Glorious, glorious, glorious!.......2007-03-05
I usually review books, because I think there are others who can better review classical music, but on re-listening to this divine recording tonight I simply had to comment on the pleasure it has given me over the past several years. I first fell in love with this music as a young man when my first wife used to practice the "Ballade". She never performed it, but I've heard others do so, as well as bits and pieces of Ysaye's other Solo Violin Sonatas. But this is devilishly difficult music, both technically and musically, so I don't think I ever really heard it played as it should be until I got this recording.
What a revelation! Ysaye's Sonatas are some of the most beautiful and moving music written, although I must admit that I think they are perhaps an acquired taste for many. But those who have ears to hear should certainly give this CD a listen. If you do not like this recording by Ilya Kaler, then you simply don't like these pieces, because I think it is safe to say that no one could play them better.
Kaler's technique and intonation are impeccable throughout, and delivered with an assurance that speaks of profound reserves still left untapped. Then there is the glorious tone he pulls from whatever violin this happens to be - the liner doesn't say - resounding just perfectly in the marvelous acoustics of the St. John Chrysostom Church, in Newmarket, Ontario, where it was flawlessly recorded by Naxos with what sounds like state-of-the-art equipment, and with love. The overall sound quality is second to none, just glorious.
Topping off all these great technical feats, finally, is the life Mr. Kaler breathes into this music with his interpretation. He could not render such a profound and deeply moving interpretation without the technique to back it up, but with the technique firmly in hand he then also has the musical insight to draw out sublime and unexpected nuances that surprise and delight and move me anew each time I listen. It stirs me like almost nothing else. I never tire of it. My highest recommendation.
Best 8 dollars you could ever spend.......2004-05-26
With no competition, this is the greatest interpretation and recording of the Ysaye sonatats. Kaler, as usual, displays his technical perfection - giving the utmost attention to the very fine details of violin playing. His passionate execution seeps through your speakers and is trancelike...simply stunning

Ilya Kaler is simply a superb artist. Check out any of his recordings available on Naxos. This one is a particular favorite of mine. Possibly the best versions available of Dvorak's Violin Concerto and the Romance, and at a bargain price to boot.

A little taste of Glazunov.......2002-08-11
This CD, like all NAXOS is a wonderful sampler of the wonderful work of Alexander Glazunov, who is not very popular these days unless you tend to listen to your local classical music station. I have to admit I wish NAXOS had chosen more pieces of Glazunov from his Ballet Scenes, as it seemed they excluded some of the best "scenes," from the CD. Maybe my expectations were higher, but I'd say that is the only flaw on this nearly flawless CD.

THE BEST CAPRICES EVER............... !.......2004-07-06
With this recording you don't ever need to listen to ANY other recordings of the Paganini Caprices, Unless Paganini himself. I have many recordings, including with some "legends" of the violin, but, Most of them are really OFF-KEY, but very near, that's irritating! On this recording if you even posess Perfect Pitch like Me, you won't listen to any note off-key. Perfection is here. And very Passionate also!
10 stars for this recording!
Ilya Kaler: Paganini Caprices.......2004-04-24
Mr. Kaler plays Paganini like it should be played. Virtuosity, passion, showmanship, rich sound and a special touch of his own. This one of my favorite recordings of the Caprices.
Hardly Stellar...........2000-07-22
Kaler's rendition of the Paganini Caprices is adequate at best. At times he sounds like a capable virtuoso; yet, he fails to deliver consistent performances. At his worst, he turns this music into directionless etudes, which in turn sounds very tiresome. I find it very difficult to actually listen straight through this recording without my mind wandering off somewhere. Aside from his lackluster interpretations, I also find Kaler's mediocre techniques irritating. Granted, the fact that he has recorded all 24 Caprices already makes him technically superior to many of his peers. Yet, compared to the greatest virtuosos who have recorded this music, Kaler lacks the needed polish to make this music come alive. For example, at the beginning of Caprice 14, I expected to hear smooth, silky double stops. Instead, Kaler's violin sounds rather raspy, as if he is forcing notes out of it. Also, Kaler does not play terribly in tune in the faster passages nor the high notes. Granted, we are talking about the Paganini Caprices here, and even the greatest players make mistakes. But, considering that this is a highly competitive field, Kaler really should strive for the top, not mere mediocrity. Therefore, I cannot warmly recommend this CD, despite the high praises from Penguin Guide and Gramophone. For a truly amazing recording of Paganini Caprice, try the Midori CD on Sony Classical. Other than its full price, the Midori CD is in every aspect superior to this Naxos CD.
Superb Passion.......2000-02-28
Absolutely awesome. Many violinists have the technique and mechanical aptitude to play Paganini but only Kaler has breathed true passion and vibrant feeling into the performance. His playing sweeps the listener into a tangable three dimentional musical landscape. One can almost see the persperation on his brow and watch it fall from his hair as he pours himself into his art. Magnificent in all respects and highly recomended with no hesitation whatsoever.
OUTSTANDING!!!.......1999-10-11
I own 10 different recordings of Paganini's 24 Caprices, and this one is the best. Kaler's tone and technique remains unsurpassed. Although Perlman's and Mintz's rank among the best, I would say that Kaler's tone puts him a step above. His technique is flawless and he doesn't sacrifice speed, explosiveness, and driving force like some of the other recordings do . . . like the famous Ricci recordings in particular. To anyone buying this for the first time, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this recording over the others. This violinist is superb and tosses off these caprices like butter. His crystal clear technique, bright tone, explosive performance, and brilliant interpretation make this recording number one.

