Neeme Järvi's complete recording is marked by a good feel for pacing and color and excellent contributions from its soloists--including, in Knut Buen, a real Hardanger fiddler for the right folkloric touch. This account is melodramatic in the good sense, particularly in the confrontation with the Boyg. The sound is excellent; the only drawback is that the recording takes up two discs. --Ted Libbey

Wonderful!!!.......2007-05-14

I bought this for my husband but fell in love with it myself. I had never heard of it but now consider Edvard Grieg my favorite composer. It is magnificent.

Relaxes your mind........2005-12-30

The peer gynt suite is very delicate and it relaxes me. Whenever I hear the first movement of Peer Gynt, I feel as if I am walking along the forest at dawn with sunshine passing through the tall trees. It calms me and I usually close my eyes to imagine Grieg's creative masterpiece. What also interests me the fourth movement. It starts with slow and quiet and then slowly the music accelerates with power. Like the title, "Mountain King," says itself, you can feel the grandness of the music toward the end.

The piano concerto in a minor is my favorite. This music seem to convey the full spectrum from quiet and delicate or gracious feel of music to more powerful and magnificent all proportionally adequately. It is very enjoyable. Whenever I listen to this music, I feel as if I am resting in the high mountainn looking at the full panorama. Anyway, that's just my imagination I feel from his music and of course, yours can be very different from mine.

As for the CD quality, I hear no distraction sound and it is recorded well, I think. The little cover booklet can be informative about Grieg. Also nice price from Amazon.

Relaxing music from a great composer.......2005-08-02

I absolutely loved the string music on Track 3. I remembered it from an old PC RPG called Quest for Glory IV. I was disappointed to find out that Track 4 was only a minute and a half long, because I grew up loving that song from the various places I heard it (Fantasia and a kid Detective PC game from the late 80's).
Overall, though, Grieg's greatest hits is a must-have for collectors of classical music. Grieg is revered as Norway's greatest composer of all time and he certainly has a knack for creating imagery of bustling fjords and majestic mountainsides with interlaced river ravines.

Better than just an introduction.......2004-04-28

This CD goes beyond just introducing Grieg. It is a truly beautiful and for me, invaluable collection of this excellent composer. Grieg had an inimitable gift for exploring emotion, often sadness and nostalgia. However, he also had a large touch of the virtuoso, as demonstrated by the famous Piano Concerto. True, the last 2 movements are not included here; however, the first is still stunning. The Peer Gynt Suites are wonderfully played, and Ase's Death and Heartwounds are especially noteworthy - the lush orchestral sounds of these gorgeous pieces unfold exquisitely. Homage March is a nice change of pace, upbeat and with a memorable theme, and Leonard Bernstein moves at a devilish pace in March of the Trolls. This CD will not disappoint you - buy it today!

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

When i first picked up this cd, i must say that i was somewhat dubious in doing so. 'It's just another Grieg collection', i was thinking to myself. However, this collection is more than this. It offers an excellent insight to Norway's greatest composer. Fine for anyone who wishes to find out more about this great composer.

Favored Recording of Grieg.......2002-03-18

I am most fond of much of Grieg's works, especially Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar.

This is the consummate recording for me. His rendering of the Peer Gynt Suite is outstanding. In addition to the choral contributions which other recordings omit (this adds much to "The Hall of the Mountain King) Jarvi's pace on Morning Mood and The Hall of the Mountain King is simply the best. Morning Mood on other recordings is played too fast, which at the end looses the awesomeness of morning sunrise to this reviewer.

The Gothenburg Symphony performs magnificently, with due accolades given to the woodwinds and horns for their subtle, exquisite performance.

I would consider this or an equivalent on Grieg to be a needed part of one's classical collection. It is one of my favorites.

For those already familiar with the performances contained in this DG "2-fer", you're either a Karajan fan or you're not. The magic and sweep of the Berlin Philharmonic's strings under Karajan's baton were its signature. Not the best tool for edgy and angular 20th century repetoire, but for Karajan's core recordings of Early-, Mid-, and Late-Romantic scores--plus a key group of 20th century specialties--the BPO was practically unmatched in their suavity, virtuosity, sheen and beauty. Such was the case with his readings of Sibelius and Grieg anthologized here, with recordings ranging from mid-60s analogue sources to his digital era of the 1980s.

