Bach: St. Mark Passion

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Fortunately for those musicologists and listeners who take special delight in the mysteries of lost or unfinished works by great masters, the music of Bach's St. Mark Passion, of which only the libretto exists, is largely reconstructible. Evidence suggests that the music primarily consisted of parodies, that is, preexisting music adapted to fit new texts. Some clever sleuthing reveals the probable--or definite--sources, which, according to editor Andor Gomme, are found in several cantatas and in the Trauer-Ode. Naturally, there are places where scholarly speculation is required, and Gomme provides details of his decisions in the extensive liner notes. The music he chooses is not all Bach. The unreconstructible recitatives and Gospel narrative sections are taken from the St. Mark Passion of Reinhard Keiser, a contemporary from whom Bach was known to have borrowed musical ideas. No Bach lover should be afraid of this very substantial, well-conceived, and expertly performed work. Besides being offered a lot of rarely heard and lovely music in new settings (the alto aria "Falsche Welt" is a wonderful example), we're also treated to some familiar and always welcome chorales and a refreshingly different traversal of the Passion story to set beside Bach's beloved St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion. --David Vernier

Except for one "previously unreleased" recording and two new ones, this is a compilation of segments taken from older Yo-Yo Ma CDs, perhaps to whet listeners' appetite to hear the entire records. The disc represents a triumph of performance over material. The program consists of short pieces and single movements of long ones and serves to display Yo-Yo Ma's extraordinary versatility, his spectacular instrumental and musical gifts, and his remarkable ability to invest everything he plays with the same commitment and emotional concentration. There is no logic to the sequence, except that it begins and ends with solo cello. Bach, whom Ma plays tuned normally when unaccompanied and tuned low with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, may justify the CD's title but seems out of place. Moreover, juxtaposing him with O'Connor and Piazzolla is jarring, though the Tangos are beautiful. The transcription of Dvorák's lovely E-minor Slavonic Dance, despite the participation of violinist Itzhak Perlman and his golden tone, sounds like a movie soundtrack: all bravura and cheap effects. The playing's the thing, and it is stunning, not only Yo-Yo Ma's, but that of all his collaborators, from vocalists Bobby McFerrin and Alison Krauss to pianist Emanuel Ax, Ma's duo partner of 25 years. Ax joins Ma for the Finale of Brahms's second cello sonata; that is what you may find yourself humming at the end. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars New Yo-Yo Fan.......2006-07-09

I had never listened to Yo-Yo Ma before (that I knew of) and then I was at a dance recital a few months ago. Two little ballerinas danced to "Simple Gifts" with Alison Kraus, and I had to have that song. I really enjoy playing this album when my family is just hanging out reading or playing with the baby in the living room. Each piece is unique and beautiful in its own way. Simple Gifts is still my favorite piece on the album, I only wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful!.......2006-06-04

I recently got this CD as a birthday gift. I've been wanting this CD for a while. The first track is a wonderful song in all reality the entire CD is a wonderful experience. The prelude by Gershwin is unique sounding with the cello. The jazz quality is still there and has a bit of classical influence intertwined among it. Yo-Yo Ma's recording of Simple Gifts is a good song and when they had the lyrics sung by Alison Krauss it was a wonderful choice. Her vocals matched the cello incredibly well. Track 8 is a wonderful song that I love to hear being played on the cello. For any person who loves classical music or cello music this CD is a good choice to buy. It will be well worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-08-20

While most people on this site see the "classic" in the title of the album as referring to classical music only, they are mistaken. Classic Yo-Yo refers to his style, not the genre into which his music choices fall. The list of tracks alone should have been a big enough clue that the music isn't all classical. Judging this album, or any album for that matter, on just its title is simply foolish. And while this is technically a solo album, the way Yo-Yo brings in guest artists to perform with him shows his flexibility as an artist. His version of Simple Gifts is so much more than a school chorus; it is an amazing cellist playing the accompaniment on a song that is meant to be sung.

On a more positive note, I found every track beautiful, from the elegant solo cello in the Bach cello suite to the haunting vocal line in the Bobby McFerrin piece. Yo-Yo Ma gathered a wide range of intriguing pieces to make this fantastic album.

