A silver classic!.......2007-04-05

This silver classic,released around fall 1981,features two Top 20 hits,the title track and CENTERFOLD. I first heard this album around then on my cousin's phonograph(he had an LP copy). The videos for the two aforementioned tracks frequently aired during MTV's(Music Television) first year on the air. The title track has such powerful,angry beats that I'd like to put on a pair of boxing gloves and hit a canvas bag with them! I have to admit that it would help boxing trainees. According to Norm N. Nite's Rock On Almanac,this album was one of 1982's top albums.

A classic '80s rock album.......2006-06-13

Anybody who watched MTV back when they actually played videos will remember the video for Centerfold and probably for Freeze Frame as well. These songs saw a lot of play when they came out. I didn't know anything about J. Geils Band at the time. I certainly had no idea they'd already had a string of records over the past decade. All I knew is that the few songs I'd heard were great.

Since then, I've picked up their first album. There is an amazing difference, but at the same time, it was clear for the first time how they arrived at the sound they made themselves famous with in Freeze Frame.

Most of the deep bluesy sound they had way back when are gone here, but there is enough left to give this album a sound of its own. Other great tracks here include "Rage In The Cage", "Insane, Insane Again", and "Flamethrower".

If you liked Centerfold or Freeze Frame, it's safe to say you will probably like the rest of the album. If you're a blues/rock fan, you'd probably like it as well as liking their earlier stuff. As far as '80s rock goes in general, this is a great one to add to your collection. I'm glad I finally did.

J. Geils Abandoned Their Roots For Pop? Then Some Of The Quirkiest, Most Inventive Pop Of Its Time!.......2006-05-08

With FREEZE FRAME, the ultimate party/bar band made a record far removed from the more purist blues moves of their earliest days. This is basically some good, very tuneful rock 'n roll. Nearly all of these cuts are really catchy. Many have a distinct 50's feel while others veer a little more towards experimental/avant-garde territory. The production is slick and solid - sometimes it's even pretty trippy. I was pretty darn young when this came out (middle school age), and of course I loved the big hits - "Centerfold," "Rage In The Cage," "Freeze Frame" and, of course, "Flamethrower" with images of the cheerleaders at school getting down 'n dirty to its downbeat seared permanently on my little brain.

Listening to this album today, I'd say it's unique enough to still sound great to the average listener, even though some might say it does sound kinda dated (as someone who's never been particularly concerned about what's current or fashionable, this isn't really a problem for me).

My impressions:

"Freeze Frame" - an instantly recognizable series of camera clicks sets this addictive tune in motion. Great keys, horns, and that swaggering doo-wop dip is so infectious. Still way cool in my book. *****

"Rage In The Cage" - this one cranks up the intensity level and it still gets my blood flowing. *****

"Centerfold" - ah, the biggest hit and a classic expression of male sexual fantasy life. This one's still a riot. I remember some tight-wads at the time thought that it was too dirty for radio, but they played the hell out of it anyway because it's actually pretty innocent (and of course it's a great song). *****

"Do You Remember When" - has this wistful, romantic quality that (some) chicks will dig. ****

"Insane, Insane Again" - this one's a trip, a hyper kinetic romp with vocalist Peter Wolf sounding like a real maniac. The band's excellent pop musicianship is in full effect as the song morphs into bizarre Walt Disney moves and a raging piano solo. *****

"Flamethrower" - maybe I'm biased, but I think this one still sounds sexy. It may be the best on the album. *****

"River Blindness" - strangely enough, this is my absolute favorite track on FREEZE FRAME, and I tend to listen to it much more than the others these days. This one ventures quite a bit further into left field than any of the other tracks do. There's something so evocative about this song - my brain has created an entire visual scenario to accompany it which I can totally get lost in when I'm lying in the dark, completely tripping out on it (the scenario is based on "Dungeons & Dragons" - another relic of my past I wouldn't mind revisiting). A trippy, intense, unusual track. Reaches a great climax. *****+

"Angel In Blue" - this one's got a great melody and it does rock although it's much slower and sadder than the other songs. It isn't really my cup of tea, but sometimes I'm in the mood for it. *****

"Piss On The Wall" - I recall playing this one in secret because I knew it definitely WOULD piss off my parents if they heard it (and I normally never felt a need to do that). It's a great rockabilly-style groover, really funny too. *****

Ya know, 50's rock 'n roll is still some of the best rock ever made and if you can appreciate that as well as have a taste for the slightly weird, you might really go for this album. An 80's classic.

