Music Of The Modes
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
You don't have to be a scholar or an early music fanatic to enjoy music like this. Just close your eyes and let the warm voices, flowing lines, and gentle harmonies wash over you. Yes, this is sacred music, intended for worship, but its sensuousness can't be denied. While not as stylish or masterful in linear development as the later music of Byrd, Tallis, Palestrina, or Victoria, it projects an assured sense of melodic motion and harmonic destiny. Although 1997 was the 500th anniversary of the death of Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem, much of his music remains in obscurity--and what there is has often been criticized for its "lack of formal consistency." If this is a bad thing, only a musicologist will care. In the hands of the very fine Capella Alamire, who sing with seamless phrasing and near-perfect ensemble blend and balance, what the rest of us hear are richly colored, deeply felt expressions of great beauty that elevate the revered texts of the Mass to heavenly heights. --David Vernier

Thanks to good marketing, good cover art, and good luck, this disc probably has sold more copies than most other recordings of Gregorian chant put together. It's often quipped that most of those discs have been listened to exactly once and put away--to the puzzlement of many musicians and critics, who point out that there are more beautiful, more varied performances by professional singers available. Yet the singing of these Spanish Benedictines has a special quality that probably explains this disc's popularity--a reverent serenity that no doubt stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing. Granted, Chant can become a bit monotonous with repeated listening, but it really gives you the sense of devotion that has always been the purpose of "Gregorian" chant. If this recording (ahem) enchants you at first, wonderful. If you get bored with it later, don't give up--there has been an extraordinary variety of styles and sounds over the 1,500-year history of plainchant, so go exploring with Anonymous 4, Ensemble Gilles Binchois, Sequentia, or Ensemble Organum. You won't be sorry. --Matthew Westphal

Chant.......2007-06-25
The CD was received on time and in excellent condition. I use the CD in the evenings to slow me down and get me in a relaxed mood.
Chant.......2007-03-09
It is a true to life portrail of the medieval prayer form.
Some things are ageless.
PEACE FROM WITHIN.......2007-01-09
I can't understand most of the latin words in these chants but the spirituality, harmony and the "music" in the monks' voices are refreshing to the soul. I know that several monks sing but you basically hear one voice. I would suggest that a pocket size book with the translation of each chant should accompany each CD.
Gregorian Chant.......2006-08-13
I purchased this item because one of my children has been going through the Tomatis method of auditory integration training to correct some auditory processing issues that affect his ability to communicate. The Gregorian Chant was recommended as a follow up because of its many and pure sound frequencies. After listening to different samples of the Chant, I picked the one sung by the Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos for its sound clarity. Also, it has been interesting to see the reaction of all my children. Two of them weep when they listen to the chant and the other one seems be soothed by it. As an adult, it is this soothing effect from the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos that I find most fascinating.
RELAXING.......2006-03-24
EXCELLENT FOR RELAXING, MEDITATION, OR INTROSPECTION. WHEN I HAVE HAD A BAD DAY, I POP THIS IN ON MY WAY HOME FOR RELAXATION.

This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert Levine

Superb relaxation.......2007-04-01
This is a wonderful compilation. I greatly enjoy listening to it when I'm working on painting or another activity where lower blood pressure is a must. Having two albums in one makes the deal even sweeter. If you alreaddy own Chant I and II, then there's no real value added, but with mine lost in a move, it was a great return of music I enjoy.
What a recording.......2006-12-01
Mystic, eternal, and meditative is how I would
describe these chants, a most perfect gift
for Christmas. This reissue sounds even better
than the ones released in the mid 90's.
I would highly recommend this recording to anyone.
The only rule is sit down, or lay back and enjoy.
FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25
BUYERS BE WARNED - this set should not purchased in lieu of the two original Chant CDs but rather as a supplement to them. Because although both the Amazon.com editorial review and one of the two reviews available for the Anniversary Edition both indicate it is nothing more than a remastered version of the original two Chant releases from 1994, a thorough check of the track listings at Amazon.com (and at angelrecords.com) demonstrates that this is not the case. The sequence of tracks is completely different and there are numerous tracks that appear on one of the original Chant CDs but not on the Anniversary Edition and vice versa. The most complete is the first of the two original discs as all but two of its nineteen tracks appear on the Anniversary Edition. Chant II has less than half a dozen of its tracks appearing on the Anniversary Edition.
However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.
Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.
My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.
Thanks for reading.
Please ignore the other review on this product!.......2005-07-21
The other reviewer obviously does not realize that this is a re-release of both Chant I and Chant II. They have also been remastered. I highly recommend purchasing this 2-CD set because the quality is better than the originals, and the price is usually better than buying the first two separately. I wouldn't be without this in my music collection. Please do no let the ignorance of others keep you from experiencing this beautiful, ethereal music.