The 96/24 digital remastering has been largely successful in softening the glare and hardness of the 80s digital efforts while preserving their tremendous impact and presence...witness the noticeable improvement in the Grieg "Holberg Suite" and the Sibelius "Pelleas." In both cases, there's more "air" around the orchestra as recorded in the notoriously difficult acoustic of the Philharmonie. Likewise, the earlier analogue sources gain in a sharpening of focus and punch, while retaining the attractive ambience of the Jesus-Christus Kirche recording venue used by the BPO througout the 60s and early 70s. Tape hiss is well-managed and unobtrusive, while still permitting the percussion to sparkle and string harmonics to shimmer, as in the Grieg "Peer Gynt" selections and "Sigurd Jorsalfar" suite, plus a rightly acclaimed reading of Sibelius' chilling "Tapiola."

Norwegian-born Edvard Grieg has created many works for the orchestra, and this 6-CD box set contains almost all of them. Neeme Jarvi handles the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the choirs very well. The sound is crystal clear and has the perfect digital sound for every CD player/stereo.

For the long works, the Piano Concerto is attention-grabbing and beautiful. The Symphonic Dances and the Norwegian Dances are lively and tremendously extraordinary. The lesser-known Symphony in C Minor should be more recognized, as it is as powerful as other symphonies, like Mahler's first and Beethoven's sixth. For the short works, In Autumn and Landkjenning can be best described as sheer masterpieces.

For Peer Gynt, it is good to hear the first digitally-recorded authentic version. The suite version is just not enough for that full listening experience. NOTE: if you want to buy a Peer Gynt that includes the complete dialogue, I would recommend conductor Ole Kristian Ruud's version with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; the dialogue lengthens the 90-minute work by two hours.

To know the rest is to listen to them straight through. All the works in this box set (especially the Piano Concerto) should be a possession for all Grieg-lovers.

This box-set a must have for any Grieg lovers.
Neeme Jarvi is very good.

In first CD, there is a powerful performance of Piano Concerto by Zilberstein.She is also great in F.Liszt recordings (at DG Classics). In second CD, works for string orchestra (including, famous Holberg Suite) to be found. And in 3rd and 4th CDs, marvellous recordins of Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd, the Crusader)to be found.This works are the first recordings of complete score. Still, speakers to be present at Peer Gynt.And Funeral March for R. Nordraak is very influence in 4th CD.The wind ensemble of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is very good...

In 5th CD, there is an unknown work by Grieg: Symphony in C-minor. This work written in early period, but didn't perfomed often. Still, this work's name is "Forbidden Symphony"...And then, a majestic work "Land-Sighting" to be found. This is very successful choral work of composer and he written in a heavenly tone:E Major...And then, there is an unknown work again, an incomplete opera: "Olav Trygvason"... Grieg written this work on a libretto by his friend, Bjornson (a famous poet of Norway), but he could finish first act...

And in last CD, there are other vocal works, and his beatiful work: "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations". And then, 5 Songs to be found. This songs originally written for voice and piano (like other many songs) but he later orchestrated these works.And the first song "The First Meeting" was discovered in 80's and still, they used a new edition, published from new founded manuscript, so this is the first recording of Grieg's beatiful song.

In other words: this box-set is excellent and Highly recommended.

Wonderful recordings, slightly marred by lack of texts.......2003-04-09

Jarvi has been a fine advocate of Scandinavian music over the last 30 years. Even of those such as Grieg and Sibelius who you would think no longer needed advocacy. Most of these recordings were warmly welcomed on their releases and several won awards. And it's nothing but a pleasure to see them reappear again. The orchestral playing is sumptuous, but the real stand out is the singing of Barbara Bonney on several CDs.

This is now the fourth or fifth release for some of these CDs, first came the individual volumes, then the full price box, then releases on budget DG Classikon, and now a Collector's Edition box at half the price, but sadly minus the texts to CDs 2,3 and 6. This won't matter so much in the orchestral songs, CD6, where the texts to Bergtekne, Bergliot etc. are available in other releases or on the Lieder web page, but CDs 2 and 3 are currently the only complete recording of Peer Gynt and the sung or spoken texts are not available outside sheet music collections. Personally (as someone more interested in the vocal music than the orchestral) I would try and locate the original volumes, but at least DG has given those who don't feel the extra expense is justified a cheaper option.

