Alfred Cortot
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Few artists can match Alfred Cortot's ability to penetrate the emotional core of the music he played, and to bring listeners along for the ride. That it was a sometimes bumpy ride can be heard in the Ravel, where the wrong note quotient is pretty high. But, like everything on this disc of 1930s recordings, it's still an exciting performance. For despite his cavalier attitude toward note-perfect playing, Cortot was a front-rank virtuoso with immense communicative powers and an absolute identification with the music in his repertory. That helps explain why many of his recordings are so revered. The Franck is near-definitive, with few rivals in Cortot's understanding of the composer's style and the spontaneity of his playing. He makes the neglected Saint-Saëns Concerto sparkle and the Etude is played with vivacity. Mark Obert-Thorn's exemplary transfers make the vintage sound bearable, and Naxos's budget price makes purchase painless. --Dan Davis

Amazon.com essential recording
More than 70 years have passed since the Cortot-Thibaud-Casals trio waxed the Schubert B flat and Beethoven Archduke trios. Both recordings were hailed as classics in the early days of electrical recording and have enjoyed numerous incarnations on LP and CD. Even if you already own these performances, you honestly haven't heard them until you experience these new restorations. The effect is not unlike washing your eyeglasses. All the surface snap, crackle, and swish has been tamed, but more room tone emerges along with long-buried, intermingling overtones from all three instruments. There's more tempo fluctuation than modern ears may be accustomed to, along with Thibaud's slippery portamentos. Yet these devices are channeled toward specific expressive ends. Mannered they may seem, but indulgent, never. And listeners used to Cortot's freewheeling approach to solo repertoire will be surprised at how much he behaves himself in a chamber music context. Write, petition, call, beg, cajole, do anything to induce EMI to bring out the remainder of this trio's recorded output in equally amazing transfers. --Jed Distler

A treasure for all time........2006-10-30
These performances have stood the test of time, without relying on dazzling virtuosity or technique, or reaching for effect. Nothing but affectionate musicianship.
Amusing golden musical treasures!.......2004-08-24
No matter if the sound is not the best . You and me know the meaning of these recordings . The pleasure of enjoying such trio with this giant trio Thibaud , Cortot and Casals makes you soon forget the delightful sound of DDD for instance .
The Archiduke is plenty of soverignity . However I rather prefer the recording of 1960 with Casals (84) , Vegh and Horszowski .
Nevertheless this commented version is much more lyrical than the sixties . Thibaud with his flamboyant and nuance vibrato literally sings all along the work , Casals is the real master and commander in this performing and Cortot knows how enter with his cantabile without forcing or shade the principal voice .
The Schubert trio is anthological . To me it was the best recording till that overwhelming version of Stern , Istomin and Rose . You may well consider both of them as one two winners in all the discography .
This album is really a treasure file .
Casals was the most gifted musician - plenty of commitment and mercurial magnetism - in all the XX century . He was the Midas musician for excellence!
Good music, bad sound quality.......2004-02-26
This is indeed wonderful music and they do it right. The Schubert Trio No 1 is clearly played better than the Archduke. You can feel on piece that they really enjoy playing together.
The only drawback, which I find quite anoying, is the sound quality which is close to terrible. If you listen to it through headphones, the noise becomes overwhelming. It definitely worths as a document, not clear if it worths as a music record.
The joy of pure music making!.......2003-09-29
To me, this is what music making is all about.
The performance of Archduke on this disc is so loyal, so friendly, so charming and so so musical that one feels as though they are sitting down for an intimate exchange with the Old World herself.
Enjoy!
The greatest of all trios.......2003-09-29
When Alfred Cortot, Jaques Thibaud and Pablo Casals formed their trio in 1905, their intention was simply to make music together as three friends, each with a very busy solo career to maintain. They became, for reasons which the present recordings make very clear, THE trio. It was indeed fortunate that, after twenty years of their performing for one month out of each year together, the Gramophone Company persuaded them to commit a small representative selection of their repertoire to the new medium of "electrical" recording, introduced in 1925. It was this new medium which made the recording of chamber music viable for the first time.
