Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

4 out of 5 stars Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

5 out of 5 stars Better Every Time.......2007-05-09

This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07

I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

Pop has a good time eating itself on this collection of Doctor Demento favorites. The tunes on this stylistically varied double CD send up a plethora of pop culture phenomena. The perpetrators come from every imaginable entertainment background. Pro wrestlers, folk singers, comedians, actors, garage bands--you never know who's liable to produce a novelty song. Here it doesn't matter if a respected composer or a one-hit wonder recorded the ditty; all sorts of tracks jostle each other on this funny collection. The material covers quite a time span, ranging from Spike Jones's "Der Fuehrer's Face," released in 1942, to "Wappin'," an unreleased track by Darrell Hammond and Christopher Snell which was a hit on Demento's radio show at the tail end of the 1980s. The 20th Anniversary Collection is quite an assortment of the corny, goofy, wacky, and wild. --Fred Cisterna

4 out of 5 stars Why Does Music Have To Be So Seroius?.......2007-06-27

This album is just plain fun. It's great to have a nice collection of novelty songs to sprinkle in during a party or when making compilation discs for long drives or just and evening of fun with some friends.

Dr. Demento's collection surely won't be one of those precious "desert island" albums, those must have albums one would never be caught without, but in the context of a complete collection, it's good to have a few laughs here and there.

You'd really have to be a baby-boomer to appreciate the full context of this album as many are from the before the 1970's, still have some fun, why not?

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2007-06-27

My son suggested this as a birthday gift to his older sister, from him to her - I think I've listened to it more than either of them.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-05-19

I've been looking for some of these songs for a loooong time. Not only do I get to relive my adolescence, but I'm able to introduce my daughter (who shares my sense of humor) to some of my old favorites (G rated, of course)

5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" For Dr. Demento Lovers.......2007-04-20

Unbeknownst to my conservative mother, my brother and I (born in the late 60's) listened to a wonderful radio program called "Dr. Demento" growing up. I told my mother about that recently, and her remark was that if she had known it was on the radio, she wouldn't have let us listen to it! LOL Anyhow, this collection has the vast majority of MY old favorites, such as the otherwise unavailable "Existential Blues", and many others unfamiliar to me to enjoy. It comes in two CD's of 18 songs each. I have happily imported it into my iPod and can't wait to hear everything!

5 out of 5 stars The funniest CDs ever!.......2007-03-08

I used to have this CD collection back in college, and something recently reminded me of a song and I knew exactly where to buy it. I am very pleased with this collection of songs.

Could any single disc live up to the title The Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need? Of course not, though this 76-minute disc gives it a good try. Out of the RCA vaults come original cast performances such as Zero Mostel's "If I Were a Rich Man," Carol Channing's "Hello Dolly," and Oliver's "Consider Yourself." From topnotch revivals come Patti LuPone's "Anything Goes," Peter Gallagher's "Luck Be a Lady," Alan Cumming's "Money," and Bebe Neuwirth's "All That Jazz." Also included are selections from newer shows Titanic and Ragtime. The collection starts to get thin when it has to hunt for available versions of classic songs, ending up with an "America" from Jerome Robbins' Broadway, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from the 1979 Oklahoma! revival, and an "Impossible Dream" from Colm Wilkinson's solo album--all fine recordings, but nothing that could be considered a first choice. And of course there are many omissions, most notably the shows of Stephen Sondheim (a longtime RCA artist, even!). A follow-up, The Only Other Broadway CD You'll Ever Need, proved what everyone expected--the original's title was indeed an impossible dream. But it got your attention, didn't it? --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars where is all the music.......2001-11-05

Okay all of those songs are great but I have a question. Where is Andrew LLoyd Webber on this CD? Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, Evita and CATS? How can you manage to make a CD of Broadway with out Andrew Lloyd Webber? They need to re-do this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific, except for...........2000-01-08

The CD only had one problem. Where's Annie? It's one of the best musicals out there with some of the best songs. Where's TOMORROW or HARD KNOCK LIFE? Other than that, it's a great CD

This CD may not be the only Broadway CD you'll ever need because it leaves out songs from many high profile and popular musicals, but it does have a wide variety from what RCA Victor produced. It is a nice CD with some sound choices of music ... I enjoy listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars GI Jukebox.......2007-04-11

This is an excellent collection of the nostalgic songs from World War II. I was born in 1935, so was very young when this music was the rage. However, my parents managed a boarding house for young military men stationed at what is now Ellsworth AFB, SD, and their wives. The wives spent the long days playing the piano and singing some of these songs. It is a time in my life that I will cherish always.

