no other Jingle Bells you have ever heard. I don't know the instrument that begins, maybe it is a keyboard, or the harpsichord, but you don't really recognize the tune to begin with because it is played in an atypical key. I can say that this is my favorite song on this album, it is a piece of work due to the arrangement of tempo and instruments. I love the tinkling bells in this one. A real toe tapper that everyone will enjoy !

I found this CD to be a really nice collection of Christmas music. It is just as nice as their other Christmas CD that I have purchased. I hope that they will make another one next year.

At Christmas time in my home, Medhi rules the sound system. I own all of his CD's, and I have been unable to choose a favorite. His unique blend of classical, rock and new age sound results in a truly magical experience that you have to hear to believe. Each album contains something for everyone, whether it be relaxing mood music, or a jazzed up version of "We 3 Kings." He includes many melodies with Renaissance touches, and the kids especially like his version of Rudolph , as you can actually "hear" Santa's sleigh fly from one end of the house to the other! This collection is a must for every home.

In my house we either listen to Bach, Mozart, Brahms, etc., or Sharon, Lois, and Bram. Our children have enjoyed them from the ages of 2 to 6, and still counting. As a parent I love them because they are fun to sing with, and each song has a bit of truth and education in it. Children sing-a-long music has come a long way since "Pop Goes the Weasel".

Sharon Lois and Bram are a wonderful and eclectic trio. Being a Canuck, I had heard of them. Having an almost fourteen month old, we have all gotten to know and love their music. We listen to them exclusively in the car as we only have tapes of their music. This tape is a great one though we like their nursery rhyme one even better.

This is one our favorite children's CD's...even after listening to it over and over! Why? First, it's made 100% for kids - it has lots of lively & silly songs and it encourages the kids to sing along by using kids in many of the tracks. It appeals equally to my 2 and 6 year old. Second, it's got LOTS of unique songs (that don't grate on your nerves!) that you don't find on nearly every children's CD so it doesn't get old too quick. Finally, it's fun for parents too! The songs are so silly that I find myself singing along and laughing right along with my kids. I think it's a must have for any parent who wants to add a quality CD to their children's music collection.

      I originaly found a different set of CD's by Sharon, Lois and Bram for just $3.00 and my son LOVED them. This CD is extra nice because it has not just Chanukah songs but general songs about winter. My mom loves Old King Cole. It's a great CD - great for the kids but sophisticated enough to not drive the adults crazy. Heck - I love it!

        We bought this tape a few years ago and now I want to purchase the CD. It has been hard to find. My kids really enjoy the songs about Hanukkah even though we are not Jewish.It makes them more aware of other traditions besides Christmas. The tape has some of the traditional Christmas songs and some that aren't as well known. It's a nice break from the same songs over and over again.Enjoyable!