Freeze Frame ~ The J. Geils Band.......2005-12-14

When I was young I heard the song Centerfold, I was totally surprised and I wanted to hear more of this band. And here is the result of my interest: FREEZE FRAME. It certainly an enjoyable item, but not 5 stars, cause I went into the Metal-direction a few months after this buy. But this album is quite good, you know. It's all happy pop music with a lot of keyboard, but it's nice. But when I'm really angry, I only get a headache of this. Anyway, all of the songs are good, except River Blindness. This one ain't really bad, but it's just too longwinded. And I really get a headache from this song (even when I'm not upset:). See my tracklist rating:

Believe the Hype.......2004-05-12

Don't buy into the clichéd idea that something commercially successful can't still be a work of genius, that's preposterous. Let's cut to the chase - this CD ROCKS THE HOUSE and has been legendary since it's release. Buy it, and you will listen to it many, many times. I couldn't give this CD enough stars.

Great Buy!.......2007-07-13

I loved the music more than the movie. This is truly an add for any collection of Movie Soundtracks or the like. Excellent blend of two cultures in a musical spirit.

Stunning... a disc that will get repeated plays.......2007-01-19

I don't usually listen to soundtracks as they are usually just a grab bag of unrelated songs that don't work so well together as a CD and therefore don't sustain my attention for very long. Some of the exceptions would be Samsara, Himalaya (a stunning CD), Baraka, 1 Giant Leap... and now Nowhere in Africa. There's beautiful symphonies, chanting, drumming, occasional bird sounds, native Africans and other effects that evoke whole range of moods and emotions over this powerful, inspiring and uplifting one hour journey. This academy award winning film really touched my heart and I think a good part of it was the beautiful score that accompanied it.

This is first class music that you will play again and again. If you enjoyed the film, be sure to pick up the soundtrack to Nowhere in Africa. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The sound is just so beautiful. This is the kind of music that is so soothing it could put you right to sleep. But the music is strong and has a message hear of what this family had to go through to survive and what they had lost when their families died when they refused to leave their Nazi Death Chamber. Sad but a must see (and listen)!

Best Foreign Language Film winner of 2002 from the Academy Award people and nominated by the Golden Globe is "Nowhere in Africa", from director Caroline Link ~ is captivating to say the least. From Nazi Germany one family escapes in 1938 to a new beginning in Kenya ~ from the autobiographical book by Stefanie Zweig is truly an amazing story ~ but wait it only gets better with an award winning score by Niki Reiser, the Swiss Composer who leads the Baset Symphony Orchestra inclusive of sweeping strings and native chants. Very short (less than a minute) tracks of a child singing with harp accompaniment is haunting.

Highlights ~ "NOWHERE IN AFRICA", rhythmic percussion interwoven with the string section, wind instruments join the pulse sating journey ~ "LOVE SCENE", piano solo as strings close in with solace and meditation ~ "JOURNEY THROUGH KENYA", opening sounds of a hoe-down and chants blend within each passage and counter drum beats within the percussion section.

Hats off to Higher Octave Music for sharing this wonderful soundtrack with all the "film-score-buffs" who look forward to unique and global world scores ~ this album will sit on my top shelf for continual enjoyment in the next days and weeks forthcoming.

remember when..........2007-07-15

ok for all the people who criticize this cd... Remember this was released originally in the early 80's. So judging it by todays standards isn't fair. The music is quite fitting to the time the originally record was released. OK it's not as good as a lot of their other albums but the cover artwork is wonderful, you should see it on the original 12 inch LP which I own. :) That's what I miss about records, cover artwork like this one. There are a few good tracks on there and for $11 what do you want... the cover, completing the collection and the few songs are surely worth that, right? Just remember when the album was released before judging it.