Neeme Järvi's complete recording is marked by a good feel for pacing and color and excellent contributions from its soloists--including, in Knut Buen, a real Hardanger fiddler for the right folkloric touch. This account is melodramatic in the good sense, particularly in the confrontation with the Boyg. The sound is excellent; the only drawback is that the recording takes up two discs. --Ted Libbey

Awesome in the best sense of the word.......2006-05-01

Everyone enjoys the suites but hearing the complete music in proper sequence is a powerful experience. The music and the story the play tells compliment each other to a degree the suites only hint at. If anyone believes Grieg was only comfortable writing miniatures (after the piano concerto) give this a hearing. One good example is a truly scary Hall of the Mountain King.

If you thought the familiar Suite version was awesome..........2006-01-10

... think again! You're missing more than half of what Mr. Grieg has to offer of the story of the Norwegian Faust, Peer Gynt. Much of the music in this complete version is not to be ignored. Seriously folks, some of the musical scenes not present in the Suite version will knock your socks off!

Here are some stuff you're missing:

1) The official music that introduces us to the play, known as the overture. It is a lively opener, carefree as the young Peer Gynt, but also has a somber Solveig theme in the middle section, fortelling his ultimate fate. Peer's leitmotif in the beginning will be used again later on, but this time in a minor key, in the Abduction scene (which would become the first movement in the second suite).

2) Two brief pieces written for the Hardanger fiddle to give you a taste of Norway.

3) Singing is involved in some of the familiar movements you hear in the Suite version; Solveig's song, Arabian Dance, and most strikingly, the infamous Hall of the Mountain King, which the trolls violently chant "Kill Him! Kill Him!"

4) The curious Dance of the Mountain King's Daughter. The melody is in a major key, but the sharp fourth (think the intro for "Maria", and "The Simpsons" Theme) discomforts the listeners (in Modal terms, it sounds like Lydian). This sharp fourth and a tonic played together would produce a tritone (or also known as the Devil's interval, and Grieg must have purposely done that to represent the trolls' evil nature).

5) The scene following the troll's capture of Peer Gynt. Musically, it is a more skippy version of the Mountain King theme, in 6/8, reminiscent of Berlioz's "Sabbath Night" from Symphonie Fantastique. There is a whole barrage of brass and percussion in the crumbling scene, when the trolls retreat after hearing church bells from the distance.

6) The turning point of the play - the aging Peer Gynt's entry to a devastated forest. There he witnesses voices (sung in unison) coming from different inanimate objects such as leaves, dews, and winds, telling all his wrongdoings. As each object scorns him, the music becomes higher and more menacing. Later, you hear the voice of Peer Gynt's mother, along with the reprise of her theme.

6) How the play began with D major, it ends with the same key, this time touching, as the old Solveig, Peer Gynt's destined love and symbol of ultimate redemption, sings him a lulluby. The man's mortal, and moral, journey is finally over...

These are the best recordings of both theater works.
And these are the first complete and authentic recordings of both works.

Still, Neeme Jarvi is a champion on interpretation of Grieg' s works and he has recorded complete works with orchestra of composer. (Actually, this 6-CD set is available and price of this set is very good, unbeatable: about 47$, and Peer Gynt and Sigurd have recorded in this set.)

Other performers are excellent (ex. Speakers). Gothenborg Symphony is the best orchestra (with Stockholm Philharmonic) in Sweden.

I like especially, in Peer Gynt: solos of Norwegian Fiddle, In the Hall of Mountain King, The Hunt of Trolls, Song of Solveig.

And, Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd the Crusader), like Peer Gynt, was based from Henrik Ibsen's play and this work is shorter than Peer Gynt (35 minutes, but duration of Peer Gynt is 85 minutes)... I think, the best movement of this work is, Homage March. This march tells about Coronation of Sigurd. And Fanfares of 5 horns (in beggining of work), is impressive and portrays there is a majestic Middle Age landscape with castles, woodlands...