The first recording to be made was also the best: the legendary Schubert trio Op. 99. Not only did it have the very real advantage of being recorded in London's Kingsway Hall, but the Cortot-Thibaud-Casals trio over twenty years had obviously made the piece their own. Of all the performances they committed to wax, this was the only one to be recorded without any re-taking. This means that the first "take" of each 4 minute side was the one that was released. This was certainly not true for Beethoven's "Archduke", which required many takes for a number of the sides. Clearly, they found this piece more difficult to penetrate.
The characteristics of this trio which made them great - far greater as chamber musicians than, for example, great virtuosi such as Heifetz, Rubinstein and Feuermann (who also recorded as a trio) - were their exemplary sense of give and take, their expressive range and their miraculous rhythmic flexibility. Just listen to Thibaud's marvellous tone in the slow movement of the Schubert - his use of vibrato ranges all the way from none (the very last note!) to continuous expressive vibrato where it's warranted. Casals plays sthe cello in every style possible, from non-vibrato "continuo" style to the expressive manner befitting the soloist. Both string players are not shy of portamenti, so uncommon in our modern clinical age, but to them (and probably to Schubert and Beethoven) an essential expressive device. Cortot is the glue that binds it all together. The wonderful flexibility displayed by each player also underscores another characteristic of this trio - a real sense of the music's structure and design. Clearly, these players knew each part of these trios, and not only their own.
Just listen to this particular transfer: the Kingsway Hall (Schubert) sounds marvellous and the tone of Cortot's piano (a beautiful instrument, impeccably tuned, by the way) is pure magic. The ear adjusts quickly to the recorded sounds of 1926 and 1928. There are innumerable features which make this recording great and it's futile to attempt to list them there. Much better to invest in a copy instead. If I were attempting to demonstrate great musicianship to a younger student, in ways that cannot be conveyed in words, I'd simply play them this recording of the Schubert. It speaks for itself and it's no accident that it has never been out of circulation since 1926.
The Archduke trio also provides compelling music making, although the sound (not recorded in the Kingsway, unfortunately) is not as good as that of the Schubert of two years before. Actually, for my money, part of the problem is with the work itself - it just doesn't seem to have the same tightness and unity as the Schubert. Cortot is also a little more prone to his famous penchant for hitting wrong notes, but it really doesn't matter: the music's all there.
Cortot, Thibaud and Casals also recorded the Mendelssohn d minor trio, the Schumann d minor and the Haydn trio, the "Gypsy " rondo. Also, a set of variations by Beethoven was included in the same sessions as the Schubert. Nothing is more musically rewarding than to listen to the greatest performers of the twentieth century in this repertoire. The world of Cortot, Thibaud and Casals is one which has now vanished-forever. There is simply no longer playing like this to be heard. No chamber music lover can afford to miss these definitive recordings. And, of all the transfers I've heard (over 40 years), beginning with the original HMV 78's, DB 947-50 (Schubert), this is the best. Strongest recommendation.

Clarifying the previous review.......2007-07-19
Mr. Wilde is spot-on in his comparison of Cortot's 1926 and 1933 recordings of the Preludes (although the most recent reissue of the 1926 recording, on Naxos Historical Series, has noticeably improved the "fuzzy" sound). What Mr. Wilde doesn't really make clear is that this EMI "Great Recordings" contains Cortot's 1933 recording.
Of course, that information should really be provided by Amazon. All too frequently, I don't dare purchase a CD of a historic performance on Amazon, because the "Product Information" omits two essential pieces of information: when the recording was made, and when the CD was remastered.
We need the former information because many artists recorded the same work over and over again, with wildly varying results and in wildly varying sound quality.
We need the latter information because the technology for transferring an analogue recording to CD has improved tremendously since CDs were first issued. My own advice would be to look for a "transfer date" or "re-mastering date" of 1977 or later, that being about the time when the various labels began to use "bit-mapping", "noise-shaping", etc. (Such technology is a major component of what EMI calls "ART Technology", which they use on every historic reissue in this "Great Recordings Of The Century" series.)