4 out of 5 stars G. I. Jukebox.......2007-03-28

Collections dealing with World War II abound; this is a good introductory one. Nothing out of the ordinary here (although Rudy Vallee's "As Time Goes By" is an unexpected treat, along with the Merry Macs' "Mairzy Doats"), but recommended for those who want a general overview.

4 out of 5 stars excellent compilation of popular WWII music........2007-03-18

born in 1961, i, until recently, did not get much enjoyment from the popular music of the forties. as a passionate audiophile geek, i love exploring music of all the decades to which there is recorded sound. though my first flirtations with hits of the 40's did not go over to well, i did not give up. i came back to that decade. it was rhino records wonderful two volume collection "songs that got us through WWII," that really turned me around. i now find myself getting lots of pleasure from the popular music of this era. this collection: "G.I. Jukebox," is a complete winner, just like the double rhino collection i mentioned, it transports one to another time and another american culture. sometimes cheesy (nothing wrong with that), and always pleasing to hear, the songs on this disc are warm relics of a bygone era. i highly recommend this compilation to one and all.

5 out of 5 stars Sentimental and fun songs of a great era ! .......2007-02-19

I bought this CD for a retirement gift for a lady who worked 44 years as a school cook. She loves anything World War II era. Another lady at the party had me order it for her as well. I really liked the selections, and I'm 25 years younger than those ladies!

5 out of 5 stars "dream come true for nostalgic music collectors".......2000-04-07

This probably is one of the most thorough single disc collections of World War II hits ever assembled. Many tracks related - "THERE'LL BE A HOT TIME IN THE TOWN OF BERLIN (WHEN THE YANKS GO MARCHING IN)" with Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters - "COMIN' IN ON A WING AND A PRAYER" performed by The Song Spinners, both tracks have World War II related themes. A few stand outs - "MAIRZY DOATS" an original Merry Macs 1944 hit, not available on many compilations - "CANDY" has Johnny Mercer, Jo Stafford and The Pied Pipers with this 1945 Chart Topper.

Songwriter Johnny Mercer has five of the eighteen tracks from his long career represented on this excellent Hip-O Record compilation, each with the original artists and version. One further note, all selections reached number one on "Billboard Charts" between 1941 and 1945. A dream come true for nostalgic music collectors.

4 out of 5 stars Delightfull.......2006-11-10

This CD contains some of Fred Astaires most well know snogs like Check to Check and Lets Face the Music and Dance all well restored. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is that some of the scores were not from the movies they originally appeared in so they are a little different versions than the one most people would know. But all in all it is a wonderfull light hearted CD well worth the money.

These sixteen performances are a perfect pairing of vocalist and pianist. Both Michael Feinstein and George Shearing work well in such a spare setting and they've wisely chosen to focus exclusively on ballads. These two consummate musicians, a generation apart, are united by the timelessness of the traditions they both draw from. For this project they turned to the songs of an under celebrated American composer, Harry Warren. While many of his songs are well known standards, his name is less recognized than such contemporaries of his as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. This elegant set brings to mind a classic collaboration from three decades earlier by Bill Evans and Tony Bennett. Recorded with warm clarity, the CD moves with subtle momentum, as the passion in the performances ebbs and flows across the luxurious songs. --David Greenberger

3 out of 5 stars Not up to their usual standards - it drags..............2006-11-15

As a huge long time fan of both Shearing and Feinstein and collecting both, I was disappointed in this pairing. Mostly it's Feinstein too soft, too slow and no changes in vocal coloring - everything sounds the same - lacking any energy. If you want a CD totally mellow and perhaps sleep inducing, this is the one for you. I expect more from Feinstein. Shearing is perfect, as always! Frankly, Feinstein has lost out in my collection to Michael Ball who really can sing anything perfectly!

