This is apparently the only complete recording of the Scherzi musicali in print. How odd: these straightforward settings of Italian verse, scored for two sopranos and bass, are among Monteverdi's most accessible works: each stanza of a poem is set to the same music, with a ritornello (repeated instrumental interlude, in this case for two violins and continuo) separating the verses. Performers can avoid the potential repetitiveness by doing some verses as solos and adding embellishments to each verse. The instrumentalists do this quite nicely (the harpsichordist throws in a little flourish at the end of every piece); the singers don't do it enough. In addition, Vartolo takes most of these pieces at the same moderate tempo: it all begins to blur into Monteverdi-in-the-Morning. That said, the period instrumentalists and singers have a light, nimble sound ideal for this music, and four or five of the pieces do get very lively, dance-like performances (with added tambourine or drum); those are a real treat--and worth the very reasonable price of this disc. --Matthew Westphal

Lives up to the reviews.......2006-03-11
This recording has gotten extremely positive reviews, and I feel
that it more than lives up to them. The Concerto Italiano plays with extreme sensitivity, and with unparalleled sweetness. Everything about their handling of accents and phrases really *is* unlike others'. They tend to linger in the moment, especially the violins, and announce the beauty of moment after moment. This is definitely not for everyone, understandably, and if you are in a musical hurry, this is decidedly not the recording for you. But if you would rather sip a glass of wine than gulp a beer, I think this might just be the merlot you've been looking for.

I fell in love with Monteverdi's -Scherzi Musicali- after finding a sprightly favourite record of this work with the Boston Camerata.
Bought this one in hopes of replacing that aging vinyl. It is no match for it. The tempo here is too often sluggish. Some more instrumental colours would be nice here, too: pieces like -I bei legami- beg for recorders or flutes added to the mix. Instead, all of the ritornelli are played on violins, and towards the middle of the programme it begins to drag.
This is essentially simple early Baroque music, written for amateur musicians to have fun with. There doesn't seem to be much life here, unfortunately.
A much needed release - but who forgot the texts?.......1998-12-14
Monteverdi lovers will be delighted to see this disc appear, and sure enough Vartolo and his three soloists deliver good performances of the complete set of 18 scherzi, published 1607 - the same year as Orfeo.
Naxos deserves thanks for releasing this repertoire but somebody seems to have blundered; the brief introductory note (by Vartolo?) ends "...will be apparent from the texts, given later in this booklet." But no sign of texts whatsoever. Same is true of the Canzonette volume 8.553316 released at the same time.
If you want to see Naxos at their best consider instead the selected Lamenti (3 volumes to date) which Vartolo has been recording since February 1995. These contain full texts, English translations and rarely heard music by Monteverdi's contemporaries.

Extremely fine singing, well-recorded........2006-12-01
In the first track you know you are in for a treat with this disc.
Kiehr's soprano voice is just right for this repertoire: Appropriately
light yet full of color, with exquisite control and just the right
amount of vibrato (i.e. not too much, but enough to feel relaxed).
You will smile when listening to this disc.
Bass-baritone MacLeod is an ample match to Kiehr, and indeed the blend
between the two singers is ideal. The instrumental accompaniment is
sprightly and clean, but so well recorded that one does not sense any
unpleasant edge to the sound. Special mention must be made of the very
fine lute playing here, and it's luscious blend with Kiehr's enchanting
voice.
This is not earth-shaking music. It's just fun, beautiful, and extremely
well-performed and well-recorded. Heartily recommended.
