Album Description
Love Divine, Illumine Our Darkness, a recording of the 2001 St. Olaf Christmas Festival is also available on DVD.

The first St. Olaf Christmas Festival was a Christmas program for the college community planned and directed by F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the St. Olaf music department and the St. Olaf Choir, in 1912. Involving both choral singing and worship, the first festival reflected the same outgrowth of Christian conviction that the festival continues to celebrate today.

Now under the artistic direction of Anton Armstrong, the St. Olaf Christmas Festival involves the five conductors and nearly 500 musicians from the magnificent St. Olaf Orchestra and five of the college’s choirs — the St. Olaf Choir, Chapel Choir, Manitou Singers, St. Olaf Cantorei, and Viking Chorus. Over 16,000 students, alumni/ae, and friends of the college attend the four performances given on campus in early December, and thousands of others tune in to public television and radio broadcasts across the country.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars magnificent lush seasonal music.......2006-03-24

My favorite piece is "Lost in the Night," but this concert offers that plaintive cry for Jesus' return in a spare, elegant piano-backed performance. But from beginning to end, every piece is a jewelled masterwork of differing choral styles and eras. What a pleasure to listen to this all year, bringing the festive, and spiritual meaning of Christmas to me everywhere I go. One can imagine the vaulting auditorium, the candlelight, the young faces of the gifted choral groups, and the angels hovering overhead as Christ's birth is celebrated, along with a passionate plea for His Second Advent.