2 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2004-02-10

This is a compilation of many different styles; look Yo-Yo can play bluegrass! Not really "Classic" Yo-Yo.

3 out of 5 stars Great if you're not familiar with Yo-Yo Ma.......2002-12-27

This CD is a good sample of what yo-yo ma has acheived in his musical career, if you want a more in depth listening of his talents than I suggest getting the simply baroque CD. The only thing that I didn't like about this cd was that the compositions were to mixed up in the genres. There was a bit of classical, some movie works, a great song by John Williams, and some of The Tango series music. If you would rather listen to one genre, get a CD that just has Classical or Contemerary, don't get a jack of all trades cd.

Philippe Herreweghe uses the second of Bach's four versions of the St. John Passion, the one from 1725, which substitutes some of the arias and the opening chorus, along with lesser changes. The result is somewhat more dramatic than the standard version, which Herreweghe recorded previously. Those familiar with the conductor's work will find his usual warmth, making the most of the lyric moments, but they'll also find greater sensitivity to rhythmic and dramatic thrust and a generally livelier approach. The singers are uniformly fine. Padmore is an unusually effective Evangelist, projecting the drama without undue overacting. Many will want this for Andreas Scholl's countertenor solos, which are first-rate, but the magnificent "Es ist vollbracht" will disappoint those familiar with the greater depth of renditions by contraltos like Maureen Forrester and Janet Baker. Bright-voiced soprano Sibylla Rubens is another attraction, singing with fervor, and the orchestra and chorus of the Collegium Vocale Ghent are outstanding. This attractively packaged set goes to the head of the class. --Dan Davis

4 out of 5 stars The best ST John Passion ever, but..........2006-09-06

This is far, the best ST John Passion interpretation I've ever heard, but! the usual first mov. "Herr! Unser Herrscher!" is missing in this "second of four versions" among the John's Passion by Bach. Needless to say, I was very disappointed, because one-third of the reason I bought this CDs was because I wanted to hear Herreweghe's interpretation of that particular movement. If you are planning to purchase this recording with similar expectation, you will be somewhat disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The "Other" St. John Passion.......2002-03-07

Packaged similarly to his immortal release of the St. Matthew Passion, Herreweghe follows-up with the St. John Passion, and this recording has all the beauty and drive and fire as it's sister recording.

Released just last month (Jan 2002), it has already achieved critical acclaim. The Collegium Vocale is such an astounding choir and the Herreweghe's orchestra is admirably full of clean virtuosic ability. They are complemented by Harmonia Mundi's unbelievably clear sound quality.

Out of a sea of boringly similar recordings of Johannespassion (Gardiner, Koopman, Harnoncourt, etc.) emerges a once-again triumphant Herreweghe. The tempos are intellegently chosen and once more, his approach of legato is what makes this new set such a success.

It is lively and contemplative. It is never tedious for a minute. Herreweghe has a very nice approach to music of any period.

The Evangelist is very good, but most would be wondering of the whereabouts of Ian Bostridge. After all, he was the star of Harmonia Mundi's St. Matthew Passion. We will all miss him whole heartedly on this recording. Alto Andreas Scholl is again a winner. His heartwrenching/heroic "Es Ist Vollbracht" is my favorite (next to Ingeborg Danz on Rilling's Johannespassion).

The Johannespassion was written originally in 1724. This is the version we hear today. A year later, Bach, unwilling to release to the public the same Passion two years in a row, attempted to compose an oratorio Passion with a libretto by Picander. Sadly, he was so pressed for time he ended this endeavor before it started. Instead, as a rather sneaky coverup, edited the Johannespassion, replacing the first chorus, last chorale, and four specific arias. The final product was actually much better and more dramatic than the original.

This record is of the second of four versions of the Johannespassion. Unfortunately, because of this, there is no powerful "Herr! Unser Herrscher!" to open the Passion. Instead we have the somewhat tranquil chorale setting of "O Mensch Bewein dein Suende Gross" that we usually hear concluding the first part of Matthauspassion. Once we get over this oddity, hearing this chorale arrangement to open Johannespassion is a wonderful and welcome surprise.

