Edward Elgar was a prolific and influential choral composer, most importantly through his works for England's choral festival competitions. Many of the 23 selections on this program--some of Elgar's finest compositions in any medium--were competition pieces, and they show the full range of the composer's imagination (the weird and wonderful "Owls"), mastery of text-setting ("The Prince of Sleep"), and choral technique ("Death on the Hills"). Most of these "choral songs" (a friend convinced Elgar that the term part-song didn't properly reflect their size and quality) are rarely heard today--a great and unjustifiable neglect. In recognition of Elgar's preference for large choirs, these performances are delivered by a chorus "of symphonic proportions," resulting in robust sound and remarkably sensitive interpretations of complex music, but with some sacrifice in clarity of internal lines. Among the highlights are the rousing male-voice choruses "The Reveille" and "The Herald," along with masterpieces such as "Go, Song of Mine" and "There Is Sweet Music." --David Vernier

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

Someone shoot that idiot with the popgun.......2002-06-07

An essential part of the experience is the audience participation - clapping in time to the Sailor's Hornpipe, bellowing out the chorus of Rule Britannia, the amazing sound of 7,000 people singing Parry's Jerusalem, even the occasional hoots, bangs and other interruptions (as long as they're occasional). It's important to capture this, otherwise all you get is a concert.

Unfortunately this recording seems biased towards the audience. The orchestral sound was muddy, but every pop, squeak, hoot from the audience was crystal clear. Towards the end I was hoping that someone would strangle the idiot with the popgun who was sitting to the right of the auditorium, and interrupting all the quieter passages.

Oh well - put it down to the acoustics of the Albert hall.

I still enjoyed the recording.