In fact, this particular CD is a perfect example: I was looking for Cortot's 1933 recording of the Preludes. Naxos's website told me that their CD had the earlier, 1926 recording. I then turned to Amazon's listings, and saw that the most likely choices were the EMI box-set of (nearly)all of Cortot's Chopin, and this single disc. Amazon gave no information on recording dates for either set, but a helpful customer-submitted review of the box-set states that contains neither the 1926 nor the 1933 recordings, but a still-later one from the '40s! (And, as a general rule, Cortot's technique became more and more fallible as the years progressed.)
As for this single CD...well, of course EMI's "Great Recordings Of The Century" series uses consistently excellent transfers (in other words, the sound is likely to be every bit as good as the original recording allows); but which performance is it? Mr. Wilde's review isn't quite clear on that matter, so I turned to EMI's website, where I eventually learned that this CD has Cortot's 1933 recording of the Preludes.
Amazon could make most of this detective work unnecessary, simply by providing a BACK-cover photo of each CD along with the front-cover photo; it's often on the back cover that recording dates and re-mastering dates are listed. And Amazon could help further by ensuring that when we hit "Enlarge Photo" (to read some detail about the contents), then it's the PHOTO that gets enlarged, rather than just the box in which it appears! But Amazon really does need to start providing the Recording Date (rec.1933, for example)after each title on historic reissues, as well as a "Transfer Date" or "Remastering Date" (Rem.2003).
The Legendary Cortot........2007-01-10
This disc contains some of the best of Cortot's Chopin. The 1933 recording of the Preludes sets a standard for all subsequent recordings, although it has to be said that the 1926 recording [the first ever made] is fresher and cleaner, though unfortunately fuzzily recorded. Cortot's intensely personal sound is much in evidence overall, as is his equally personal 'tempo rubato'. As a teacher, Cortot abhorred what he called 'anonymous' playing, and his own style is instantly recognizable. He had the courage to take gigantic risks, both musically and technically, and it is in this spirit that we should accept a few slips. Today's digital recording techniques create a different psychology in the studio, as I know myself, and the super-accuracy demanded by the technology makes such an approach difficult. On the other hand, editing was not possible in Cortot's day: one recorded 12 inch [4 to 5 minute] discs without a break and with no possibility of correction, and after World War II shortages of discs made more than two takes per disc impracticable.
In the Preludes, note the illusion of two simultaneous tempi in Number 3 in G Major, with a 'rippling spring' in the left hand underlying a serenely langorous melody in the right: the overwhelming passion of the tragic e minor Prelude, the contrasting moods and lyrical intensity of the famous 'Raindrop' Prelude in D Flat, the terrifying drama and pace of the b flat minor - 'The Road to the Abyss' as Cortot himself called it - and the desperate pleading of the f sharp minor.
Somehow Cortot liberates the music even from the shackles of the instrument itself, which becomes a choir or an orchestra, with great tenor and soprano soloists. A large part of his secret is in his wonderfully subtle pedalling. I heard him in the concert hall several times, and he had a way of stretching out his right leg and vibrating his foot on the pedal. He also made extensive use of the 'Una corda' or left pedal, even in loud passages.
Nos 1 and 3 of the Impromptus remain my favourite recordings of all time. In particular, no other pianist could sing the middle sections of both pieces with such glorious freedom, such intensity of sound. Cortot's typical choice of unusually fast tempi serves him well here.
Impromptu No 2 is fine, too, though the middle section is marred somewhat by Cortot's curious laziness about chordal and octave leaps.
I have the impression that he simply disliked the Fantasie-Impromptu, which is well below his best, and that he included it merely to complete the set.
The Barcarolle I find disappointing, so a-typical that I cannot account for it. Cortot was notoriously unreliable and his playing depended, perhaps too much, on his mood. Personally I feel this is the price we have to pay for his best playing, and I'm willing to pay it.