*BUT* don't let this bother you, because we also gain four better, but rarely heard, arias that Bach omitted from the final version and replaced with the less eventful arias we often hear in the standard version. My favorite "new" aria is "Himmel Reisse" for Bass and a soprano chorus that sings the chorale "Jesu, Deine Passion" at the same time. This Part One aria has the same effect as its Part Two counterpart "Mein Trauer Heiland" scored also for bass and chorus. They fit together in the score like puzzle pieces. In effect, this version, presented by Herreweghe, is more united and complete in sound.

We also get the Bach's original Finale Chorale, "Christe, Du Lamm Gottes." Hearing the Johannespassion that Bach edited for 1725 is a great way to explore Bach, especcially with this new sure-to-be classic standard set.

This is a very good Box Set of one of the most perfect and consistently satisfying Johannespassions I've heard. STRONGLY Reccomended!

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

Album Description

Bach's St John Passon shows the composer's towering imagination at its most intensely dramatic, moving and vivid. Christ's trial and death are retold by soloists acting as participants in the event but also meditating upon it in reflective arias; the choir's role alters from rowdy mob baying for crucifixion to that of a congregation singing quiet, redemptive chorales. Criticised in its day for being too operatic, the work is now revered for its originality, for its faith and above all for its incomparable beauty of musical thought. The new reading is a testament to the vitality of the choral tradition: all soloists are former or current members of New College Choir. It also presents a new level of authenticity, not only with period instruments but also with boys' voices as Bach would have used at St Thomas in Leipzig.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Budget-Priced St. John Passion.......2003-12-15

Naxos doesn't usually record large works twice, but this is their second St. John Passion, the earlier one being by the Baroque Scholars and a fine one. This one has the unusual feature of being almost entirely a product of the music scholars of New College, Oxford. The choir is the New College Choir (SATB 14,4,4,5), using boy trebles and altos (as Bach did at St. Thomas Church, Leipzig). The soloists are all graduates or current members of the the college. The instrumentalists, using historically accurate instruments and performance practice, is the so-called 'Collegium Novum' (Latin for 'New College,' get it?), an ad-hoc group led by the well-known baroque violinist Alison Bury and put together for this recording, so it could be called, I suppose, the 'New New College.' The conductor is Edward Higginbottom, who has been director of the Choir since the mid-1970s.

One might think, since this is something of a special performance, gathering together current and 'old boy' singers, that it was something of a vanity project, but in fact it holds its own with other HIP performances of Bach's Johannespassion. It is sung in German and the booklet provides a German-English text. The Evangelist is sung by the fine tenor James Gilchrist (a treble in the Choir in the 1970s). Christ is sung by bass John Bernays (New College 1986-1990) and Pilate by bass Eamonn Dougan (New College 1993-1996). The other soloists are the noted countertenor James Bowman (boy alto 1960s), tenor Matthew Beale (1993-1996), bass Colin Baldy (a vocal coach at New College in the 1990s). The soprano soloist is a remarkable treble currently in the New College Choir, Joe Littlewood. He deserves special mention because of his intelligent musicality and sweet, true voice.

Higginbottom writes a few sentences to explain his decision to use boy trebles and altos, unlike some otherwise HIP performances, and goes on to defend his use of more than one string player per part, the latter being quite a trend in Bach recordings, witness the fine recent St. Matthew Passion conducted by Paul McCreesh. He notes that Bach had access to ripienists, saying 'provided Bach's counterpoint is clear, there can be no objection.' I tend to agree. I like the one-to-a-part performances I've heard, but I also am old enough to still love an occasional wallow in the old Richter performances of this and similar pieces. As far as I'm concerned, Bach is Bach and what matters is the musicality of the performance. On that account, this recording has no worries. It is presented as a dramatic whole, which is certainly appropriate since the Johannespassion is a sacred opera in all but name. The tempi are well-judged, the singers good, the instrumentalists (including continuo players cellist David Watkin and organist Ryan Wiggleworth) alert and flexible. Overall the style is somewhat light except for the dramatic points, as in the turba choruses.

This is a fine budget-priced St. John Passion and although there are other wonderful recordings out there (including my old standby in English with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears) it can more than stand on its own merits. The sound is just a smidgen less than the best available, with some minor distortion in loud choral passages.

