Music for Maundy Thursday

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Musica Contexta was formed by Simon Ravens (a former assistant to Andrew Parrott) specifically to present Renaissance music in context--that is, in the sort of musical setting (e.g., a liturgy) for which it was conceived. Their auspicious debut record for Chandos re-creates a portion of the Sistine Chapel's legendary Tenebræ services for Holy Week. They follow each lesson (taken from the Lamentations of Jeremiah) with a plainchant responsory and frame each Psalm with its plainchant antiphon. (This practice really does give Palestrina's polyphony some breathing space, keeping it from becoming monotonous.) They add ornaments in the Benedictus and Miserere, as was standard at that time and place. Most importantly, they give Palestrina's sweet, sad, soulful lamentations the performance they deserve. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2007-05-30

I work in Mexico, and have been to the cathedral where Padilla first transferred his notes into a vocal symphony. The context of the late colonial / early historic period in Mexico was a tearful time in the history of this country, and Padilla seems to have captured the beauty and depth of religious passion that prevailed at this time. This modern recording brings back to life the times of colonial Mexico, that have literally not been heard for hundreds of years. Ruttenburg did a supurb job with his vocalists, and with the high fidelity recording.

3 out of 5 stars A Mislabled CD... "Mexico"???? In the mid 17th century????.......2006-09-09

"Mexican Baroque"?????? The conductor (Rutenberg) refers to Padilla as the "Monteverdi of Mexico"... that is laughable! Mexico was not a country until 1821. Padilla arrived in "Nueva España" or "New Spain" (part of what is now modern day Mexico) in 1622. Padilla was Spanish and he composed the music heard on this CD in what was then a Spanish colony. Sounds like Rutenberg is trying to rewrite history ie. prop up Mexicans to make it sound like they have a rich cultural history or something to that effect. Funny.

5 out of 5 stars Flowering of the Mexican Baroque.......2000-01-07

To the uninitiated, the quality of choral music composed and performed in Mexico during the first half of the 18th century is astounding. Spanish-born composer Juan Gutierrez de Padilla was thoroughly versed in the "a cappella" style of the High Renaissance before moving to Mexico. Once there he may have felt like Haydn during his years in Eisentadt: voluntarily exiled to musical backwaters where he was free to experiment and nurture his unique musical personality. Careful listenings to this excellent recording reveal some exquisite compositional characteristics of the nascent Baroque, but the overall impression is late Renaissance, in all its glory. Conductor/producer Peter Rutenberg has shaped Padilla's music -- much of it for double choir -- beautifully. Phrases are finely modulated and dynamics enhance their direction. The straight-tone intonation of the Los Angeles Chamber Singers' Cappella is spot on: you could drive a truck through some of their final chords. And the rhythmic interplay between duple and triple -- so important in any performance of Renaissance polyphony -- is carefully interpreted throughout. In all, this fine recording is a welcome introduction, to quote Rutenberg's well-written liner notes, to "the first flowering of Mexico's Golden Age in a garden that was to reach full bloom with the music of Manuel de Zumaya and Ignacio de Jerusalem 100 years later."

5 out of 5 stars Textured Beauty.......2000-01-06

Amazing music. Wonderfully performed. Extra fine musicality and taste

5 out of 5 stars Padilla: Music of the Mexican Baroque.......1999-12-31

if you haven't heard it, you don't know what you're missing. It's exhilarating to hear 8 part a capella music performed so impeccably. My favorite piece is #7 "Circumdederunt...". It is so pristine, gives me goosebumps. Too bad there's no sample to hear.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection.......2006-01-30

For the newcomer to classical music, as well as for the experienced listener, this collection is spectacular. All the selections come from works of supreme beauty and genius. A true gem of a recording at a bargain price.

4 out of 5 stars Good disc of choral music for beginning classical listener.......2003-09-17

This disc contains short works and movements from bigger works by famous composers from the Renaissance era (Allegri and Palestrina), Baroque era (Bach and Handel), and the Classical era (Mozart). Most of these works are well known among seasoned classical fans and some have achieved the status of being overplayed (Handel's "Messiah," Bach's "Mass in B minor," Allegri's "Miserere mei," Mozart's "Requiem," and the original choral version of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," usually heard in an instrumental arrangement of some kind).
Some of these versions are not quite at the level of many more famous recordings, but I think they are decent enough if you're not ready for an entire work.
Sampler discs like this one will most likely not appeal to hard-core classical fans, but this disc should be perfectly satisfactory for someone who is looking for a cheap overview of some great choral works of the 17th and 18th centuries. Lastly, some sampler discs don't have full movements, only snippets. This one contains the full movements.

5 out of 5 stars Just a little bit magical.......2005-10-19

The King's Singers have been in decline of late. Let's not mistake this statement for one in which I say, "it's crap." What I mean is, most of the more recent King's albums haven't had the same sort of cohesive synergy which characterized their very first albums back in the Carrington-era incarnation of the group. Very very good, probably better than anyone else on the scene; but not quite as good as the King's Singers of 1976 or '77 (I forget when they actually started).

They are now back to fighting trim.