I remember buying this with hope & anticipation after their first album; and then I remember not buying another Depeche Mode album again until Music for the Masses. A Broken Frame was that bad. So I punished the band for 5 or 6 albums. Did I mention how bad this album is? The lyrics are simpy. The melodies are facile. "The Meaning of Love" is such an amatuerish effort. Only the first song (Leave in Silence) has merit. I believe this is also the album with a faked child's voice on one of the tracks intoning "around... and around... and around." Although that might have been on Construction Time Again. At any rate, it's so unbearably treacly that it's still stuck in my head, and it still makes me cringe even now. At this point the band also looked like "a bunch of seven-year-olds with giant heads," to quote a friend.

Later one Mode reviewer described the boys as "soccer hooligans posing as sensitive dweebs." I shouted "Amen to that!" thinking of this disk. This is not one of the finer moments for the band. It really did not look like our heros would recover from this simpering schlock.

Eventually DM showed their mastery of image and sound with both Music for the Masses and Violator. But it was a long journey from here.

WOUWWWT!!!.......2006-10-25

A trippy trip back through time to the early 1980's, with soft yet haunting sounds, danceable (sorta) beats, I wasn't around in the 80's (I was born in '83 and incidently don't remember much of my first month and almsot a half of my life), so perhaps I think it's creepy, 'cause this thing just isn't "normal" for me, I don't get to find or hear music like this very often. I've heard many songs from the early 80's, but none that are as creepy as this. Do it, my man!

Kind of an interesting listen.......2006-10-08

Well, there are reasons why "A Broken Frame" is worth owning (see the cover art?) and at the same time, reasons why you may not want to buy the album. It all depends on what you go for. This is my least favorite DM album, but it's not really that bad. It's good, but not consistently great. If you prefer the early synth-pop sound, you might like this one. If you like DM's more sophisticated and complex works, I'd avoid this one like the plague. I also don't know if a fan of the more rock-style "Songs of Faith and Devotion" would be big on this.

That being said, it's neither as catchy as the work that had Vince Clarke on "Speak & Spell" and it was before classics like "Some Great Reward," "Black Celebration," and "Violator." I try giving the band the benefit of the doubt since this was before they fully realized their potential. That being said, "ABF" is kind of a weird DM album. I used to not get why people laughed at DM, but with more "experimental" tracks like "Monument", I sort of get it. It's not that bad however. The worst stuff on here is either bland or not that memorable, the best stuff has qualities that make DM worth it. Some of it is unexplored DM territory. Other than the aforementioned song there is also the dub beats of "Sattellite" and songs like "My Secret Garden" are not very DM-like at all. But that's all that Gore's forefront to DM had changed in them.

The album's two best songs are the last two. "Shouldn't Have Done That" is a great track with Dave and Martin singing in unison, beautiful and with interesting lyrics. "The Sun and the Rainfall" is a fan favorite and once I hear that Alan Wilder (not with the band during the recording, but by the time touring came for the album) wanted to perform with DM at one fo the tours. The synths are great on that one and are more timeless than most others. "Nothing to Fear" is a nice instrumental track, much better than the boring one on "Speak." Buy this if you love DM or prefer a more early-80's synth sound.

However, if you're new to the band, I'd buy "Catching Up"/"The Singles 81>85" in favor before checking this thing out. The cassette and vinyl versions of the album don't have the filler "Further Excerpts from: My Secret Garden" or the extended "Leave in Silence" (the original version is on instead). Those two were actually B-sides that ended up on the CD version of the album.