In other words, this is a must have for any Grieg admirers.

Excellent Music.......2000-09-01

If you are only familiar with selecions of Greig's most famous compositions from Peer Gynt, then listening to this CD should be as great a pleasure to you as it has been to me. Grieg's art goes beyond those wonderful melodies to the complex beauty of the Holberg Suites, which were written in partial imitation of 18th century music to honor a philosopher of the Englightenment, but also incorporate a late 19th century style, and the juxtaposition is fascinating to hear. Very nice performances and a good deal, too.

The Art of Grieg.......2000-08-12

Edvard Grieg is a masterful composer. He is rich with lyric tapestry of music and remains faithful to his Norwegian homeland. In fact, upon hearing such suites as Peer Gynt, we can travel with the music as it takes us to snowy mountain summits and cool dark moonlit evenings. Peer Gynt is marvelous. Morning Song is known and loved all over, it can really perk you up in the morning. You can find it in any Morning Music cd. Aase's Death is tragic and melancholy with its use of strings. The Holberg Suite, meant to portray romantic scenes of Holberg, Norway is a delightful set of "serenade music." The prelude allegro vivace has an opening of strings evoking a dark and typically Romantic style. The Gavotte is very entertaining. If you love the music of Grieg, I would purchase this cd. It's one of his more well known works, along with the Piano Concerto No. 2. Grieg is Great. There is no better, yet simple way to put it into words.

This is a very convenient and reasonably priced collection of Grieg's best-known orchestral music. Well-recorded, it's played by one of the world's great orchestras under the direction of one of the world's best-known conductors. If that's all you need to know, and especially if you are planning to use this disc for background music, you can buy it with confidence. If you want incisive characterization of the music, though, you should probably look elsewhere. Karajan applies a uniformly lush sound to the music, smoothing off the rough edges and making everything sound nice. It's not all supposed to sound nice. In a more extensive selection of "Peer Gynt" music, Sir Thomas Beecham brings out more character in the music, as does Leonard Bernstein in the standard suites. "From Holberg's Time" has a deliberately antique, courtly element that vanishes under the Berlin's wall of sound. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra brings out this character more effectively. And if you want an even more extensive and reasonably priced Grieg orchestral collection, with a less fine orchestra but more character, try Abravanel/Utah on Vox. --Leslie Gerber

Excellent recording!.......2004-12-04

I saw the ballet of Peer Gynt earlier this year and afterwards fled to the nearest music store for a recording of the music. I picked up this copy because it was reasonably priced, and Deutsche Grammophon has a reputation for putting out quality CDs. I was not disappointed! Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic do a beautiful job of interpreting the two Peer Gynt Suites and the Holberg Suite as well.

Good Value for Grieg Selections.......2002-02-19

This is an admirable recording of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 and No. 2, as well as "From Holberg's Time."

I would concur that at times this is too well polished, but for the value, this is a good work. I find the exceptional treatment of Grieg's Suite No. 1 to be by Neeme Jarvi conducting the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The transition work of one of my favorite pieces, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" is very noticeably different interpretation than Karajan's.

More admirably is Karajan's leading the Berline Philharmoniker on the Holberg Suite. As well, outstanding playing of Grieg's "Three Pieces for Orchestra." Expecially fond of their rendition of Borghild's Dream.

Poor dynamics.......2001-09-15

I am a great fan of Edvard Grieg. I've even been to his birth place, Bergen, Norway. I was quite dissapointed with this cd. The musicians are very talented but the recording is not the best. The recording is clear but the dynamics are other than they should be. You will find the tension fails to correctly build. The pianisimo sections of the music are so soft that you either can't hear them or if you can, the following section will cause hearing loss.

I could not credit this cd with 5 stars due to the immature sound of the orchestra during "In the Hall of the Mountain King". It sounded like Karajan let the strings go too wildly. It did not sound together just rushed. And it was all kind of smeared together into one big sound. If it was not for this song this cd would have definately got five stars. The rest of the cd is performed remarkably well. I'm just glad karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic did't revisit that bad habit on the specific song I referred to.
