(It's had my sub-woofers purring with delight at the deep bass extension managed by the recording engineers.) The programme is a hectic miscellany of chorale settings, large-scale virtuoso pieces, a swathe of spuriosities, rounded off with some pilfering from Bach's harpsichord repertory. Though some have curled their lips at Bowyer's policy of including so many peripheral pieces, to my mind it is one of the strengths of the series. While the early Toccata in D major, BWV912, require a lightness of touch ideally suited to the harpsichord, Bowyer nevertheless moulds it to the organ with nicely chiselled registrations and some deliciously incisive fingerwork. Jonathan Baxendale's superb insert notes carefully log for us what is officially in and out of the Bach canon, but the inclusion of spurious pieces such as the inventive 12-minute Partita Herr Christ, der einig Gottessohn, BWVAnh77 and the beguiling Trio in C minor (after Fasch), BWV585, need no excuses on musical grounds. And where else would we get the chance to hear them? They sound perfectly at home in this distinguished company. As a player, Bowyer is no exhibitionist. Compared with the sometimes manic flights of fancy of Ton Koopman, for instance, he is more measured, less liberal with embellishment and a more solidly practiced player. A biographical sketch included here reveals that he enjoys the odd pinch of snuff, and you can hear it in his playing – sudden 'highs' and unexpected bursts of interpretative sunshine which illuminate new facets of the music. There will be sharp intakes of breath all round at the way he transforms the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV894, from harpsichord warhorse to organ masterpiece with unwavering conviction and white-hot intensity. I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper.
Plenty of music for a moderate price as well.

I love the sound of this most unusual instrument, the harpsichord. Especially the fast intricately melodic songs. Very enjoyable. This "Greatest Hits" includes many compositions perfectly suited to this wonderful old predecessor to the piano. There's even a little funny trivia thrown in: on the song sheet is written: Q:"what did the famous conductor Sir Thomas say that the harpsichord sounds like? A: "Like two skeletons screwing on a hot tin roof" :)

This is a fun cd. BYRD, BULL, BACH ETC come through great Scarlatti bits sound like a flock of unhappy cows running of a field of burnt popcorn but those bits generally do unless played on the African Kalimba [or thumb piano] in Africa where I need not hear them.

This is a well engineered CD. Many featuring the harpsichord demand a level of equipment beyond that of any regular person with bills, which means this disk sounds just fine on a boom box. Everybody in the family will like some part of this disk `cept for the 13 year old whose lost to punk rock or hip hop.

I can't imagine a better sampler of harpsichord 'hits' played by one of the great stereo-era masters. A full complement of emotions is displayed here, from the most delicate and sparing texture to the most rip-roaring martial roar. If you're wondering what the harpsichord is about, or if you're already a fan and want a great sampler to play for your own delight and amusement, you cannot go wrong with this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Bring your SCUBA gear -- this is *deep*.......2001-08-21

Perhaps nothing surpasses the music of J. S. Bach in terms of being able to be enjoyed at different levels (e.g., the "sensuous," "expressive" and "sheerly musical" planes, to use Aaron Copland's terms). And probably nothing in Bach's music is deeper and richer in this regard than the Clavier-Ubung III that fills the bulk of these two discs (although the Goldberg Variations and The Art of Fugue are equally profound). I have purchased most of Kevin Bowyer's discs in this series and am pleased to report this volume is every bit up to his usual standards of excellence. This is music that truly rewards deep study so it can be fully appreciated at all levels. The liner notes are useful but all too brief. (What this music needs is a big, thick, detailed pamphlet in a box with the CD case, or a even a separate book to go with it.) Also, the writer of the liner notes is, regrettably, a good deal less informed about Christian theology than about the music of Bach, and there is some theological nonsense to be waded through. I can't wait to obtain and compare the recording of Clavier-Ubung III by Masaaki Suzuki, founder of the deservedly respected Bach Collegium Japan. I expect Suzuki's and Bowyer's renditions will make for some interesting comparisons, and Suzuki -- a devout and theologically astute Christian -- usually makes available extensive notes when he records and releases a new CD (Suzuki's *lectures* -- not to mention his performances -- in Japan are usually sold out). Only problem: as of this writing, Suzuki's rendition is not listed in Amazon's catalog; let us hope that will be rectified quickly! In any case, get this CD by Bowyer, and then make the effort to find out what's "under the hood" making this piece tick. Your efforts will be amply rewarded.

I'd consider BWV 582 and 904 among Bach's "greatest hits," and the Concerto in G (after Vivaldi) is delightful; these three pieces come after 2 CDs of the third part of the Clavier-Ubung, nice little short pieces for organ. Much to discover and delight here. Again, Bowyer's playing is a revelation, despite the "unsettling rubato" detected by our reviewer above. Highly recommended.

    Widor's organ music makes great listening for people who normally hate organ music. It's so tuneful, elegant, and "French" that you sort of forget all of the churchly associations of the instrument and simply enjoy the colorful sounds that Widor employs. This final volume of the complete organ works includes two delightful suites: the Three New Pieces, and a lovely suite of arrangements entitled Bach's Memento. Along with these two works, van Oosten also includes early versions of various movements from the organ symphonies, proving (as if such proof were needed) that Widor was as self-critical a musical craftsman as ever set pen to paper. A fine conclusion to a superb series. --David Hurwitz

    Perfectly performed versions of classic piano pieces for the advanced beginner/early intermediate piano student. Very useful and enjoyable to listen to for such piano students and pleasant enough for others.