sweet tone, bad recording.......2000-02-26
NAXOS is good to discover new/younge artists, but it should also apply good techniques in the recording. If Ilya is playing in front of us, we will be easily moved, but the bad recording simply destroyed his performance
Excellent songs- bad player.......1999-09-04
Two phrases- Paganini good, Ilya Kaler very, very bad. Worst violinist ever.
Great "tunes".......1999-08-21
I agree with the above review. This is incredibly good music. The sonatas with violin and guitar are beautiful, and the caprices are certainly astounding. Everyone knows Paganini was an unmatched violinist, but he was also a great composer. This disc is a steal.
great music.......1999-03-19
This is some of the sweetest music of all times. Fortunatelly for me, but sadly for the performers it's also very cheap.

Superb.......2005-12-19
I came across this recording by accident, convinced that Salvatore Accardo was the authority on Paganini. Hearing Kaler's recording was stunning. He truly captures the playfulness and lightness that Paganini intended, while maintaining a supersaturated, gorgeous tone. This is my top recommendation for Paganini.
Great recording, great price.......2001-04-08
This is another great bargain release from Naxos. Both of the concertos are played wonderfully by Russian violinist Ilya Kaler whose performance is both excitingly virtuosic and musically beautiful. He is well backed by Gunzenhauser and the PNRSO, who beautifully shape the expositions to the opening movements and provide effective accompaniment throughout. The recording fully captures the delightul tone produced by both the soloist and orchestra. At only six dollars for sixty-five minutes of music, with a three star rating in the Penguin Guide (signifies an outstanding performance and recording in every way) and recommendation in the Gramophone guide, this is a no-brainer.

What can i say?.......2006-07-10
Not being a trained musician i feel unqualified to comment on Ilya's playing. It sounds as masterful as is humanly possible, wanting in no aspect of Virtuosity.Ilya's playing is at all times brilliant and thoroughly satisfying to my untrained ears.Clarity, strength, facility with complexity are all in fully mature exhibition throughout this CD.I would not hesitate to recommend its purchase to anyone desiring Virtuoso Solo Violin listening.I can state without reservation it is a highly rewarding experience.
Kaler, solo: II!.......2000-06-23
For those who enjoyed the experience of listening Kaler's recording of Paganini's Caprices, this CD is absolutely a must-buy.
Although a solo violin program is not material for wide audiences, this champion of all major violin competitions was able to put together some of the best modern representatives of this genre, with a rarely matched interpretation. Highly recommended!

It's always a pleasant surprise when a budget label offers us performances as good as these. Ilya Kaler and Maria Kliegel blend in one of the best performances of the Brahms Concerto I've ever heard. They are both "big" enough for the music, which they play on a grand scale. But they also blend well and selflessly into an integrated performance with the strong orchestra and conductor. Brahms, that lover of chamber music, would have been delighted. Kliegel's Schumann Concerto is very romantic, with a lot of phrase bending, but she keeps within the bounds of good taste and again the orchestra provides strong collaboration. --Leslie Gerber

Very Enjoyable Concerti by Brahms & Schumann.......2007-04-24
What a nice coupling! Instead of putting Brahm's Double with Beethoven's Triple Concerto, like so many others, Naxos has nicely put together Schumann's beautiful Cello Concerto with the Brahms Op.102. Of course, most know of Johannes Brahm's fondness for the pianist, composer, and wife of Robert Schumann, that is, Clara Wieck (Schumann). First, the Schumann Concerto, which Robert referred to as a "Concert piece for cello with orchestral accompaniment", which was composed in 1850. It's first public performance was not given until 1860, four years after Schumann had passed. The soloist here in this recording is Maria Kliegel. She is well-balanced, with very good sound provided by the Naxos engineers. She receives fine support from the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, conducted by Andrew Constantine. A perfect balance is achieved by the soloist and the orchestra, with excellent results. The Brahms Double Concerto was written about two years after his Fourth (and final) Symphony, in the year 1887. This is a very appealing performance recorded on this release. Once again, the cello soloist is Kliegel, with the violin played by Ilya Kaler. Both are well 'in-sync', with very good intonation. The difficult double-stopped chords played together by both players in the finale are exceptional and very clearly captured in this warm, full-bodied recording. The beautiful main melody in the Andante comes off wonderfully. Then, the finale is performed unhurriedly, but with wit and charm. At this great Naxos price, both of these works on this CD are highly recommended, competitive with most full-price versions available.

