Rosenbaum performs Schubert: Moments Musicaux Op. 94

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Victor Rosenbaum gives shatteringly intense performances of two late Schubert masterpieces- the Sonata in A Minor, D. 959, and Moments Musicaux, Op. 94. This recording is from a concert given in Jerusalem, and documents, for the first time on disc, the art of Victor Rosenbaum, a Schubertian of unusual temperament and depth. The transcendently beautiful A major Sonata was written in September of 1828, a year in which Schubert, knowing he was fatally ill, wrote with an almost unimaginable furiosity in an apparent race against time. Moments Musicaux was published that same year, and shows Schubert's mastery in the shorter forms.

Rosenbaum gives heartrending performances of these late Schubert works. It is almost impossible not to be completely drawn into this music through his account.

I am only a recent admirer of Schubert's music and this album was part of my transformation. Rosenbaum plays with his attention keenly focussed on Schubert's unfolding drama as a man approaching his impending death. He makes a case for the greatness of these works. Whenever Maestro Rosenbaum performs, he seeks a compelling and consistent storyline to undergird the music. He generously rewards the listener with a journey through an emotional landscape.

I'll quote a paragraph from the liner notes written by Maestro Rosenbaum:

"The compositions on this disc are 'late' works; and although it is ironic to speak of 'late' works by one who died at the age of 31, a close examination of the music and an attentive listening will confirm that they bear all of the earmarks that this designation suggests: a complete and utter mastery of compositional processes, the deep and affecting psychological and philosophical understanding that one associates with maturity and old age, and the kaleidoscope of emotions -- defiance, nostalgia, joy, resignation -- that precede death."

This disc is a recording of a live performance at the Jerusalem Music Centre on February 19, 1995. The acoustics of the hall are admirable and the recorded sound is beautiful and spacious.

I highly recommend this disc.