The Best Depeche Mode Album ever made........2006-06-27

The Greatest Album ever made. No other album has the innocence and purity of this type of sound. It is truly a sacred album to me. Every song is incredible, remarkable and amazing. If Heaven truly exists then this has to be the music that belongs there. It is my past, present and future.

This CD is okay, but I don't find it as transformative as I've found other Sufi music, which sadly I do not know the names of those artists. The singer has a lovely voice and the instruments are well played but it definitely did not put me in the required state for whirling meditation which I have experience elsewhere.

Sensual and uplifting.......2004-07-25

This wonderful CD combines the sensual beauty of the middle eastern rhythyms with the uplifting, entrancing spirituality of the chants. Each of the three long tracks builds from a simple beginning, increasing in tempo and passion. This is a wonderful CD for meditation, particulary active meditation (the whirling of the title, dance, etc.). I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Sufi traditions and/or middle eastern music.

A beautiful, soulful collaboration.......2004-10-27

"Simpatico" is the one word that I think best describes Willie Nelson and Kimmie Rhodes, two Texas crooners whose voices and musical inclinations meld with startling beauty. Either singer can crest to the top or fall back into humble harmonies in this set of ten fine duets. The songs are mostly Kimmie Rhodes originals, though Willie contributes two ("Valentine" and "It Will Always Be") with the remainder of the set coming from sources as disparate as Tom Waits (the wrote title track), Rodney Crowell and Rhodes' partner, Joe Gracey. For folks who like understated, well-crafted American music with deep, deep roots and perfect emotional pitch, this record is the real deal. Highly recommended!

Haunting.......2007-01-05

First of all, I'm not one of those who believes Roddy's early work was his best. In fact, I consider later work such as "Frestonia" and "Dreamland" among his best. "Western Skies", however, even outshines these. From the hauntingly beautiful opening title track, this CD demands you sit up and listen to Roddy's emotive voice, poetic lyrics, and vituoso guitar playing. It's a shame he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves. When I went to a local US Virgin Megastore looking for this CD, after spelling the name to the clerk, he reported he didn't have it, and most of his stuff was "out of print". Oh well. On the other hand I kind of enjoy having this as my very own personal music. But do yourself a favor and buy this CD. If you're not captivated by it like I was, I can't help you.

Western Skies.......2006-07-04

Let me just start by saying that I have been a Roddy Frame fan since the release of his first CD back in 1983, "High land, Hard rain." It was a new sound, it was fresh and I just loved Roddy Frame's playful guitar work. The sound and feeling of the music was almost electric and the excitement in his voice was as if he had something to shout about. Ever since then I have collected every Aztec Camera album, single, extended version, b-side and collectible available. However I am completely disappointed with his last two efforts, "Surf" and especially, "Western Skies." It doesn't sound like he has anything to shout about anymore. He sounds uninspired and almost bored at times. If you are a fan of Roddy Frame you should definitely do yourself a favor and instead of buying, "Western Skies" get your self a copy of Aztec Camera's greatest hits instead. You'll be happy you did.

I have listened to Roddy Frame's music since 1983 when Aztec Camera's High Land, Hard Rain came out. He is an amazing singer/songwriter/guitarist. There has always been an amazing depth to his music, even when he was just a teenager starting out. He has matured over the years and so has his music. Like another reviewer said, He just keeps getting better and better. If there is anyone who deserves to have success it is Roddy Frame. Buy this album, buy all of his albums! You will not be disappointed.

best of 3 outstanding "solo" albums, North Star, Surf and now Western skies. Songs such as Bowie tribute "Rock god" and the best song that Roddy has written "world in worlds" define this album as a classic. Roddy gets better as he gets older

Gahan & Gore's Growing Pains.......2007-04-06

Considering this was 1982 and the band was left high & dry following Vince Clark's departure, I think A Broken Frame takes a lot of undue flack. Sure, Gore's lyrics leave something to be desired at times, but Depeche Mode showed they were capable of moving-on musically without missing a beat. "Leave In Silence", "See You", and "The Sun & The Rainfall" are highlights, and "Shouldn't Have Done That" is completely different from anything else the band had recorded to date. I think too often people forget that Speak & Spell wasn't without its faults (Anybody remember "Boys Say Go!"?), and while A Broken Frame wasn't Dark Side of the Moon, it did show musical progression and was evidence that the band was gonna be just fine.