    I purchased this cd after hearing one song from it on classical radio. Because it is a cd meant to show students how to play songs, the songs are played simply, without embellishment. They are lovely. This is a great cd to play when you want to relax and just hear simple melodies played beautifully.

    I am a piano instructor at a large conservatory where I instruct many younger players. This disc stays in the CD player in my studio almost constantly. Nowhere else will you find such a great collection of pieces which are in the standard teaching repetoire. The playing on this disc is very clean and clear, with great attention to each and every musical detail. My students have all benefitted from this fine recoding.

    I can't believe no one thought of this before. A major pianist has recorded the music that my children play. Now that my they have heard Mr. Shehori's CD, my children started to play at a noticably higher standard.

    Apart from the educational aspect, this CD is really a pleasure for me to listen to. I always loved these pieces (particularly Bach's Inventions and Schumann's Happy Farmer) Now I can finally hear them played by a great artist.

    I do regret that Mr. Shehori didn't record more sonatinas by Clementi. I hope to see these in future Series.

    While I am reluctant to ever rate a CD five stars, if not now, then when?

          This is a magnificent cd of Bach's Orgelbuchlein BWV 599-631 (the rest can be found on Vol. 4). Weinberger really knows his stuff! His style is quite serious, but I love him all the more for that. The Wagner organ at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway is one of the greatest organs in the world, IMO. It has quite a heavy, distinct pedal division for an organ of it's size, and is perfect for playing choral preludes with cantus firmus in the pedal. The sound is otherworldly and majestic. He slows down many of these pieces, and spreads them out horizontally, and it works SO well. BWV 602, 603, 610, 612, 615, 617, 622, 625...are some of my favorites on this disc, but I really love every single one. I have played this cd so many times it's not funny. His severe reading of Jesu Meine Freude gives me goosebumps, it's so stark and to the point. Right into your psyche he goes. The pedals in that piece are especially haunting.

            The capstone to this heroic undertaking is one of the best, a Art of Fugue second to none. a marvelous Goldberg Variations, the three discs are a feast of music.
            This whole project, a rarity in a world where it is not likely to see such effort, such effort not being guaranteed to make a profit, begins with a search for the perfect instrument, in a fine acoustical setting, with a genuine artist at the wheel, annd the whole thing engineered with care and most importantly, continuity. A series of recording made over a period of years risks being recorded in a spotty way.
            Here, each disc sounds just as any other disc in the series which is to say, superb.
            Bach wrote for the instrument of his time which we have come to know as the North German Baroque, of unequual temperament and with a strictly mechanical keyboard. Thus, these recordings give us authentic Bach in every way. Of Kevin Bowyers artistry nothing I can add here will make it gleam more.
            So, here is the Master; each disc is a separate program with no attempt to make it sequential, a wonderful way to fill out each program. The first cut is the Toccata and fugue in D so, if you are like me, a trifle weary of it's inclusion on every organ collection since the dawn of organ recording, you can proceed to savor literally tons of great slabs of sound, bass to shake the walls, but with the most incredible winds, transparency with what the liner notes refer to as "gravity", a useful term that describes the organ, a Marcussen in St Johns Church in
            Odense, Denmark. Bach esteemed the organs of Arp Schnitger and I think he would feel the same about this unpretentious three manual masterpiece in Odense.
            This series marks the end of my personal collecting of Bach organ works, a task dating back to the 78's by artists like Biggs and Albert Schweitzer. At 78 years of age I think I have gotten as much mileage out of my ears as possible and to finish this way, with this release makes me feel a great debt to Nimbus for going the extra distance to make it all possible. They ran into financial trouble but had the integrity and dedication to follow through, a rarity in the recording industry today.
            This set carries a hefty price tag. So does the Hope diamond and for the same reason, it is priceless.

            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Finish to the Cycle of Bach Organ Works.......2005-03-29

            This is the last Volume of Kevin Bowyer's Recordings of the

            Organ Works of Johann Sebastian Bach for Nimbus Records. Somehow

            he has managed over Seventeen Volumes to consistanly maintain

            a high standard for performing these works. Always using good

            taste in his choices of registers and what pieces to put together

            in the Volumes. Nimbus Records has as always provided the best

            possible sound for these recordings. In this final Volume

            Mr. Bowyer brings us one of the finest performances of "The Art

            of Fugue" on the organ that has been heard since Helmut Walcha's

            impressive recording. Many other works associated with the

            keyboard are heard on the organ to good effect some people will

            feel that Mr. Bowyer has done a lot of borrowing of "keyboard"

            works to fill out the set, but I feel that Bach would not mind if

            some of them were performed on an organ. I hope that someday soon

            Nimbus Records will be able to release the entire 17 Volume

            series as a boxed set. Granted it will be 29 CD's but then they

            are all worth it. I do not think this set of recordings will see

            an equal anytime soon.
