Wagner: Meistersinger von Nürnberg WWV96; Götterdämmerung WWV86d

Fritz Reiner is another one of the great conductors who, for reasons associated with the economics of record production, never recorded a complete Wagner opera (or any other, aside from an early Carmen on RCA). And yet, like his colleagues George Szell and Bruno Walter--both expatiates fleeing Hitler's Germany--Reiner made his reputation in the theater, and his experience certainly tells in this legendary disc of Wagner excerpts. The main attraction of these performances lies in the wonderful collection of bits from Die Meistersinger, an excellent chance to hear more than just the obligatory prelude. In fact, as Wagner recordings go, this disc is unique on account of both the repertoire and the quality of the performances. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:
Reiner and CSO at the top of their game.......2006-11-03
Fritz Reiner's tenure with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was the greatest collaboration in the history of symphonic music in the United States. This recording showcases them at the height of their considerable powers. The exemplary playing of the brass section is worthy of special accolades: Kudos to Adolph Herseth (the greatest orchestral trumpeter the world has yet known), Frank Crisafulli, Arnold Jacobs, and the rest. Fritz Reiner has such complete command of the orchestra that he can afford to let it play loudly yet not lose cohesiveness. The performances are richly emotional and evocative, doing full justice to Wagner's orchestral colors. The sound is remarkably lively and clear for a recording that dates from the 1950's. Highly recommended.
