Editorial Reviews Anyone fortunate enough to have heard Berenice Bramson in concert will realize immediately that she is at the peak of her vocal and musical artistry. Featuring German, Spanish, Russian, and English songs, all sung with equal linguistic and idiomatic flair, the program includes one written for her by her son Steve when he was a student at Eastman. (He is now a well-known film composer.) Her voice is simply glorious: intensely expressive, flexible, pure, warm, with a dark low register and a thrilling, dazzling top. Her intonation and breath-control are impeccable even in long spun-out phrases. Bramson captures every song's character and mood, from the simplicity and seductiveness of Gerhard's Spanish folksong arrangements and Wolf's delicate intimacy and mischievous charm to Rachmaninov's Slavic melancholy and Strauss' tenderness and soaring ecstasy. Tragically, Berenice Bramson died in 1995, so instead of an exciting discovery of a major artist, this record is a tribute and a memorial. Perhaps it will help, though belatedly, to bring her the recognition she so richly deserves. --Edith Eisler

It is a sad commentary on the music business that a singer with stellar qualities failed to have a stellar career. Born in 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska, Berenice Bramson came to New York to continue her early piano studies. Her vocal gifts were soon discovered by the Russian cantor Boris Voronovsky. Under his and other masters' guidance she acquired a large repertoire of operatic parts and Russian, German, and French songs. Her 1953 New York debut met with critical acclaim. A devoted teacher, she established her own school in Westchester and conducted master classes in prestigious colleges and conservatories. This record--her only one--was compiled by her husband, clarinetist Alan Bramson, from re-mastered tapes of performances in 1984, 1985, and 1986.
Peter G. Davis, New York Times, 1973