Well, here is a ten!.......2005-03-02
I heard Blood Sutra first, and ended up loving it. So I thought I'd go back and check out this one, Panoptic Modes, and it quickly became a favorite, and cemented my respect for Vijay and Rudresh. This is art that I had not expected. At one point, during the very first listen, I screamed in my car, not really believing that they were actually doing this. It was very moving, and continues to be. For me, I sense an honesty and love that really kicks things up a notch.
I guess that there is a chance that this sort of sound just isn't your thing, sure. I've got plenty of friends that I know would not really connect. But damn, for a jazz lover with an open ear, this is stuff that must be heard. I'm very much looking forward to following these fine artists.
Extravagantly gifted pianist.......2003-02-28
New Yorker Magazine: 1 of 2001's best jazz albums. Iyer is an extravagantly gifted new-jazz pianist and a quick-witted composer, but his greatest strength is his skill as a bandleader. On this captivating quartet recording, he establishes a lock-tight rapport with his energetic rhythm section and a cognitive interaction with the alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahantappa, another talent to keep a steady eye on.
Excellent.......2002-07-30
I took a chance by buying this CD based on a bunch of reviews here and there on the Internet. This is the most unique and refreshing Jazz album I have heard in a long time. I'm hoping that I can catch this band live...cause every person in this quartet plays with precision and emotion...
Strong brew.......2002-03-08
More evidence, if any were needed, that the dark, tenebrous piano playing of Powell, Monk, Waldron & Andrew Hill is still with us; this album is in many ways comparable to Jason Moran's work on Blue Note. Iyer isn't the technician that Moran is, nor has he got the interest in more fleet players like Jaki Byard, but he has a very clear idea of what he's doing. His band here is very good, with the excellent alto player, Rudresh Mahanthappa, splitting the difference between modern players like Osby & Steve Coleman, & the high drama of great 1960s voices like Coltrane & Sam Rivers. With the drummer often recalling Elvin Jones with his barrages of triplets, & Iyer drawing on Tyner's thunderous chording, this album indeed does borrow importantly from Coltrane's legacy--inevitable I suppose given that Iyer draws extensively on Indian music here, a major influence on Coltrane. I hear you groan--"yet _another_ album indebted to Coltrane!"--& yet this comes off as highly original & independent of vision. The album is somewhat too unrelieved in impact--there are some delicate moments, but basically it's full-tilt from the opening (the first track, "Invocation", doubles in volume after the relatively contained intro, & had me diving for the volume knob); & yet I find it an enormously promising disc which suggests Iyer's got the potential to be a very special player. Do try: don't expect a comfortable hour of music, but _do_ expect something that engages the ears & mind.