At budget price, this is a highly recommendable coupling of Shostakovich's two violin concertos. As with the cello concertos, the First is far more popular than the Second, which is a pity because the Second Concerto is very different from the First, and no less worthy. Shostakovich wrote both of these works for David Oistrakh, and the brooding First Concerto was one of his "desk drawer" pieces. He put it aside until after Stalin's death when the subsequent cultural thaw made performance possible. The Second is a lighter, more carefree work, with a freer lyrical impulse. Kaler plays them both with enthusiasm and, where called for, probing interpretive insight. --David Hurwitz

Exemplary, insightful performances.......2004-02-12
Ilya Kaler's performances of these two wildly different but equally beautiful and dark concertos are just about flawless. While he is capable of imbuing his tone with a rich sonority, he is not afraid to sound slightly astringent when the occasion calls for it. His reading of the second concerto's powerful cadenza is a case in point: brilliantly phrased, ferociously executed and played with compelling conviction, it is a thrilling demonstration of Kaler's formidable skill. The first movement of the first concerto is also especially memorable, particularly because of the sensitivity and fervour with which Kaler controls the music's nocturnal tension. As a matter of fact, he plays both concertos with seemingly remarkable ease, though this is not to suggest that he scamps them. Far from it: his playing is unremittingly virtuosic and, at times, even poignant. When Shostakovich asks for briskness in a seemingly Mahlerian folk melody, Kayer delivers with infectious energy. Similarly, when anguished reflection is required, he plays with a focused sense of direction and despair. As far as I am concerned, his playing is almost second to none. Oistrakh is perhaps the only real contender, and he should be too, seeing as Shostakovich originally dedicated the second of these concertos to him. Furthermore, Naxos's sound recording is immaculate, though some might take issue with the fact that the violin is slightly too close-miked, a problem which many recordings of violin concertos have.
The only qualm I have is with the orchestra's occasionally perfunctory support. Though Antoni Wit is undoubtedly a great conductor, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra is merely competent, lacking the technical flair and impact of world-class ensembles. Their playing is less convincing than it should be in some places- it could be more frenetic in some places and more full-blooded in others- but these shortcomings do not detract from these performances in any serious way. At the end of the day, this is a first-class Naxos release which receives my unreserved recommendation.
The best version.......2001-12-29
Shostakovich is one of my favorite composers. I bought several CD versions of Shostakovich violin concerto No.1, such as those played by David Oistrakh, Vengerov, Sitkovetsky, and Ilya Kaler, as the solo violinist. Among those versions, my personal preference is Ilya Kaler's performance. To me, his interpretation is unique and more profound and touching than others. First of all, his playing has a superior quality of golden tone: bright, pure, smooth, and sharp. This golden tone quality fits this concerto wonderfully. Secondly, he let music speak by itself with his tempo and phrasing perfectly judged, which reveal his deep understanding of this music. I do not feel so convinced by other interpretations, which are often faster and thus lose some profound effect. This is most obvious in the third movement. Antoni Wit and PNSO did a great job in the performance. The sound is excellent and tempo is perfectly judged, giving Keler the best support. To me, this is the best performance of Shostakovich violin concerto No.1.
Hidden Jewel.......2001-08-06
I have heard other recordings by Ilya Kaler. He is a hidden jewel and his violin playing is spectacular!! Just listen to his performance of the third movement(passacagia)of the Concerto No. 1 Op. 99 and you will be able to see. He plays with real passion and beauty. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest violinist alive and does not receive the credit that he deserves!! If you enjoyed this recording, I recommend Kaler's recording of the Paganini Caprices that is also on the Naxos label.
Just as a side note... I may be wrong but I believe that Kaler is the only violinist to ever win gold medal in all three violin competitions; the Paganini, Sibelius, and Tchaikovsky competion.
Very Lively.......2001-07-04
As most of Shostakovich's pieces are, his violin Concertos are very lively. With tons of double stops, octaves, and other things that sound moderately odd from a violin, The first Violin Concerto seems to change between soft and loud; slow and fast. The second has less of that, but spends more time in the slow tempos. Ilya Kaler does a grand job, even though he is not as good as Isaac Stern or Itzhak Perlman. He plays everything almost perfectly, in fact, i have not yet found a mistake in his playing. Dont mind that it is played by the "Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, it sounds just great. Antoni Wit conducts it fine, though i have no other pieces played by any of the people that conduct or play on this CD. If you like these pieces, you should greatly consider looking into one of Shostakovich's Piano Concertos. Particularily his second one, which is in Fantasia 2000 and used to represent the Steadfast Tin soldair.