Not for the first time, of the many recordings of Cortot playing Chopin's Berceuse, the one reproduced here is an unsatisfactory version. Made in 1949, it contains a badly voiced 'D Flat'on the instrument he used, so that this note sticks out like a sore thumb, right in the middle of the melody, all the way through the piece. Unaccountably, Phillips also used this version in the vynyl set of Cortot's complete Chopin recordings, despite the fact that there is a beautiful 1933 recording with no such defect, which is also more strongly and authoritatively played. [It is, of course, well known that Cortot had serious health problems after World War II and one must be selective in choosing recordings made after that time.]
Overall the 'pluses' far outweigh the 'minuses' in this recording and I strongly recommend it.

Have you ever wished to be present as a great instrumentalist teaches gifted pupils? Sony's set of Alfred Cortot's Master Classes can satisfy that fantasy, as well as provide insightful performances of works (and excerpts of works) including some Cortot never recorded, and hearing him expound on them from a performer's point of view. It's possible thanks to an engineering student who taped many of Cortot's classes in the late 1950s and Murray Perahia, who tracked down the tapes and produced this invaluable set. Don't understand French? Not to worry--French texts and English translations of Cortot's remarks are provided. We also hear Cortot playing with spontaneity and captivating spur-of-the-moment impetuousness, if also with rather more wrong notes than the fastidious would like. The inevitable frustration of wanting him to play an entire lengthy work soon gives way to appreciation for his insights and the beauties of the excerpts he's highlighting. Those insights include technical points like pedaling, rhythm, and touch. But more often he's teaching a work's expressive content. He'll relate a Beethoven Sonata to a love story or the way Chopin's Ballades reflect the Adam Mieckicwicz poems said to inspire them. There's Bach, Mozart, and Schumann here too. Cortot's main point, the lesson that pervades these discs, is one all aspiring artists need to absorb: "Technique can never really be separated from musical expression." This set is must for pianophiles, students, and admirers of one of the last century's greatest artists. --Dan Davis

Five Stars with a Caveat.......2006-12-02
This is a collection of musical fragments with spoken commentary. The pieces stop and start unexpectedly, and if you just want to sit down and enjoy some music, you'll find this set unnerving.
But what fragments! The format actually highlights how vividly Cortot could make a musical point: Some of these ideas leap off the CD, and will send you heading to the piano to figure out how he did what he did. For instance, his interpretation of Mozart's C-minor Fantasia, though stylistically anachronistic, makes almost all other performances of this piece seem emotionally stultified. This is the Mozart of "Don Giovanni" translated to the piano.
Most of the repertoire wasn't recorded elsewhere by Cortot -- an additional appeal for pianophiles.
A must for any music connoisseur.......2006-01-31
This is one of the great treasures of the piano discography. I was swept off my feet when I heard the Partita No.1, Cortot's only ever Bach recording -- he plays it with elegance, elan, and warmth that easily surpasses Glenn Gould's account of the same piece. Cortot gives tremendous insight into all the works, even going as far as comparing Mozart's Fantasia in C minor to the epic Don Juan. The session was taped at the Ecole Normale de Musique in 1954, and although some of the playing is extremely messy Cortot's distinctive sound and poetry still stands out. This set will be a pleasure to both the professional and student alike.

Cortot in what he does best.......2002-07-09
Cortot is one of the legendary pianists. This recording of the preludes and the ballades is better for him than the etudes. There are fewer technical demands and allow him to show of his poetic and interpretive gifts.
The engineers have done a credible job in making these recordings from the 1940s sound pretty good. I like the softer and less brilliant piano sound that was the norm back then. Today is just too bright and harsh for my tastes. But that is another story.
Email me if you want to talk about pianos.

Customer Reviews:
hmmmmm.......2005-11-28
I have not purchased the CD but listened to the one minute sample of the first etude opus ten. I am not a fanatic diehard stickler for technique but there were at least 30 or so mistakes/slips. This makes me reluctant to purchase the disc.
Be prepared for lesser quality recording.......2005-11-15
I purchased this CD set on the advice of other reviewers because I wanted a collection of Chopin works and it seemed that Cortot was one of the best pianists who performed Chopin's works.