The Jazz French Horn - it Does Exist!!!.......2007-02-25
This CD should be mandatory listening for anyone who wants to learn to play French Horn. If it can be done, you can do it too. And Julius Watkins did it - playing jazz! What a swinging, inventive, beautifully-toned soloist. "Dancing on the Ceiling" will tell you all you need to know.
As an added caveat, the arranging on this CD is fascinating - shout choruses, send-offs, interludes, intros and ending are woven in beautifully to the tunes, with Watkins and Tenorman Charlie Rouse playing off each other like dolphins in the seas. First-class music.
Warm and exotic blast from the past.......2005-10-26
As a kid, I somehow wound up with a number of LP's from the tiny Dawn label. The sounds were of such a high quality that 35 years later they were still receiving spins on my turntable. To discover these recordings reissued on CD and to have them back in hand is a satisfying slap on the face of time.
Les Jazz Modes complemented the unusual sound of a tenor sax/French horn frontline with instruments such as harp and wordless human voice. The free and open feeling of the song forms belied their 12 and 32-bar structures, thanks in part to fugal textures and colorful orchestrations. Yet, as the presence of musicians like Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor and Chano Pozo should testify, these were musicians who could swing and reflect the tradition.
About horn player Julius Watkins, I'm reminded of Dr. Johnson's comparison of a woman preacher to a dog walking on its hind legs: "It is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all." As sexist as the comment is, I'm afraid it has some application to Julius Watkins' playing. He's a fine musician, but his contribution owes as much to the unique tonal characteristics of his instrument as to his melodic ideas and execution. The French horn still sounds rather cumbersome when it attempts to play anything close to bebop. It's Charlie Rouse, a truly underrated and formidable tenor saxophonist, who takes up the slack and then some. A player practically unmatched for ceaselessly inventive, swinging and soulful melodic lines and for lightning fast articulations, he's at once the spark and life of the entire enterprise.
You don't have to be a francophile to relate to this music, though being a Frenchman may not hurt. This is mainstream American jazz, a music that has frequently found a more receptive audience on Napoleon's soil than our own. (Start with the second disc, which is easily the superior of the two.)

The Good Stuff.......2007-04-04
If you are into Indian and/or middle-eastern music woven with modern dub/electronica, then this one is for you.
I found myself hearing the songs over and over, not just in my head, but resonating in my being! The songs repeat certain themes throughout to provide a haunting continuity. Certain melodies and vocal parts just tend to stay with me. It is very addictive.
It is highly recommended that you listen to this on a really good system, preferably one with a sub-woofer.
Deep reverberating cellos, tablas, doumbeks, ambient vocals.
Whether its trance, or dance this release is definitely worth checking out!

