Editorial Reviews
Album Description
This 3-CD set comprises comparative interpretations of Mozart's last three Symphonies — No. 39 in E-flat major, No. 40 in G minor and No. 41 in C major, "Jupiter" — by some of the 20th century's greatest conductors. Erich Kleiber (1927), Felix Weingartner (1928) and Josef Krips (1947) are featured in No. 39; Richard Strauss (1927), Sir Thomas Beecham (1937) and Wilhelm Furtwängler (1949) lead No. 40. Bruno Walter (1928) and Arturo Toscanini (1945) conduct both No. 41 and the Die Zauberflöte Overture. With this unique collection, music lovers have the opportunity to compare highly distinct approaches to these immortal scores. The 96-page booklet includes classic photos of the conductors at work, as well as an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tim Page, an essay by New York Times critic Paul Griffiths ("Mozart in the 20th Century") and detailed artist biographies from The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