I cannot write about his musicianship compared with other artists--please read the other reviews. But I will say that if you're planning to purchase this set, be prepared that the quality of the recording is really not that good. I did not heed the warnings of the other reviewers. It sounds like Cortot is performing in the middle of a waterfall.
Perhaps this recording will grow on me, but I'm going to look elsewhere for a set of Chopin works that I would listen to on a regular basis.
Thanks for reading.
You haven't really heard Chopin if you haven't heard Cortot!.......2005-09-21
Well, that may well be the case.
Cortot had won open admiration of Schiff, Cziffra, Michelangeli, Arrau, Solti... just to name a few. His pianism and his Chopin included is so incisive, with myriad of hues from coming from his subtle touch. And the poignancy is such that it is pure poetic ecstasy all through.
Talking about this album, despite the fact that Cortot had a long performing and recording career, the real obstacle is the archive sound. In this album we can have almost the best recording possible, with better transfer than most other trade names by far, be it Naxos or Aura, or whatever for the price of something like Naxos!
Note however that there is some grumble that EMI should instead chose his Preludes recorded in the 30s rather than those of the 40s, and EMI shouldn't have chosen his B Minor Sonata of recorded in the 50s when Cortot was declining... But in the latters we have better recordings and they are more bewitching even if slightless less staggering. Likewise, Barbirolli's accompaniment here may not be the most ideal, yet it is so fresh and so alive to say the least. On the whole, the recording and transfer is much better than what we have in Rachmaninov's box set by RCA.
Enormously enjoybale with so much to learn. And for those find the archive sound hard to bear with, do bear in mind that the pianist whom Schiff listen to most is Cortot, and before Cortot, it was Schnabel!
A must for both Chopin lovers and piano enthusiasts.......2004-10-17
This box set, something very difficult to find in the real world, is a must(!) for anyone interested, historically speaking, in how these works should sound along with their evolution from the early 1900's to the present. Why is Cortot qualified for this role? His teacher was Louis Dermier, one of Chopin's last pupils and supposed one of his favourites. This means Cortot is in fact the grandson of the Chopin technique, learning from one who was directly intructed how to play these works. Beyond that, he is one of the most remarkable pianists of his or any time, often criticized from an overextensive rubato, but this is the essence of Cortot. He may be the most informed pianist of all time, not only dissecting the notes on the page, but the mind of the composer and the life at the time that each composition was invented.
Any enthusiast of Chopin must listen to these recordings with an open mind. At first you will shun them, unaccustomed to the way the pieces differ from today, but soon they will grow on you and you hear each piece as if for the first time, and yo realize how far off our modern pianists are from the truth of the music. Most are more tachnically perfect than Cortot, he was often missing or hitting wrong notes, but the emotion behind those notes is what is the real importance of the music, something lost in todays pianists. Someone once said I would rather hear a good pianists wrong notes than a bad pianists right ones. And I cannot think of a more perfect personification of that comment than Cortot. In my mind he ranks as one of the top five pianists of the recording era, along with Hofmann, Richter, Horowitz, Gilels, and Moiseiwitsch. But honestly, I find more enjoyment listening to Cortot than any other single pianist on record, and this cortot box set covers almost three fourths of his Chopin output, so if you enjoy this find his Emi References of the Impromptus, the two great pianists disc are wonderful transfers, the chamber music trio with Thibaudet and Casals, and for the real enthusiast with money, the prades festival contains his last recording which a perfectly flawed rendition of the Third Cello Sonata by Beethoven and a version of Bei Mannern(different than the naxos.)
Must have!.......2003-07-24
This collection includes about 75% of Cortot's Chopin Recordings, which makes it the best value for anyone who doesn't already have these recordings. Several redundant recordings of works provide a glimpse into Cortot's mental makeup, and shows us just how much of his musical ideas change over time. Add to that the fact that most of the recordings are wonderful to listen to, and you have a must have recordings!

