Artur Schnabel: Sonata for Violin & Piano; Sonata for Violin Solo
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
If you're looking for an intellectual challenge, here it is. Schnabel, who was renowned for his penetrating performances of Beethoven, wrote music of amazing difficulty. The Sonata for Violin Solo, composed in 1919, runs three-quarters of an hour. After hearing it several times, I'm still certain I don't understand it. Yet there are such interesting things going on that I want to understand it, despite its forbidding facade and high dissonance quotient. The Sonata for Violin and Piano isn't much easier, just shorter. At least Arte Nova makes it easy to investigate for yourself, with first-rate performances and recordings at an amazingly low price. --Leslie Gerber

Album Description
Some of Franz Schubert's most popular scores lie in the realm of his chamber music, which the composer introduced to the world along with his songs in intimate Viennese gatherings dubbed "Schubertiades."
This newly repackaged four-CD andante anthology serves as a virtual Schubertiade, as it showcases Schubert's chamber gems via classic recordings by some of the pre-war era's greatest musicians. The performances include, among others, Fritz Kreisler and Sergei Rachmaninoff in the "Grand Duo," Adolf Busch and Rudolf Serkin in the C Major Fantasie, the Cortot/Casals/Thibaud Trio in the B-flat Major Piano Trio, and the Pro Arte Quartet with Anthony Pini in the String Quintet. The rare vintage 78s were digitally remastered by Art & Son Studio in Paris using the 24-bit "CAP 440" technique.
In its redesigned edition (with new slipcase), the deluxe 96-page book contains evocative images of the composer and rarely seen, painstakingly presented photos of the performers. The expanded texts in English, French and German include an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Page, an essay by Paul Turok, and detailed artist bios from "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians."

Tetzlaff/Schnabel.......2000-06-26
Simply superb music and equal-to-it recording quality.
Christian Tetzlaff and the 20th Century.......2000-06-13
Although Christian Tetzlaff has done an amazing job with the repertoire for Bach and Mozart (those recordings are impossible to find and absolutely DIVINE!) its easy to see why he is clearly the master of 20th century violin repertoire. His technique is refined and is intonation is impeccable. But beyond all technical considerations his emotive qualities are first rate. 20th century music is not the easiest genre to listen to, but Christian Tetzlaff definitely makes it accessible.

Remastered from the original lacquer aircheck source, this splendid 1948 Frick Collection recital preserves some of the most intense, probing chamber playing captured by a recording device. Joseph Szigeti's sustained phrasing in the slow movements transcends momentary unsteadiness elsewhere, while Artur Schnabel leaves an indelible stamp with his buoyant rhythm, trademark angularity, and pearl-like legato. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
A Very Good Reference.......2004-02-15
Even more enjoyable than Oistrakh: it's more erudite and more refined too. The recording made in '48 is only of marginally poorer quality than the former. The sound is quite accceptable and it sounds as though it was a live performance. And as a whole there is more music here, particularly so when set upon the inspiringly buoyant rhythm and pearl like legatos of Schnabel.
But for the violin part, Busch (with Rudolf Serkin) is even more appealing: it was so fresh, albeit that some may prefer Kriesler or even Tashner. And of course one can't possibly forget Szeryng.

Album Description
ARTUR SCHNABEL (1882-1951) wrote his Dance and Secret & Joy and Peace in 1944. In the chronology of Schnabel's compositions these two works for chorus and orchestra follow directly after Symphony No. 2 (CP2104). The genesis of these choral works, and the impetus which gave rise to them, is best described by quotations from three Schnabel letters, written from Gascon Ranch, New Mexico, and addressed to Mary Virginia Foreman. Some introductory comments are, however, in order.
The Robert Frost poem of Dance and Secret is "The Secret Sits"
"We dance round in a ring and suppose, But the Secret sits in the middle and knows."
ARTUR SCHNABEL wrote this Sonata (originally entitled Five Movements in the Form of a Suite) in the summer of 1919. It was first performed by Carl Flesch in November 1920 in Berlin. The third movement was printed as part of the supplement to the second volume of Flesch's Art of Violin Playing. Milton Babbitt speaks of a private performance in New York in the late forties at which both this Sonata, and the Solo Cello Sonata of 1931 were performed. Other than thatsilence. Of course there must have been the odd performance here and there but general knowledge of, interest in, curiosity about on the part of violinists specifically, or the musical public in general?