A BROKEN FRAME is Depeche Mode's sophomore album and first without co-founding member Vince Clarke, who was the principal songwriter on the band's debut, Speak & Spell. With A BROKEN FRAME, Martin Gore filled this void by penning each of the album's ten tracks. A BROKEN FRAME, however, is not one of DM's strongest albums, even the musicians involved will own up to that sentiment, yet despite the songwriting being wildly uneven it still holds up as an enjoyable record.

Working against A BROKEN FRAME is it's indecision on kind of album it wants to be. Although sections on this album foreshadowed the direction of darker DM songs soon to come, there are interruptions of oddly upbeat songs such as "See You" (which I love), "The Meaning of Love" (tolerable), and "A Photograph of You" (one of DM's worst ever). "Leave In Silence" , "My Secret Garden", "Nothing to Fear", and "The Sun and the Rainfall", are all excellent, up-tempo numbers without diluting the band's spirit and distinctive sound. More intriguing are the songs that open up to the wider possibilities of DM's experimental side, such as quirky percussive sounds of "Monument" and the odd musical-detours and sound effects in "Shouldn't Have Done That".

Rhino's CD/DVD reissues of DM's backcatalog have been an eye-opener for fans in North America who have enjoyed altered versions of the band's early records without knowing that some of our favorite tracks were bonus material for Stateside audiences. The new reissues are based on the original UK releases. For A BROKEN FRAME this leaves a shorter "Leave In Silence" and the omission of "Further Excerpts From My Secret Garden". The bonus material, three B-sides and a half-dozen live selections from a 1982 concert, is a generous offering, but to regulate it to the DVD side only is frustrating. Couldn't the B-sides at least fit onto the end of the CD? I don't want to sit in front of my TV everytime to listen to this material.

The DVD documentary included, "The Beginning of Their So Called Dark Phase" (perhaps a bit over-dramatic statement for this early in their career), focus on the time leading up to and the release of the recorded music, including those awkward first steps in regaining their footing after Vince Clarke's departure. There are some funny "Spinal Tap"-ish moments in music video and TV performances that I'm sure the band would rather have their fans forget. It is also here that future DM member Alan Wilder enters into the picture, if only as a touring member in support of A BROKEN FRAME.

I can't comment on the audio quality of the audio mixes offered on the DVD, as I don't have the proper equipment to truly experience what the disc offers.

The so-called dark phase begins.......2006-12-01

This is Depeche Mode's second album but their first without Vince Clarke. He left shortly after the release of their first album and formed Yaz with Alison Moyet. Now the songwriting was left to Martin Gore and this album would mark "the beginning of their so-called dark phase".The three singles off the album were "See You","The Meaning Of Love" and the haunting "Leave In Silence". Other noteworthy tracks include "My Secret Garden", "Satellite" and "The Sun and The Rainfall".

Because the reissues are faithful to the original UK releases, there are a few noticeable differences between this album and the original 1990 release. First of all, "Leave In Silence" runs a little shorter(In fact the version on the 1990 CD was actually the 12-inch version). The one here is identical to the one on "The Singles 81>85". Also, "Further Excerpts From:My Secret Garden" has been omitted but a shorter version of it appears on the DVD. And for the astute listener, a small part of the intro on "Satellite" was trimmed.

The DVD features three additional tracks that were B-sides or part of 12-inch singles. The 27 minute documentary talks about the band continuing without Vince Clarke, the recruiting of Alan Wilder though he didn't participate in the recordings and the story behind the famous album cover.

Martin Gore was quoted as saying that this was probably their worst album but this is a very enjoyable album after a few listens.