These recordings of the trio consisting of Alfred Cortot, Pablo Casals, and Jacques Thibaud, three of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, were made in 1926 and 1927. So the style of playing may seem dated to some, and others may have qualms about vintage sound. Fear not, though; the performances are full of insight and vitality, and Ward Marston's amazing transfers make them sound freshly scrubbed. The minimal surface noise shouldn't deter; it's the price for pristine highs such as those we hear in the natural sound of Thibaud's sweet, singing violin in the andante cantabile movement of the Haydn. The odd Beethoven work is masterly, too, with a gravely expressive introduction and a fun-filled set of variations made to order for the three virtuosos. The big work here is the Schubert Trio, in which this ensemble continues to amaze with their flawless phrasing and emotional commitment. Their phrasing of the Andante's gorgeous theme will melt your heart. These classic performances should be in every collection, and they're irresistible at Naxos's budget price. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Cortot, Thibaud and casals.......2003-10-02
The performances, needless to say, are simply unbeatable. The transfer, by Ward Marston, is very well done (although the Schubert sounds even fresher on the newly re-mastered "Great Recordings of the Century" version, which I have also reviewed). This release includes not only the Schubert, which is the greatest of all the Cortot, Thibaud and Casals recordings, but also the Haydn " Gypsy Rondo" trio and the Beethoven "Kakadu" Variations (recorded at the same sessions as the Schubert, but never released on 78s). At Naxos' bargain price, you should buy it. And the other releases in the series as well. Music making such as this is not heard today. It comes from a world which has gone - forever. Strongest recommendation.
One of the Richest Legacy Ever.......2003-04-22
Thibaud was amazingly colourful and this is evident from his trios here. Casals' tone here was even better than his Beethoven Sonatas. Those who grumble about "wrong notes" should take note how incisive and articulate Cortot could be. All of them are wonderful chamber musicians, plus greatest soloists. A perfect team which deserves much more attention than Heifetz/Feuermenn(Piatigorsky)/Rubinstein. The result, it's a full orchestra instead of a trio that we find from here: what else could we expect from this playing, or from such music?...
Yes, the recording is old but great music never grows outdated, the least of all thee playing of these soloists. They will remain a standard that will last for generations if not forever. Even the recording/transfer is well acceptable and the price is so nice. But as Cortot's fan, one might prefer their Schumann/ Mendelssohn of the same series from Naxos if we have to choose one.

Customer Reviews:
Paderewski's rendition of Hungarian Rhapsody's perfect.......2004-12-04
I've listened to Hungarian Rhapsody rendered by 3 different artists, and Paderewski's rendition's by far the best. In fact, his version compared to, say, Misha Dichter's in "The #1 Piano Album" is so much superior that I could not bear to listen to Misha's version. While Misha obviously paid plenty attention to technical details, Paderewski effortlessly captured the true beauty of the piece - and conveyed it with near perfection. If you love Liszt or Hungarian Rhapsody or Paderewski, buy this album. Or if you just love classical music at its best, get it too!
Treasure recordings on this CD unbelievable!.......2000-08-11
If you want to hear Josef Hoffman play buy this CD. If you want to hear Arthur Rubinstein play buy this CD. All of the Great Pianists of the Century. A joy to listen to!

Customer Reviews:
Pau Casals, the great maestro!!!.......2001-09-06
This is one of the best things I have ever heard in my whole life! The great Casals performing Brahm's concerti. Maestro Pau Casals ( 1876-1973 ) was, certainly, the best musician in the twentieth century. He was, also, an incredible conductor, and a composer, too ( for example " El Pessebre").
However, in this cd, we are able to hear Mtro. Casals playing his violoncello sharing the orchestra with some of the best musicians, the french pianist and conductor: Alfred Cortot and the pianist Mieczislaw Horszovsky. This is a very interesting jewl because Cortot is conducting which is not common in the recordings. This Brahm's performance is beyond our undertsanding inasmuch as the musicians are the best ones in the history. When you hear this record, you will agree. I do not write down a lot because I think the names in this cd are more than sufficient.