Product Description
The pianist Olga Solovieva writes about the piano music of Boris Tchaikovsky. “If I were to formulate what is most important to me in this music, I would say: sincere, straightforward, and simplicity in expressing ideas, feelings and states of mind that are far from being simple, unambiguous or superficial. A remarkable feature of his works is their saying just what is needed to be said, without any regard for the conventions of music.” Once Boris Tchaikovsky was asked about his favorite composer. Having a chance to avoid the question, he nevertheless answered: “If I had to choose, I would choose Mussorgsky.” Olga Solovieva graduated from the Russian Academy of Music named after Gnessins (Moscow) in 1998 and took a post-graduate course in the same Academy as an assistant to Professor Leonid Blok in 1998-2000. At the XII International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2002, she won a special prize and was awarded a special diploma “The Best Accompanist” (accompaniment to cello). Currently she teaches at the Gnessins Musical College and works at the Moscow Conservatory.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent performance.......2005-09-01
Noble, accurate and sensitive performance of outstanding music. Second Piano Sonata is a real masterpiece. One should know better other Boris Tchaikovsky works to understand the real uniqueness of his stile. Put your attention on small pieces for children! You could find a lot of hidden treasures there both in terms of music and playing. Olga Solovieva deserve real appreciation for hard-hitting simplicity of her performance.
Boris, Not Pyotr Ilyitch.......2005-06-11
Boris Tchaikovsky (1925-1996) was no relation to his illustrious fellow-composer, P. I. Tchaikovsky. But he was a talented composer nonetheless. He trained at the Moscow Conservatory during the worst of the Stalin years, studying under Shostakovich, Shebalin and Myaskovsky. He wrote relatively little piano music as an adult, although he first published some piano pieces at the age of 13. The First Piano Sonata, presented here, was written while still at the conservatory in 1944, at the height of the War. The most obvious influence on the sonata's style is that of Shostakovich. There is humor, caustic at times but generally fairly boisterous and naïve, and inexhaustible invention. The first movement is a dramatic sonata-allegro and it is followed by a slow middle movement that is rather like one of Shostakovich's passacaglia movements, although the dramatic tension is nowhere near as wrenching. Indeed, this movement is most notable, in its ten variations, for emotional arch it outlines and the limpid polyphony. The finale is an onrushing allegro molto which slams straight into a coda that recapitulates some of the opening movements elements. For a student work, this sonata is astonishingly assured.
The Second Piano Sonata, written in 1952, was never played during Tchaikovsky's life partly because the composer remained dissatisfied with some parts of it. It was first played a year after his death. Throughout there is emphasis on the lyrical line, but rhythmically it is more complex than its predecessor and indeed there are some jazzy effects, especially in the outer movements. Much of the writing is in two- or three-voices, again reminding us of Shostakovich's piano style. There are more obviously 'public' utterances in this sonata and one has the sense at times that Tchaikovsky is making some sort of 'statement' although its import is not clear.
The Sonatina (1946) is a one-movement work that reminds one rather of the first sonata's first movement. It has both inventive two-part polyphony and faux-naïve harmonies, complete with Alberti basses, at times that make one wonder if the composer was cocking a snook at the edicts about 'composition for the people' that were rife at that period of Soviet music. One hears a definite tongue-in-cheek quality. Whatever the case, it is clearly and yet cunningly concocted.
The remaining works on this disc -- 'Eight Pieces for Children,' 'Pentatonica' (subtitled 'Six Light Piano Pieces') and 'Natural Modes,' the three sets comprising 20 miniatures, most of them very brief -- are of a lesser order. Presumably they are meant rather as Bartók's miniatures were, for pedagogic purposes. Interestingly, 'Pentatonica' was written for a Korean Children's Music Festival, a fitting use of pentatonic scales and harmonies in their natural habitat. These works are modestly charming but of little import.
Our pianist is a young Russian, Olga Solovieva, a product of the Gnessin Academy in Moscow where she now teaches. Her playing is limpid and musical. This CD apparently is the second in a series on the Albany label devoted to the music of Boris Tchaikovsky, the earlier issue containing a piano trio, cello concerto and suite for solo cello; I have not heard that release.

It doesn't get much more authentic than this! These eight CDs present music by William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, Henry Purcell, John Blow, Matthew Locke, the little-known Pelham Humfrey, John Sheppard, and John Taverner--all recorded in Dorchester Abbey, Oxford, England, and sung by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford's great all-male choir. Their heritage goes back to Taverner himself. Their sound is both pure and lush, their singing immaculate. This is music in the finest English tradition, beautiful, devotional music for all seasons. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:
Superb!!!.......2007-03-02
Just listen to the samples --- they speak for themselves - This CD is a trip and continues to grow as it goes along ~ This is what's happening now in Jazz. Check it out. Very Cool! --
NEW Jazz.......2005-05-03
I disagree. This is new music at it best, mixing the world's great musics in new and inventive ways. I think the lyricist is a nice touch, using a kind of slam poet/freestyle that is really hot. Also, if you list a dancer in your liner notes you know what's up.
As for Steve's playing, he and Osby are the new players. Everyone else is just copping Bird, Cannonball, and Trane licks.
Ralph Alessi (bad trumpet, BAD), Andy Milne (piano/keyboards), Reggie Washington (bass), Gene Lake (drums), Vijay Iyer (keyboards), Miya Masaoka (koto), Josh Jones (percussion),Ramesh Shotham (Indian percussion), Kokayi (lyricist), Yassir Chadly (vocals, percussion) and Laila (dance).
Too mainstream.......1999-08-31
I used to love Coleman's earlier, more unknown works. Stuff like, "Answering Machine messages" and "Ocean Sounds", the albums he recorded in his garage and sold out of the back of his car. This new album does have that same feel, but Coleman's music is being watered down by it's mass market appeal. Go back to being unheard of. Till then, I'll be listening to Parker.