A Broken Frame has always been my favorite Mode album. I'm only here to warn consumers of how poor this series of american 'remasters' are. For one, the song sequence and lengths are different from the original album. 'Leave In Silence', while left in its original six and half minute form on the original album, is cut down to a four minute plus version here. What the hell? Why would you mess around with the album versions fans are used to?? Additionally, the track 'Further Excerpts From My Secret Garden' is not even included at all. As if this isn't perplexing enough, the bonus tracks are only available on the DVD portion. What good is music playing out of your television? For those of us who don't have all of the perks and bonuses of a surround television system, we're just left in the cold. Granted, it states that the bonus material is only on the DVD, but there is no excuse for screwing around with tracklisting and time lengths of the original album versions. They pull this on the Speak and Spell album as well (the original album mix of "Just Can't Get Enough' is six and a half minutes while the new release contains an edit version).
A waste of money. The remaster isn't even that good!

Bizarre, creative, schizophrenic and experimental - Depeche Mode's best.......2006-10-08

It's unfortunate that the band do not have a greater affection for this classic album, because I have always found it their most daring, exciting and experimental album. It is a bit schizophrenic with the addition of some out of place bubblegum pop songs, but that adds an interesting contrast to the otherwise dark tone of the album.

The first thing released from "A Broken Frame" was the terrible single, `See You'. Though it is one of their biggest hits, I've always found it trite and tedious. It sounds like a schoolboy crush put to music, which it may be considering some of these songs dated from Martin Gore's mid-teen years. The follow up single, `The Meaning of Love', is another bit of fluff, though this one is far more tolerable - at least in a novelty way. To have these two singles represent the album is very misleading, and detracts from the excellent material surrounding them on the album. It could have been an obvious choice to select the similarly dreadful `A Photograph of you' as the third single, but thankfully the final single was a far better choice. `Leave in Silence' shows the wonderful, dark and somewhat gothic mode the band were in at the time. Simple music with dark lyrics made it a lasting and classic Depeche Mode single.

My personal favorite Depeche Mode song remains the amazing `My Secret Garden'. Some bizarre musical textures and haunting background vocals, along with the subject matter, always made this sound like the starting point for a great horror film.
`Monument' is probably the most experimental song on the album. The song revolves around a weird sound that sounds like a cross between dripping water and a bouncing ball, and includes more of the haunting feel of `My Secret Garden'.
In strong competition for most bizarre song on the album, `Shouldn't have done that' utilizes some more oddball synth sounds with marching feet and deadpan vocals.
By interesting contrast, that song segues into the most melodic song on the album, `The Sun and the Rainfall'. This song has remained a classic with fans over the years, and rightly song. It's got a great melodic, melancholy feel and is a strong way to end this wonderful album.

And has often been mentioned, the album cover for "A Broken Frame" is wonderfully brilliant, and perfectly represents the moody attractiveness of the album.

The DVD is the first time I've ever heard discussion of this album in detail. There seems to be some that respect it for what it was at the time - proof that there was life after Vince, and others that see it as an unremarkable but necessary stepping stone. They talk of how the band was falling into the teeny bop pigeon hole, appearing on any TV show even if not a very good choice. That is best exemplified by the hysterically awful bits they show of the band miming `See You' in a barnyard setting, each holding chickens. How embarrassing! There are also brief excerpts from all three music videos for the singles released from "A Broken Frame", none of which have ever been available on official video compilations. No, they are not their best, but they do deserve to be available to let the fans decide if they want to view them or not.

Regarding the remastering - I find the whole 5.1 remastering an interesting experiment, and kinda neat the first listen, but in truth the majority of the time I listen to music is on headphones or in the car, so the 5.1 mixes will collect dust. This also adds to the frustration that the bonus material is only accessible on a DVD player. That's a crummy choice.
The sound quality on these new remasters is good, however I cannot hear too much difference from the previous CD's. One disappointment is the first note of `Satellite' has been lopped off, giving the listener a bit of confusion and throws the song off a bit. Other than that, it's just fine.