1 out of 5 stars It limps badly.......2006-08-02

Shearing, a pianist of great sophistication, pokes along on this recording to accomodate Feinstein's overall lame - and occasionally expiring - delivery of the lyrics. If this were Shearing and a quartet, without Feinstein, the results would have been Shearing's usual delicious product, I'm sure. Why is a great talent like Shearing yoked to a mediocre lightweight?

5 out of 5 stars Two Reviews; Pick One.......2006-07-21

This is an album of 15 songs written by the late, great Harry Warren (recall the play/review "42nd Street"), sung by the great Michael Feinstein and accompanied by the great George Shearing. Every song is sung as a ballad, and nothing is played or sung louder than mezzo piano.

What to say about it? I see a strong case for a four-star review, and I see a strong case for a five-star review.

Four stars: While there is much to admire in the musicality of these two great musicians, they sound here as though they are competing for the prize of who can pull back the most. Except for slight flourishes on "I Know Why (And So Do You)" and "Shadow Waltz", the normally ebullient Shearing (recall his "New York New York" and "Lullaby of Birdland" with Torme, for example) is barely recognizable. Songs that normally have drama to them, such as "At Last" and "I Only Have Eyes for You", have been stripped of that here. As a result, these pieces almost sound like pieces from a museum. The curators, Feinstein and Shearing, have preserved pieces to be admired; but I personally like living things.

Five stars: Do any of you have any idea how difficult it is to sing a piece softly, without losing tonality, without losing focus, and making your lowest note sound as clear as your uppermost? Can any of you appreciate a singer who can train his voice such as to make his falsetto sound like his chest voice in timbre? Feinstein does that here--15 times. Every note is burnished with beauty. And I do mean every note. When I think of great 5-star albums, such as John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Sinatra's "Sings for Only the Lonely" or last year's "One to Every Heart" by Mark Murphy, I ask: "Why not 5 stars?" Indeed, why ever not? The distinctions between the 4, in terms of beautiful end product (albeit different styles) are insignificant.

My verdict: Given that I have had nothing but this c.d. in my player for the past 7 days, I have to give it 5. I just don't have that happen with 4-star c.d.'s. Besides, this is a perfect album to sing along with in the car, while driving to choir practice. Try to match up with Mr. Feinstein for 15 minutes, and by the time you get to rehearsal, you're good to go. RC

5 out of 5 stars super mellow extravaganza.......2006-03-28

I had tears in my eyes when I first heard this album. I get emotional over music I really like, and this album got to me.So many great standards so well delivered by the duo. They deliberately chose slower ballads for this album so don't look for uptempo, snappy songs in this one.Not that Harry Warren could not write faster stuff like Jeepers Creepers,Shuffling Off to Buffalo etc. This album is to sing along with softly or hum.I kept thinking of Bogart in the rain in Casablanca and other lovers in W.WII.I know the main tune in that movie was not by Harry Warren;it simply reminded me of great love tunes from that era by Julie Styne[Time After Time] and the grossly underrated Harry Warren.Grab someone you love, some good wine and savor one of the great popular composers and a great duo. They should do more Harry Warren albums,Michael and George.I thank them profusely.

2 out of 5 stars Harry Warren Uplifted.......2006-02-22

While I am not a great duo fan, and recommend MF get back to those lushly orchestrated back-ups, these tunes are uplifted as good as I have ever heard them.
My only gripe is that sometimes, MF gets a little too slow for my tastes. He can be like a Shirley Horn of a different gender, so I found this album drags too much. It's like listening to a doctoral dissertation of Buxtehude.
Finally, I am an old Shearing Quintet lover, and boy would that have made this a gem. Shearing has not won me over as a paino player like say Brubeck or Evans, but with the quintet setting he is an icon nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price for sure!.......2007-03-16

I used this to provide background music for a special "Great Depression" exhibit my history students put together for the rest of the school. GREAT selection for representing the 1930s, except for a real important omission: "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime" is not on this CD and it should be. Other than that, the tunes are right on target and Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless American" is wonderful.

A nice collection of 20 period songs that include some familiar selections such as Happy Days are Here Again, Stardust, We're In The Money, Moonlight Serenade and Kate Smith with Orchestra singing God Bless America along with 15 others. These are old recordings and a few do not have great sound quality as versions done later, but, are authentic. Amazon.com's music samples were very helpful.