5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly good.......2007-01-18

If you're interested in reviewing a fine selection of Bach's music for young voices, this is it. Included are numerous choirs performing choral pieces along with an equal number of solos. The age and quality of the original recordings is a minor issue to me, though it may matter to others. A few bucks brings a lot of Bach.

4 out of 5 stars Bach by Leonhardt and Harnoncourt.......2005-03-16

Good stuff. I have many of these peices separately in other CDs of Bach's cantatas under the direction of Leonhardt and Harnoncourt. The boy sopranos in this cd are wonderful. Great balance between instrumentalists and vocalists is a hallmark of the Harnoncourt/Leonhardt style. I highly recommend this CD.

I welcome feedback on this and all reviews at wstrnlibwarrior@yahoo.com

4 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this singing.......2002-11-30

These are undoubtedly beautiful perfomrance, notably on the choral works. The tempo isn't too fast nor too slow, and the balance between "authentic" and modern use of intrumentation is nearly ideal.
However:
Shopper, you may not be aware of this but Harnaocourt/leonhart (the conductors of this album) have produced a nearly comprehensive 60 CD bach cantata set. So why did they choose these oft heard cantatas when there are several performances in their collection surperior to these. I highly recommend listening to their cantata no.80 (not found on this CD).
All in all this is a great CD.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if you don't already have these!.......2001-02-17

The quality of these pieces and performances is exceptional (assuming you like the 1970s-style attempts at authentic performance). This disk was the first of my Harnoncourt / Leonhardt purchases; unfortunately, every single one of these is now also sitting in my rack inside the (complete) cantata from whence it was taken. All sung in German, of course, except for the B minor mass, which is sung in Latin.

But everyone must start somewhere, and this is a fantastic place to start. Among other things, it contains (numbers from):

* The Matthew Passion

* The Christmas Oratorio

* Cantata 147, which contains "Jesu Joy of man's desiring"

* The B minor Mass

* My Heart ever Faithful (Mein glaubiges Herze) - lovely.

It's a great gift idea for the subversion of friends and family who seem on the brink of becoming Bach afficionados, especially if they like choral/vocal music.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2000-12-04

If you enjoy the music of Bach and/or the sound of boy sopranos then you will enjoy this CD. It presents some of Bach's best and best loved songs, sung with expert precision by some very fine boy sopranos--a few of them have truly beautiful voices, and all of them are good. There is a good balance of solo pieces and chorales sung by men and boys together. One word, though: if you are accustomed to British or American boy singers then you will find these continental European ones something quite different--the boys are trained in a style more similar to opera singers and their voices are have more vibrato than their English counterparts--the sound is perhaps less "angelic", but fuller and richer. This is a worthy purchase for any true Bach fan or someone who really appreciates the beauty of an unchanged male voice. Top-rate quality of singing throughout.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2005-01-05

For the purist, this probably will not work. It is not an attempt at a thorough reconstruction of the St Mark as performed by Bach at Leipzig, and does not pretend to be. But the music that is *known* to have been used in this particular Passion setting is now heard completely in context of a Passion performance. Rather than create spurious music for the 'missing' parts, the performers use music that was in existence at the time, and very likely known by Bach. Keiser, the composer whose music is used to fill out the missing recits and choruses, is not in the same league as JS Bach, but he is none-the-less a good composer whose music is worth hearing (Keiser's St Matthew Passion is a wonderful piece). But it is easy to tell where Bach leaves off and Keiser begins, and there are some odd key relationships that I doubt JS would have used (one Keiser recit that ends in g-minor leads to an aria by Bach in b-minor).
That being said, it should be noted that the performances are extremely well-executed, and the opening movement, "Jesu, geh zu deiner Pein," (music by JS Bach) is worth hearing for its own merits.
If you have good recordings of the two authentic Passions (St Matthew and St John) this is an excellent way to round out your collection.

James Bowman is a great singer, and one of my favourite performers. One can listen to his CDs over and over again, without tiring.

He feels at home in both English songs and other languages. This CD is a "summary" of some other collection CDs of him.

ýIN SHORT: Good buy for lovers of vocal music, or the baroque and classical. If you don't know his singing, you're missing a lot, and this CD is a great start.
