Album Description
Writing about Yehudi Wyner in the liner notes of this CD, Martin Brody asks, "what other composer is so hospitable to the rudiments of music, and yet is so intensely steeped in the mercurial substance of Modernism, so restlessly stimulated at every musical moment?" Yehudi Wyner’s is an artistic sensibility that is passionately engaged by musical materials that range from popular song to complex polyphony. This recording presents three recent works of Wyner’s that cover a huge expressive range. "The Second Madrigal: Voices of Women" sets texts by or about women. The composer writes that "the work was conceived with the particular voice of Dominique Labelle in mind. Her beautiful sound and expressive eloquence have inspired me to try to provide her with a suitable vehicle." Wyner’s "Quartet for Oboe and String Trio" is in a single movement lasting more than twenty four minutes, with much of the work governed by variation technique. Written for and performed by the! superb oboist Peggy Pearson, Wyner’s oboe quartet presents a dramatic series of episodes that continually change character and mood. Horntrio is more traditional in its basic design–three movements in fast-slow-fast sequence. The harmonic language of Horntrio is heavily influenced by jazz harmonies and the music of the French Impressionists. The composer himself is at the keyboard for this premiere recording.

    Album Description

    The Mirror, a play by Isaac Bashevis Singer, explores the interior life of a Jewish woman living in a small eastern European town. The surrealistic plot mixes themes of sexual repression and fantasy, presided over by a demon who haunts the woman's mirror. Yehudi Wyner, one of America's leading composers, has created evocative music for The Mirror, inspired by various Jewish traditions—from secular folk and religious song to the music of klezmer bands.

            Lazar Weiner (1897-1982) is considered the father and consummate master of the Yiddish art song; in the course of 60 years he composed more than 200. Born in the Ukraine, he became a synagogue choir-boy at age nine and studied piano and theory at Kiev Conservatory, while getting acquainted with both Western and Russian music. He emigrated to New York in 1914, played piano for silent movies and vocal coaches, and conducted community orchestras and secular Jewish choruses. Making friends with Yiddish poets and writers led to his fascination with Jewish music and the discovery of the Yiddish song. This album's 32 songs are representative of his work. Continuing the romantic Lied tradition, he melded text and music and made the pianist an equal collaborator. Indeed, his piano parts' textural variety and predominantly impressionist style are among the songs' most striking characteristics. Another influence was Mussorgsky, whose vocal writing arises directly from the rhythms and inflections of speech. Thus, several of Weiner's most dramatic, narrative songs sound like half-spoken recitatives. Almost all the songs are in minor keys; most are melancholy, mournful, yearning, nostalgic. But there are also two witty "Humoresques," several touching love songs (written for his wife), tender lullabies, and prayers both devout and despairing. The performers, who include Weiner's pianist son and soprano daughter-in-law, are uniformly excellent and totally committed. --Edith Eisler