With her combination of jazzy cool and kittenish charm, it's probably safe to say that Jessica Molaskey has entered the realm of "phone book singers," i.e., those who you'd pay to hear vocalizing anything. As anyone who remembers her "Stars and the Moon" from Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World knows, Molaskey made her name in musical theater, and it's those roots she returns to in Make Believe after her previous solo albums covered the Depression era and '50s jazz. That includes chestnuts like "All That Jazz," which though familiar and obvious, still sound great, and representations from Broadway's new generation: Adam Guettel duets on Rodgers and Hart's "Glad to Be Unhappy," Brown arranges a frenetic combination of the Lambert Hendricks and Ross favorite "Cloudburst" and Stephen Sondheim's "Getting Married Today," and Ricky Ian Gordon cowrote with Molaskey "Cradle and All." As usual, husband-guitarist John Pizzarelli accompanies and vocalizes on a couple tunes, and Sondheim's gorgeous "So Many People" is another highlight. --David Horiuchi

Description

Her debut album, Pentimento, put a jazzy spin on Depression-era standards; the Boston Globe proclaimed, "Slide over, Jane Monheit, and make room on the retro-vocals bench; Jessica Molaskey has arrived!" Her next CD, A Good Day, took off from the song stylings of Peggy Lee; Jazz Times cheered, "She fills each breath with a sensuous charm and a torchy hint of k.d. lang twang." But Jessica Molaskey is a Broadway baby at heart, with scores of shows to her credit. Now, for the first time, she turns her attention to a dozen great theatre standards and, with guitarist-husband John Pizzarelli at her side, infuses them with her own jazzy style and sass. It's 42nd Street meets 52nd Street, as she puts it in her liner notes. You've heard these songs before, but never with the twists devised by Jessica and the Pizzarelli clan..Songs include: I Can't Say No, Guys and Dolls, Make Believe, Step Sister#s Lament, Glad to Be Unhappy, Hey, Look Me Over, So Many People, Cloudburst/ Getting Married Today, Growing Pains, All That Jazz, Right as the Rain, You#re a Builder Upper, Cradle and All, Goodnight My Someone

5 out of 5 stars A sweet delight!!.......2005-09-29

Recently I had the pleasure of listening to this marvelous CD at work. Ms. Molaskey is a recent discovery of mine (though I have been well acquainted with the music of her equally talented spouse, Mr. Pizzarelli) and the song selection, arrangements, etc. are first-rate. A sweet treat to these ears!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2005-08-19

One can tell this is an experienced theatre singer. Her pizazz shows through on every song. Very cool CD. Jessica is as smooth as silk, a performer you just have to hear!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Surprise.......2005-07-28

I was not aware of Jessica, and only found her as result of other Amazon reviews, and what a terrific surprise. Wonderful sound and wonderful standards. I have since purchased 4 more of her CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-04-26

And a terrific singer! I'm so glad to have learned about Jessica Molaskey and am enjoying all three of her CDs. She has a delightful style - a singer who "acts", or vice-versa. It's a quality that made Barbra Streisand so special and extraordinary - well, that and her fabulous voice. Jessica Molaskey can do those things and she can really swing, too and has a sweet jazzy side. Her husband, John Pizzarell and father-in-law Bucky have long been favorites, but Ms Molaskey is a new discovery for our family and we like her! Bucky's other son/John's brother is also a standout musician in the "family business" - what fun family gatherings must be in that family!
This CD, and her others, are great - you find yourself dancing, singing along,or being quiet and listening closely, just really enjoying music. By the way, I think Jessica Molaskey's version of "Goodnight My Someone" is stunning.

The title might be immodest, but it's accurate. Just about every holiday song parody and comedy sketch you can imagine is jimmied onto this hilarious, sprawling collection. While you'll find a smattering of well-known Christmas wackiness (including "Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer" and the Singing Dogs' "Jingle Bells"), the Doctor's specialty is unearthing the obscure, such as Wild Man Fischer's weirder-than-weird "I Am a Christmas Tree." You'll never listen to "The 12 Days of Christmas" quite the same way after hearing the spins put on the tale by both Allan Sherman and Bob and Doug McKenzie, and you're likely to check your Christmas cookie for "special ingredients" after hearing Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and His Old Lady." --David Sprague