The Carrington-era group was not quite as aggressive in terms of individual vocal production as they are in this album, which is fine, a different ethic is at work here. A large portion of blame for the new and wonderful sound can be laid at the feet of new countertenor, Robin Tyson, who seems to act as an anchor for the upper end of the group's sound just as the equally wonderful Stephen Connolly has done for the bass end of the scale for many years now. The group's musicianship has never been so forward, yet so...well... musical, as it is here.

And then there's the material... Gesualdo is one of those lurking genuises who hide in Renaissance repertoire. He's always there, just overlooked more often than is fair. I think of what Bach must have been before Mendelssohn reintroduced him to the world--then I think of Gesualdo. The King's drive straight for the odd little turns that populate Gesualdo's music and reveal them in ways which I have not experienced before.

In short, this album is unearthly perfection.

Following the conquest of what is now Mexico by Spanish explorers, soldiers, and churchmen, missionaries began to establish churches and missions in cities and remote outposts. It was inevitable that in time, musicians were imported from Europe to fill the churches' ongoing musical needs. As cathedrals were built, cathedral music and choirs to sing that music followed. The four composers represented on this disc lived during the 16th and 17th centuries, with only one of them, Francisco López Capillas, having been born in Mexico. The others came from Spain where they developed their compositional styles under the influence of masters such as Morales and Victoria. The most surprising thing about hearing this very sophisticated music is that it's not better known and more frequently recorded. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, haunting melodies.......2000-08-18

These selections rival any Baroque choral music written by the European masters. We owe James O'Donnell a debt of gratitude for making such a superb recording of pieces which might otherwise have remained unknown.

5 out of 5 stars Saced music in colonial Mexico.......1999-02-23

Sacred music in the Spanish colonies was a tradicion brought from Europe,by the Spaniards who settled in the new world. The pieces in this recording were once part of religious celebrations in Mexican cathedrals, most notably those of Puebla and Mexico city.Among the composers featured in this recording are Hernando Franco who is one of the earliest composers among others to arrive to the New World, and Francisco de Padilla whom I concider the greatest composer of this period in the New World.Francisco de Padilla is also known today for some of his secular music.Another great composer in this recording was Antonio de Salazar who like Padilla also wrote secular music. In this recording Mr.O`Donell does an outstanding job the selections are wonderful, solemn, and beutiful. The chants are for different liturgical days of the year. This is indeed a five stars recording*****

          Album Description

"This is what recording should be about ... excellent performances and recorded sound ... beautiful and moving." -GRAMOPHONE

Scholar, mystic, priest, singer, organist, and composer - six persons all rolled into one and that is, quite simply, why Victoria was the most outstanding composer of the Spanish Renaissance. His music, highly dramatic and emotional, fully reflects the heartfelt passion with which Victoria wrote for the church. These performances are of new editions, specially commissioned for this series, and thus never before heard on disc. Authoritative liner notes by the eminent musicologist who made the editions.

5 out of 5 stars Well deserved of Rosette.......2005-06-13

This CD earned a rosette from the Penguin guide, and deservedly so. The sound quality, as usual for a Naxos release, is perfect, and the performances are wonderful.

My only complaint, and I guess it could definitely be a big minus for many, is the lack of text and limited notes.

Of course, Naxos is a budget label and it's assumed that liner notes and texts will be limited to keep down costs. Just keep this in mind when purchasing.

          3 out of 5 stars Okay as a sampler.......1999-01-23

This CD doesn't include texts (unusual for Naxos, despite the bargain price). This isn't a major problem as anyone can download the whole text of Lamentations from any of the several sites offering the Vulgate on the Web, but you will still need patience and a quick ear to work out which track corresponds to which set of verses.

The best versions of the Lamentations are probably Hilliard Ensemble on ECM for Tallis, Tallis Scholars for White, Herreweghe for Lassus.

The contrast of these solemn texts with the very high, very young- sounding boys' voices gives a strangely ethereal quality to the music. Victoria wrote his 18 Responsories to be performed in three sets, according to Church custom, during the services of Holy Week. The music would not have been heard straight through as we have it on this recording, but its presentation in this form allows us to fully appreciate its unified construction and emotional impact. Except for some overexuberant singing from the tenors in the "Tenebrae factae sunt" section and occasional loss of blend in the trebles, this is a delightful, atmospheric recording. It sets the proper mood for Victoria's thoughtful, reverent, and moving accompaniment to these all-important observances in the liturgy of the Christian Church. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Solemn, Passionate, Sacred Renaissance Music by Victoria for Holy Week and Easter.......2007-04-07

Every Holy Week I listen to the Tenebrae Responsories by the great Spanish Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), which are so appropriate for this most solemn (and ultimately joyous) season on the Christian calendar. This 1987 Hyperion recording by the Westminster Cathedral Choir under David Hill is a particularly fine one, eclipsed only by the legendary 1959 Decca recording by the Westminster Cathedral Choir under George Malcolm, reissued more than once on the London label.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2001-09-11

I don't know how to put this in words. I never knew this composer existed before hearing this cd but I will be doing some research to find out more. This is a beautiful, powerfull experience. The recording is simply outstanding. Remarkable clarity and presence. Thank you, Hyperion!