"A Broken Frame" takes repeated listens and an open mind to truly appreciate it for the classic that it is. Though Depeche Mode released some great music throughout the 80's, (I tuned out after the over exposure of "Violator"... until "Playing the Angel"), They never surpassed the experimentation and creativity of this album.

This is an extraordinary album by a gifted musician. Of Aaberg's fine Windham Hill piano albums, Out of the Frame features many of his strongest and fully realized pieces. Aaberg's splendid compositions balance emotive strength and dignity with a distinctly American humanism and love for the landscape. Spare synthesizer backing and guest string contributions complete the arrangements to several songs, enhancing the depth and meaning in counterpoint. The first time I heard Phillip Aaberg's music was on Windam Hill's Sanctuary CD collection. I was entranced by his song on that album (Every Deep Dream on "Upright") and went out and got this album to see what his other songs were like.

Phillip Aaberg is the sort of pianist that I want to be, one who is comfortable playing jazz, new age, classical, rock, you name it. He is an exceptional talent both performing and composing, and this album is the perfect example of that. His other two "old" albums are great as well, but if I had to choose one, I would choose this one. The background vocals and guitar/ensemble work is wonderful as well, and the tunes vary from the hauntingly beautiful "Before Barbed Wire" and "Call and Response" to the upbeat and slightly funky "Full Court Pickup" and many points inbetween. This album transcends the "New Age" label that makes one think of elevator music or sweet noise, this is ART. Bravo!

A Fine and Private Place.......2003-12-05

One of the many thinks I like about Philip Aaberg is that her is a two-handed pianist. By that I mean that he does much more than play a melody against an innocuous left hand line. He can move from simply melodic presentation to a complex mix of harmonic and rhythmic voices at will. All the while making this sound as easy as the early Czerny exercises. Frankly, I'm jealous.

Out of the Frame, one of my favorite Aaberg albums is marked by an easy diversity of style - quiet contemplative work like 'Nevertheless, Hello' - the structural solidity of 'Walking Through Walls' - and the driving style of 'Swoop,' for example. Aaberg is very much one of New Age's strongest musical talents, very much a peer of George Winston and Michael Jones. It would be very hard to pick a 'best' from that group, but I think Aaberg probably is the master at using control to extract every nuance of color from his instrument.

This album is also notable for the musicians working with Aaberg - Michael Hedges, Barbara Higbie, Darol Anger and Mike Marshall, among others. Without argument, this is world class music in its genre - as thoughtful planned and executed as it is inspired. A key part of this listener's library.

Everything instrumental acoustic should be.......2002-06-16

Of the many Windham Hill CDs I've listened to, this is one I return to again and again. This is music with beauty, emotion, and depth. Aaberg is a gifted pianist and the music is lovely without being trite. The piece "Call and Response" with wordless vocals from Barbara Higbie is one highlight, as is the first cut "Walking Through Walls." If you want acoustic piano and ensemble at its finest, get this CD.

Great Piano Album.......2002-01-12

Philip Aaberg is my favorite pianist. Phil's playing is stunning, very full of emotion. I would contrast his playing to, say, George Winston's by saying that Phil's playing is more intense, tighter, more musically complex. He is classically trained but has played rock, jazz, etc.

This is my favorite record by Phil; but they are all good. This is not simply background music, it can be listened to closely, unlike much of the "New Age" genre. His use of guitar and percussion on the record are excellent. "Before Barbed Wire" gives me shivers: it is so beautiful and full of longing for the unspoiled West.

Subtle piano work from Philip Aaberg.......2000-02-13

A good follow-up to Aaberg's "High Plains" continues where he left off. Excellent music to read or study with. Melodies are not complicated, but they don't have to be. "Nevertheless Hello" and "Walking Through Walls" typify Aaberg's unique style of taking you wherever you want to go to relax.
